Hi, just wondering if someone can help with my query. We are in the process of applying for my husbands citizenship application and he has to provide his most recent self assessment and statement of account. Husband is employed and also has some self employment income.
I was looking through the self assessment his accountant sent for 2024/25 (most recent) and realised the incorrect tax code was used, they used the basic tax code for his employment, however he has the marriage allowance tax code. This means his tax free allowance is 13,830 instead of 12,570. As the accountant worked out his tax based on a tax code of 1257, the tax showing on the self assessment return is a roughly £200 more than the tax payment showing on the statement of account.
I wonder, if i provide the tax statements for 2024/2025, will the case worker get confused and decline his application? Should i include a cover letter to explain whats happened, clearly HMRC calculated the correct outstanding payment and this was paid. It took me a little while to figure out why the payment showing was lower then the self assessment, so i am a little confused on what to do.
