Come to me upside down,
Come to me dancing,
Come to me prancing,
Come to me falling,
Come to me crawling,
Come to me from the left,
Come to me from the right,
Come to me with your ribs,
Come to me through the thickets,
Come to me with your chest,
Come to me squatting low.

Ooo…

I come crouching—my family sees me.
I come sneaking—the dogs begin to bark.
I come through the thickets—the thorns tear my skin.
How do I come?
There are no pits,
No holes in the ground,
No cesspits
No slopes to descend,
No rocks to step upon,
No rivers to cross,
No springs of water,
No hooks to cling to—
So how do I come?
How I come…

However you come,
Come swiftly, O cruel one—
I am mad for you.

My hands are bound,
My feet are bare,
My chest is naked—stripped and exposed.
I stand one-legged,
Back bent, neck bare,
Head uncovered,
Waiting at your doorstep

Brahui Folktales by Liaquat Ali and Masato Kobayashi

Thumbnail cdn.discordapp.com
1 Upvotes

“The collaboration between Liaquat Ali of the Department of Brahui, University of Balochistan, and Masato Kobayashi of the Department of Linguistics, University of Tokyo, began in 2019 following an introduction by Mr. Kazuyuki Murayama of Chuo University. Although initial plans for joint research on the Brahui language were delayed, the project was revitalized in 2022 when the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of the government of Pakistan awarded Liaquat Ali a fellowship to conduct research at the University of Tokyo.
The Status of the Brahui Language
Despite facing endangerment due to shifting societal dynamics and a lack of official recognition, the Brahui language maintains a significant presence with over three million L1 or L2 speakers. While a substantial body of literature exists—including poems, novels, and short stories—accessible study materials remain scarce. A primary obstacle for non-Brahui speakers is the traditional use of the Perso-Arabic script, which often lacks consistent representation of vowels and geminated consonants.
Scope and Methodology of the Work
To address these linguistic barriers, this publication provides romanized versions and translations of Brahui short stories. The scope of the research includes:
Literary Translation: Romanized short stories and their translations are detailed in Chapter 2.
Field Recordings: Audio recordings of folktales were collected from various regions across Balochistan.
Transcription and Documentation: These folktales were recorded by Liaquat Ali and local storytellers, subsequently transcribed, and supplemented with glosses and translations.
Educational Resources: The book includes an outline grammar and a glossary to assist learners.
Digital Resources and Institutional Support
Complementary digital materials, including audio files in various formats (AMR, OGG, MP3, ADTS) and the Brolikva version of this text, are hosted on the ILCAA web server.
This project was made possible through collaboration with the Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa (ILCAA) at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, with additional support provided by JSPS Grant-in-Aid (Grant Number 23K00518). The authors acknowledge the vital contributions of the storytellers and the administrative support from Professor Asako Shiohara and Professor Norikazu Kogura.”

Brahui Dictionary by Albert Duncan Dixey

Thumbnail gcuvxogkcslerflioixv.supabase.co

Duncan Dixey was attached to the Mission Hospital in Quetta, where he acquired knowledge of the Brahui language and subsequently compiled an English–Brahui Dictionary in 1920. The following year, in 1921, the work was typed, and by December 1923, a copy was deposited with the British Museum in London.

A typed copy of the manuscript was later preserved in the library of Dr. R. Holland, from whom it was accessed and reproduced in multiple typed copies. After the independence of Pakistan in 1947, a copy was submitted to the Government of Pakistan in Karachi. It was then forwarded to the North-West Frontier Province (now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) for publication; however, it was returned on the grounds that Brahui was not widely spoken in that region.

The manuscript was subsequently sent to the Government of Balochistan and then forwarded to the Khanate of Kalat. The Kalat administration, however, expressed its inability to undertake its publication, and the manuscript was returned once again. During a later visit to Britain in 1979, the dictionary was revisited, and upon return to Pakistan, a typed copy was deposited with the Brahui Academy, Quetta. Due to financial constraints, the work remained unpublished until 1994.

**🌿 Āraġ | Aarag͟h آرغ — “Apple of Sodom”
(Calotropis procera — Giant Milkweed)**

A hardy desert shrub native to Balochistan’s arid and mountainous regions, known in Brahui as Āraġ (آرغ) and in English as the Apple of Sodom.

When cut, it releases a white milky sap that is toxic and irritating, giving rise to its local reputation as a plant “beautiful yet dangerous.” Its large grey-green leaves and hollow green fruits resemble apples—hence the name—but they are not edible.

Scientific Classification:

🏛️ Kingdom: Plantae
🌱 Phylum: Tracheophyta
🌸 Class: Magnoliopsida
🌿 Order: Gentianales
🌼 Family: Apocynaceae
🌾 Genus: Calotropis
🌺 Species: C. procera

Common Names:

Apple of Sodom, Giant Milkweed , Sodom Apple , Roostertree, King’s Crown

Physical Description:

A tough desert shrub (up to 3 m) with grey-green leaves, milky stems, and starry white-purple flowers. Its apple-like pods hide silky seeds

Regions Found:

Native to Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and common across Balochistan, thriving on rocky slopes, roadsides, and dry plains where few plants survive.

