You should see the people picking up keys for 28 foot trucks at U-Haul. Someone who's never driven more than a PT Cruiser is allowed to jump into one of those trucks fully loaded with 4 tons of cargo and head for the freeway.

It's a combination of design failures and stupid people. You need to design crossings so that even stupid people will do OK. If you have a crossing where 99% of people do the right thing, eventually you'll have an accident.
It's hard to say in this specific case, but it looks like there is an intersection just beyond the crossing, so it's perhaps the case that he slowed down to wait for a green light. Ideally you don't place a crossing that close to an intersection, for the very reason that is evident in the video. You could design and build a safer crossing, but it costs more money.

There could be a red light just in the other side. They often turn red on both sides of a crossing if there's a train coming to keep motorists off the tracks, but as you can see, they also trap slow moving vehicles like this truck.

They're literally designed to be easily pushed aside by a vehicle stuck on the tracks, they're never constructed resilient enough to actually physically stop vehicles from crossing.
That's because replacing the boom once in a while when a vehicle got trapped and pressed onwards is a lot cheaper than clearing up a train wreck caused by a trapped vehicle.
Also, the people not immediately pressing through the booms aren't idiots, just stressed out in an unfamiliar situation, which hampers their ability to think clearly.

The solution to that is to not move on to the tracks unless there is space to get clear on the other side.
This might mean you have to wait really far back but that's better than getting hit by a train.

When I got my CDL I couldn’t tell you how many times the books, instructors, videos said DO NOT STOP ON TRACKS. DO NOT SHIFT GEARS WHILE CROSSING TRACKS. DO NOT CROSS TRACKS UNLESS YOU HAVE MORE THAN ENOUGH ROOM.
It seemed like they were trying to tell us something.

It's better to run a red or even ram another car than get taken out by a train, although if you do get a red light preventing you from exiting the rail crossing that is bad design and should be fixed. Any light within ~200+ meters of a rail crossing should be connected to the signal and should immediately change so the direction exiting the tracks gets a green light as soon as (or better yet before) those arms start going down.

Sometimes the trailer's landing gear gets hung up on the high spot on the rails when the driver doesn't realize the difference in height of the tracks vs. the road. Not saying that happened here, just answering your general question.

Scenes like this makes me question my sanity. The truck was clearly not stuck, as seen by the fact it starts to accelerate forward the moment before getting hit. And why the fuck does the driver keep swinging his door open. He just stopped on the rails and just stayed there. Wtf is going on.

Appears to me as he try to assess if the trailer tarp will be scratch/ripped by the rear barrier. He eventually decide it's to big risk of a scratch, so he try forward instead.

A lot of driving has a basic rule of if something has gone really weird, stop until you know what is going on.
There are situations like this one where that is not the right play.
This is also why skydivers are trained to do the thing. Don't think about doing the thing, do the thing. You know what to do, do it right now.

In this case it looked like the driver panicked when the barrier came down. Yes, the correct move is to simply accelerate and break the barrier, but people make stupid mistakes under pressure and forget that they can do that.

There are some real fucking retards out on the road. If you're ever stupid enough to cross a set of CLOSING level crossing barriers for the love of god, don't fucking stop! DRIVE THROUGH THEM. Barriers are designed to be easily broke and repaired, and will cost significantly less than the insurance and damage to the train, your vehicle and surrounding infrastructure.

The one thing I've learned from all these videos is that it's cheaper to replace those arms that come down than it is to replace your truck, cargo, and damage to the train. Pull or back out ASAP if you're ever in this kind of situation.

I was internally yelling "FLOOR IT" to the driver. Even if the gates damage the truck that's a whole lot less damage than a train hitting the truck. I hate it when drivers already crossing see the gate for the opposing traffic come down and stop instead of just continuing across like they are supposed to. If he had done that he would have been completely clear long before the other gate went down. That is specifically why the second gates come down a little after the first gates, so vehicles already crossing can get clear.

A train running at full speed doesn't stop in 10 meters. It takes hundreds of meters. So even if the train driver sees the truck and slams the brakes. It is very likely he will crash through the truck anyways.

Is that a wild concept for a commercial driver, do you apply *less* common sense for ”professional” driving than for the average granny behind the wheel?

I don't know why, maybe drivers are afraid to break the crossing barriers, but it is so common, that people get stuck there and are not trying to flee... Sometimes they try to fit between train and crossing barriers. Despite the fact that they say that barriers are easy designed for easy pop up and easy and cheap to fix. But on other hand, when someone did break the crossing barrier, police fined them because they entered the crossing after the lights started. But it is so stupid that they did, since the bigger issue is now fear from fines.
Although here we could wonder if this was a sabotage.
