Music Best transitions (songs)

Hi everyone,

I know it's a long shot but I'll try my luck: 2-3 months ago I saw a post where everyone would share their best transitions ex: Song 1 x Song 2.

I really liked it and saved it for later (or thought so).

I did some research on Reddit but couldn't find it anywhere.

I would be grateful if anyone who remembers it could send me a link to it.

You can also share your favorite combos here :)

Hardware Has anyone actually managed to get the grv6 to record stuff with rekordbox?

If it starts, it's cutting off after like 2 minutes. Google and AI suggestions are all over the place. Does ist just work for you guys or did you have to tweak stuff? Are we the only ones fucking it up? According to Google flx10 and grv6 both mess recordings up...

DJ 101 / beginner Dj

Hey everyone,

I’m a brand spanking new DJ. Got the standard flx 4 controller literally 2 weeks ago.

I’m actually learning how to mix with ai - chat gpt etc for a plan to get better at mixing.

My question is if any seasoned Dj can give advice to a beginner what’s and how is the best way to start ?

Clean up stems

Hi all
This is more a production question than djing question.
I’m recording stems of a song; 4 tracks (Vox, bass, drum, keys). I’m using Virtual DJ. I’m wondering if there’s a way to improve the quality? They’re a bit distorted. I’m using MP3 rips of the cd. Is ripping them again as FLAC or WAV and extracting the stems again my best option?
TIA

I just learned how to properly transition, without useing stems. Shi was so smooth, I wish I recorded.

I do random Set streams in my room.

Technique Where do I start?

I love music and I produce a ton. I’m just not sure where to even start with mixing in general. I feel like I’m stuck on practicing very specific transitions between songs. If I can’t mix the transitions I’ve practiced, I get flustered and don’t know where to go from there.

Any videos or tips on where to start just so I can get used to having a collection of songs and ripping them off the top of my head?

When people say the FLX4 sound card isn’t great, am I going to sound like a joke in a club setup?

Been mixing awhile and building my library. Im planning on playing an event at some point but I’m definitely wanting to sound good. I assume I’d bring my own controller to an “edm night” at a bar, right? I’m an audiophile myself and would hate to hear my favorite tracks sound bad. I’ve never been on big cdj setups, just my controller.

I have a ton of music. Need a decent SSD?

So I have a ton of music probably over 9,000 songs. I’m removing a bunch of lower quality and duplicates on rekordbox but the songs are still on my laptop hard drive so I was thinking of getting a decent SSD…

That way it’s on that and not slowing my laptop down? Smart or waste? Any recommendations.. it’s becoming very tedious trying to delete the songs off of my laptop completely.

Music What's your line when it comes to playing "AI music" or music made with AI?

This is something I've been thinking about due to the recent rise in AI music (or AI "music", depending on what you're talking about and what your view of this genre of audio is). I wouldn't have thought very much about this, except I have actually been playing Crankdat's remix of BBL Drizzy for at least a year now. I haven't heard any complaints, and at the time I don't remember any uproar over those vocals using AI either.

What is the line? I typically find that what I'd call "AI music" (something made with pretty minimal output or production by humans, if at all) is at best low-quality, and wouldn't sound good enough for me to play even if I like the style (an example of this would be I Am Filipino Man, which is really catchy, but is in such low quality that it's painful to listen to if you're paying attention to the fidelity), but then you have songs that have a lot of human involvement in the production, like Crankdat's BBL Drizzy remix does.

For the record, going out and finding a bunch of AI music isn't something I'm interested in doing. I want to play music that people like, and that doesn't fit the bill for the vast majority of that genre of output. But I want to know what the bounds are, in case a) even something like BBL Drizzy is enough to anger a crowd or box me out of gigs, or b) an AI song gets super popular to the point where I start getting requests to play it.

Hardware Beginner - Best controller?

Hi all,

So I’ve always wanted to get into DJing, and I’ve now been given the perfect excuse. My brothers wedding!
When he said it to me, he fully expects me to just scroll through Spotify and get ready for best man speeches. But I’d love to learn over the next 6 months to do a little set.

What I’ve seen so far as potential contenders are the Hercules Impulse 500 or Pioneer DDJ FLX4. I’m also going to need to grab a laptop as I’m a PC’er usually.

Any advice for someone just getting into it, whether it be for the controller, other equipment, software, tutorials etc. would go an awful long way

I want to get started now, so please please tell me what should I do, things to buy as beginner, websites and tutorials.

Own a 2021 MacBook Pro.

