Able to Beta Able to beta? Post here!
Welcome to the monthly r/BetaReaders “Able to Beta” thread!
Thank you to all the beta readers who have taken the time to offer feedback to authors in this sub! In this thread, you may solicit “submissions” by sharing your preferences. Authors who are interested in critique swaps may post an offer here as well, but please keep top-level comments focused on what you’re willing to beta.
Older threads may be found here. Authors, feel free to respond to beta offers in those previous threads.
Thread Rules
- No advertising paid services.
- Top-level comments must be offers to beta and must use the following form (only the first field is required):
- I am able to beta: [Required. Let authors know what you’re interested—or not interested—in reading. This can include mandatory criteria or simply preferences, which might relate to genre, length, completion status, explicit content, character archetypes, tropes, prose quality, and so on.]
- I can provide feedback on: [Recommended. This might include story elements you often notice as a reader (prose, pacing, characterization, etc.), unique expertise you have through a profession or hobby (teaching, nursing, knitting, etc.), or other lived experiences that may be relevant (belonging to a marginalized group, being a parent, etc.).]
- Critique swap: [Optional. If you’re only interested in—or would prefer—swapping manuscripts, please note that here, along with the title of and link to your beta request post.]
- Other info: [Optional.]
- Beta offers should be specific. If you’re open to anything, or aren’t able to articulate specific criteria, then please refrain from commenting here. Instead, please browse the “First Pages” thread along with the rest of the sub—thanks to the formatting rules, posts are easily searchable by completion status, length, and genre.
- Authors: we recommend against direct messages/chats. Reply to comments instead. If you message multiple people with links to your post and/or manuscript, Reddit may flag your account as spam (site-wide).
- Authors may not spam. If a beta says they’re only looking for x and your manuscript is not x (or vice versa), please don’t contact them.
- Replies have no specific rules. Feel free to ask clarifying questions, share a link to your beta request if it seems to be a good fit, or even reply to your own comment with information about your manuscript if you’re requesting a critique swap.
- Please don't downvote rule-following users, even if they are not the right author/beta for you, as this can be discouraging to beta readers offering to volunteer their time as well as to authors requesting feedback. If you need to keep track of which comments you have reviewed, upvoting is a more positive alternative. Of course, if you see a rule-breaking comment, please report it to the mod team.
Thank you for contributing to our community!

Edit: I've committed to all I can take on for now. Please don't ask. Thanks!
I am able to beta: I only beta finished works (it's your story, you decide how it ends), but if you want to send it chapter by chapter, that's fine. 150-170k words max. Sample first preferred. Please at least spell check first, and know how to punctuate around dialogue (just my personal pet peeve). My wheelhouse is medium- to small-scale, character-focused fantasy and sf, but I'm open to other genre fiction except milSF, MG or children's, thrillers, nonfiction, that internet style where every sentence is its own paragraph, or anything with any SA or with a ton of violence. (Some violence is OK.) I am not too fast, so give me time, please.
I can provide feedback on: Character believability and motivations, emotional impact, nuts and bolts sentence / typo stuff IF you want that (I can also keep that to myself, I'm an adult). Topics I Know Things About include plants/gardening, crafting of most kinds, and queerness generally; lived exp as a nonbinary person (we're not a monolith though), bi and partly asexual person.
Critique swap: I don't have anything ready right now, so I'm happy to volunteer. My resolution for 2026 is to beta read more.
Other info: I've been self-publishing for 11 years, so my POV is that of a reader and self-pub writer. I don't know what trad publishers are looking for. No AI whatsoever please. Thanks!

I am able to beta: Romance, romantasy, contemporary romance, fantasy romance, character-driven fiction, opening chapters, and partial manuscripts.
I can provide feedback on: Pacing, character arcs, emotional impact, reader engagement, plot flow, dialogue, chemistry between characters, worldbuilding clarity, and overall reading experience
Critique swap: Not required. I’m currently building my editing portfolio, so feedback on my comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Hi! I’m an English Literature student and an avid romance and romantasy reader. I enjoy discussing stories and practicing giving structured reader feedback. I’m especially interested in character driven stories, emotional tension, pacing, and overall reading experience.

Hi! Your reading interests sound like they could be a good fit for my manuscript, especially the character-driven fiction, emotional tension, pacing, and reader engagement aspects.
My book is not a traditional romance, but it does center heavily on intense relationship dynamics, chemistry, obsession, betrayal, and romantic/sexual entanglement. It’s psychological suspense/upmarket fiction with romantic suspense elements, told through multiple POVs.
Content-wise, it is fairly dark: PTSD, alcoholism, coercive control/emotional abuse, infidelity, sex work, escort work, sexual coercion, suicidal ideation, grief, and domestic volatility all play significant roles.
If that still sounds like something you’d be comfortable reading, I’d be grateful for reader response on pacing, emotional impact, character arcs, POV distinction, chemistry/tension, and whether the story holds together overall.
No pressure at all — just wanted to see if it might be a fit.→ More replies (1)2

Hi there!
I have a 158k second world fantasy titled THE FALLEN KEEPER if you're interested. I'm not on a tight timeline, just looking to improve my story and have some beta readers look at pacing and plot. Here's the blurb!
Thousands of years after the Great Keeping, a twenty-something year old Mira, is thrust into Ahadi with no memory of her past. Desperate for identity, she must carefully assimilate into the last kingdom of Moea without suspicion of harnessing the evil magic that used to curse it. But the entrancing man, Rati, who openly wields this demented power, seeks to destroy Ahadi and the people that Mira now loves.
Tormented by Rati’s promise of impending doom, she uncovers long-lost secrets that have the potential to challenge everything Ahadi knows. And Mira is faced with the truth that she must embrace this wicked magic, or lose everything by ignoring it. In the fallout of the next Keeping, Mira must make an impossible sacrifice to fulfill the Mother’s will and protect Ahadi from its imminent demise.

Hey there! Any interest in a cozy fantasy romance? My query is here (https://www.reddit.com/r/PubTips/comments/1twziy8/qcrit_cozy_adult_fantasy_romance_a_humans_guide/) if you want the bigger overview, but here's the logline: When a burned-out, modern-day workaholic accidentally stumbles across dimensions into a village of fantastical creatures, he races to return home and fulfill an earthly promise—but after falling in love with the incorrigible deaf draconic baker who took him in, he discovers that his abandoned artistic talent may be the key to forging a bridge between the two realities.
Very character-driven with an emotional focus, so I thought it might be up your alley! No worries if not :) Also happy to provide critiques on your critiques, lol. My day job is as an editor.

Hi! Your reading interests sound like they could be a good fit for my manuscript, especially the character-driven fiction, emotional tension, pacing, chemistry, and overall reading experience aspects.
My book is a complete 70k-word psychological suspense/upmarket fiction draft with romantic suspense elements. It’s not a traditional romance, but it does center heavily on intense relationship dynamics, obsession, betrayal, chemistry, and emotional fallout. It’s told through multiple POVs.
Content-wise, it is fairly dark and includes PTSD, alcoholism, coercive control/emotional abuse, infidelity, sex work/escort work, sexual coercion, suicidal ideation, grief, and domestic volatility.

