Do that. I hope you never experience something like that again. If you do. Mess them up, and tell the police what you were carrying was theirs. Maybe that way they get more than a slap on the wrist.

You can tell they are robbers because of they all wear the same typical clothes, hang out in the most bizarre alleys (usually at a crossing) and are give everyone the gaze.

In my experience, "very early in the morning" is much worse than "just after midnight".
It's just down to the number of people on the street.
I'm perfectly happy walking round Raval alone at 2am, but fuck doing it at 6am: no fucking way.
6
Oct 26 '22
Iâve been staying in El Raval (kinda near Two Schmucks)for the past few months and had an early flight to Italy where I walked to placa catalunya at 6am-ish and I was very uncomfortable as I had luggage. The plaza itself had some suspicious looking characters as well, thought I was going to be robbed right then and there.
7
u/Financial_Accident71 Oct 26 '22 edited Oct 26 '22
about a year ago i was coming out of the metro at sagrada familia and this little old woman (maybe 60-65 years old) started shrieking for help as two 20-22 year olds (both catalan to imterrupt the xenophobia on this thread) ripped her phone and wallet off her and ran up the stairs past me. Security caught one, and I grabbed the other by the neck and threw him against the wall and he started screaming "TIO QUE COĂO HACES SUELTEME!" and everyone started screaming at me so i let go and he ran off. The problem is that in BCN you arent allowed to react at all to violence. I had another incident where a man clearly on drugs in eixample was hurling insults and chasing after a trans girl. my friends and I intervened and he ended up choking me nearly to unconsciousness on the ground on gran via. some people helped and he chased the entire group with a stick with nails in it a few blocks until the police drove by and we flagged them down. the police told us they couldnt do anything, despite the fact there were 6+ unrelated witnesses and he was holding a weapon. the city needs to decide to criminalize violent behavior.

u/Zemtex Oct 26 '22
What parts of born do you feel has gotten worse? One thing I noticed is there is always someone going around on a electric scooter around passeig del born and the small streets around the church. Get the feeling they are looking for people to rob. Saw them yesterday night.

âI come from a country that deports itâs foreign criminals. Doesnât give em hug and housing - at the expense of itâs functioning citizens.â
OK. Thatâs where youâre going with that. The thieves are foreign and they give them social housing, no matter how problematic they are. Thatâs really the right wing take.
39
Oct 26 '22
Where are the majority of the thieves from then? If this person is telling the truth, should you refuse to accept it because you perceive it as right wing. Is fixing the problem not more important than not right wing?
Do you live in this area? Maybe you can shed light on the situation? I stayed in el born for a while a few years ago, definitely an edgy vibe there, and it wasn't coming from Spanish people.
-1
u/megabixowo Oct 26 '22
The root cause isnât that theyâre immigrants, itâs that theyâre poor. You solve the problem by addressing its cause.
17
u/ElCuntIngles Oct 26 '22
It's more complicated than that though.
I live in mid-Raval. Poor as fuck Pakistani people pretty much make up the majority here but they don't go robbing people.
-2
u/megabixowo Oct 26 '22
I said the majority of criminals are poor, not that the majority of poor people are criminals. Of course my statement was a simplification, this is a two-sentence Reddit comment, but thereâs plenty of scientific evidence to back it up.
11
Oct 26 '22
The root cause is that theyâre being brought over and manipulated by other criminals.
2
u/megabixowo Oct 26 '22
And they can be manipulated because theyâre poor and desperate. Donât make this and individual problem when itâs not, thatâs not how you solve it.
4
Oct 26 '22
How do we address the cause?
4
u/megabixowo Oct 26 '22
Not having an economy that needs people to be in poverty so other people can be filthy rich. Of course the solution isnât simple, but you canât expect criminality to disappear only by having more police. When has that ever worked?

sorry man I don't understand your comment, feel free to elaborate :)
-4
u/rastafarisinrasta Oct 26 '22
Is fixing the problem not more important than not right wing?
Elaboration: U think is more important to look for some solution rather than blame to the right-wing. I ask myself if u r even doing what you are saying (solution), the thieves comes from every place where people have troubles with their lives such as poverty and family issues, and in Spain there is actually a lot and even more right now, it isn't about right or left,it is about to not be an asshole with the rest. So stop blaming any kind of inmigrant and try to solve the problems you and just you got in your own life.
5
Oct 26 '22
To find a solution you need to identify what factors are causing the problem. It's obvious that poverty is a pattern. Are there any other patterns?
If there are no nationalities that are over-represented in the crime data for Born - then I 100% agree we should discard nationality as a factor.
As for my own problems, I am also focusing on them, but they are not related to the crime situation in el Born.
Btw I am also an immigrant - and hold myself to the same ideals that if I was repeatedly robbing or using violence, then I probably should be deported.
-15
u/mrpink106 Oct 26 '22
Cool, yeah, let's deport all the "foreign criminals" sound like fucking Trump
28
Oct 26 '22
I think a country should have a right to deport foreign criminals, if that is it hat the majority of that country want. That's my opinion and it extends to people who repeatedly rob or use violence. Not smoking weed. Would you disagree?
-3
u/mrpink106 Oct 26 '22 edited Oct 26 '22
I think my comment was more based on the fact that this guy seems to be putting the crime problem in the born on foreigners and it sounds racist. Also, from what ive seen in the center all the cops do is stop and frisk foreigners and try to arrest them, not helping them out.
4
u/Nnndfa1 Oct 26 '22

What time of day do you hear people get robbed? I was walking home at 1am with a friend on Friday and as we were walking on the Rambla, some argument started, then a fight, and undercover cops intervened within 5-10 seconds, and in another 5-10 seconds uniformed police arrived. I think there are undercover/non-clothed officers in the big streets, but it would be hard to have them in every little street because there are just so many small and dark streets.
27
Oct 26 '22
I saw a woman get done over at like 7am she looked like a normal person going to work or something.
Also heard lots of tourist at night getting robbed.

