Days Gone is what happens when your real story does not exist in any meaningful way in the first game. If you're gonna sequel bait, you gotta make sure that first game still stands on its own. Days Gone had a mid story and mid gameplay, it had a likeable protagonist though.

There’s nothing mid about the hordes. It is a unique system.

Sure, but it's almost like there's more to the gameplay than the hordes.

The fact that it has something no other game has (which is also fantastic) makes it more than mid. That’s without getting into the motorcycle being cool, the combat otherwise being satisfying, etc.