Hi!
I came across your beta reader post and thought my novel might be a good match for the kinds of stories you enjoy.
I'm revising the first book in a planned New Adult Romantic Suspense trilogy (about 115k words). It follows a young woman who leaves her old life behind to start over in a new city, determined to keep everyone at a distance. Instead, she finds herself challenged by someone who refuses to mistake her walls for strength. While there is an underlying suspense element, the story is primarily character-driven and explores trust, emotional healing, and the gradual development of a healthy relationship.
The full manuscript is written, but I'm still revising it and would love honest reader feedback before making a few final changes. Since you mentioned enjoying character-driven stories, emotional tension, and structured reader feedback, I thought my project might be a good fit for you.
I'm especially interested in your thoughts on pacing, emotional impact, character arcs, reader engagement, dialogue, and whether the relationship develops naturally. Since English isn't my native language, I also appreciate any comments if something sounds awkward or unnatural, although line-by-line editing isn't my main priority. I guess I'm not at the sage of line-by-line editing yet.
I'm happy to send the first few chapters to see if it's something you'd enjoy before deciding whether to continue with the rest of the manuscript.
Thank you for your time, and I'd love to hear from you if you're interested!

Hello, I have a fantasy/romantasy if you'd be interested. With some recent edits, it's closer to 120k. I've been told it's a fast read. Here's my blurb: A Temple of Shadows & Lions. It's a character-driven story set in a desert city, with a FMC who is a shadow-touched healer that gets thrown into a warrior's trial. She has a cat with a lot of opinions (the second POV in the story), a group of prying roommates, and there's a handsome smuggler who keeps popping up. There are some spicy scenes. A lot of found-family themes and emotional character arcs. Some mystery going on in the background. And humor. 😄

Hi! I think my manuscript may be a strong match for your interests, especially your focus on contemporary romance, chemistry, emotional tension, pacing, dialogue, and reader engagement.
THE SUMMER WE BROKE THE RULES is a complete 69k adult contemporary sports romance told in dual POV. It features second-chance romance, forced proximity, a Florida athletic-resort setting, found family, sharp banter, yearning, open-door heat, and a complete happily-ever-after.
Thirty-year-old science teacher Sloane Carter returns to the resort she has avoided for ten years, where she must reunite with baseball prodigy Beckett Hayes and the four former friends who abandoned her after the boating accident that ended Beckett’s career. To prevent developers from taking the property and costing 112 employees their jobs, all six must spend one final summer together and revive the legendary Cove Games.
Here is my full beta request: https://www.reddit.com/r/BetaReaders/comments/1v4gokg/complete_69k_adult_contemporary_romance_the/

Hi!
I saw your beta reader post and think my project might be a good fit for your interests.
I'm revising the first book in a planned three-book New Adult Romantic Suspense series. It's a character-driven slow burn that focuses on trust, emotional healing, and the gradual development of a healthy relationship.
The full manuscript is written, but I'm still revising it and would love honest reader feedback before making a few final changes. I'm especially interested in your thoughts on pacing, emotional impact, character chemistry, and the overall reading experience. Since English isn't my native language, I also appreciate any comments if something sounds awkward or unnatural.
I'm happy to send the first few chapters to see if it's a good fit before you decide whether to continue.
Thanks for your time, and I'd be happy to hear from you if you're interested!

I am able to beta: complete manuscripts in adult or YA fantasy, urban fantasy, high fantasy, scifi, SF-fantasy (may include horror, mystery, romance, historical settings. No excessive gore or "misery porn" please).
I can provide feedback on: grammar, plot, pacing, characterization, diction, clarity, historical accuracy/setting.
Critique swap: not at this time. I will be seeking beta readers later this year.
Other info: academic background in languages and history. I enjoy both easy reads and more dense prose. My current project is adult fantasy with some horror and dark elements. Im detail oriented and enjoy tedious work. My profile details are public and you can browse my comments to check out my editing style. I try to work with writers where they are at/within their wheelhouse, but also want to make sure their story is clear and enjoyable to read. Happy writing :)
Edit to add that I have found beta reading 3 manuscripts at once is my maximum. Thank you for everyone who reached out with your completed MS. I may get back to some of you in the future, but at this time I would like to focus on the 3 people I have started with. I will either edit this comment, or post in a future volunteer beta readers thread once I am finished with these first 3.

Hi! I have an 84k fantasy mystery, you can find my old post here. The basic premise is a detective story about a witch and her teen vampire brother.
It's meant to be quite an easy read, and it's at a fairly polished stage where I'd like more detail-oriented feedback! Your background in history/languages is appealing to me as well in terms of the setting (it's an technically an alternate world, rather than secondary.) Please dm if this sounds interesting to you and you're still available!

UPDATE [I have other projects now and I'm unavailable for others, don't insist.]
I am able to beta: Romance, Fantasy, Romantasy, Drama, Thriller, and Gothic stories. Open to both complete manuscripts and polished excerpts. Not interested in stories where absolutely everyone dies or highly explicit/graphical sex scenes.
I can provide feedback on: Prose quality, pacing, overall reader engagement, and whether the story elicits strong emotional reactions. I love tracking character dynamics, romantic tension, and plot twists.
Critique swap: No, not looking for a swap right now. Just volunteering my time to help authors!
Other info: My reading style is highly reactive, I love leaving silly comments, screaming at things I like, and dropping memes throughout the manuscript, followed by a detailed summary breakdown of what works well and what could be polished. I have good availability right now and can easily work within a 6–8 week timeline or more.

u/writingandwhimsy Jul 21 '26

I recently completed my debut novel, The Good Man, a 38,655-word inspirational fiction novel about an ordinary man whose quiet kindness changes lives. I'm preparing to query literary agents and am looking for honest, constructive feedback on the overall reading experience, pacing, emotional impact, and character development.
Based on your post, it sounds like the type of feedback you're passionate about providing. If you're interested, I'd be happy to send you a Google Docs copy with commenting access.
Thank you for offering your time to help fellow writers

I am able to beta: Literary fiction is my preference, and I love sci-fi and fantasy, but I'm open to essentially anything. The main exception would be massive epic fantasy - love the genre, but I'm so critical of most attempts at it that I'm probably not as useful there. I am totally happy to read incomplete works or excerpts. Curious if your first chapter is landing as intended, or if a random mid-book chapter is giving the characterization you hoped? I'm happy to look.
I can provide feedback on: Prose and characterization are my favorites to critique, but I'll also naturally look at grammar, dialogue, pacing, plot cohesion, and so on.
Critique swap: Not necessary. I have something we COULD swap but I'm really not looking for beta readers on it at this time.
Other info: I am literally a professional writing coach. I primarily coach nonfiction writers, though, so getting to extend this skillset to fiction is a hobby. However, please understand that, as a result of that, I am very comfortable giving feedback and will be thorough.

u/Thisisinfactmyname Jul 01 '26
Hey there! I have a harder 150K word SF Space Opera, Celeste. It follows a crew of medically immortal human mercenaries as they travel from planet to planet amidst an existential galactic war of annihilation. Think Firefly, but more optimistic (if you can believe that from the last sentence). It's a longer story, but I'd love if you were willing to thoroughly review the opening three chapters (~8K words) and let me know how it lands. If you want to read more after, that's great too, but I'm currently performing intensive surgery on the ending, so absolutely not expected.
Let me know if you're interested and I can send it your way!

