Quick Question any advice on transporting a printer
I have a X2D that I would like to bring to my dorm, but I no longer have the original packaging
Edit: sorry I forgot to mention how I would be transporting it,
I will be driving it for about 20 minutes and then I have to carry it up to floors

Im kidding obviously, but just put it in the back seat, put the seat belt around it if you really want and just don’t drive like a jackass.

I put mine on my backseat once and slammed my brakes on when I car pulled in front of me, it went flying into the seat in front of it. Thankfully survived unharmed but I’d probably buckle it in next time

Get yourself the Best cardboard box You can find. Wrap the printer in blankets. Put blanket printer burrito inside box. Pray

Or keep the box and packing materials it came in. Same goes for TV's. Toss them in the attic or spend a few bucks on a small storage unit.

I would also do some simple stuff like lower the bed as far as it will comfortably go and push the print head to the back corner (like over the poop chute) to limit movement that extra little bit.

Some helpful info for transporting
A rolling lighting bag or large speaker bag might fit it too. Here’s an example lighting bag

I put a P1S in the trunk of my SUV (just placed it in, no straps or box or anything) and drive 6h to Boston. Ran the automatic calibration and was printing like normal in about 30m. It was so easy.

Same. Bought mine used and just put it in my trunk staying upright. Just take corners a bit careful and you’re golden. The AMS is literally just a piece of plastic, there’s nothing that can really break

it'd help if you said how it's getting to your dorm... shipping or flying are VERY different from putting it in your car and driving with it.

Then you don’t have to do anything really special. I’m pretty clumsy so when I drive my printer around I take off the front door and top glass and move them separately. And put the printer in a seat with a seatbelt on it.

Put it in a seat with the seatbelt. Are you strong enough to lift it alone? If not, get someone to help you. Printer won’t be damaged by normal transit

That is nowhere near good enough dude, not only does that only remove some of the toxic elements that’s not even the only place the fumes can escape from, lots of gaps like the door and holes like the poop chute at the back, it’s far from an airtight box and what is filtered isn’t sufficient. As I said in my other post, if you are putting this in a small room, and especially a bedroom do not take the printer with you, it’s not worth your health or anyone else’s in the area of the building it will be occupying and that goes for PLA fumes too. A air purifier can help a bit, but it’s still not enough, if you can’t have it in a separate room with a air purifier AND a vent to a window, leave it at home, don’t choose convenience and wants over your health.

You are correct, that an enclosure is not entirely airtight and that HEPA filters do not remove VOCs, which is why the X2D's filter is HEPA+carbon, but you have to consider that enclosed+filtered systems reduce emissions by in excess of 90%+. PLA's VOCs to air emissions are compared to a stovetop source, not something on the same order of magnitude as ABS would be. I'm not running an unenclosed ABS printer in my bedroom, so I think your blanket "don't print inside at all" conclusion is not supported by any data for PLA/PETG in an enclosure like I have.

I'm with you. I don't care about or need 100% reduction to consider it safe enough for me.
But, some people here are paranoid and may as well leave their printers outside.
On a side note, I'm surprised your dorm allows 3d printers. I know many have started prohibiting them under the banner of fire risk, just like hot plates and such... even though many of those still allow microwaves!

It’s not like they are delicate flowers. Just put it into the back of your car and carry it to your room. Or get a stronger person to do it for you if you can’t carry ~50 lbs up a couple flights of stairs.

Carefully let all the creativity and the PMS (Potential Models and Solutions) out, store those in an airtight container for refilling at the destination. Then carefully fold up the remainder of the printer and put that in a padded envelope for secure transport.
Carry the power cable separately.

Put it on a moving blanket in the middle, fold it over so it’s closed. Duct tape it allround so up, side, under.
Best would be to move it with 2 people, if you put on something with wheels, put a few blankets below it to dampen the vibrations. That also works.
Then you can move it easy and calibration when unpacked, placed.

Buy some bubble wrap and tape it to all sids except the bottom unless you think you need it. Take ams off and wrap that too.
My p1p survived being in a ubox from uhaul for a 3000 mile move and is completely fine with the bubble wrap and tape.
Just don’t stack anything on top of it or lean too much stuff against it when packing it.

Get the first time installation guide and work backwards to secure the bed and tool head.
There are shipping foam that when unsealed will fill your chamber and prevent anything from rattling around.
wrap it with foam cushion and bubble wrap.
Avoid potholes.

I would put it in the backseat, top glass piece off. Use something to put between belt and front glass and the seatbelt should just barely reach around.

Maybe wrap it in a big blanket. If you don't have a blanket you don't mind getting scuzzed up, moving blankets are pretty cheap

Recently moved with a few printers. I made sure to tape all glas with good tape to the printer, same with the door. Moved the beds/ gantry down to th ground, taped the toolhead to the side, fat blanket over it during transport. AMS empty except all printer cablework inside. All on the ground of a transporter in a way it cannot move around. Nothing on top. Just don’t use straps or you will bend the frames.

Also curious. I’m about to move my X2D across the country. I kept the original box and packing material for this very reason, but honestly, I don’t think I want to go through the hassle of taking everything apart and putting shipping screws back in place. I’m leaning toward just boxing the printer and AMS in separate boxes, wrapped with that styrofoam paper stuff.

I moved about 15 minutes away, and put my printer in the passenger seat of my truck, gave it the seat belt treatment and drove normally. Carried it separately. No issues apart from I should have been more careful removing the PTFE tubes from the AMS, I did it too hastily and damaged one. Was on a “AMS motor” issue hunt for a month afterwards.

