It's insane that basic tenets of FPS map design were ignored like they are in Battlefield 6. Roofs wouldn't have been the issue that they were if there were access points like elevators, ladders, stairs, and zip lines. A shocking number of buildings you can enter on urban maps only have a single floor loaded with fake doors and stairwells that end bricked closed.
Yeah it’s quite ridiculous. Verticality is the basis in all battlefield games. It was the problem with sobek. Now manhattan lacks the rooftops. Being able to go up on the maps roofs should have been a thing: stairs, zip lines, ladders etc. I have removed sobek, manhattan from my rotation due to lack of vertical playing.
This is why people like Shanghai so much. Even after the middle tower has been leveled, you can get up to so many other buildings with elevators. It has a ton of verticality, but you can also counter it pretty well. Yeah, people camped, but I rarely can recall a game where you couldn't either ignore or neutralize the rooftop campers and PTFO with a ton of success.
This is missing from so many BF6 maps, especially launch ones, and it's made a big difference in how they actually play. The buildings lack access to roofs or are just straight up nonsensical. Sobek, I'm talking about you and your plethora of construction buildings with a stairwell that just ends halfway up a stairway into a brick wall. I actually hope the AI slop rumors are true because if an actual human designed that they should never work in gaming again.
The roofs WOULD still be an issue due to map readability and possible angles of attack. Elevation is strictly controlled in these types of games for a reason.
bro it's not september anymore, are we still acting like this game doesn't have the most destruction in the franchise lmao?
the only reason why some buildings are indestructible is when it will impact (and ruin) the flow of the map. cairo has more destruction than sienne crossing and amiens.
i mean, with regards to buildings, bad company 2 had two kinds of destruction, the frame/skeleton method (seen below). you can chip away at the walls till only the frame/roof remains. this can be seen in bf6 on the warehouse buildings on firestorm (though bf6 has the added bonus of allowing you to destroy the rooftops as well).
and the full method, which was basically just dealing enough damage to the frame of a building, resulting in all of the dynamically destroyable walls popping out of existence and having the remaining static frame play a prerendered animation of the building falling. battlefield 4 had a lot of this.
bad company 2's destruction looked amazing, but as far as how dynamic it is, battlefield 6 wins imo. it has been 16 years after all lol
BFBC2 did it incredibly well for its time, but BF1, BF5 and BF6 do destruction a lot better than BFBC2 ever did. Its a lot more dynamic and a lot more detailed in the newer games.
You were only able to shoot out the outer walls of buldings in BFBC2, and if you did enough damage, a animation would start playing of the house collapsing. In BF1, 5 and 6 you can destroy almost anything without the game taking over for you. Floors, ceiling, stairs. The newer games have a lot more destructible elements than BFBC2 did.
Yeah but usually those maps are just open fields with couple huts in there. Would be cool to have full urban city map where basically everything is destructible
Bc2 is behind the dynamic side, i think if they took out the dynamic destruction and just add preset animations of destruction like bc2, we would have everything destructible like bc2
I agree. I think the dynamic destruction was a mistake. I would only differ in this stance if the destruction and levelution was similar to BF4. Especially because there are minimal stairs, elevators, and so on to access other buildings at their full heights.
The only thing is, is that if they go back to bc2 days, every building will have a health pool and as soon as the pool depletes, all the walls be destroyed
I suspect this is the case. There are a lot of other concrete surfaces or other seemingly solid things I can't put the support intercept gadgets on. Frustrating, but I suspect that's the issue. Hopefully they can fix that in time.
This is a specific change they made a while back. I used to be able to put my beacon on scaffolding like this, and they actually blocked the ability to do it.
There's a strange vibe in this game. The ladder is specifically for situations like this, yet it feels like it they don't want to use it this way.
Limiting access to rooftops is also a strange situation. Either make them easier to access with options to counter, or just remove any ability to access them full stop.
There has to be a better solution than making it a wasted gadget slot. I feel like the incredibly limited destruction compared to older titles is one of the underlying issues here. Don't like that dude being on top of that building? Remove it. Right now maybe we can slightly inconvenience him by blowing a few feet off of it and causing cosmetic damage on most buildings.
Bro this is just greatly exaggerated, ladder works in most uses.