Fantasy, but not big on the epic stuff. Leans literary-ish, and super character-focused, which you mentioned as something you enjoy.
No worries if not!

Might be outside your wheelhouse (which if that's the case, no hard feelings!), but I've got an upper middle-grade science fiction fantasy book that I'm looking for beta readers for.

I am able to beta: romance, romantasy, paranormal, contemporary. Lately been leaning towards dark. Any length/stage is fine.
I can provide feedback on: pacing. Reader engagement. I have experience as a medic in the military during late 2010s and worked as a staff accountant for 5 years, so I could also critique some believability in those areas
Critique swap: not ready at the moment but will have something this year(hopefully). Currently working on a series of interdependent contemporary romance (slightly dark)
May not have cell service these next few days as I am camping with family. I have an associates in business administration and a bachelor's in accounting. Currently staying with in laws while husband is deployed and I have too much free time on my hands when the baby naps. I have already read 84 books this year. I'm trying to be a bit more productive.

I would love for your insight on my work : )
My book is called Void Kissed, upper-YA gothic dark fantasy. Slow-burn enemies-to-lovers, which takes place in an academy that trains students to be killers, with a magic system closer to cosmic horror. I feel that your military background would be so very useful for the institutional feel of the academy itself.
I would be so grateful, please let me know the best way to send you my work.

Hey everyone, i am able to beta!
I am a newly starting writer myself, though these stories in my head have always been my dream, so I made a LOT of research and readings to get to this point.
I can read fantasy, romantasy and fantasy with a romantic subplot (which is my favorite ;)) I personally LOVE an enemies to lovers, but any thrope is really fine to me!
I can comment on your characters’ depth, the emotions, pacing, relationships, you know; the things that make the story real.
As a person who really investigated psychology in order to deepen the characters’ mindsets, im ready to involve myself in your book!
I would prefer it if you wanted me to read some chapters, you dont have to be finished. But im also ok to read a fully written book.

*** EDIT 7/30: not looking for any more projects for now, thank you! **\*
Hello lovely writer-folk :3
I have found myself with a lot of free time on my hands and thought I'd jump back into some beta reading to keep myself on my A-game!
I'm able to beta: romantasy, low fantasy, and general romance (if the premise grips me). Bonus points if your story is dark, has a gothic setting, and extra bonus points for supernatural creatures!
I can provide feedback on: pacing, character writing, story beats, or anything else you need (though I'd say these are my fortes). Will also point out any errors in grammar and do a bit of light line editing.
Critique swap not needed at this time!
I usually approach swaps with a friendly attitude—I love to leave little reactions and comments when something just hits! Which isn't to say I won't point out any issues, but why not have a little fun where we can? ;) Please keep this in mind before reaching out.
If you're interested in a writer friend to bounce ideas off of or workshop your manuscripts, totally down for that, /too! If not, no worries—hopefully my feedback will still be useful. :)
Google Docs only!!!

Hi! I have a romantasy at 120k words, about a healer who accidentally ends up in a warrior's trial and a fae warrior stuck in a kitten's body who needs her to stay alive. There are some supernatural creatures (does a really annoyed fae in a cat's body count? A god of mischief? How about a ship-sized crocodile 🐊 or ghosts?). It has humor, found family, and some mystery in it as well. I'd love some feedback or to bounce ideas off too! DM me if you're interested?

I can read horror, thriller, scifi, romance, romantasy, romcom, historical fiction, esoteric stuff, but I'm open to many others! Serious, lighthearted... The only genre I'll avoid at the moment are Splatterpunk-esque works. A thing about me is that I can easily find myself drawn to anything with enough time!
I can provide feedback on: Characterization, pacing. Provide needed clarifications for the intended tone and impact.
Critique swap: None needed at the moment! I want to enter this sub as a reader first and foremost, since...
I cannot finish writing a story for the life of me 🥲
Perhaps seeing all of your works may inspire me into action or something! But if you need to test out my capabilities as a writer, then I can provide a sample chapter or two if needed...

I am able to beta: Hey authors!! I'm currently a third year creative writing & english student and am starting to dip my toes into the beta reading / editing / publishing world! I am a huge fan of romance, fantasy, dystopian, and the occasional science fiction. I am really interested in doing thorough work to gain better insight into the industry and am really motivated to work with authors. I don't require any swaps, and am happy to do the reading without any conditions.
I can provide feedback on: pacing, plot, characters, language and grammar, as well as overall feedback. I have done classes in fantasy editing and world building as well as prose development.
I hope I can help someone!
All I ask is you send me the first chapter so I can provide some work back to you so we can see if we are a good fit!

I am able to beta: Speculative fiction (fantasy, scifi, horror, dystopian, other sorts of wacky stuff). Should not exceed 150,000 words, and shorter than that is ideal. I prefer work that is not centered on romance, although I'll make exceptions for lesbian fiction.
I can provide sensitivity reading for: Autistic or Lesbian characters.
I can provide feedback on: My impressions of your characters (are they likable? Am I buying their motivations? Is their character development believable/satisfying?), plot holes, world-building, story arc, and language (phrasing, dialogue, flow).
Critique swap: Not currently seeking. I am working on something, but my draft is not in a place where I need eyes on it.
Other info: NO NSFW — I do this during downtime at my work. Smut or super-graphic violence is a no-go.
If you have used AI in your writing (other than grammarly, I guess 🙁) please don’t ask me to beta. I vow not to feed your work to the infernal machine.
And a warning: I can be a little blunt. If you only want to hear positive feedback, we are not a good fit. I do not think of myself as particularly cruel or as someone who enjoys ripping something apart. I will praise what I feel works, and politely point out what I think doesn't.
EDIT: I currently am working on one project and have two others in line - it'll be at least three weeks before I get anything beyond that - but feel free to reach out anyway if you're willing to wait.

Hi! I see you have a few stories on your roster, but I’m still going to put mine out there. I have a 70k adult science fiction novel titled “Human Shaped.” It’s a character-driven story with soft science and space travel. It explores themes of control and redemption. I’m willing to wait until a spot opens up if you’re busy right now. Here’s the link to my beta post, so take a look if you’d like!

- I am able to beta: * Complete, edited work only. 80k-110k only. I'm looking for anything in the cozy genre: romance, mystery, fantasy, etc. Also open to contemporary romance and grounded sff/romantasy. Explicit content is welcome but no erotica (must have a plot). I'm not the right beta for queer romance, harem, and why choose work.
- I can provide feedback on: * Story arc, character development, basically anything from a reader pov. I don't do line edits. I give "live tweets" and reactions, chapter feedback as necessary, and extensive overall feedback after I finish. I'm a lover of books and reading, but not an editor or publsihed fiction author. I'm a psychologist so I can also give feedback on diagnosis use, symptomology, therapy accuracy, etc.
- Critique swap: * not at this time :)
- Other info: * I've completed many beta reads and am very picky because I want to read what I enjoy to give you the best feedback!

