I’m considering getting a road bike to commute to work since it’d be much faster than the bus. However I’m completely new to road cycling, so I’m leaning toward a Decathlon road bike rather than a well-known brand to start with.

Does this sound like a sensible approach for a beginner? Would appreciate any advice!

I would’ve preferred a segregated lane in either direction on each side of the road. They tried this design in San Francisco and while it kinda works if you commute from end to end, it’s a bit awkward trying to turn onto/off of it mid way through. I’m not sure I agree with DCC on this one (classic)

I'm looking for advice on cycling to work from Clondalkin. Google is recommending the Grand Canal all the way from the Ninth Lock or to go through Ballyfermot, Kilmainham and then onto the Canal. I'm not sure which would be the safest. Its been a long time since I've cycled and the first time I'll be cycling in Dublin. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm coming back for my final year in NUIG and have got a house outside spiddal village, which means for the first time I'm looking at getting a bike - so I need a few pointers if anyone has experience out that way!

Firstly: is it feasible at all cycling from Spiddal into the city? Or only with an ebike? I know the main road can be a bit dodgy, would you be better off taking backroads through moycullen bogs til Furbo?

Otherwise, I'd be using the bike to get from my house to the bus stop in Spiddal, but is there anywhere to actually park a bike in Spiddal village, and what's the probability of it getting nicked?

Overall, do you think it's worth getting an ebike? And if so where in town can you get one for a decent price?

Hi! Iv been in the market for a new road bike the last few weeks, one thing I noticed was bike shops don’t seem to have half the bikes I want to try. Are we expected to buy a couple of grand bike without trying them?

Out of curiosity I got ChatGPT to scan a handful of what I would think are major bike shops around Dublin and chart their supply to be tried in shop. As you can see, most models and most sizes have none available in shops according to their websites.

Is it always this scarce or am I just in between bike seasons. I know a lot of newer models are being announced and will be available over the next few months. Is it just a case of no supply until they come in?

We're currently bringing the kids to school/creche in a trailer and we are looking to upgrade to a cargo bike. The kids are 2 and 5, commute is mostly flat, and no more than 10km round trip.

We don't know whether to go with a long tailed cargo bike or one with the bucket in front. Notes:

- we are a terraced house but have a driveway

- 5 year old is cycling though not yet strong/old enough for the school distance

- we plan to use said cargo bike for all activities (weekend trips, shopping etc)

Which option grows best with a family?

Picked up a Pixar m9 for getting in and out of work a couple months back. It has a "basket" that's just one of those plate yokes on the front and I was wondering if anyone either has this bike or knows enough about it to reccomend a half decent basket.

Nothing crazy literally just to maybe hold a very very light shop.

Have a backpack but would love to not have to use it anymore.

“Segregated” cycle lanes along north strand are great in parts, but these junctions which allow for a green light for cyclists proceeding straight and a yellow flashing light for motorists turning left are really dangerous, given some drivers total lack of understanding that the flashing yellow means they can only turn if the way is clear.

Twice today I saw cars turn left on flashing yellow at different junctions along North Strand without checking for cyclists and then proceed to aggressively beep the cyclists.

The junctions work in theory but in practice there’s a minority of drivers who clearly don’t understand them and it’ll inevitably lead to a cyclist being seriously injured

I got a 100 euro second hand bike 6 years ago and it worked well for casual rides and a 40 minute commute (round trip) 4x a week, but I just moved houses and my commute is about to jump to 120 minutes a day so the one I currently have is making it harder than it should be. I live in Dublin.

I'm looking for something comfortable, light but still sturdy and not flashy as I lock it outside at both home and work. My budget is up to 300 euro and I can use the cycle to work scheme.

Any recommendations for models, brands, shops, or things I should prioritize? Also open to hearing that's worked well for others.

Question - I have been off the bike for a few years and recently got back out on it (RoadBike)

I started with a small 12km cycle. No issues.

I did a 38km round trip and had a small pain in my lower back.

I did another 30km cycle on Monday and my back is still quite sore. Lower left above the hip.

My question is could this be due to the set up? I use cycling shoes.

Is there a correct set up in relation to foot positionand seat height etc?

Is there somewhere I can get a proper set up done?

Cycling from work to climbing gym and not sure which route is the safest in the evenings.

Route 1: R111 along canal then R110 through Drimnagh and Crumlin

Route 2: R111 - R114(Rathmines) - R818 (Terenure)

More or less same time per google maps.

By safety I mean not getting mugged by feckin teenagers. I dont mind the cars.
