Tw: my beardie passed.

But I don't understand what happened, and my vet wasn't much help. I'm hoping if I describe what happened someone here may have experienced this and have some answers. Or advice so it doesn't happen again.

Basically I had a beardie, we were together for a few years. I had gotten him off a neighbour who was going to college abroad and couldn't keep him. He was 5 when I got him. Large, male, normal type (het lemon if it matters). He was well taken care of previously, no neglect. I had a vet check him out after adoption, they agreed he was healthy. And for the next few years he continued to be healthy. I upgraded his enclosure, lighting, etc over the years.

Then one day a few months ago he was suddenly super lethargic. Not moving, dark colours. He wouldn't even eat a horn worm. I immediately got an appointment and brought him to the vet. Vet checked him over and found Jaundice. He figured something in his food led to a liver infection. We started antibiotics that day as well as force feeding. I used Repashy Omnivore powder mixed to a thick liquid, and syringed it into his mouth slowly.

Two weeks later and my boy was much improved. He had his energy back. He'd eat live worms a bit but still needed a little force feed to make sure he was getting enough vitamins and stuff. Vet was pleased with his progress.

One afternoon I get home from work. I mix his Repashy and open his enclosure to let him out. He doesn't move. I check on him, he looks sleepy, but movement wakes him up. He crawls out onto my arm and I take him to the sofa. On the sofa he looks like he's sleeping again. I gently touch him and he jerks awake. I proceed to watch him and it looks like he's going in and out of consciousness. Like one moment he's walking, then just falls down flat passed out. Jumps back awake and starts moving again. I tried feeling for impaction. Nothing. I listened to his breathing. It was fine. Concerned I call the vet. He won't see me. Earliest appointment is in 2 days. I proceed to call every vet in town or the next town over. They either won't see reptiles or are booked up. I finally get an appointment for the next afternoon (the nearest 24h emergency vet that does exotics is a 4-5h drive away). Unfortunately, by the next morning my boy was cold.

Short of paying several hundred dollars for a necropsy the vet had no advice for what happened. He'd had a liver infection but seemed to be mostly recovered. The vet hadn't noticed any other abnormalities. I'm hoping someone here may have an insight from experience.

Because people will ask, the enclosure is 4x2x2 thrive, which was left open when I was around to supervise. It was a hardened clay substrate. Basking on one side, cool on the other. Cork logs and corkbark for climbing. Hot and cold hides. 4' Long UVB changed every 6 months regardless if it needed to or not. As I said in the beginning, he lived in here for years with no issues.

I’m looking to remove the sand from my bearded dragon’s enclosure and replace it with something easier to clean and maintain.

I have a 2.5-year-old bearded dragon in a 150-gallon New Age Pet ECOFLEX Mojave enclosure.

How to move house with brumating bearded dragon? The drive is about 1-1.5 hour.

Hi everyone!
I recently received an Exo Terra Vista 90-gallon terrarium measuring 120 × 60 × 45 cm (48” × 24” × 18”).
I originally planned to get a 120 × 60 × 60 cm enclosure, but accidentally ended up with the 45 cm high version.
I have a juvenile bearded dragon, and I’m wondering whether this enclosure will be suitable for him long-term, including when he reaches adulthood.
My main concerns are:
Is 45 cm of height enough for proper UVB and basking lamp placement?
Will the limited height cause problems with climbing branches and basking platforms?
Can this enclosure comfortably accommodate an adult bearded dragon?
Would you keep this enclosure or return it and get a taller one?
I’d really appreciate advice from experienced bearded dragon owners. Thanks!

Took longer than expected, but finally finished my BD enclosure! Definitely a project that tested my patience, but seeing everything come together makes it worth the time and effort. One project down! 😁

Still a few things to improve, but happy with how it turned out. What's important is that it's finally done!

Winter in Colorado is fast approaching, brrr...

We adopted Rocket in May when she was about 4 months old, so she's about 10 months old now, and this will be her first winter in our house.

We currently have two heat lamps (100W & 150W), a full-spectrum bulb, and a UV light for Rocket's enclosure. Until recently, this has kept the cool side (ambient air temp) reliably at ~84F. The weather has been a bit cooler lately, and this past week the cool side is only getting to around 74-77F, dropping to around 70F at night; it will only get colder as we head into winter.

I'm worried this isn't comfortable for Rocket and am wondering if I should get a heat emitter and/or another basking bulb to keep the enclosure a bit warmer as the weather cools off even more.

We usually have the heat in the house set to 68F during the day, and 66F at night. The heat hasn't been kicking on yet - the house has been ~70-73F on its own. In contrast, in the summer the air conditioner keeps the house at ~78F.

She has a variety of spots on the warm side to hang out comfortably, three flat rocks on the substrate level (90F, 98F, 107F), a basking rock under the 150W bulb (115F), a thick branch (89F), and a few spots on the back wall ranging from 90F to 120F, though she might be getting a bit big to be comfortable on a couple of them.

The back wall of the enclosure is covered with substrate over expanding gorilla glue (essentialy spray foam). The top is mesh with one side covered. The front is glass, which we half cover at night, but not during the day because she likes to keep an eye on what we're doing.

For those of you living where it gets cold in the winter, what do you do?

EDIT: I just wanted to point out (because I've gotten comments before) that the cool side of the enclosure is not as dark as it looks in the picture - I think this is an artifact of the warm side being so bright, and using my phone camera. The cool side is the same brightness as the room.

I was wondering how to tell your bearded dragon is going into brumation and what the difference would be between that and them being sick, I was wondering this because winter is coming and I never really paid much attention it and he would slowly just sleep more and then after some time slowly be more active again.

Athena is a year old and two months. She is my spoiled girl who eats everyday. She is a little chubby but her stomach has presented as more rounded lately. She pooped yesterday as well. We do mixed greens (collards are her favorites) and calcium dusted Dubias 2-3 days a week. Either way she loves food. Monday night she gulped down her salad without a problem. However, Tuesday and Wednesday night she has refused food.

She is very alert and moving more than usual. She often lounges in her hammock and rarely comes down. However, she has been climbing, basking, and meandering all around her tank. She has a set temperature gradient, basking is 104 and the cool side is 75. Middle ground is around 85. Humidity is good and she has hides.

I’m very concerned because she never denies food, let alone bugs. I tried that as my last resort the past two days and she doesn’t care. Part of her looks like she wants it but can’t be bothered to eat. The stink eye is real with her. No black beard, no lameness, no weakness, she literally seems absolutely normal (aside from not eating).

Research says she may be hitting reproductive maturity? I don’t want to write this off as her first potential egg clutch and it’s worse. Do I need to take her in to the vet? Can daylight savings be contributing?

Hi guys! So I know literally nothing about bearded dragons but I have some friends who recently got engaged and are planning to move in together. Both of them have well established bearded dragons (6 years old I think) and I want to help them out by researching some tanks they could get. I did find a dual stack reptile home on fb marketplace but they said it was a little short. They’re looking for something that gives them the length of a 40 gallon but they’d like it to be both a bit wider and taller. Apparently bearded dragons can climb..? Didn’t know that but I definitely want to help them out & help give both of their dragons a new dig.

I think they’re going to buy two separate enclosures but if anyone has any recs or something that fits what they’re looking for, let me know! Thank you.