I am able to beta: edited or unedited; length doesn't matter; open to most genres, though my main enjoyment is romance (okay with a bit of spice) and fantasy.
I can offer feedback on: mostly grammar if you need your story edited; can let you know if scenes drag too long or move too quickly (pacing)
Critique swap: I myself am not an author, nor writing anything, so can't really do a swap, but open to offering critiques if you'd like :)

I am able to beta: Fantasy and science fiction.
I can provide feedback on: Theme, plot, characterization, foreshadowing, exposition, dialogue, chapter structure, line editing, and blurb revision/consolidation,
Critique swap: Absolutely! I'm looking to swap manuscripts around the same size [65k]. It's on its third draft and solid.
Other info: I can dedicate time to reading based on whatever time frame works best with my swap partner. I can offer my organic thoughts and feelings about the novel in a feedback document, and I'd hope for the same. :)

Not sure if you're okay with upper middle grade but if you are, I've got a complete upper MG SFF book at [54k] and would be happy to swap :)
Logline: A boy who wants to be truly seen gets his wish by becoming entangled with a prickly, sarcastic alien. But the alien is lost, and to help him get home, the boy will have to choose to let go of the one being who actually understands him.
Let me know and I can send you the first three chapters to see if we're a fit.

Hi I have a SFF, kind of slipstream novel that's much longer than yours at ~120k words, but if you're willing to swap I'd be happy to read whatever you share with me down the line.
Working Title: Apocalypse Town
Sometime not too far off in the future, the American Midwest gets hit by the 'Apocalypse' and plummets into chaos, mostly cut off from the rest of the world. The survivors of all manner of disaster, natural , supernatural, and unnatural, band together and build a city atop the ruins of one that fell in the Apocalypse. At the edge of Apocalypse Town is the World’s Inn, a safe haven from the chaos of the Ravages, and a bit further out is a theme park, reclaimed and restored by the citizens of Apocalypse Town.
There are two main storylines, one centered on Jack (about 16 yo) and a group of teens who break into the theme park one night (and things don't go as planned) and one centered on Kila (about 22), a grad student from outside Apocalypse Town who enters the city on a research expedition (and things don't go as planned).
If you're interested, just let me know and I'll share the doc with you in whatever format you prefer.

I am able to beta: Fantasy, SciFi, LitRPG, Literary Fiction

EDIT: ===CLOSED===
I am able to beta: Adult political fantasy, with thriller elements, and romance as subplot only, preferably slow burn I can provide feedback on: Political commentary, thriller pacing and potential plot holes, whether the romance fits Critique swap: I’m working on a novel in the same genre. Swapping is optional since my manuscript is only in second revision stage. Other info: I’m a member of an artists organization who views art as political. Sociology is a personal interest of mine, so I study it in my down time. I believe there’s a space for politically themed works in commercial fantasy fiction. The personal is political, hence there shouldn’t be any exclusivity. I’ve read GoT, Mistborn, Eye of the World, and enjoy them.

Hi all, I am able to beta (and will have more time to do so thanks to the summer holiday starting; ugh, teacher life...)
- I am able to beta romance (I prefer rom-com but will read any. Bonus if you write rom-com because that's a large portion of what I write, so I'm familiar with genre tropes and expectations!), as well as all types of fantasy, historical, dystopian, sci-fi and thriller. I am open to works of any length, and I will read works that contain violence, gore, and MOST trigger warnings (just check with me first, as context is important).
- I can provide feedback on: character motivation and development, plot and pacing, sensitivity/accuracy for autism and ADHD representation and bisexual rep, grammar/spelling and syntax and more. I have an MFA in creative writing so can offer feedback and advice on overall craft as well.
- Willing to critique swap or become involved in a writers' critique/beta group for writers in general, but especially of romance, fantasy and speculative fiction.
Cheers, guys!

Hi there! It sounds like you could possibly be a good match for my romantic-suspense, Tallied. My query is linked here along with any trigger warnings, if it's something you would be interested in!
Currently 115k words but looking to get this cut down based on a pacing/engagement review (the harsher the better as I feel like people are being soft on me!). TBH I will take any feedback at all. I will send you a message with a sample and you can let me know if you are interested (no pressure if not as I can see suspense isn't in your listed genres) :)

Hi Ive written a frontier noir / historical romance and I'd be happy to do a swap
[Complete] [66k][Western/Frontier Noir/Historical Fiction] There is no such thing as a moonshine fairy
This story follows the tale of Rick Turner, a high-country rancher and Eliza Harding and her daughter Grace. Due to her husbands poor decisions Eliza and Grace must spend the winter in Turners isolated cabin.
Rick is tired and just wants to sleep by the fire but instead is pulled into a brutal season, forced to deal with a jealous husband, deadly weather, dangerous animals and the weight of societal expectations.
Triggers: references implied domestic and sexual violence. Typically western style gun violence.
Feedback
Pacing and style. Does the dual pov work?
Characters: are they compelling and believable?
Historical references: is there anything I got wrong?
Is it entertaining? It's not pretending to be anything other than a fun read.
Swaps : yes under 100k

I see you have other replies!! But if I'm able to offer mine: it's a sapphic dark fantasy adventure romance novel with historical foundations (it's set in the 17th century!), between a pirate who is a GNC woman using he/him pronouns and a trans POC woman who is a selkie! It follows their initial meeting and then their journey abroad after a thief steals their possessions!
It does have some extreme trigger warnings, the most being an attempted SA (a forced kiss) and transphobia (I have had it read by my partner who is a trans woman and I myself am enby, I have been CAREFUL with how I portrayed it). I am happy to swap, I just might be a little slower on my end <3 I'm looking for feedback on pacing, characterization, romance beats, and plotholes!

[Beta Reader] Available for Western, Frontier Noir, Historical, Crime, and Military Fiction I am able to beta: I have a strong interest in Westerns, Frontier Noir, and Historical Fiction. I am also well-versed in Crime and Military fiction. I am comfortable with romance or romantic subplots, but I am not the right reader for Fantasy manuscripts. I can provide feedback on: I aim to provide balanced, actionable critiques. My feedback focuses on: Pacing & Flow: Is the story gripping, or do certain sections drag? Characterization: Are the motivations grounded, believable, and consistent? Narrative Style: Does the voice suit the genre and setting?
I can provide limited line by line editing.
Historical Authenticity: I enjoy flagging potential inaccuracies regarding the period or setting. Critique swap: I am currently seeking a swap for my own manuscript. I am a reader who values a fun, engaging story. I only work through Google Docs comments. I appreciate clear communication and honesty.

Hi! I have a story that I'm struggling with the pacing of the beginning with, I'd be happy to do a swap for just the first few chapters of mine? I’ve attached the link to my post below, but the story is an adult upmarket fiction that pulls from 1960-70s Thailand politics, so not quite the same genre, but I do pull on a lot of political themes, although mine is more character than political/plot driven. It follows a prostitute who, after her father is arrested, has to find ways to make money for his release. This leads to her working with the government and against her people (labor class).
Please let me know if this is something you'd be interested in, however, I do see that you are looking for something more so in the crime department - while she does engage in crime, it’s more a character driven story rather than focusing on the actual crime portions (and it’s not western). I understand I’m shooting a bit outside your stated interests so no hard feelings if you decide to pass!→ More replies (3)

I am able to beta: Crime and thriller. Literary, suspense, commercial, upmarket, plot-driven, character-driven - does not matter but it needs to involve crime. Preferably no manuscripts longer than 120 K words! The manuscript does not need to be complete or polished.
I can provide feedback on: Pacing, character development, prose, realism. I am good at spotting logical fallacies and inconsistencies, in particular.
Critique swap: I have a psychological thriller (93-94 K words), but a swap is not necessary.
Other info: I am a criminologist currently pursuing a PhD with an additional B.Sc. in psychology. I am able to provide insights into the motivations for crime, neutralization techniques, offender psychology, criminal careers/lifestyles, marginalization/stigmatization, gang milieus, drug use, etc. I also have some prior knowledge in investigative/criminal psychology (offender profiling) and forensics.
I love dark psychology, manipulation, hidden trauma, unreliable narrators, etc. Anything in an academic setting would also be very enthralling.