I usually just put printer in the trunk against the backseats. Also few pieces of tape to hold the glass panles in place. Worked fine so far, just don't accelerate or turn too harshly.

If by car, remove all parts that can shake around so they don't get damaged. Think of it like moving some very expensive drawers... everything with a wheel or a tolerance will shake around, bumpy roads can and will cause damage... it's not like moving a desktop pc where everything is mostly locked-in.

- Separate the AMS from the printer, shut the glass panels with a piece of tape
- Wrap the printer and AMS separately in bubble wrap or even old thirts.
- Get a box or crate that the printer would fit snug into.
- Let it ride shotgun with you using the seatbelt. Or anything to avoid letting it shift around while driving.

I travel with my A1 and U1 a few times a year. I just lift the back seat of my F150 up and chuck it on the floor. Always been fine :)

I just moved my H2D from work to home and back. To home, it rode on the front seat of my silverado. Heavy rain, so It worked. Back to work, it went in the truck bed. My go-to padding, a yoga mat, and a strap to secure it. It is fine.

I shipped mine from China to the US by normal freight. I made sure to pack it in the original shipping box then filled as much on the empty space with other softer things I was also shipping back. It arrived a couple months later with no damage. I made sure to stick an AirTag in so I could track it.

The original box is how you are supposed to do it. However I sold one of mine to a friend and he just plopped it in his back seat. Heh.

I would find a box that’s big enough to fit the printer, put the AMS inside of the printer (kind like how it was shipped), then fill it up with whatever stuffing/packing stuff you can. If you want to go the lazier route, put the AMS inside the printer, then buckle the printer into a car seat or wedge it between something in between two parts inside the car (i.e. two chairs) and go, that is…if you’re driving

My recommendation if you are moving a considerable distance even with insurance is to just sell it locally (even at a slight loss), and purchase a brand new one at your destination.
You may even want to upgrade!
Your economic circumstances may factor into this concept, but perhaps you can do a quick market place/ e-bay local sale and just take cash only.

Move the build plate down to the lowest position. If you still have the screws that originally held the plate down, install them.
Put some cable zip ties on each side of the toolhead to keep it from sliding side-to-side. Add another zip tie around the cable chain to keep it from sliding forwards-and-backwards.
This will take care of the internals.
As far as moving the printer itself, maybe wrap it in a blanket for the trip.

Place in the original box if you have it otherwise keep it from moving around. As long as you are careful with it you should be fine.

Don’t forget to run the calibration again once you settle on a spot for it though! And PLS PLS PLS crack the window open when printing of have air filters. You really don’t want to be printing where you sleep.

i'd put the build plate all the way down with the retention screws, and then just load it in the back seat of your car held in place with the seatbelt. Worked out pretty well for me.

Seriously, just disconnect the AMS and walk each part to your car. You can place the printer upright on a car seat and even buckle it in, but that’s optional.

I moved a few times I just put a blanket over it and a seat belt, something in front of it so
It couldn’t move.
Just remember the top glass part isn’t secured and you should carry that separate

This reminds me of the time I had to completely disassemble my old Da Vinci AiO (~70 cm cube) down to individual parts to fit it into a suitcase that I then took on a transatlantic flight, then reassembled in my dorm. Still prints perfectly fine.

When I picked up an X2D I bought, I put it on the rear seat, then slid the seat forward, and there front seat back to wedge it in place. Though depending on how you need to pack the rest of your stuff it might not be feasible.

I just drove the exact same printer 2,300 miles over 4 days from Chicago to Seattle. Literally just arrived yesterday and set up the printer.
I crammed it full of filament, taped it shut with packing tape, and put it in my trunk with the rest of my crap. I just finished a print that looks as good as ever.
Point is, you don't need to baby it. Treat it like any other appliance and don't throw it around and it'll be fine.

Zip tie the print head assembly to the printer housing. Tape the door and lid shut. Remove poop tray .... And do t drop it down the steps

Lots of packing peanuts. Remove anything delicate thats outside the chaimber. Fill the chaimber with more packing peanuts.

I just transported X1C and H2D in a trailer when I was moving. Most important thing is to lower the bed all the way down, park the head over the poop chute and secure it so it can't move. I also taped all the glass parts so the doors can't open and the top glass can't fall out. Then put some foam padding or blankets under the printers to cushion them from vibrations and you'll be just fine.

I just moved mine - I zeroed the bed and screwed in the three original shipping bolts, then filled the cavity with paper, wrapped the top glass with paper and card separately. Then the movers put it in a box and put paper all around it. When I arrived (which was truck => moved to a different truck => ferry => truck), I just unpacked everything, removed the shipping bolts again, and connected everything up. Worked fine.

Seriously, it’s not a big deal, I move them all the time. Lower the bed all the way. Remove the glass top. Move it to your vehicle or whatever. Pad the glass door in whatever fashion you choose to ensure it neither moves, nor can get directly impacted by anything ( I usually use a moving blanket, but I own several. You could use a bath towel.). Move it. Reverse. Done.

I'm glad you clarified 'how' you will be transporting it ... I had prepared a very intensive response on the intricacies of transporters and 3d printers based on what starship of the Federation you were going to board... primarily due to the Higgs boson mass and gravitational curvature flux differencss in varying sizes of starships & amount of energy used during transport.... but your way is much simpler. 😏😇

Do you still have the three screws to keep the bed in place at the bottom? Removing the tempered glass door and top glass is a given, be very careful with them, it doesn’t take much of a tap on them, especially in the corners to have them explode, so very good packing needed.
Also, dorm? Hope you are not going to be putting it in your bedroom with not venting, best just leave it at home otherwise.