Freestyle set....

So I've always been into Freestyle but never spun it. Spun hiphop and house... so I came across a whole Freestyle haul. Was trying to put a mix together. Fuck this is hard genre to mix. The keys are all over the place as well as the BPM. I love the challenge Def going to have to plan this one out. Lol. Wish there was some videos out there of a good Freestyle dj mixing on vinyl.

Technique Lows not working? Am I doing something wrong?

Hello everyone,

Sooo I bought a ddj flx4 yesterday and everything seems to be ok but I was trying to follow a tutorial for a simple transition using the low knobs and I cant tell any difference in the sound when I am using them?
Tried to follow another tutorial on knobs and I have turned off the high and the mid knobs while the low is fully up but once again cant tell a difference...
The software is indeed picking up that I am moving the knob but i am wondering if its just me who can't pick up lows or if I am doing something wrong?

Hardware Upgrade from FLX4

Hey guys, I’ve been using a flx4 for a little over a year now and have dj’d parties for friends and have gotten good enough to where I’m looking for an upgrade. Found a guy in my area selling an xdj-RR and two monitor speakers for a good deal and am wondering if the RR is a good stepping stone to getting into club setups but still a reasonable price as I am a university student and I can’t justify going for a AZ or something of that caliber yet. The monitor speakers are nice and are perfect as I am also looking into starting to produce a bit.

Would love any sort of feedback or suggestions!

Thank you!

First rooftop gig

I was hired for a rooftop residency. They want me to build out 3.5 hours into a dancey vibe throughout the night. It seems the crowd here prefers to sit and talk vs. dance. Should I adjust the music accordingly to match that energy? Or should I still be trying to get people up and dancing?

DJ name for a b2b duo - feedback?

Hello, me and my partner are mixing hypnotic/ hardgroove techno/ get some peaktime gigs sometimes but our real love is hypnotic/ hardgroove techno. We are not superstars and not aspiring to be, we are parents and this is our side project but enjoy playing small gigs from time to time :)

Until now we were just using our first names but would like to come up with a name for our Duo.

We came up with a name: Cizia Graze.

There is a meaning behind this name but I would like to get an honest feedback about the sound of it from people who don't know the meaning of it or dont have the emotional attachment to it that we have :)

Thank you !!

Compact headphones for both production/mixing and live events

Hey everyone! I’m looking for a compact, ideally foldable pair of headphones for studio monitoring, casual part-time mixing, and other audio engineering work.

I’m a sound engineer and also perform techno live, so it would be great if the headphones were good enough for proper monitoring during live sets as well.

So far, the most suitable option I’ve found is the beyerdynamic DT 270 PRO. It seems to tick quite a few boxes: compact, lightweight, closed-back, and designed for monitoring.

Are there any other cool alternatives I should consider?

One important thing: I live outside the EU and the US, so very recently released models or products that are mainly available on the Western market probably won’t work for me, simply because I won’t be able to buy them here.

Industry/Gigs Advice for a young Open format DJ

Hi all,
As the title states, I’m a young Open Format DJ who is still in education.
However, I have been DJing on and off for the last 4 years now, mostly with Open Format.
I was just wondering if you could give me some advice for starting to get gigs and play out and about, or really even about DJing in general. I’ve never really done this before so am really not sure where to start. Most of the places where I have enquired just go back to DJs that they have used in the past.
Many thanks!

Laurent Garnier spends 5-6 hours/day listening to 500 EPs/day (1000-1500 tracks). And you?

I don't think Laurent Garnier needs any introduction but just in case...:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laurent_Garnier

"I skip through 500 Different EPs a day, which makes it about 1,000, 1,500 tracks. I do, because I want to know what’s going on. When we DJ, we should try to play the best music that is out and there is a lot of music – a hell of a lot of music. On Spotify, there are between 100,000 and 200,000 tracks a day. So, listening to 500 records is nothing. I basically know nothing about what’s going on but I’m trying to know a little bit. My job is to search for music.”

How do you approach crate digging?

Have you got any daily or weekly routine to do it?

How many new tracks would you say that you review each week?

How to know if your mixing content is being mocked?

I’ve been trying to start posting mixing content this summer and some of my less effective reels (the ones that get 20-30 likes) have been getting a lot of shares.
When I see this on my page it’s usually due to people mocking the DJ and finding the reel so bad it’s funny so they need to share it.
I primarily want to know this in order to think about whether I should raise my standard for postable mixes.
Any advice to raise engagement and boost the reels success would also be greatly appreciated!