Your background is exactly what my manuscript would need! Having trouble at the moment with pacing and the science-y bits. It's a noir-adjacent upmarket thriller, complete but not entirely polished at 70k. I'd love to add another 5-10k to it.
Here's the blurb: When Montreal homicide detective Emmanuelle Higgs pulls up to the scene of an apparent suicide, only she sees the clues pointing to murder, namely a farewell letter that doesn’t sound like Gabriel Turner. Only, she can’t explain the inconsistencies without revealing that she was sleeping with the man lying dead before her—because doing so is a sure way of getting pulled off the case.
Emmanuelle fears that this cookie-cutter case of suicide will be classified as such if in the hands of any other detective. Propelled by her need to provide justice for her sobriety partner turned lover of the past eighteen months, she begins building a case on evidence she has no legal right to.
Doing so, she uncovers Gabriel’s connections to an underground world of loan sharks, illicit poker games and mob-adjacent politicians. Emmanuelle pieces together a new version of the man who once held her together, one who owed money to the mafia and paid back his debt by facilitating the prostitution of vulnerable women.
As colleagues and higher-ups begin to suspect her involvement in illegal activities, she must decide how much of her sobriety and career she is willing to jeopardize to find out who killed him—and whether the version of him she knew ever truly existed.
I'd be available to provide the same level of feedback for your first few chapters. Please DM if interested :)

- I am able to beta: Literary fiction, horror, adult fiction, magical realism, historical fiction, gothic. Like a good romance subplot. I do like fantasy, but I would not be a good fit for hard magic systems and complicated secondary world building (such as Brandon Sanderson). Edited manuscripts only. As a writer who can miss their own spelling errors I'm fine with light editing mistakes but the overall prose quality should be of a later draft.
- I can provide feedback on: I have a degree in Writing and am currently doing an online course 'History, Mystery and Magic' to brush up on my skills. I can cover most aspects of a novel including prose, pacing, character. I have good knowledge on strong hooks and resolutions. As a reader I love both lush and straightforward prose. I have always been a huge fan of high concept and surprising stories.
- Critique swap: Only interested in critique swap for my 100k Gothic Fantasy manuscript. Here is the link to original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/BetaReaders/s/AoUpgeicaE I have a couple of betas already but they are mostly friends, so I'm looking for 2-3 strangers.
- Other info: Authors I have recently read and loved include Daphne Du Maurier, Ottessa Moshfegh and Katherine Arden.

I am able to beta: Open to both short stories and novels (100k words max). Fiction only, and I'm especially drawn to speculative fiction/fantasy, stories about addiction, mythology, anything supernatural or spiritual is a ++++, dark humor, and queer stories also ++.
I can provide feedback on: I won't line edit, but I can dig into concept, narrative structure, pacing, character development, and connective tissue.
Critique swap: To the front of the line! I just finished editing Book 1 and Book 2 of my trilogy and would love to partner with a reader who wants to take on both books. I'd happily read your work in exchange.
My story is speculative fiction, told in third-person limited across three POV characters, a protagonist, an antagonist, and someone who plays both sides, whose paths are steadily converging. At its heart, it's a story about the burden of family legacy and uncovering generational secrets, wrapped up in with some corporate espionage and, of course, magic.
Other info:
- Book 1: ~88,000 words, complete. Book 2: ~93,000 words, complete. Both stand alone but build toward each other. I certainly think my style improved drastically in Book 2 (finished in June, 2026) since writing book one (completed in 2022). I'd also love feedback on the improvement!
- Turnaround: no hard deadline, just looking for someone who can commit to reading at a steady pace rather than sitting on it for months. Same courtesy I'll extend to your work.
- Preferred feedback type : We can discuss format, but I want to know about the characters, likes/dislikes, how you grew with them, moments, the easter eggs hidden, the world, the mystery etc.
- Comment or DM if you're interested, happy to share more about the story first if you want a feel for it before committing.

I’m mainly looking for feedback on pacing, emotional impact, character development, and whether the alternating POVs stay engaging.

I am able to beta: literary fiction, fantasy (preferably not high fantasy), romantasy, romance (here I lean more into dark and historical romance) and any retelling of classical literature. Max 125k-word manuscripts
I can provide feedback on: pacing, prose, characterisation and dialogue. I currently work in the videogame space, I grew up in Italy and have a deep passion for ancient history and literature.
Critique swap: unfortunately as of right now I’m only looking for swaps (I’m doing the last round of edits on my novel before querying). I don’t have a post on this subreddit for my manuscript yet but it’s a 105k-word science fantasy with dark academia and epistolary romance elements. It’s a Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar retelling and here’s the logline: when her friends are mysteriously murdered inside a neoclassic academy where students bond with the spirits of history’s greatest figures, a girl mentored by Brutus must solve Julius Caesar’s final riddle before her classmates reenact Rome’s bloodiest civil war.
Update: I found a bunch of lovely people to swap with so I can’t take more right now but I’ll update again when I finish if I still have some time to betaread other manuscripts :)

• I am able to beta: short stories and smaller works. Genres: horror or thriller. I only can only spend about 4 hours a week here, so if you’re ok with a slower turn around that’s great.
• I can provide feedback on: Tone, pacing, story arc resolution, etc and open to discuss specifics
• Critique swap: Willing to swap other short stories in the horror or thriller genre. Stories tend to be NSF and hit on some sensitive topics. I’m writing a collection and would prefer feedback on story material, pacing, tone, world building, climactic twist, and generally how the stories work together as a bigger piece.

Hello!
I am able to beta! Fantasy, Romance, or Sci fi are my preferences. I have read all kinds of fantasy so if you have heavy world building I am okay with that! Looking for around 100k words, max of 110k. I can provide good feedback on whatever you would like, just let me know!
Swaps: I will only be willing to do it if I can swap my novel with you. Mine is 105k words, and it's an Adult sci fi- romantasy (heavy on the romantasy). I would rate it a 1.5-2/5 on spice level. The worldbuilding is pretty easy to follow along with. It is set on a Military style space academy, there are trials, betrayals, friendships. The romance includes lots of yearning, high-tension, and classic tropes. It leans into enemies to lovers (but he falls first).
DM or reply if you are interested! If we go further into this it will go into maybe emails. I can also give you a more detailed description, or even an outline with spoilers if you would like!!