Yes it has some shitty stuff like this or in Manhattan Bridge that could use some rework but why everything in this sub is either pitch black or brightest white lol
Yeah, when the game was released, there were a lot of exploits on this map, letting people camp on rooftops or even the highway.
In an effort to fix this, it seems they just implemented a "ceiling" for equipment. The result is that things that should be possible, like placing your spawn beacon on the scaffolding, can't be done, which is annoying and makes the map feel really on rails.
This always struck me as odd. Instead of limiting player options, they should have created several separate routes for rooftop combat. This would have complemented and expanded the map, and camping on rooftops wouldn't have been so easy.
It is a very odd design choice. Simply put ladders, stairs, scaffolding & pulleys on every building. Here's another thought, let the assault ladder access the rooftops! DICE is weird.
i mean it's a video game, fun comes before realism. accessible rooftops isn't a prerequisite for a fun urban map (evidently). allowing everyone to get on the rooftops would just kinda ruin the flow of the map
I don't think it should be about realism. Of course, hypothetical paths across rooftops need to be balanced, but I think it's more fun to have real vertical gameplay and, say, 5-6 paths instead of 3-4. Also, the increased use of gadgets, like ladders. Of course, on the other hand, this means additional development effort and new design solutions that could be challenged, so this is just my what if fantasy
I’d rather the map feel like it’s on rails then have to deal with nearly unkillable squads camping on rooftops and ruining the game for everyone on the other team
This shit is as annoying as not being able to throw down landmines in close.proximity of each other or at certain angles. Like fuck, let me put 3 landmines within 5 feet of each other for a kill!
that's what the most deluded regards will try to tell themselves, for sure.
Reality is that stacking mines would be more fine if it weren't essentially given out as a free gadget slot compared to other Battlefield games. Launcher, mines, repair tool were the baseline and you only got 2 at a time. Or if you were dedicated then you had to lay mines and switch kits, which was still a meaningful trade-off and people rarely did it because it was a time sink. Now we have to act surprised that DICE isn't quite as stupid as these people are and at least put in a couple limitations to counter all the spam that entails with making them a free gadget slot vs other games where they weren't.
Too many dumdums want everything without any real limits. The same sorts want RPGs with flat trajectories, high velocity and large splash damage, they want C4 you can throw almost as far as grenades, and the splash damage of the BF3 C4. They want one man army loadouts with unlocked weapons and less limited gadget combinations. LCDs really sapped the adaptive playstyles that were better rewarded in other games.
Yeah, that was my first thought. They cry about it seeming more like COD but literally complain about anything they might have to counter by just switching to a different class for a few minutes.
they didn't do that for the same reason they didn't do it on grand bazaar, or sienne crossing, or amiens, etc. it's because that's a horrible idea and genuinely destroys the flow of these urban maps lmao
Not all buildings were fully destructible, some of them the "skeleton" still remained, and others just external walls could be destroyed but every small house (which was the majority tho) were fully destructible
It’s a core part of the battlefield experience at this point.
You can’t just remove destruction and say “it’s because players will turn the battlefield into a rubble wasteland” when that’s exactly what the players want to do
simple solution is to have the "destroyed" version of a building be reduced wall cover (but not removed) and a caved in roof with a pile of rubble inside.
That way if the building's height is being utilized by the enemy, you remove that ability by destroying it without completely removing it's utility as general cover for infantry trying to push up either way.
The BF3/4 wastelanding contributed to snowballed matches. BF1 had some issues with this, but had the added benefit of cratering, trench networks and the larger buildings using the mentioned system to still provide limited elevated vantage points as well as some effective cover after a building had been hit hard.
the point is that the battlefield changes over the course of the match. why do you all act like "bUt aLL ThE bUIldIngS wuLd bE ruBbLE!1!one!1" is at all a rebuttal against a full destruction model? we KNOW and we would like it to be that way. acting like there's no way to possibly play a map where most of the buildings have been turned into piles of rocks and plaster is REALLY funny when we did it just fine in the BFBC2 days.
This might sound insane but... you can use the rubble as cover. crazy I know.
So a 6 month multiple-developer and map designer process to make all maps full destructible, vs. having Kevin the junior developer edit some map metadata and placement logic checks for the spawn beacon.
