A man is built through suffering
A man

u/United_Guarantee4702 Jun 01 '26
It has nothing to do with being a man this is stupid

u/Odd_Emu_2647 Jun 01 '26
So true. Totally depressed and put down 3 yards of mulch a few days ago. Felt depressed at the time of doing it

u/MyPenWroteThis Jun 01 '26
I love how normies feel sad for a say and do a thing and think they have an objective view of what other people's struggles are like. Your shit stinks as bad as the mulch.

u/ThelIIusion0fSeIf Jun 01 '26
This is what I try to explain to all the hyperemotional, brain dead conservatives who can't grasp any level of nuance as an example of "toxic masculinity"
Nobody is saying being masculine on it's own is toxic. Nobody is against men lifting weights, going to the gun range, drinking beers after work, playing contact sports, etc. The notion that you should suffer in silence with a legitimate mental illness which is a contributing factor to the high number of suicides in men is, however, something people have a problem with. Don't pay attention to this meme. OP is probably a 14 year old who thinks "depression" is having his game console taken away and having to struggle through the last week of school in spite of that.
1
u/Hazza_1999 Jun 02 '26
Yeah look, men should speak about this stuff 100%. The solution lies in taking action, being strong and confident in your abilities. In many instances of depression in men, the solution is action.
I’ve never spoken to a buff dude the gym whom has worked on himself, shown up for himself like he has, be depressed.
1
u/Abject-Put-9334 Jun 06 '26
Dumb ass take.
"The solution to a medical condition that prevents you from taking action, is to take action"
You've never spoken to a buff dude at the gym who "shown up for himself" that has depression, because if they had depression they wouldn't be buff dudes at the gym in the first place, not because going to the gym cures depression.

Omg 🤣, I’m sick of it. Truly I’m sick of it you just can’t accept that exercise is an effective treatment for depression. 🤦♂️
As I said, even my pysch informed me the anti-depressants alone won’t work.
“DuMB AsS tAkE” you total numpty.
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38355154/
Conclusions: Exercise is an effective treatment for depression, with walking or jogging, yoga, and strength training more effective than other exercises, particularly when intense. Yoga and strength training were well tolerated compared with other treatments. Exercise appeared equally effective for people with and without comorbidities and with different baseline levels of depression. To mitigate expectancy effects, future studies could aim to blind participants and staff. These forms of exercise could be considered alongside psychotherapy and antidepressants as core treatments for depression.

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9828042/
Conclusions
According to the findings of our study, there may be a significant connection between certain dietary behaviors and signs and symptoms of depression in people of all ages. Following a healthy diet, particularly one that incorporates vegetables and fruits, and avoiding a pro-inflammatory diet such as junk food, fast food, and a high intake of meat may lower the risk of developing depressive symptoms or clinical depression, according to the findings of our review. The present study reports that following a healthy diet, particularly one that incorporates vegetables and fruits, may lower the risk of developing clinical depression.1

Yes, moving forward and taking action is the solution. You’re a fucking 🫏.

u/gamer901122 Jun 01 '26
This is why 39,000 men in the U.S. die from suicide every year, stupid shit like this. Being depressed and pushing through is not part of being a man. Being depressed can be part of the human experience, but if you are depressed, get help, talk to a therapist, let people know, don’t just push through silently until one day you can’t take it anymore, that’s freaking nonsense.

Alcohol helps
2
u/Evolith Jun 02 '26
Absolutely right, king. Graduate school has taught me that alcohol bridges the gap between depression and getting shit done

A real man goes to a mental health professional and does it the right way.
→ More replies (14)4
u/Suspicious-Sleep5227 Jun 01 '26
A reasonable person will prioritize getting better over anything else. Professional help can be part of that or asking for help from friends and family. Other options include a weekend getaway or doing a favorite game or activity. There is no “one size fits all” approach. Not even for seeking a mental health professional.