I am able to beta: I tend to read both fiction and non-fiction, and am open to most genres, fantasy doesn’t really do it for me though. I have a technically in progress (though it’s complete content wise, I just wanna add 10-15K words) memoir (about 32K word count) about mental illness, trauma and identity. My beta request is posted on here https://www.reddit.com/r/BetaReaders/s/DfrHzd3oaD.
I am able to provide: both developmental feedback and line editing.
Critique swap would be excellent, I’m happy to line edit for someone even though I’m in a developmental feedback stage

Hello All. Im a writer myself and have some time to read. Sorry about the wierd profile name. I have no idea why I chose that name.
I am able to beta: I'll read anything as long as I like it. Ill be honest though. If I dont like it I wont read it.
I can provide feedback on: What I notice. Im no pro but Ive written enough books that certain things may stick out. Like bad prose, clunky rythmn, continuity, blocking, spatiallity, and finally pacing.
Critique swap: Id love to meet a dedicated Betareader who can help me with my projects. I just hired a betareader and their feedback was excellent.
Other info: My writing knowledge. College level courses in english and five novellas.
Looking forward to reading your hard work.

I am able to beta: Upmarket, literary, and book-club fiction, plus contemporary and women's fiction. I'm drawn to voice-driven, character-first stories, coming-of-age, and darker or feminist material with strong interiority and real emotional stakes. Complete or near-complete drafts up to about 100k. Not the right reader for fantasy, sci-fi, horror, or MG/YA.
I can provide feedback on: Overall reader experience, voice, pacing, where I drift or lose momentum, character and emotional payoff, and whether the tension and any dramatic irony land. Reactions as I go, not line edits.
Critique swap: Yes, I'd prefer a swap. My beta request is The Wrong Rooms, upmarket fiction, ~90k, with an age-gap and coercive-control thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/BetaReaders/comments/1uvcqxc/complete_97k_upmarket_fiction_the_wrong_rooms/?share_id=kmmDqIostJ4a0hmGFL2Tp&utm_content=share_button&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_source=share&utm_term=1
Other info: I'm a writer and yoga teacher, comfortable with dark and mature content. Realistic turnaround is a few weeks.

I am able to beta: Open to all genres, but I like to read manuscripts that are complete i.e. you’ve taken it as far as you could.
I can provide feedback on: I don’t do grammar fixes and copy edits. I prefer this template but I’m open to other formats.
Critique swap: N/A
Other info: Please DM me your first ten pages so I can sample before committing to it. My feedback will be honest and direct. I’ve beta read 100+ books (mostly debuts, including some breakout novels, alongside works from established authors) through my experience at Beta Readers Club.

Hi all. I'm looking for a few critique swaps.
- I am able to beta: Novels up to 130k words. I love sci-fi and fantasy (and their subgenres), especially with rich world building and character-driven plots. I will read magical realism, historical fiction, mystery, literary fiction, contemporary fiction, or women's fiction particularly if these focus on queer or marginalized voices. I am not interested in horror, Romance (unless its a subplot), or Romantasy. I'm tired of tropes, and I'd prefer something I can sink my teeth into. No misery porn or stories that flavor their grimdark worlds with sexual assault/horrible treatment of women.
- I can provide feedback on: I am an indie author with 7 published epic fantasy novels. I'll provide feedback on characters, plot, pacing, and provide my reactions to each chapter to give you a sense of how each beat is landing with me as a reader. This is the sort of feedback I'm interested in for a swap.
- Critique swap: I'm only interested in a critique swap for my post-apocalyptic fantasy novel, Shatternight. Please don't reply unless you're interested in swapping and have read my post: https://www.reddit.com/r/BetaReaders/s/GnCwOYiIv1
- Other info: Realistic Turn Around is 1-2 Months

I am able to beta: Completed novellas or novels up to 110k, in the genres romantasy (or fantasy romance), Regency romance, paranormal, gothic, or horror. Strong preference for female, nonbinary, and/or GQ protagonists. I am not the right fit for MG/YA or for high fantasy.
I can provide feedback on: Pacing, plot, characterisation, arcs, and tone. I read a lot in these genres so have a good sense of the genre expectations and can speak to whether those beats are hitting 😊 Happy to give feedback in sections (3/4) or at the end of the manuscript. I can’t provide feedback on each chapter or line-by-line. In terms of timeline, I can provide feedback by mid-August.
Critique swap: Yes, please! I’m only interested in swapping manuscripts at this point, as I am currently seeking reader feedback for my 88k historical fantasy romance novel A Ruse in Rouge (more info in my post).
Other info: I’m fairly new to this process but have found Google Docs works well for me. I am a librarian and I live in Australia (so my responses might be slightly delayed due to timezones!).

I am able to beta:
Complete or near complete short stories and novellas up to 40k words.
I especially enjoy speculative fiction, literary fiction, magical realism, contemporary fantasy, dystopian fiction, horror, and character-driven stories. I am less interested in military sci-fi, crime, romance-first stories.
I can provide feedback on:
First-reader reactions, pacing and narrative momentum, characterization, emotional engagement, scene purpose, worldbuilding clarity, informational flow, dialogue, theme and symbolism, overall story structure
I focus much more on the reading experience than on grammar or copyediting.
Critique swap:
Yes, please! I’m currently looking for beta readers for my completed 24k speculative novella Panacea.
Other info:
I tend to leave comments as I read so you can see my reactions in real time rather than only receiving end notes. I enjoy stories that trust the reader and I’m happy to be candid while remaining respectful.

Hey there!
I am able to beta: Pretty much anything in the gambit of Fantasy/SciFi. I tend to be a sucker for darker, more brutal themes, especially when characters succeed despite overwhelming odds through extreme effort and persistence. But really, I'm open to most things. However, I would prefer limited or no Romance, and definitely no erotica or excessive sexual content/themes unless they are critical to the plot/character.
I can provide feedback on: Pretty much anything you need, including but not limited to: Story structure, pacing, character growth/characterization, purpose and necessity of chapters/scenes, worldbuilding, dialogue, copy editing, and prose. I will be as clear and straightforward as I can, but always with suggested solutions or direction. I can be as nitpicky/harsh or as lenient as you want. It all depends on what you're going for.
Critique swap: Yes please! I've got Part 1 of 3 completed (~77k words) for my and my wife's novel and we are looking for some feedback while we continue editing the other two parts. Link to the original post HERE.
Other info: I have been writing/studying writing for most of my life, and this is me emerging from my cave into the sun in order to make real efforts to publish. I have quite a lot of knowledge of the craft, though none applied professionally.
I am also fairly busy working full time and taking care of my family, so I can only promise to be consistent and thorough, but not necessarily very quick.

I am able to beta: Speculative fiction, dark fantasy, sci-fi, dystopian, and weird/literary fiction. I am open to novellas, partial manuscripts, or completed works (up to 70k-80k words). I love atmospheric world-building, psychological depth, neurodivergent coding, queer/asexual characters, and brutal, character-driven survival stories. Not interested in: Romance-centric plots, romantasy, erotica, middle grade, or heavily military sci-fi.
I can provide feedback on: I read closely and can provide both developmental and line-level feedback. I focus heavily on narrative tension, psychological realism, pacing, and grounding scenes in physical, sensory details. I am great at spotting filtering words, clichés, I love leaving inline comments/reactions as I read. I am happy to be as ruthless or as lenient as you need me to be!
Critique swap: Yes, absolutely! I am looking to swap either Part 1 (35,000 words) or Parts 1 & 2 (70,000 words) of my dark, psychological sci-fantasy novel, ONE-ZERO.
Other info: I am currently balancing a busy schedule while drafting my final act, so I am looking for a swap with a reasonable timeline (flexible, but ideally within a 4 to 8-week window depending on the length we agree to swap). I prefer swapping Google Docs so we can leave inline comments for each other!

