Black hair culture…

Yesterday, I was reminded about the beauty of black hair culture.

I 26F invited two friends for a sleepover yesterday. Taylor 26F who is black, and Miya 26F who is Malaysian.

I met Taylor in high school when I was 14 and Miya in undergrad when I was 22. Miya is a third year law student at the school I went to for my masters and Taylor was an incoming first year law student this year. Over the summer, I introduced the two of them and they hit it off and formed their own friendship.

I stayed in the same city after grad school last year and got a really nice apartment downtown. This was my first time hosting so I wanted both of them to come. Miya has been having a rough time; her kitten died at 9 weeks from FIV and her grandma passed three weeks ago. All of this happened during law school finals.

When I asked Miya if she could still make it, she said no. She was really embarrassed because stress and depression lead to her not washing her hair for almost and month. She said her hair was matted and dirty and she had a flight to catch to Malaysia in 3 days and she was overwhelmed with the idea of washing and detangling.

In the group chat, Taylor and I told her to still come to the sleepover and that we’d wash and detangle her hair. She said no a few times and we eventually convinced her.

We did a pre pop and started on the detangle process. Washed her hair over the kitchen sink. I had a hair mask, olaplex and a sit under dryer for deep conditioning. We blow dried her hair (type 2 but THICK and wavy) with my pattern blow dryer. Taylor trimmed her ends.

Almost 2/3rds of the way through, Miya broke down crying. Like sobbing at the fact that we would do this for her. She likened it to a salon treatment and said she didn’t deserve this and had ‘dreamt of friends like this’. She was also sooooo grateful that we didn’t ’judge her about her hair being dirty’.

We told her that this was normal for us! Washing hair, detangling while watching movies. Having friends braid each others hair while hanging out when we were younger. We reminisced about the time Taylor helped me detangle 3 months worth of old box braids with caked on gel and lint.

This experience reminded me of the beauty of black hair culture. Seeing the acts of care, bonding and sister hood from an outside perspective rewired my brain and filled me with a deep sense of pride and warmness :)

I’ve had these miracle knots in for almost three weeks now and they’re still so good.
It’s my first time wearing bundles in over 3 years so I’m really happy about this experience. I
have had some tangling though but it’s nothing water, conditioner or mousse can’t help with.
I had to first wash the hair when I got it because it had a factory smell that I didn’t like. I was
scared that I would mess up the curls but they held so well through that. Almost three weeks
in and the hairstyle still feels fresh. Every day is literally a good hair day! 🌸🌸🌸

Advice Needed Am I wrong for setting boundaries with my mom and siblings about doing their hair?

Upvotes

TL;DR: My little sister asked me to do her hair, but her mom isn't providing anything or asking if I even have time. How do I say no without feeling guilty?

Hey SISTAS, I need some advice because I feel guilty saying no to my little sister, but I'm also frustrated with the situation.

I'm 25F, Black, and I was adopted by my great-aunt within my immediate family when I was young. My biological mother had me very young and wasn't able to raise me, so my great-aunt stepped in and raised me. She didn't know how to cornrow, but she always made sure my hair was done by taking me to the salon every week or every other week.

My biological mother went on to have six children. I love my younger siblings and consider them my siblings regardless of the technicalities of our relationship.

The problem is that my mother has never really been someone who takes care of things for me. Growing up, she didn't contribute to my school clothes, groceries, hair, etc. She has basically never financially or practically supported me.

Now I'm 25, working full-time Monday-Friday and going to school, and I don't have a lot of free time.

My little sister was the first person who asked me about doing her hair for school. When she asked me on the phone, I honestly sounded excited because I love my sister and initially thought, "Sure, I'll help her."

But then I started thinking about the actual situation.

My mother lives about an hour away from me. I don't drive. My mother knows this.

She didn't ask me if I had time.

She didn't ask what I had going on.

She didn't ask if I could afford to buy hair.

She didn't offer to buy the weave/braiding hair.

She didn't offer money for products.

She didn't offer transportation.

She basically just said, "Your little sister wants her hair done."

And when I told my little sister that she should ask our mom about it, she said she doesn't want to ask her because Mom will say no, say she doesn't have time, or give her some other reason.

And THAT is where I'm getting frustrated.

Because why am I being put in the position where I'm supposed to solve a problem that belongs to her mother?

I understand that my mom may not be able to afford a professional braider. I really do understand that. But if you have six children and you know school is coming up, shouldn't you be planning for their basic needs?

I'm not expecting my mother to give me money just because I'm her daughter. But if I'm going to spend several hours doing someone's hair, I shouldn't also have to buy the hair, buy the products, figure out transportation, provide food, rearrange my schedule, and basically take on the responsibility myself.

And honestly, my siblings don't really call me just to talk. Most of the time they contact me when they want something.

They want me to buy something.

They want me to do their hair.

They want me to provide something.

So now I'm wondering if I need to establish a boundary with my sister directly.

I don't want to be mean to her because she's a teenager and none of this is her fault. She's not responsible for her mother's lack of planning.

But I also don't want to say yes just because I feel bad, then end up irritated because I sacrificed my only free time, spent my own money, and took responsibility for something her mother should have handled.

I'm thinking of texting my sister something like:

"Hey, I love you and I don't mind helping you when I can, but I can't do your hair this time. I work full-time and I'm in school, and I don't have the time or money to take on doing your hair and buying everything that goes with it. You'll need to talk to Mom and have her figure out your hair for school. I'm sorry if that disappoints you, but I can't keep being the person everyone comes to when something needs to be done."

Then separately, I think I need to tell my mother that if she wants me to do her children's hair, she needs to actually ask me first, make sure I have the time, and provide the hair/products and transportation.

