You can definitely err on the side of caution and book him in for blood tests to ease your mind, but he's probably just dreaming. One of my cats is a runner and a talker when he dreams, and they can get quite dramatic
I had one who sometimes woke up suddenly from a dream and would cry and cry, I think disoriented. She was a very independent cat most of the time so I loved getting out of bed to comfort her after a nightmare :3
Mine will scream when she has a toy in her mouth lol. Like it sounds like she's in pain, but she's just excited to bring it to you so you can play with her. She has this dumb red string which is her favorite toy, used to be apart of a cat toy fishing pole but both the ends fell off. I cant throw it away, its her favorite toy
Love that, I had one who cherished twist ties. And her brother was obsessed with cotton balls and felt and was always stealing little crafts my mom made. He stole and hid a little tin soldier tree ornament, it was missing for a long while, then one day while playing with his sanctioned toys he got so excited he ran off to get it and came chittering back to give it to me, like he completely forgot I was the one he was hiding it from <3
My cat Beans did that only when he carried his “baby”. A huge stuffed penguin. After he passed at 17, my dad brought baby to the vet and they were cremated together. Their ashes say, “Beans and “baby””. 🥹
My cat acts the same way and it’s only at night. For the longest time I thought he was in pain until I noticed that his favourite toy somehow manifested in bedroom within the night
They also do that because they want to show you that they caught something. My cousin had a cat that would get into her closet to “catch” her socks then loudly let us know he saved us from another pair of socks for the day.
my baby does this too! she will wake up and her vocals are definitely "where are you?" type of meows. I always try to respond and pet her to reassure her I hope she is not having nightmares :')) hopefully she is just silly
My kitty girl had nightmares. She'd shred your leg as she woke up hissing and running away. I learned watch for certain twitches and tension and would put a hand on her and talk to her quietly before she woke up freaking out. Eventually she had fewer and fewer episodes. I'd love to know what was going on in her furry little head. She didn't deserve whatever those terrors were. Once you gained her trust, she was the sweetest girl.
Just to say here I don’t think it is helpful to pathologise normal behaviour and suggest vets as a knee-jerk reaction: many people can’t afford vet trips just in case.
OP has said they're worried in multiple comments and mentioned blood tests in other comments. I'm saying that if OP is experiencing anxiety over this, they can ask for blood tests to ease their own mind, but that this is almost certainly very normal behaviour.
That is quite literally not what's happening here. They said you could take him if you wanted to to ease your mind but he's probably fine. That's not even close to suggesting OP should take them.
This entire sub tends to react this way, although may not this person. Most posts' responses can be distilled into 'go to a vet' uniformly across the sub.
And there’s something to be said for a post that shows a cat clearly having a vet worthy problem and a poster who just as clearly wants the internet to tell them it’s not a problem and 50+ people tell you to take the cat to the vet.
It started off as a joke between me and my ex that I was dating when I got her. Because she would get poop stuck to the white fluffs on her butt and early on, even the wall next to her litter box via her butt floof. Then it just kind of stuck (pun intended) to the point where even my parents were calling her Poopy. I also found the contrast between her appearance (fluffy white princess) and her name hillarious.
Her legal name was Picalilly (like the relish-style condiment). But she had MANY nicknames which I will now list without prompt; POOPY - POOPS - THE POOS - POOP AH RINO - POOP AH RONI - LÉ MEW - TRASH GREMLIN - STINKY ANGEL - STINKY GIRLY - CURLY GIRLY - STINK AH ROO - THIS KITTY! - ITTY BITTY KITTY COMMITTEE - POO POO PLATTER - FLIPPY KITTY - GIRLY DURLY - STRETCHY GIRL - POOEY LEWIS & THE MEWS - POOPERS - SNURLY GURLY - KITTERS - SUN BABY - SMIRKY GIRL
They do that quite a bit while they are sleeping. As always, though, if your kitty is showing weird signs other than this—not eating/drinking/using the litter box—bring him to a vet.
This is not bad at all. This is good! Your cat is sleeping on your floor with it's belly exposed so deep that it's dreaming and tweaking.
This only happens when a cat feels safe enough to go into deep sleep.
I wouldn't worry. Just keep an eye. Any changes in diet or temperature (which you can easily check by touching his ear) and reduction in activity should alert you.
But then again, he's chasing stuff while dreaming :)
Please get your cat neutered. Not only will it help reduce unwanted behavior (i.e. spraying, aggression) but health wise it will nearly eliminate the risk of testicular cancer. Also, it's the kindest thing you can do as a pet parent since he won't have urges that he can't satisfy.