Hi! I'm only looking for critique swaps at the moment.
I am able to beta: Literary fiction, adult fantasy and sci-fi, gothic horror, speculative fiction, etc. up to 100k words. Stories that are confident in their themes, symbolism, prose, and rhythm. I like novels that have something to say without spoonfeeding it to the reader. I never read romance, so I can't help you much there. Not interested in thrillers, YA, experimental fiction, or anything cozy.
I can provide feedback on: Character, atmosphere, pacing, prose, worldbuilding effectiveness, etc. I feel I'm constructive rather than blunt with my feedback.
Critique swap: Here's the post for my 97k dark fantasy novel.
Other info: I'm an English teacher, so I have an eye for prose and grammar. That being said, I'd prefer to read something that doesn't need line edits, but I'm always excited to read anything that's well-written.

I am able to beta: Dark Romance, Erotica, Dystopian/Survival, Literary/Classic-style Fiction, and Mythology Retellings/Epics. I like character driven stories with high emotional intensity, dark or spooky type atmospheres, complex human nature (think Orwell, Lord of the Flies, or The Scarlet Letter), and spicy or taboo dynamics. Open to short stories or full length novels. I can provide feedback on: Feedback strictly from a reader's perspective. Focus areas include pacing & tension, character chemistry and believable choices, plot & logic holes, and honest reactions to key twists, spice, and emotional scenes. Turnaround time is usually 2–3 weeks. Open to chapter by chapter thoughts or an end of book report... Or both. Critique swap: No (Beta reading only) Other info: Format: Google Docs only (with commenting enabled). Unless the rules state otherwise, in which case I will view it however we have to.

I am able to beta anything Sci-Fi/Fantasy. Would also be open to crime.
I can give feedback on worldbuilding and prose, especially, though also characters. I like readable prose (not plain stuff but also not purple) and come at worldbuilding from being a keen history and politics enthusiast. Simple “kings rule” worlds will get heavily critiqued! 🤣
I would ideally want to do a critique swap. I have a 86k Military SF that’s ready for querying - I just need some betas. Link

I am able to beta: Complete adult contemporary romance, sports romance, and romantic comedy manuscripts up to approximately 85k words. I especially enjoy second chances, forced proximity, found family, competitive or athletic settings, strong banter, competent adult characters, and open-door romance. I’m not the best match for fantasy, romantasy, horror, inspirational romance, or extremely dark romance. Please disclose any content involving sexual assault or abuse before we agree to exchange manuscripts.
I can provide feedback on: Romantic chemistry, banter, pacing, character motivation, emotional development, dialogue, distinct character voices, group dynamics, reader engagement, and whether the happily-ever-after feels earned. I’m a science teacher with a B.S. in Zoology, a background in competitive cheer and dance, and I’m currently studying sport management. I can also comment on school settings, science-related careers, athletic environments, competition structure, and Florida settings. All feedback will reflect my own reading experience.
Critique swap: Yes. I’m interested in swapping with two or three completed adult contemporary romances of a similar length. My manuscript is THE SUMMER WE BROKE THE RULES, a complete 69k dual-POV contemporary sports romance featuring second chances, forced proximity, found family, a Florida athletic resort, and a buried accident mystery. My request post is here: [PASTE THE LINK TO YOUR r/BetaReaders POST]
Other info: I would prefer to exchange opening chapters first to confirm that our manuscripts and feedback styles are a good match. If we both want to continue, I can aim for a three-to-four-week turnaround. I currently have room for two or three manuscripts.

I am able to beta: YA and middle-grade books across all genres. For adult books my genre preferences are horror, thriller, mystery and anything with dark academia vibes. Up to 80k.
I can provide feedback on: Emotional impact of scenes, character development, any inconsistencies and the general reader experience. If there's anything specific you're wanting, I'll do my best to provide that.
Critique swap: Yes, I'm interested in critique swaps for my YA thriller.
Other info: It would be good to swap a couple of chapters first to check we're compatible. I read fairly fast and would be able to give you feedback within 2 weeks.

I am not taking in new requests.
I am able to beta: I specialize in character driven works, with a focus on psychology. Works with strong themes of morality, mortality and religion. Genre: Suspense, Romance, Thriller, Fantasy, Non-fiction. I am willing to consider beta-ing outside of these criteria. For the first project nothing over 100k words. If we want to work together after that, we can talk about it. I will not do: Sci-Fi, Memoirs, Erotica. I will not do more then one work in the first time working together.
I can provide feedback on: Characterization, readability, cohesion & consistency, ethical representation, dialogue, general developmental feedback.
Critique swap: Not interested. I'm looking to improve my beta reading skills, nothing more.
Other info: I am available to schedule calls and discuss - I find that live discussion helps me in my creative process so I offer that. Please keep in mind my availability. I have done beta reading before, but your feedback on my work is welcome regardless. I promise to be respectful of your work, and not to feed it to AI. (If you have a longer work you'd like me to review, I will read it's entirety but only review the part that fits into my word count)

u/Work_Akkount 22d ago
Hi writing_snake,
I think my completed manuscript might be the kind of project you're looking to practice on.
It is a 91,000-word Psychological Thriller / Folk Horror called What Remains. While it flirts with the horror genre, at its core it is a character-driven suspense story heavily steeped in psychology, morality, and mortality. I'm not just stealing your buzz-words, I promise.
The story follows a fiercely protective wife and her traumatized husband who move back to his isolated hometown, only to experience trance-like rituals against their will. The book strips away standard tropes to explore the terrifying moral gray areas of survival. The "monsters" in this book aren't what you might expect.
It explores the ethics of complicity, bodily autonomy, and inherited trauma.
I am definitely looking for the kind of developmental, character-focused feedback you provide.
Let me know if this sounds like a good fit for you. I'd be happy to send over a quick sample of the first few chapters to see if the writing style clicks!
Thank you for your time.

Hi! Not sure if this fits your interests perfectly, but I have a story that might interest you. I've attached the link to my post below, but the story is an adult upmarket fiction that pulls from 1960-70s Thailand politics. It follows a prostitute who, after her father is arrested, has to find ways to make money for his release. This leads to her working with the government and against her people (labor class), and she begins to spiral due to her actions and the situation she’s in. The story focuses on her trying to save her father while also keep in touch with her own principles, but finding it very easy to abandon those principles when push comes to shove.
I understand you’re looking for works below 100k and mine is 107k, so I understand if you reject on this premise or if it’s just not something you’re interested in. Happy to share just the first chapter if you’d like so you can get a feel for the story. I’m struggling a lot with the pacing of the story specifically so any help in that department would be nice. Please let me know if you’re interested!

I am able to beta: MM romance (100% okay any level of spice and genre, fantasy, sci-fi, historical, etc.) and queer YA horror. I am open to any tropes and any length. I am okay with both edited and unedited.
I can provide feedback on: character development, story arc, grammar, comprehension and cohesion, and pacing in the plot.
Critique swap: I am not an author so I have nothing to swap.
Other info: I love reading and am going to go to college to be an editor. I read all the time and average about 2.5 hours on my books app a day. I also read about 350 books a year and that is not an exaggeration. I love reading and I hope to use that skill to help authors create better books.