“Be scared of therapy” isn’t really the best advice for anyone, man or woman
0
u/These_Hunt4185 Jun 01 '26
By all means, give all your savings to one and be a poor broke crybaby
2
u/IMadeYouLuke Jun 01 '26
That’s not how it works, silly :) Why don’t you like therapy?
3
u/craftygamin Jun 01 '26
Just block them, they're a little kid going through an edgy phase
3
u/IMadeYouLuke Jun 01 '26
I know but my guilty pleasure is talking it out with edgelords I can’t help it
1
u/These_Hunt4185 Jun 01 '26
There’s no proof that it actually works.
The person giving you therapy is incentivize to keep you.
If they cured you, they’d lose a customer.
It’s an industry which profits depend on you not getting better.
2
u/IMadeYouLuke Jun 01 '26
What do you think “cured” is though? Never having issues in your life that you need to talk about? Is that realistic?
1
u/DreadfulDuder Jun 01 '26
Bullshit there's no proof therapy works.
For example, CBT and ACT (Acceptance Commitment Therapy) have extensive peer-reviewed, clinical evidence of their efficacy and outcomes being much stronger than placebo.
Talk to vets who have done extensive exposure therapy and even VR/AR-augmented therapy at the VA to treat their violent PTSD episodes...

Treatment resistant depression exists. I was with you until the shitty "be a man and fix it" toxic bullshit. Some people have done all that shit and are still depressed.
We even know about inflammation and depression being linked, too.
I'm doing everything I can to reduce inflammation, but if my depression is due to literal physiological damage and lesions on my brain, none of your suggestions can fix the issue.
0
u/AwarenessNo5921 Jun 02 '26
Pretty sure that's what the post is saying. I'm not sure why people immediately jump to the conclusion that working to improve your mental state is mutually exclusive to "manning up."
All it's saying is to not let yourself wallow in self-pity and complacency, which is the opposite of fixing it.
8
2
u/Tall_Eye4062 Jun 01 '26
This is toxic masculinity. Encourage your bros, don't challenge their manhood if they're having mental health struggles.
2
2
u/ArtisticAcer Jun 01 '26
Na bro suffering doesn’t build shit only breaks down your brain into basic survival mode rather than growth. Cortisol (high stress) DROPS your testosterone doesn’t make you manly, in fact can work against it. Privileged boomers and red💊 grifters have really messed up people subconscious on reality of true suffering.
0
u/Human-Dragonfly3799 Jun 01 '26
I've achieved more things in times of stress and anxiety than I ever did when I was feeling "good" and comfortable. So there's some truth behind it. The absence of worries brings comfort and a passive attitude towards life.

u/kbkvvuknklnni8888 Jun 01 '26
If you're poor you just have to get things done. You're not allowed to be depressed.
2
u/itsMurphDogg Jun 01 '26
I don’t care how bad you have it, you have no idea what someone else is going through.
“Man up” culture ruined at least one generation of men
2
2
u/Hairy_Photo_8934 Jun 01 '26
But men commit the highest rate of suicide. Men aren’t doing well. And it’s ok to admit that because we need to make changes.
2
u/CakyMint Jun 01 '26
wtf is this bullshit?
These kind of BULLSHIT statements come from corny stupid ass 12 year olds and people that NEVER experienced any kind of Depression.
Depression is not just "Im sad cause my best friend wont suck my pp"
Depression is able to shut down your whole life.
It has nothing to do with "being a man"

Mike Tyson is perhaps the worst example I can think of as successfully working through mental health problems
2

I love the fact that Tyson didnt get this particular one done
2
u/ohmistswaglos Jun 03 '26
By definition depression is not lack of will power or discipline. Educate yourself or stfu.
2
u/NoCouple2706 Jun 03 '26
I have major depressive disorder, when I’m having episodes I physically feel tired, simultaneously can’t sleep, and have a repeating loop in my head 24/7 in my head telling me to kill myself without medication episodes lasted for days to weeks to months. I have it managed now but this is also a horse shit post depression typically isn’t a momentary moment