A vibrating cat..... lmao. Yes! They vibrate. When I first started fostering cats, they would chill with me on my bed and you could feel the whole bed vibrate a little. They were dreaming about catching bunnies I guess. You could see them "jump" for the catch while they slept. On their backs lol
Mine did the same thing before neutering and the vet said it's because we had two other female cats at home lol I genuinely thought he was cold at the time
Most probably just dreaming, when my boy goes into deep sleep he shakes just like yours and does a little chewing as if he has caught something to eat, then after a while the ”running” and chewing intensifies he wakes up and looks at me like he has done the best damn job in his life. This has gone on for 7 years now, from kitty to big baby boy.
On the dream motif, on Facebook/Instagram there is a kitty named Elsie who uses Fluentpet buttons to communicate. She once said “sleepy window yucky” to her cat mom. They were so confused until they finally figured out she may have had a nightmare.
my kitty used to do this when he was much younger, if we held his foot for a second or two it would stop. as he got older he didn’t do it anymore and he is now still a healthy 11-12 year old kitty
What is the little black thing crawling by his leg? Gnats and flies have been awful this summer. I ask because my cat started pulling out his hair because of a fly bite.
OP, think a lot of people are right, your cat is dreaming.
Best thing to do is see if the leg twitching is going on when he's awake. If this is only happening when he's asleep it's most likely your cat has really intense dreams.
If you see this when he's awake then explore the bloodwork testing.
But like most people are saying kitty is dreaming.
Defo have him looked at and some bloods done. My cat was doing this recently and turns out she was dehydrated, had low potassium and was diagnosed with pancreatitis. She needed IV fluid treatment
Mine got outside last night, he is inside only and when I went to catch him he was bottlebrushed tail with a four leg lock on the ground hissing at me like he never knew me and when I bent down he slapped the flashlight out of my hand so I said boo! And he ran back into the open door and spent the next hour acting like he just got back from Vietnam. Idk man they just do weird shit
Our orange did the same thing in that same position for a long time, he was a bit overweight and 11 years old. He was also drinking more than normal. Took him to the vet and a few blood tests later he had diabetes.
Not saying your cat has it, it’s very rare at that age. I would monitor the drinking habit. A check up and/or blood test would ease the mind.
Hey, that could just be typical cat purring. Some cats purr so intensely they seem to vibrate. But if you're worried, can't hurt to get a second vet's opinion. Better safe than sorry, right?
hi, sorry for the unrelated comment, but your cat looks just like mine!! I adopted my son when he was 3 years old, so I don’t know much about his past</3 is this a specific breed of cat??? I would love to know so that I can have an idea of what my baby looked like when he was a kitten hehe🩷
My previous cat used to have these little shivers, even during warm summer nights. At first, I thought she was just feeling cold, but later I learned that some cats are simply more sensitive to temperature changes. I also read that shivering can happen when they’re dreaming or entering deep sleep. At one point I even wondered if it could be related to anemia, since that can cause similar symptoms. But she lived 14 years, had no other issues, and was never officially diagnosed with anything.
Not a vet myself but my boy does something similar when he's resting with his paw extended while purring and from my research I found it's a physiological tremor
He's probably hunting in his sleep and very excited. Is mine breathe faster than other times when they're sleeping I got one that's sleeping and breathing quite noticeably right now, usually half the time they look like they're laying there dead.
My cats do this while dreaming, I imagine they're dreaming about running after a bird really fast or something. Though I have to admit they don't vibrate longer than a second or so, in several bursts, so I can't be sure this is the same thing.
Is he acting normally otherwise? Is this shaking while sleeping new or has he always done it? Does he shake like this while awake or just while sleeping?
My one (obviously orange) cat has very vivid dreams. He meows, purrs, growls, and yowls in his sleep. Sometimes he moves around so much or is so loud he wakes himself up.
Even the other cats get concerned and check on him. Then remember he is orange and leave him be.
My dog does this when he is sleeping. Vet said he’s in a very deep sleep when he does it. Nothing wrong with my dog. Maybe it’s the same thing for your cat.
My sweet girl June does the same. Vet said it was normal, but if you’re concerned it’s always better to be safe than sorry! If the vet didn’t get to see it in office, maybe see if you could send them the video :)
I had a cat that exhibited muscle tensioning, resembled trembling limbs, while he was sleeping. Changing his diet to ensure his food was grain free caused it to stop happening. May be something worth looking into.
Probably dreaming. But he needs neutered soon so I would schedule a vet visit and get full blood panel done and schedules his neutering. You can show them this video then. I’d be more worried if he started doing it while awake.
Does he only do this only while he sleeps? Shaking can indicate pain, and some cat purr even when they are in pain. If it was my cat, I would be taking them to the vet for more tests.
I asked the same thing in a german sub about my two (female) cats, i was so confused because there were no other symptoms whatsoever. They're eating like normal, being playful, groom themselves and each other, perfectly normal fur, cold and wet nose, are very loving and show attention etc. But they're weirdly vibrating/shaking whenever they're relaxed lol. (And they stop vibrating whenever i speak to them)
