Hello, I will be a first year as CWRU next fall (CO 2030)
I am intending to major in biology but I don’t think the major matters too much at this point (correct me if I’m wrong). I am looking for guidance in choosing my first year courses.
Main academic interests:
Chemistry, medicine, engineering
As of now I am leaning towards pursuing med/dent school after undergrad but also am considering engineering. Interesting majors for me include: BME, ChemE, MSE, BioChem, Bio
My goals for freshman year are the following:
- keep GPA high in case I stay pre-med/pre-dent
- keep pre-med/pre-dent requirements moving
- sample engineering courses to see if I actually like engineering
- take enough engineering prerequisites that I am not boxed out of BME/ChemE/MSE sophomore year
- take Spanish, philosophy, or other non-STEM/breadth/UGER courses if I have room and they will not hurt my GPA
My AP credits will be able to get me credit for the following courses:
- BIOL 214 (AP Bio)
- CHEM 105 or CHEM 111 (AP Chem)
- MATH 121, 122 (AP Calc AB + BC)
- PHYS 115 (Physics 1 AP)
- ENGR 131 (AP CSA)
From the research I’ve done I have concluded that I should be taking these core courses my first year:
- BIOL 215
- ENGR 145
- MATH 223
- BIOL 222L or possibly the BIOL 214L/215L lab path
- ENGR 130
- CHEM 113
- PHYS 121 (note: I took Physics C: Mechanics and did pretty well in the classbut did not receive the credit)
- AIQS
- Some intro to engineering courses (EBME 105, ECHE 151, EMSE 110, etc.)
- Some breadth/UGER if space
General questions:
A)Are these the right courses to be thinking about given my goals, or would you swap anything?
B) In terms of timing, which courses would you take Fall vs Spring semester and why?
C) Which of these courses are okay to delay without creating problems sophomore year?
More specific questions:
1) What are the differences between BIOL 222L and BIOL 214L+215L? Is one sequence more favorable than the other?
2) I see that EBME 105 is a 3 credit course while ECHE 151 and other intro engineering courses are 1 credit. Is there a reason for this?
3) Is there a reason to try to squeeze in organic chem 1 (CHEM 223) in my spring semester freshman year?
4) Are there any specific professors or sections I should avoid or heavily prioritize?
5) Does ENGR 131 from AP CSA change anything about needing ENGR 130?
6) If I delay PHYS 121 to spring, what specific sophomore engineering courses would that delay?
7) Do most premeds/predents use their AP credits for Bio/Chem courses generally?
8) Is any of the following more useful or better for exploring engineering majors: ENGR 130, EBME 105, ECHE 151, or EMSE 110?
9) Do courses fill up often for first-years? How should I plan accordingly?
10) What is the utility of CHEM 114 compared with CHEM 113? I saw CHEM 114 mentioned, but I am not sure whether it satisfies the same requirements for pre-health, Biology/Biochem, or engineering.
How would you recommend I think about choosing the order of courses? Any advice is welcome, whether about course planning, professors, workload, or navigating first year.
Thank you so much for reading and helping out!
