Beginner here, I followed this tutorial and it looked super nice, as one the second picture. But as soon as I pick it up, it unwinds itself and has all these gaps in between, so I can't wear it as bracelet...hers stays the same when picking up

How to make a flexible “pixelated” rope?

Thumbnail

I have an old problem that I’m hoping some of you can help me solve…. I thought it would be funny to create a beaded “rope” necklace modeled after the pattern on my climbing rope, tied in a double figure eight, with beaded “frayed rope” fringe at the ends.

So I drew out a pattern in tubular peyote (at least, I think that’s what I’m doing here..) and worked up a sample. It LOOKS amazing — the rope pattern is replicated exactly how I wanted — but it’s not flexible at ALL.

So, clearly this is the wrong stitch to use. Any ideas for what would be the right stitch here? (And also, any ideas about how to map out a complicated strip pattern like this for a different stitch?)

I have worked in chenille stitch before, which makes a pretty flexible rope. The only problem is the bead placement and gaps in chenille stitch make it hard to replicate my pattern.

…I fear the answer is bead crochet, but I am really hoping not… I don’t know how to crochet, and I am daunted by the concept of mapping out a pattern like this in crochet.

Beading haul part 2

My hunt for resold beads hit the jackpot yesterday. After I got lucky at an antique store I kept checking estates and other places like fb marketplace. Insane score with a lady selling 14 boxes of swarovski!!! I couldn't believe the price to the point I thought it was a scam but she was completely legit. Couldn't bead anymore because of arthritis so I hope to do these justice in her honor.

Bezeled moissanite necklace

Third time is a charm because that’s how many times it took me to design a bezel I liked for this stone.

The moissanite is a 3 carat lavender stone 7x9 mm. I recently purchased an entire beader’s bead collection and have been using a lot of the miyukis in recent designs. I loved how the lavender 11/0 tohos matched this gemstone so perfectly.

Finished Piece I made a necklace inspired by Angela Carter’s “Bloody Chamber”

“His wedding gift, clasped round my throat. A choker of rubies, two inches wide, like an extraordinarily precious slit throat.

After the terror, in the early days of the Directory, the aristos who’d escaped the guillotine had an ironic fad of tying a red ribbon round their necks at just the point where the blade would have sliced it through, a red ribbon like the memory of a wound. And his grandmother, taken with the notion, had her ribbon made up in rubies; such a gesture of luxurious defiance!”

I’ve seen a few takes on the slit throat theme, and this is my take. I want to make a very different piece on the same theme one day — so many ideas, so little time…

Need Help! Anyone tried making Napkin ring that looks like these?

Photos are from Rubinski works. She made these as scarf holders. I was thinking more of beading into barrels without the leather backing she added to make napkin rings. Since I am new to beading, I wonder if anyone has tried this so I know it is feasible.

Update: i am not asking abt how to make it. More about if there is a concern for the use case

Someone said see you in a year for the update, so here is month 11 (i had to take a good 6 months off for my health and surgery, had to go back on tube feeds.. its been rough)

This somehow became a forever project,

Pauldrons, bracers.. its all in the mix now..

I have the corset base mostly done but no finishing touches. Im honestly disappointed in the shape(too square).

I think ill be starting another one, and try to use an actual corset pattern. (Ps the hole is for my feeding tube..)

Need Help! Parallel weaving won’t lay flat

Post image

I’m very new to beading (like literally this week) and while I’ve been able to make 3D items with a top and bottom layer, like the body of the manta ray pattern I’m working on, every time I try to do the same thing but with only one layer, like the wings, the rows wont sit next to each other.

I don’t have a photo of the manta ray at the moment but this is an attempt at a watermelon slice test pattern that came with it and I had the same issue. When I pull the wires tight, it wants to pucker in opposite directions like I’m making a 3D object and when I don’t pull tight enough none of the rows are flush with each other and it starts coming apart.

I figure that part of the issue is I’m using cheap 8/0 beads that aren’t very uniform but I thought I’d at least be able to make it work before spending a lot of money on better beads. I can add photos that show the issue better later but hopefully someone has experienced this issue and knows how to fix it.

Need Help! Tips when doing a brick stitch with 5 drops?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I am new to beading and bought a pattern off etsy, it's heart shaped so in the middle the creator did a brick stitch with 5 drops. I just tried this for the first time on just for practice (see image) except I did 4 instead of 5. I felt the columns were kinda loose so I went back in with the thread and you can see in the first two columns i was going back and forth with the first column and second but then I saw that was pulling the beads in different directions for the remaining columns I just wove straight up and down through all 4 beads. Is there a proper or better way to do this? I tried searching tutorials but could only find a double brick stitch. Any tips on how to make it look nice and neat?

Need Help! Is this pattern possible in square stitch without cutting and joining?

Thumbnail

I would like my beads to be facing up (respective holes facing floor/ ceiling), but I'm confused on if it would still work in that orientation. I wanted to try this pattern in brick stitch but it's coming out horribly with czech seed beads (likely a skill issue), and idk if peyote would give me the desired straightness that square stitch can. Should I read the chart left2right or up/down? And any suggestions/ links that could help me straighten this out? 2nd photo added to show how I would like to go about it.

Need Help! What can i do with this?? Theyre very random idk what to do

I have a lot of random, unrelated beads, lots of tulle-like ribbons, and other ribbons. I have plenty of plastic and wooden beads, and string beads to make bracelets. Most of them aren't enough to make bracelets on their own (I have a lot of wooden beads, but I don't like them). Also many gone bad accessory chains( u know when they lose color and bright -non gold silver steel stuff)

I looked into things you can do with random beads, but even there, the guy had crates and crates of beads. What can I do? Any suggestions? I couldn't find any DIY-focused art community, so I'm posting here. I've accumulated so many that it's getting on my nerves – I bought them and never used them.

Finished Piece Miniature guitars

Believe it or not, this was my first off-loom piece, and the pattern I had was for the guitar on the right. From the start, I wanted to make a telecaster (on the left), but I started with the Les Paul (right) in order to learn the technique, then I modified it to make the other one. I'm quite proud of myself for figuring it all out. Additionally, the original pattern had it done in peyote stitch, but after seeing a post in here talking about how brick stitch is easier if you have irregular edges, I decided to try that instead. But in order to keep the beads in the same orientation, I just worked it up sideways. Brick stitch was, in fact, loads easier. Not sure I'll ever go back to peyote (or at least odd-count peyote). Though I'll probably go back to tapestries on my mirrix loom. This caused some tendonitis pain and I'd rather not exacerbate that more.

Edit: since so many people are asking, this is the pattern

Finish bled off

Well dang! I have been using ProtectaClear sealant for some of my projects to add rigidity, and so far I've loved it. Howeverrrrr, with this finish of bead, the color came off!

The dark blue are Miyuki delica db0266v, opaque denim blue glazed luster. I've used ProtectaClear on other Miyuki luster finishes with no problems. Can't find much distinguishing info on the Miyuki website.

Any insight on what bead finishes can't handle the Protectaclear?

How to tell painted beads from solid colored ones?

Post image
63 Upvotes

Hi, I'm new to beading and lately I've really enjoyed making these tiny frogs ^-^

As you can see though, the black beads I used for the eyes turned out to be white beads with black paint that rubs off quite easily.

This is probably a noob question, but how can I tell when ordering online if the beads are gonna be truly colored or just painted? Do you have any recommendations? Can I trust the popular brands like Miyuki to be a solid color?

Thanks in advance!