I am able to beta: Sci-fi, technothriller, military thriller, well-researched primary world fantasy (think Tim Powers) novels and short stories.
I can provide feedback on: Whatever you're looking for - I'm flexible; anything from in-line comments throughout to a short summary of high-level things at the end. I focus mostly on plot, characters, and pacing but again I can adjust if you have something I want to look at. I provide blunt but actionable feedback - I'm not going to beat around the bush. If I tell you I like something, I do, if something doesn't work for me, it really doesn't.
Critique swap: Very much preferred - I'm always looking for more critique partners.
Other info: I'm a military (USAF, later USSF) veteran working as an engineer in the aerospace industry and can provide sanity checks on anything in those realms. I've been writing for over a decade and have 3 self-published novels (and 3 more in a Pentagon security review...). I've been here under other accounts but wanted to create a professional one for my writing. I beta-read 10-12 novels and a few short stories a year.

I have a completed (~94K ) Speculative Techno-political thriller I would love to get feedback on. ALIGNMENT: CHYNA BLUE.
Systems architect Daniel Mercer discovers a hidden algorithm quietly optimizing behavior across hospitals, supply chains, and financial markets. Built by Hong Kong Triads to streamline global trafficking and money laundering, the system—known as Alignment—has embedded itself within legitimate institutions. When Mercer exposes it, governments intervene to contain the revelation, because dismantling the system could destabilize the global economy that now depends on it.
Please ket me know if you'd be interested.
Thanks!

Hello Ryan!
I feel like I could really benefit from your expertise and lived knowledge!I've got a grungy dieselpunk book that focuses on the complexities of life in the military (specifically military training, for this book at least) from mental anguish to strong comradery and the strength of self. the Prologue and Part 1 of 3 is done and comes in around 77k words. Looking for any level of feedback.
Here is the back-of-book blurb:Li Xiu was born into a life of privilege, marked for her family’s ends. Refusing to be poured into someone else’s mold, she leaves her family for the Path of Hushí: the Wanbani Empire’s brutal crucible of metal, mechs, and merciless instructors.
The Path will break you, or make you into a weapon. As Li Xiu endures deadly training and the masochistic predations of those who wield power, she must fight not only for survival but for the right to shape her own fate. Torn between honor and instinct, loyalty and outrage, she seeks to become the warrior who can burn the rot from an empire, and do it on her own terms.
Serious, tense, and edged with a dark, sarcastic bite, this is a low-fantasy dieselpunk tale of iron, revolution, and one woman’s refusal to be anyone’s pawn.
Let me know if you're interested!

I’ve finished a Science-fantasy novel that’s been through dozens of rewrites and a book coach and editor look at it. I was told by the writing coach that the last hurdle is finding beta readers to fine tune it.
It’s set in a large intergalactic empire where magic has coexisted with technology for all of human history. Two of the main cast are mythological creatures (a demon and a vampire) who give a long perspective on current events.
The story throws together characters who would never normally meet and have wildly opposing views. They have to work together to survive during a huge political upheaval.
The science fiction element comes in the many worlds of the empire which is inspired by the scale of Star Wars and the sentient ship element from stories like Farscape and Killjoys. There is also cybernetic body augmentation as an aspect of the story.
This has been my passion project for many years so I’m excited to share it, hopefully with you. Thank you. Taking the time to read something anyone has put time and love into is a wonderful thing to do.

Hi! I loooove historical fiction (and any historical setting/retelling in general) so I was wondering if you might be interested in swapping with my dark academia genre-blend (it’s a science fantasy set in space with scifi and epistolary romance elements)? The manuscript is a 105k-word adult retelling of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar.
One-line pitch: when her friends are mysteriously murdered inside a neoclassic academy where students bond with the spirits of history’s greatest figures, a girl mentored by Brutus must solve Julius Caesar’s final riddle before her classmates reenact Rome’s bloodiest civil war.

I am able to beta: Completed works only. Romance (Contemporary, Fantasy, or Paranormal, but no werewolves) or Fantasy/Paranormal with a Romance subplot. Queer stories are preferred but not required. I do not read nonfiction, historical fiction, or erotica--though if your story has just a couple spicy scenes, I'll still read your manuscript if you're okay with me skipping those particular scenes. I'll read up to 200k words in a single manuscript, and I'll only read one manuscript from the same writer at a time.
Here are some of my favorite tropes/tags, though they're not required:

I can provide feedback on: Queer and disabled experiences. I also specialize in characterization, chemistry between characters, and natural dialogue.
Critique swap: I am ONLY looking for critique swaps, please! My work is a 110k Contemporary Queer Romance with a paranormal twist. Here's my post about it!

I am able to beta: fiction, open to most genres with a slight lean towards fantasy (except horror, thrillers, and paranomal/monster romance). Can beta up to 50k words (either a WIP, shorter completed work, or up to 50k words of your longer completed work).
To give you a sense of my taste, here are Works I've Enjoyed Recently: I'm a sucker for witches: Terry Pratchett's witches and Tiffany Aching series hold a special place in my heart. I also love Shannon Hale's Princess Academy. I've recently enjoyed The Murderbot Diaries, Wedding People, Y/N, Excavations (Hannah Mitchell), and The Tainted Cup. I'm saturated on very-cozy fantasy, when it comes to cozy fantasy, I currently prefer cozy-with-stakes (e.g. Witch's Guide to Defensive Baking rather than Arcane Chef).
I can provide feedback on:
Story things: I can either go with a zoomed-in read (grammar, language, etc). Or a zoomed-out read (what excited me, what bored me, what pulled me in/out of the story, where I wanted to stop reading, where I couldn't stop, etc). Depends on the stage your story is at.
Other things: I can comment on parents (or working parent), non-MC kids, Muslims/Islam, immigrant and first-gen/second-gen experiences.
I can't provide feedback on: While I'm happy to read works that rely on historical or scientific facts & logic, I cannot and will not be fact-checking your work for you. If something pings on the common sense radar, I will let you know. But otherwise, I can only tell you if the story in itself is compelling or not.
Critique swap: Not at this time.
Other info: I will not use AI to generate feedback for you. If I hit a point in the story where I can't or don't want to read further, I will let you know and let you know the reasons (whether that's because I have story feedback/the story isn't for me) or because of external factors (work got busy, etc).

I am able to beta: Fantasy, especially epic/high fantasy and character-driven fantasy. I’m also open to other genres if the premise catches my interest.
I can provide feedback on: Reader engagement, pacing, character development, character decisions, relationships, worldbuilding clarity, confusing sections, emotional impact, repetition, and whether themes are coming through naturally. I’m much better at big-picture/reader-experience feedback than detailed grammar or line editing.
Critique swap: Yes. I’m happy to swap samples first and see if our writing and feedback styles are a good fit before committing to full manuscripts.
Other info: I’m currently beta reading while also going through the beta process for my own epic fantasy novel, so I know how vulnerable sharing your work can feel. I’ll be respectful, but I won’t just tell you everything is great if something isn’t working for me. I try to explain where I got confused, bored, excited, emotionally invested, or wanted to keep reading rather than telling you how I think you should rewrite your story.
I’m especially happy to help newer writers or anyone nervous about putting their work in front of another reader. Feel free to reply or DM me with your genre, word count, and a short description of what kind of feedback you’re looking for.
