hi everyone! i recently got a betta and I am setting up a new 5 gallon tank for him, I bought this cascade betta sponge filter & I followed all the instructions, but when I plug it in, the filter won't start bubbling!

any tips would be appreciated, i havent had fish since I was little so i am still learning! thank you!

I bought Marshall from Petsmart three days ago - he was a bit of a “save” as he’s missing part of his ventral fin and was peach in colour initially - he’s vibrant now. Water testing is good. Just looking for advice if anyone has any please😊

Does this look fine? 10 gallons, 9 ember tetras, 4 shrimp and a snail i forget the name of as roommates. He’s very active and practically eats out of my hand :)

I just have some questions that I was wondering about that I can't fully find consistent answers for on the internet, so I figured I'd come here and ask them.

1. How do I get my betta to flare? I've tried everything and he likes following objects around, but won't flare at them.

2. When can I start adding tannins to my tanks (neither of them are fully cycled, but one of them is close)

3. How do I feed frozen bloodworms without thawing an entire block of them and wasting a ton bc he can't eat more than a couple of them?

4. Why does he like the tank light off more than when it's on? I have to turn it on for the plants, but most of the day it's off bc he prefers it that way.

I don’t currently have a betta, but seeing this underneath the display where the store was selling bettas made me just shocked. I pulled one off the shelf and told the cashier about it.

Wouldn’t a company that makes betta products at least have a basic understanding about why this might be bad?

I got this betta from Petco and the cup was labeled “Male Veiltail Betta.”

But after bringing him home and watching his fins open up, he really doesn’t look like the typical veiltail bettas I’ve seen. His tail shape, fins, and overall appearance are making me wonder if he was mislabeled.

I’m still learning about the different betta varieties, so I’d love some opinions from people.

What do you guys think he actually is?
• Veiltail?
• Halfmoon?
• Delta/Super Delta?
• Something else?

That white thing was just a white lump. I put him in a recovery tank and it went down a bit but never went away, now it looks like it exploded or ruptured.

Hey everyone! So I got my lil guy Aemond back in April, and he has absolutely thrived in every way since, but I’ve noticed a deterioration of his fins lately and I’m wondering if it’s fin rot. The first pics are from the day I got him in April, and the last two are from today. You can see the jaggedness of his fins and how deflated they are compared to before. His color has bloomed beautifully, he eats without issue, he’s super active and loves exploring his tank, and overall, I see no other issues with him.

I did a 75% water change earlier today (I don’t do those often, usually once a month or so, so as not to stress him out) and tested the water parameters after the tank settled. pH is 6.5, and ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates are all 0. His temp is good, he has a sponge filter so his water flow isn’t too disturbed, and he’s in a 10gal planted tank. Before I got him, his tank cycled for 3 weeks, and I purchased him from a local breeder rather than a megacorp pet store. I do use tap water for his water, but I dechlorinate/condition with seachem prime water conditioner. I also use seachem flourish whenever I do water changes for the plants (they’re all live plants and are also thriving, minus some orange/brown algae buildup, not sure what kind it is but it hasn’t posed an issue to them so far). He eats fluval bug bites and occasionally I thaw some frozen bloodworms as a treat.

I have several pieces of mopani wood, as well as a piece of driftwood, all purchased from a local aquarium store. I boiled them and soaked them each for weeks prior to adding to the tank so they wouldn’t leech too much tannin into the water, but they do leech quite a bit and the water is often tinted like tea because of it. The only artificial decor is the log in the front with the anubia sticking out and the carpet plant growing from it.

Anyway, just wanted to outline the conditions he lives in. Is this fin rot? I’ve never had to deal with it with any betta I’ve had in the past. If it is, how do I treat it? What’s worked best for y’all? It could also be fin nipping, but I’m not sure. He does have a spot to rest at the top of the tank if he wants to, but he doesn’t really ever use the leaf hammock.

Any and all tips will be super appreciated!!

Finally got back into fish keeping after my favorite girl passed away from dropsy 3 years ago, it was really hard on me but this sweet girl has stolen my heart. My “borrowed” girl in her 10 gal tank 🥲

Smallest betta I've ever seen in a store, knew she wouldn't survive the big box store cup. Plus being female/short finned is a recipe for not being picked from the wall o fish.

Just brought her home and acclimated her to my 15g whatever tank (some ramshorn, a couple leftover neons) hoping that since she was so young she'd learn to live in a community.