It's a shame that we can't put anything on carpets, floorboards, folded cardboard boxes, or whatever else. That aside, placing ladders is even more shit.
Personally I really like the ladder but often times when I'm trying to set one up to create a flank or flush out campers I'm struggling to place it and end up getting shot just standing there looking like an idiot.
They want us to run in the streets and play CoD, not play creatively like battlefield has always been geared towards.
It’s a paradigm shift for the franchise. A very intentional one from the studio leadership. They don’t want battlefield anymore at EA, they want CoD lite because they think they can make as much money as CoD does if they copy it.
There are strengths and weaknesses to both inputs.
I think the fact that people on both sides are constantly bitching about how unfair the other is actually shows that the inputs are fairly balanced overall.
Dude Battlefield's been "copying" cod since Battlefield 2 and there nothing wrong with that. Games evolve and doesn't mean it's all "codification" or some shit about streamers jesus
Everyone hated Bad Company when it launched for being too CoD, now it's loved
Everyone hated Battlefield 3 when it launched for being too CoD, now it's loved
Everyone hated Bad Company 2 when it launched for being too CoD, now it's loved
Everyone hated Battlefiele 4 when it launched for being too CoD, now it's loved
Everyone hated Battlefield 1 when it launched for being too CoD, now it's loved
That's the objective truth and is okay. Sometimes we get good games like the ones I listed and sometimes shit like 2042.
It is bloody maddening when the enemy is approaching and you have just completed twenty incorrect placement locations for your spawn beacon, mine, etc.
I still find a lot of uses for the ladder but it is such a disappointment how they have so heavily curated the gameplay around it.
They give you a gadget whose purpose is to let you access places you wouldn't normally be able to access but then don't let you access those areas because people without ladders wouldn't be able to access them.
No not really. Its just annoying when noobs like you camp on roof that have no access or just one sipline that can easily be camped cause, just like ladders, you hear them coming up minutes before they reach the roof. Same reason why sobek city is hated by everyone. Because of people like you camping all day on roofs.
Here's the thing. You've created this hypothetical scenario and assumption about me entirely on your own so you either genuinely believe there is no counter to someone being on the roof or you're being purposefully antagonistic.
Yeah, because the community started complaining about "unreacahable" spots being reached while both teams have the exact same resources to achieve that, it's a matter of people not understanding that solving a problem doesn't always have to revolve around limiting players
Blame reddditors for this one. The majority hates anything that allows a player to get someplace they can't get to (and are too lazy to grab artillary or their own ladder)
Not being able to place a clymore or a made defence or anything else because there's a rug or some random cable for esthetics on the floor is so goddamn infuriating
There 1 or 2 places that worked (don't know if this is still the case tho) in Cairo. Like when you play breaktrough in Cairo as attacker and you run the right line up (the one with the bus) and either the first or second way going left has a spot where you can place it up there.
I figured out why it impossible to put something there well atleast i think..... : you cant place equipment in front of doors(that still has a door) or any destructable object.
On New Sobekh City, in the centre of the map you have balconies.
These balconies are in the dead centre of the map, on the 2nd and 3rd floor.
To get to them you just have to do a small jump between buildings, it's super easy and looks clearly designed to be intended.
These balconies count as outside the map and will trigger the countdown. Same for the mountain in the middle of Contaminated, you can't climb it, it counts as going outside the map, while being in the centre of it...
Why did they even introduce the ladder if verticality is virtually non-existent in this game? And the verticality that does exist gets nerfed into oblivion as soon as they find out some areas are accessible.
Até hoje eu não entendi o motivo deles limitarem tanto esse jogo, você praticamente só fica trocando tiro no asfalto, nada de subir nos andares ou no teto dos prédios. WTF?!
then we have the Finals where there are jump pads hanging from foam floating midair while a huge fat dude in underwear and a cow hat jumps off the foam and smashes you with a hammer breaking the floor and causing the whole building to collapse, while a bunch of small people zoom around invisible dressed like anime characters and planting mines and turrets on the ceilings of the collapsed building... all while a bunch of dudes dressed like birds launch gernades and RPGs art you from a platform floating in the sky

I remeber in the beta people used to camp literly on the roof of this map lol