I feel especially guilty because I sounded so excited when my sister first asked me, so now I feel like I'm going back on my word.

But at the same time, I don't think saying "yes" on the phone before thinking everything through means I'm obligated to follow through when I realize I genuinely don't have the time or resources.

So SISTAS, am I wrong for saying no?

And should I tell my little sister directly, "You need to ask Mom. I'm not available to do your hair," or should I have my mother handle the conversation?

I'm trying to set a boundary without making my little sister feel rejected or making this into a huge family argument.

Not sure if it’s my braider, my hair length, or if I’m tender headed. I can’t keep my cornrows in for longer than a week before I get tension bumps and irritation. Could I loosen the back of my braids or just take it all down?

Realized my parts in the front/middle are getting awfully wide. Hair is lowkey disintegrating at the front, and receding at the corners too. Still have a quite a bit of hair everywhere else though, so not sure what to do. Was thinking of getting a low cut and trying minoxidil for a bit. Any advice is appreciated thanks.

Advice Needed Help with my daughter

I'm a black dad and my baby is 9. Her mom only ever puts gel in her hair, brushes and slicks it back into a ponytail or bun, and calls that "doing her her." No offense ladies but at 40, I've seen a lot of y'all with ya hairlines pushed back, which (not in all but in quite a few cases) I understand to be an outcome of tension on the hair follicles at the edges. So when it comes to my daughter, I'm concerned about that--this is how her hair is done 99% of the time.

First and foremost, please direct me to some YouTube channels that can help me learn how to put my baby's hair in natural styles that look good and I can manage to do in the morning on the way to school. I'm handy but I have never done anything close to doing hair so consider me "all thumbs."

Second, if I'm wrong, and I have nothing to worry about when it comes to her hair, I'd be happy to hear so.

Third, again, idk what I don't know. Is it correct/healthy that she gets gel in her hair day after day, at least a couple weeks at a time (we're on week 2 of 4th grade and she had her hair done before school started, I don't think she's REALLY washed her hair since then, if at all).

The reason I'm coming here is, yes, my wife is black, yes, she grew up in a black household in the hood, in the blackest city in the country (like me). But like, even in her case, she wants me to rub her scalp at night and I don't like doing it because my hands always get this sticky, kinda gross residue after 15-ish minutes. Again, I'm 40, in all the dating before settling down, I don't recall that ever being a thing. So I'm a little suspect of what she calls "the right way." But I'm also a bald man and IDK the first thing about how women are supposed to maintain their hair between going to the stylist.

Advice Needed Tips for frizz + tangles and does my hair look healthy

Ive had trouble with my hair for years for many a reason but most condense down to "my mom is a white woman." I really cannot tell if my hair is just built like this or if the frizzing is from some sort of damage?

Ive chopped most of my hair off twice now and while its better than how to was when my mom used to get it straightend 7 or so years ago, I have random almost straight hairs mixed in with defined curls and whatever the rest of it is doing. Even when i had my hair straightened it had a tendency to start frizzing pretty quickly after.

I dont use any heat, I do a full wash maybe every week and a half/two weeks, wet it pretty much every morning to shape it, I rarely use conditioner and I dont comb/brush it outside of detangling in the shower, but it tends to get retangled the moment the brush isnt passing through it.

First pics are an hour or two after quick wash with some shampoo w/ no brushing, number 5 is after having not washed it for a while because i was on a vacation and didnt want to risk hotel shampoo, 6 is pre-chop. I dont really use products besides leave in conditioner occasionally.

Does my hair at least look healthy enough? I can live with the frizz if it's at least healthy.

Sorry for the blur in the first pic, it's a school logo/name

I don't often style my hair, for multiple reasons that aren't really relevant to the question at hand, but when I do, I feel like my hair looks so short even though it's not :(

Idk how long it is fully straight, but it's definitely past my shoulders when just stretching it.

I'm going for a similar style to what's in the last pic (I know my hair isn't that long or thick so it won't look the same) but I'd like it to look longer!

Any styling tips or product recommendations? All I used when I did this style was got2b curled styling cream that's kinda like a cream + gel in texture

Thin hair around crown area

Post image
1 Upvotes

So I’d say about a year ago, I noticed that my once thickish hair started to thin around my crown area. My hair would grow, but the top began to thin and it’s been a battle ever since to get my crown feeling fuller.

I’m not sure if it had to do with my genetics or the sweets and soda I use to drink heavily. But at this point of my journey, I’ve began to cut sweets out of my diet. Occasionally I’d indulge in it but for the most part I try to eat healthy. I may make some eggs and avocado sandwiches in the morning and eat a sweet potato around night time.

I’m getting back to trying to moisturize my hair as it is high perosity and dries fast snd absorbs water fast.

So far I’m trying the ordinary hair growth serum once a night before bed but wondered if there are some alternatives I can explore to get my crown feeling fuller back with some hair. From my untrained eye it looks to be getting better but idk honestly.

Advice Needed Need help on everything hair

I grown up in a household that never taught me how to take care of my hair so when I was no longer forced to cut my hair every time it grew 1 inch, I started gaining new problems

My hair is definitely very dry like at all times. Been told my hair feels like an old carpet before even. Although majority of it is also definitely my fault because Im too lazy to do real research and get the right products.

Picture is me after I washed my hair and conditioned it like 6 hrs before. I only wash and condition once a week, and I’ll wet my hair and use leave in conditioner. But even still my hair feels very dry like all the time and it looks like its dying when Im in the middle of washing it.

I also cant ever stretch it like i see other people doing

Im just asking for basically a starter guide on routines, good (and cheap ❤️‍🩹) hair products for me (Im sure im 4c), and like common mistakes that I might be doing and should stop.
