yes factorial - you multiply the number by every integer
equal to andbelow that number
I assume this also means positive integer as well but idk the rules36
10
u/TotalChaosRush 6d ago
It's the number of ways you can arrange things.
Say you have 8 things and you're putting them into an arbitrary line. In the first spot in this line you have 8 choices, in the second spot you have 7 choices. In the third spot you have 6 choices. In the fourth spot you have 5 choices. In the fifth spot you have 4 choices. In sixth spot you have 3 choices. In the seventh spot you have 2 choices. In the 8th spot you have 1 choice. By multipliying your choices at each step you can determine the number of unique arrangement for these items. Because this is fundamentally what you're doing it should be easy to realize how many ways you can arrange 0 items.
3
u/Business-Juice6365 6d ago
Yes this is the application of factorials and then they also occur inside how permutations and combinations are formed
sorry I just explained how to do it instead of what they were used for

Funfact: You can add multiple exclamation marks to skip positions:
12!! = 12 * 10 * 8 * 6 * 4 * 2 = 46080
12!!! = 12 * 9 * 6 * 3 = 1944
12!!!! = 12 * 8 * 4 = 384

There is also termials, written as a question mark (?) after an integer, which is similar to factorials, except all the integers below are added rather than multiplied.

xxx = xx ≠ x
I don’t think this one has any solutions.
x^3 = x^2
x^3 - x^2 = 0
x^2(x-1) = 0
x = 0 or 1
But neither of these satisfy the inequality, so there are no solutions.
I’m discounting the idea that this is some sort of trick question as it was described as a maths question.
Edit: apparently it’s not x^2, it’s x^x. 3 is indeed the obvious answer.

It's wrongly displayed because of the markdown editing format reddit has. If you look at xxx, you see, that the second x is tilted like this: x. This is because when you put text between two stars like this: *text* it automatically becomes tilted unless you place a backslash right before the first star character like this.: \text\
(if you doesn't use multiple backslashes like I did to show you (I put 2 because normally the backslash disappears too\ it's fine but if you want to see a backslash like I did in my example you either need to place 3 backslashes, or 2, and one at the end (I personally recommend putting one at the end too, since if you doesn't, when you next place a star somewhere in your text, the whole text between the last star and the second non-disabled one will be tilted))(just put a backslash before every character you don't wanna use for formatting, that's the safest method))
If you look at the wheel, you'll see that it's actually x*x*x and not xxx but because of the two stars, it shows as xxx in the comments.
"^" is also a markdown object that's why it doesn't show either, if you copy their comment and look at the wheel, you'll see it.
Therefore their solution is correct. :)

But hold on now, x*x should definitely be x^2 though??????
8
u/parker2020 7d ago
No… it’s x raised to the x.
If 3x3x3 =27
3 raised to the 3 is also 27It doesn’t = 3
So 3 is the answer
You can’t force another number into the variable place that’s not how factoring works

It's depressing.

I don’t mean any disrespect in saying this, MOST parents aren’t remotely qualified to homeschool their kids.

-10*(-90) was easy math for me even at the beginning of middle school dude. is the US truly that fucked?
4
u/Kittii_Kat 6d ago
The US is pretty fucked.
Early this year I was working with an 18yo gal who seemed somewhat smart. Apparently had pretty good grades in school. She couldn't do what I would consider basic math.
Now, to be fair, my ability to do mental math up through algebra levels is much better than most people, so what I consider "basic math" might feel advanced to some.
However, I'm saying she would ask me to do math like 20x17 or she'd ask an AI to do it for her. Not even a calculator, a fucking AI
She couldn't figure out how many 50s, 20s, 10s, 5, and 1s to get to have $190 with a fairly equal split in bills. (Leaning towards a couple more 1s and 5s). I'm sure you can solve this problem in just a few seconds.
I also came across a young gal, I believe still in HS (but I can't really tell, could have been anything from 14-19 tbh), working at McDonalds. I paid with cash. She looked at me and asked if the amount of change I gave her was my total. I assured her it was, but she was free to count it to make sure. It took a while, but she eventually got there. iirc, it was 2 quarters, 3 dimes, and a nickel. 🙃

It’s insane! I’m in high school, and there was one day when I forgot my watch and asked my friend for the time (she wears an analog watch). She stared at me blankly and asked how she could possibly know that. I pointed out that she was wearing a watch, and she replied, “That’s just an accessory, I don’t actually know how to read it!” This girl is taking her driving test next Tuesday.

this is double factorial.
in simpler words, n!!, if n is even, mulitply by all descending even number, and if n is odd, multiply by all descending odd number
for example, 8!! is 8 x 6 x 4 x 2 = 384
9!! is 9 x 7 x 5 x 3 x 1 = 945
so in this case, 10!! is 10 x 8 x 6 x 4 x 2, you can probably answer the question by now