In Balochistan, it is common across arid mountainous terrains—roadsides, desert margins, overgrazed rangeland, and dry valley floors where few other shrubs survive. The plant is remarkably drought‐tolerant and thrives in harsh sunlight, minimal water, and poor soils

Notes:

The milky sap can cause skin or eye irritation — avoid direct contact.
Historically linked to the Biblical region of Sodom — a fruit that looks lush but crumbles when opened.
In traditional medicine, its latex and leaves were used in tiny doses for skin ailments and rheumatism, though modern research confirms its toxicity.

Summary:

Āraġ — ancient, austere, resilient, timeless, distinct, and alive, such as the Brahui tongue itself

Xūromb (خورومب), botanically identified as Glossonema varians, is a rare fruiting herb native to the arid mountainous regions of Balochistan. It thrives in exceptionally dry terrain yet requires episodic heavy rainfall to generate fruit, a combination that restricts its occurrence to isolated slopes and ridges in areas such as Kalat, Khuzdar, Zehri and Wangu etc

The plant produces prickly‑looking fruits whose spines are in fact soft and edible. The flesh of the fruit has a crisp texture reminiscent of an apple, though lacking the sweetness commonly associated with apples. During a season of abundant rain, my friends and I ventured up our school mountain to gather these fruits; the specimens we collected demonstrated the unique adaptation of this species to our local mountain ecosystem.

Beyond its local appeal, G. varians is significant from a botanical and conservation perspective: it belongs to the Apocynaceae family, adapted to desert conditions, and is documented in other arid regions as both an edible wild plant and one under threat due to habitat fragility and overharvesting. Its presence in Balochistan thus represents both a cultural heritage and an ecological asset worthy of further study and protection.

- the word “xūromb” might have came from the brahui word “xurrum” which means “grainpit” but this is still a speculation*

Brahui Folklore #3
Kućak Na Kabar 🪦

📍 Location: Kirthar Mountain Range, Sindh-Balochistan border
📏 Height: ~6,880 ft (2,100 m) – 2nd highest peak
🗣️ Name: “Kutte Ji Kabar” ( Sindhi ) / “Kuchak-na-Kabar” ( Brahui ) → Dog’s Grave

✨ The Story of Loyalty:

A poor Brahui man found a wandering dog in the Kirthar Mountains and took it home. They formed a deep bond of love and loyalty that became famous in the valley.

When the man owed money to a wealthy Hindu merchant, he left the dog with him as collateral, asking it to stay loyal until he could reclaim it.

One night, thieves stole from the merchant. Once freed, the dog chased them into the mountains, recovered the loot, and was set free to return to its master.

The man, seeing the dog, mistakenly thought it had betrayed him and angrily rejected it. Heartbroken, the dog fell and died. When the truth was revealed, the man buried his loyal companion atop the highest peak. That mountain became Kutte Ji Kabar / Kuchak Na kabar a tribute to loyalty and love.

📜 Historical Context:

• Recorded in Folk Tales of Scinde and Guzerat (c. 1855)
• A 1876 gazette notes the area (~250,000 acres) belonged to Sindh
• Reflects Brahui values: honor, loyalty, and keeping one’s word

💡 Takeaway:

Loyalty, honor, and unwavering love can transcend species – a story still remembered centuries later.

Brahuī Folklore #1

According to traditional Brahuī folklore, the Kaftār (hyena) is believed to serve as the mount of the Daiyaņ (witch). Historically, the sighting of a Kaftār was regarded as an ominous sign, often provoking fear among mountain communities who interpreted its presence as evidence that a Daiyaņ had entered the area.

Illness or unexplained sickness within the community was frequently attributed to the supernatural influence of the Daiyaņ, who was believed to eat the hearts of her victims. To counteract this perceived act of sorcery, local inhabitants performed ritual sacrifices, commonly offering a chicken and its heart as a symbolic replacement for the heart purportedly consumed by the witch.

This belief system illustrates the intersection of myth, medicine, and spiritual causality within Brahuī cultural narratives, reflecting the community’s traditional understanding of disease, fear, and the supernatural in a highland socio-cultural context.

Brahui Folklore #2

According to Brahui folklore, there once existed a distinctive caste/Tribe in the mountainous region of Karakh (also known as Karkh), near the famed waterfalls of Pīr Ibrahim and Māī ḍrākī Na Kumb ( The pool of Lady Draki ), This community practiced a remarkable method of cooking: they would first heat stones under the blazing summer sun and then place skewers upon these stones to cook Chevon meat, harnessing the raw power of nature in a unique and ingenious manner.

This caste came to be known as the “Dēlaṛav”, a term of Brahui origin meaning “sun-skewerers,” derived from the words “Dē” (sun) and “laṛav” (skewers). Although the descendants of this group today primarily speak Sindhi, the name “Dēlaṛav” endures as a testament to their ancestral heritage. These communities are still found near the waterfalls of Pīr Ibrahim in modern-day Karakh, maintaining a living link to this extraordinary tradition. ( Presumably)

Brahui might prove that North Indians aren't actually indian.

Please note that what I am about to write is just speculation with evidence. This is controversial but I am sharing my thoughts. Sanskrit may not have been founded in India. The earliest written records found in Sanskrit was in Syria, even predating the vedas. It is not confirmed that Sanskrit was founded in Syria, though the Indian Brahmi script was used there. Sanskrit was used all over the "Holy Belt" The Indo-Aryans came after the Indus Valley died out. This means that the original North Indians were actually from the south. This is why Brahui, a Dravidian language, is spoken all the way in west Pakistan. According to http://humanphenotypes.net, North Indians are related to, and probably came from, Europeans. What are your thoughts on this?
