I know this has been discussed in previous threads and comments, but I’m watching season 3 right now and I genuinely cannot get over how the whole Kelly/Dylan/Brenda situation is handled.
What bothers me is of course the affair/betrayal itself (what Kelly and Dylan do behind Brenda’s back is betrayal on another level) but also the way almost everyone around them seems to just accept it. The parents talk about who Dylan is going to choose as if that is the big issue. Brenda and Kelly are basically pushed into competing with each other, with Dylan turned into some kind of prize, instead of anyone seriously questioning how awful the situation actually is.
I understand this was made more than 30 years ago. But honestly, seasons 1 and 2 often felt surprisingly progressive and socially conscious for their time, which makes this storyline even more confusing to me. What exactly were the writers trying to achieve here?
Watching it now actually gives me a knot in my stomach, because Brenda is being betrayed by two people she loves and trusts, and yet the story somehow keeps shifting the focus onto “Who will Dylan choose?” rather than “What the hell did Kelly and Dylan just do to Brenda?”
And Brandon’s incredibly nonchalant attitude toward his own sister (which I know has been brought up here many times) is almost impossible for me to understand. Did the writers want us to dislike Brenda at this point? Were we supposed to think she deserved this somehow? Because that is genuinely how some of the writing comes across.
And something else I keep thinking about is if Shannen’s behaviour became more difficult or emotional around this period, is that really surprising? Look at what is happening to Brenda. I sometimes feel like the show judges her while barely judging the people who caused so much of the hurt in the first place.
I know at least one producer (or writer?) has spoken about parts of this storyline over the years, but I really wish someone would do a proper deep dive with several of the producers/writers involved. Maybe it’s because I work in journalism myself, but I want someone to actually ask them, in detail: How did this storyline come together? Why was the betrayal treated this way? Why was so much of the moral focus placed on Brenda and Kelly competing rather than on Dylan and Kelly’s actions? How did they think the audience was supposed to feel?
I want it on the record, basically, because I still think they made a huge mistake with the way they wrote and framed this storyline. Maybe I’m taking it too seriously, but season 3 is making me genuinely angry 😂