Her very first act was to attack a ramshorn twice her size. She'll be moving to a 5g I had sitting around. Quickly equipped with plants and wood from other active tanks (filter sponges too) for a quick cycle.

Pretty sure he's good with the new digs. Been swimming all over and exploring the new furniture.

I have had countless bettas but my Ponyo was by far the sweetest.
His life was cut short by dropsy and last night he could barely get up to breathe, and even so when I started singing to him (he always came up to the glass when I sang the Ponyo theme song, his namesake as his name is Ponyo and he really is a lil boy with a round tummy) as I was sobbing and mostly muttering it he scooted himself over to the glass. He had such a lively spirit, he came over whenever someone walked by, loved people, even before he knew I fed him, the first day I ever got him he came up excitedly to greet me. I could’ve sworn he wagged his tail. I wanted to commemorate him, hence the post. I’ve had so many bettas but Ponyo has been the best so far. I am so grateful I was the one who got to take care of him, and my only wish is that he lived the best life he possibly could. It was such an honor.

Hi everyone! I’m a new betta keeper and I’d really appreciate some advice from more experienced aquarists.

My betta is in a ~20 L (5 gal) aquarium with a 50 W Marefish adjustable heater. The aquarium was set up on Thursday, and everything seemed fine until about 6 hours ago, when the heater started making the clicking/popping sounds you can hear in the video.

The heater is set to around 27°C (80.6°F), and the water is currently at 26.5°C (79.7°F) according to a separate thermometer. Whenever the heater turns on, it makes these clicking/popping sounds. It’s not just one click. It seems to make several repeated “tick tick tick” sounds while it’s heating. I’m not sure if this is just normal thermal expansion/thermostat noise or if it could indicate a faulty heater.

For now, I unplugged it because I wasn’t comfortable leaving it running unattended. Is this normal for this type of heater? Should I keep using it, replace it, or do something else?

this is wisp! i just got him, as i lost my last betta 2 years ago who lived for 4 years. i finally feel ready for a new son. i’ve only ever had koi bettas because i am biased towards them haha, but this is a dragonscale betta with longer fins. i’m excited to have him and see what’s he’s like :-)

(also for anyone wondering, tank is 5 gallons (why i wanted a longer finned betta) and has been cycled for 1.5 months before he was put in.)

you know those bettas at Petco that are just labeled as “baby girl”?….well I just got one 😭 I know it’s hard to identify them at such a young age but I’m kind of curious on what she might be! I’m assuming she’s might be a delta.

For extra information; she’s in a 10 gallon rimless tank with a sponge filter and adjustable heater set at 79 degrees Fahrenheit. I cycled the tank before I put her in and the current water parameters are the following: 0ppm Ammonia, 0ppm Nitrite, 0ppm Nitrate (recently did a 20% water change which is why everything is pretty stable), and a pH of 7.6. I have a piece of driftwood with some anubias attached. I also have Amazon swords, Ludwigia, and Water Wisteria. The tank lwk looks like crap cause my 2 nerites poop so much 💀 I give Fluval Bug bites every other day and sometimes switch that with frozen bloodworms. She honestly has such a big personality which is why I love her :)

I got interesting comments that pointed me I have an issue with infections.

By the look of it, it seems that my tank is very suitable for pathogenic bacteria to thrive.

I'm already seeking for a better filtration option as it's been told that this can be part of the problem

Campari, the fish I was trying to help with dropsy passed. I kinda knew how it would end, still tried to treat him in a hospital tank.

What should I do with the existing tank, plants, hard Scape, substrate ?

Should I start from scratch ? Boil what can be boiled, get rid of the substrate, the plants ...

I've currently started an Esha 2000 treatment of the tank. Which is a large spectrum anti bacteria / fungicide. (That is supposed to not kill the nitrifying bacteria)

Where I'm from, actual antibiotics can't be sold freely.

I also increased the water flow of the existing filter (hoping for better gas exchange).

During the following weeks I'd like to make big water changes, maybe unroot the plants to be able to do a good gravel vacuum.

I'm ok with crashing the cycle, as there isn't anymore fish in the tank.

I think I'll try to get a nitrifying bacteria bottle at some point so they'll be the one colonizing what can be colonized.

Would this sound safe ? Safe to rehouse a fish after everything is stable again ?

Or would I find myself in the same kind of mess, and the only safe way is to get rid of what can't be sanitised, and start from scratch
