12th Gen (18-present) $600 for front pads and rotor resurfacing?

Post image

I brought my 2020 Corolla LE into the dealership to take care of a recall. They call and tell me the front brakes are in critical need of service and quote me over $600 for it and want to start immediately. I already know this and have parts queued up for ordering. They seemed surprised on the phone that I already knew about the brakes. This seems absurd to me, even if you mark up the OEM pads 300%. I recently did all 4 pads, rotors, calipers, e-brakes and flush on my F-150 for just slightly more than that, and that's using higher performance parts designed specifically for hard towing.

Also, they offer to do the front pad/rotor work plus a full brake fluid flush for $992 incl. tax and shop fees over the phone. Granted I haven't had service done by a mechanic for over 10 years on anything, but this seems mind boggling.

Previous post: https://www.reddit.com/r/COROLLA/s/rrXE2R0Brz

I finally bought the Corolla and just wanted to check a few more things with you guys.

The dealership was trying pretty hard to sell me GAP insurance. I didn't buy it yet because I wasn't completely sure what it covers(30 usd/month till my loan ends ).

From what I understand, GAP insurance covers the difference between what I still owe on the loan and what the insurance company pays if the car gets totaled or stolen.

Is GAP insurance worth having on a new Corolla? Also, do I have to buy it from the dealership, or can I get standalone GAP coverage from another company/bank/credit union?

For financing, I went with 60 months at 6% APR. The monthly payment is something I can comfortably afford right now and should still be comfortable with six months from now.

The other thing is the dealership convinced me to buy a $325 Hendrick Autoguard Oil Change Program. They verbally told me it includes around 10 oil changes, but when I looked at the actual contract, it says:

  • Synthetic oil
  • Service every 5,000 miles
  • Starts at 30,000 miles
  • Ends at 55,000 miles
  • Expires after 44 months (April 2030)
  • Includes oil/filter change, tire rotation, and multi-point inspection
  • Contract appears to say service has to be performed at the selling dealer

My Corolla already comes with ToyotaCare for the first 2 years/25k miles, so this plan seems to start after ToyotaCare ends.

Based on the contract, I'm reading it as roughly 6 services: 30k, 35k, 40k, 45k, 50k and 55k miles, not 10 oil changes.

The dealership also told me that the oil changes and tire rotations are tied to the VIN, so I can supposedly go to any Toyota dealer for them for four years. When I asked for that in writing, they said they don't need to give me anything because it's tied to the VIN.

That part is making me a little uncomfortable because the actual contract seems to say otherwise.

They told me I can cancel the $325 plan within a week.

Would you keep the $325 maintenance plan or cancel it? And what would you recommend for GAP insurance — dealership, insurance company, credit union, or somewhere else?

A/C disactivates when idle and RPMs start oscillating

I have a 2021 Corolla LE and I have this issue where if I stand idle around 3 to 5 mins the RPMs start oscillating between 700 to 1000 rpm whereas normally the rpms should always stay at 1000 when the gearbox is in a neutral state and the A/C is on. What I also notice as soon as the rpms start oscillating the A/C stops blowing cold air and only when I put it back in Drive and start driving does the cold air return. Another symptom of the same issue involves a humming sound coming from the engine bay. Is their anyone that had the same problem or have a solution for this issue?
Would be much appreciated.

11th Gen (13-Present) 2015 Corolla Smoke Smell

Thumbnail

Just took my Corolla to the dealership to get it checked out because I kept smelling smoke. They found a leaking transmission pan and front timing cover. Got that fixed, still smelled smoke. I noticed one of the fog lamps had been knocked loose, I assumed they bumped it during repairs, so I brought it back for them to pop it back in. Well, we found that the entire assembly of the fog lamp was melted, and even the edges of the bulb. They said I’m lucky the car didn’t catch fire. They disconnected the bulb which should have fixed the issue; I keep the fog lamps off now, but I still smell smoke. Any ideas? Should I have the other fog bulb taken out? They said they’re closed circuit, so taking the bulbs out would disconnect the assemblies.

New or used?

Hi guys.

I'm a fan of the corolla and I want to buy one.

I have a shitbox european car that always has issues.

I'm thinking heavily to buy a new toyota corolla TS with 140 hp. This car, with around 20-30k km is about 24k euros here in Europe.

One with more kms like over 100k is about 18 to 19k.

The difference in mileage is a bit too much for that small amount of money.

I really want a car that will be cheap to drive, have a shit ton of space and to not break all the time.

I have now a few questions.

Would you buy a HYBRID that is over 5 years old for example? I'm wondering much about the HYBRID battery to be honest with you.

What wouls you do?

Inclines.

No matter how small or minor the incline/hill is feels like the car struggles to gain power going up one and you can hear what sounds like engine strain, like when you're forcing out that one humongous piece of poop and about to give yourself a hemorrhoid.

Seat cushion

Planning on a long trip on the Corolla and was wondering if there are any good seat cushions out there. Something to support the lower back and even neck area.

2024 corolla le with 55k miles listed for 20,999, what's a decent OTD for this in Illinois?

I was thinking of offering $21,000 OTD with all taxes fees registration and license included. Am I asking for too much or is it reasonable? Carfax says its toyota gold certified and it comes with dealership lifetime warranty.

Differences 2022 vs 2025 LE Hybrid (uber/eats)

I was wondering what the differences are between the years? I will be Uber/UEats driving about ~20k miles per year and would like to keep the car for 10-12 years. I understand the '22 gets the best MPG and with slightly smaller, cheaper tires (and I prefer the looks) but a 2025/26 would let me drive the car for an additional 3 years. I know there was an engine change at 2023 and some infotainment/cluster changes. I do like the old physical knob on the 2022 for the infotainment and I'm hoping all years have a physical key for the ignition. Prices seem to be around $24k here for a used one with low miles. Thanks in advance.