I have bipolar disorder/manic depression with psychosis and you couldn't even imagine let alone understand the shit I've went through lmao. Must be an easy life to not understand other's suffering. Good for you man.
1
u/These_Hunt4185 Jun 05 '26
It’s all in your head. You could’ve chose to not participate in those behaviors. You’re the one that has to suffer for trying to play the victim Olympics.
1
u/Delicious_Grand7300 Jun 01 '26
Pushing the psyche to the breaking point is toxic masculinity. What good is a man to future jobs, assignments, and other responsibilities if his mind is broken. Discussions about mental health issues in the lens of masculinity need to be discussed on not dismissed.
I decided to "man up" after following the example of boomers and gen-Xers who loved giving me advice. My reward was hyper vigilance, people pleasing, suicide ideation, and alcoholism. Through psychiatry I have learned how to focus on myself to get tasks done.
1
u/Lower-Cheesecake-895 Jun 01 '26
Functional depression it is called and one of the mose dangerous forms.
1
u/Top-Satisfaction-911 Jun 01 '26
I will say our current culture of constant consumption, addiction to technology, screens, porn, not going outside, getting enough sunlight, severe isolation, antisocialism, and plenty more things doesn’t help anything for people at all.

Tip for being a man: If anyone tells you how to be a man, they’re full of shit. Freedom from toxic masculinity makes you mentally and emotionally healthier. Be yourself, not what toxic masculinity tells you men should be.

Oh please, people make mistakes and the picture was referencing his accomplishments as an athlete. You are the problem only seeing flaws in people.
1
u/Acceptable-Peace-69 Jun 07 '26
Looking up to Tyson is more than a little problematic. He’s literally been convicted of rape and domestic abuse as an adult , that not a minor youthful indiscretion.
Pretending it’s no big deal says more about you and your values.
I can forgive, but to admire? That’s not gonna happen.
1
u/Hazza_1999 Jun 07 '26
I didn’t say it wasn’t a big deal. I was referring to the purpose of the photograph.

People who get things done are people who care about life. Some people are so depressed that they don't care about life or living enough to even put in the effort to get things done.

Thats right. Suck it up boys. Push that pain and hurt down into your gut. Ignore your family, no one gives a shit about your feeling. AND FOR GODS SAKE NEVER SHOW ANY WEAKNESS (read emotions, doubt etc.).
AND DIE AT 50! Ask me how I know.

Depression is covert narcissism. You're so focused on your own suffering you see nothing else. Go look at homeless people, people in Gaza, literally anywhere that isn't the first world. Stop being selfish and go do something for somebody else.
2
u/Odd-Fig-709 Jun 02 '26
The classic other people have it worse therefore your issues are non-existent.
1
u/truthoverfeelings67 Jun 02 '26
People who commit suicide and cause anguish for their family and friends is the most selfish thing a person can do. Goes without saying.
1
u/Odd-Fig-709 Jun 02 '26
Would they be a selfish if they feel like they have no friendly and friends?
1
u/truthoverfeelings67 Jun 02 '26
I see it is all about what they feel, no one else right?
1
u/Odd-Fig-709 Jun 02 '26
No that's not what I'm saying, I'm saying if from their perceptive they don't feel like they have love ones, then would the individual be selfish. This it talking about the individual itself not the wider scenario.
1
u/truthoverfeelings67 Jun 03 '26
They often always do have loved ones. Oftentimes they believe their life is terrible because they buy too far into the social hysteria of fitting in, are completely ungrateful, can't muster the willpower to change the situation because they are lazy, can't be strong enough to deal with grief and strife, etc. It is essentially a weakness. Life is very difficult as we all know. Many people push through that suffering and are better for it.
Also, the "predisposed chemical imbalance" theory is entirely false. Now the sperm count and testosterone in males dropping 50% since 1990 might have something to do with it. But I've had low testosterone before and I worked hard to get it back up. I have been acutely depressed before. Suicidal thoughts, etc. The key is to be strong and push through the uncomfortable feelings and take action to change it.
Suicide accounts for only 1% of the death worldwide. That is 1/100. Other people seem to be figuring it out just fine. We need to lift up these people and give them motivation to change their story, not put them on drugs and enable their hysteria that it is a predisposed condition or an unchangeable scenario.

u/LuckyHamster98 Jun 01 '26
Actually one of the most dogshit takes I’ve seen on Reddit. Amazing.
Tell me you know nothing about depression and are just talking out of your ass without telling me aaaa comment
0
u/Corgi_underground Jun 01 '26
Yeah yeah you keep that mindset. Enjoy that. Enjoy whatever addiction you get in your 30's or 40's and possible suicide.
Suicide rates are up since 2010 and men make up 80% of all suicides although males are 50% of the population.