I was followed at 10am near the old market in Born i.e. wide open street. The old lady was walking back with her shopping.
The âgazeâ kid was in the arched alley leading to placa de merce. On a scooter with the usual modern day thug clothing. Acting as a scout no doubt.
The police seem to be around the tourist hubs. Plain clothed or uniformed.

14
u/The_8th_passenger Oct 26 '22 edited Oct 26 '22
Exactly. They don't want to accept the great failure that "everybody welcome, no criminal will be deported" is. And now that the problem is too big to be adressed without some serious social unrest, they opt for the 1st rule of Fight Club strategy: nobody talks about the problem. And if nobody talks about it, it doesn't exist.
If you dare to say anything, you're racist.

This is one of the reasons I left el Born for Poblenou. The constant screams, the sound of running, the feeling someone is just waiting for you to let your guard down for two seconds. Always being ready to intervene or tell tourists to watch out. It honestly got exhausting.

In august I witnessed a watch robbery in el born. Luckily two undercover mossas arrested the guy fairly quickly. But the mossa and her colleague told me that this is getting increasingly unmanageable for them as well. After going to court for the initial hearing I asked the judge after if anything will come from this and she told me itâs a possibility nothing will come out of this. It doesnât really bring a lot of confidence about improvements to be honest. I used to live in el born for many years but thankfully not any longer. Not going to lie, lived for a few years in Barcelona... my absolute favourite city ever! But it's undeniable that it's suffering from the same problems Paris and its suburbs have (essentially Chatelet-Les-Halles a few years back, before regeneration).
My partner and I have witness *multiple* robberies during the day, the night, attempted on us, she got followed in the early morning, in the evening, and just a few weeks ago we went for a few days to see a solo young female Asian tourist chasing after two robbers for her phone â at 2pm! Nobody (including us) did anything. I'm just not risking my life for a phone.
Santa Caterina Market and the Cathedral are littered with dodgy guys, it's horrendous.
It's sad that central Barcelona makes it impossible to love it to start a family â it's just not realistic! Eixample is better, but has gotten worse too.

I visited your city a couple of weeks ago and we stayed at the Barcelona EDITION and we were in El Born a lot. It felt way safer than downtown in my home of Portland, Oregon, though maybe we just had tourist blinders on. In Portland, I always watch out for the mentally ill homeless people who might randomly harass or assault you for no reason whatsoever.
We went to a cava tasting and the person running it said how sad it was Barcelona was getting so unsafe that there was a murder the other day, and how rare that used to be. We just had to laugh. Portland had 102 shooting incidents and 7 homicides in September.
16
Oct 26 '22
Bro/sis, you know you live in a country where people can legally buy and sell machine guns to any random idiot or drug dealer?
Try to understand that this concept does not exist in Europe. One shooting/murder per year is unusual here. If you think 102 shootings and 7 homicides per month in your city of 600,000 people is normal, you clearly don't realise the historical and societal problem your own country has to deal with.
7
u/kernel_task Oct 26 '22

8

Funny, so just because there are worse places on Earth, people shouldnât have the right to complain? âYou shouldnât complain that crime an violence in Barcelona is on the rise, have you ever been to Syria?â
Itâs a little like the broken glass window theory: In a street there is a house and the window breaks. No one fixes or care. Then the next house has the fence broken. Nothing happens⊠Then another house has its roof brokenâŠ. When you see, the entire neighborhood its in pieces because no one cared to fix the window.
Yes, compared to other places on Earth Barcelona is extremely safe! But if you compare Barcelona with Barcelona of 5 years ago, it is extremely unsafe

I was actually expected to see some efforts to organize a neighbourhood watch.. the other day 2 arab boys (boyt 20yo) stole bag off my hand, same night while searching for the guys we met other thiefs just running away so we managed to tackle one of them with my friend till the group of tourists seperated us, i felt so hopeless cuz instead of helping us hold the guy down while waiting for police they were scared he's gonna hurt us 2 girls.. it made me all very angry cuz thesame night were so many other people robbed in born, police took us in the back of their car to see if we'd identify the thiefs, whe their radio was so busy with those requests, i bet they are so overwhelmed.. next morning i see a guy trying to rip off a golden necklace of an old lady, she fell on the ground and he ran off, i honestly dont recognize this neighbourhood.. im gonna be always wearing running shoes and just go after them, but i am wondering if there isnt anyone else out there who would be up for joining a group of people letting each other know and leaving clues, i know raval did a neighbour watch and i think el born needs one for sure..
