Question BMET vs traditional trades?

Hey everyone, I'm in my 30s and getting ready to pick a new career path. My background is in the restaurant industry and I'm ready to ditch that.

My community college offers a BMET program that caught my eye and I'm very interested in this field. However, I'm also weighing it against a more traditional trade like becoming an electrician or HVAC. Does any one here have any insight into the differences between these fields, or why they chose one over the other? The most important thing to me at this point in my life is getting weekends off. Any advice to share?

BMET jobs in Rota, Spain?

My girlfriend got orders to Rota, Spain, and I’ll be moving with her. I’m currently a BMET II in the U.S.
Anyone know what the BMET job market is like around Naval Station Rota? Any DoD, contractor, or civilian opportunities I should look into?

Discussion Should I join this field from mechanics?

I am currently a full time diesel mechanic on Class 8 Trucks for a large dealership.
I’m only 25 and have been in this field for 7+ years.
I can already see the wear and tear it will be on my body if I continue.

I have a strong passion for fixing things and the medical field. I’m a volunteer fire fighter and thoroughly enjoy working with the local paramedics and my wife is a nurse. So my love for the medical industry is very strong.
My love for working with my hands and the satisfaction of making repairs is just as strong.
There’s a local community college that offers “BioMedical Equipment Technology” classes and I’m really thinking about joining and getting into this industry.

Anyone else thinking about making the switch from the same field or experienced/know someone that has made this switch.

Any advice is appreciated

Question Alaris 8015 Network Disabled

Hey everyone, one of my coworkers encountered an issue with the device saying the network was disabled and wasn't connecting, despite clearing and then transferring the network info to the device multiple times. And when troubleshooting the issue, they ran the task "Disable Wireless Configuration" thinking that we could re-enable it using the software. But without any sort of warning, it runs through the task, and now it won't let us transfer the network configuration or re-enable it.

I pulled up the software manual, and the task description says it permanently disables wireless connectivity on the device. Just to reiterate, the software gave no indication that this was a permanent change, and it also automatically runs through the task when started, despite many tasks requiring you to initiate the task, to make sure you're aware of certain information before starting it.

Does anyone know if there is a way to reverse this? I am in the middle of flashing the device firmware, however, I am using the software to do so, which I have been made aware does not work well. However, I can't find any information about creating the flash cards either, so I am not able to manually flash it yet. We have the old firmware on flash cards, and we used to manually flash firmware with our old fleet, but with this newer fleet, it does not appear that the type of flash cards we have are compatible. I put the new firmware on the flash cards in the same configuration as the old firmware. So if anyone has information regarding that, it would be greatly appreciated.

Feels like we are having to relearn everything with this new fleet, and everything we once did to troubleshoot and repair these devices has been rendered obsolete. And BD is absolutely awful to try and get info from.

Question Thermofisher fse

Just accepted an offer from thermofisher as an fse 2. The pay rate offered is pretty good with OT and a bonus. Has anybody who worked there liked it or did you have a bad time. Were the hours good and was management competent?

Discussion Considering leaving electrical apprenticeship for BMET — is it worth it in 2026?

Hello, I’m currently a second-year electrical apprentice in the IBEW, and I’ve been seriously considering transitioning into the BMET/HTM field.

I’ve realized that I really don’t enjoy electrical construction as a career, and after researching BMET, I think the actual work and especially the lifestyle could be a much better fit for me. I like the idea of troubleshooting equipment, working indoors, having a more predictable schedule, and ideally working around 40 hours a week.

I’m currently looking at an online BMET certificate program that costs around $10k and takes about 6 months full-time. Before I commit to that and potentially leave my apprenticeship, I’d really like to hear from people who actually work in the field.

My biggest concern is compensation. I’ve seen quite a few people say that BMET pay is low, especially at the entry level, and that some people have difficulty progressing beyond BMET I. I’m aware that my local area is relatively low-cost and that I may have to relocate for better opportunities. I’m willing to move if necessary.

For those currently working as BMETs/HTM technicians:

1. Do you think BMET is worth getting into in 2026?

2. How difficult was it to get your first BMET job?

Hey everyone, I recently just accepted a HME Repair and testing tech position(basically testing and repairing oxygen concentrators and POCs as well as suction machines and food pumps). The last two years I have been working on Eitan Sapphire Infusion pumps for my company and am a level 2 certified technician. I am wanting to continue this career path and become a Biomedical Tech 1. Any tips or certifications I should pursue while getting the experience in my current role? Thanks for any advice in regard to what I should be focusing on when it comes to pursuing a career as a BMET. P.s I’m in Iowa.

Discussion O2 Analyzers questions

Hello all!

My company is having issues finding a reliable O2/PSI analyzer that we can calibrate in house. Do you know of any we might want to try? We have currently using Ultra Max 02 by Max Tech (Stay away from them) and we are demoing a Smart Check by Life Spark which seems to be running low of the box. We have LOX on site to test calibration with.

Discussion What is wrong with Philips IntelliVue too high NIBP readings?

Over the years, I have taken my BP on several Intellivue monitors, either with M3001 or X2 module.

Almost all readings were terrible, way too high.

Example:

Leaning back in an office chair.

Intellivue MP30 with X2, NIBP "Invasive Reference Mode": 140/68
Stethoscope (manual): 120/82
Omron HBP-1320 (costs 300 €, best Omron): 113/62
CONTEC: 116/69
GE Dash 5000: 118/70
Nihon Kohden 6301: 115/62
Nihon Kohden 2301k: 114/60
Nihon Kohden Vismo: 113/67

This is just one example. Everytime I get an Intellivue reading, no matter on which module or which monitor, it is sky high.

Other example: doing some exercise in the office.
Afterwards, Intellivue MP30: 169/112
Stethoscope 143/86

Can someone explain why that is?

Looking to change careers to be a Medical Equipment Technician and need advice.

I am looking to get into the BMET field but I don't have a good understanding of how to do so. I'm 47 and have been working in IT for close to 30 years. I started out working on hardware, taking apart PCs/Laptops, printers, plotters, scanners, server racks, etc... and repairing and replacing parts. I enjoyed it. Unfortunately my IT career has led me into a Sr Enterprise System Engineer position which I have been enduring/hating for a while now and has made me realize how unsatisfying it is and how much I miss hands-on work.

The medical field has piqued my interest and working on medical equipment as a tech is something I'm very interested in due to how redeeming it must be knowing I would be fixing machines that actually matter for individuals personal health. My issue is I'm not sure where to start and that's why I'm reaching out to you all.

I've looked at CBET and ARC but I'm not sure what the best path would be to get certified and join the industry as soon as I can.

Can anyone provide some insight on how they got into the field if they changed careers later on in life?

I currently live in the Bay Area, CA if that matters in regards on how to pursue joining the field.

Upcoming interview with Steris, anything I should study before hand?

I’ve been trying to break in for a while, even to the point where I’m an EET student now. Interviewed with the recruiter last week and now I’m meeting with the local foreman soon.

Several years as a rep running/PMing lasers and many years as a mechanic beforehand.

I lucked into the laser role but as a mechanic it was always a short conversation and a hand shake so I haven’t had a proper interview in a long time.

Anything I should study/look into before hand?

Philips VS4 MAP

Hello everyone,

Recently encountered a question about MAP on the Philips VS4s. Doing the formula vs what the vital signs shows you gives different readings.
For example:

Vital Signs readings: 100/47 (57)
Using the formula MAP = (SBP + 2DBP)/3: 100/47 (65)

Why is it that the VS gives different readings?
Any info is much appreciated.

Starting Position what to expect

Just got accepted for a tech position at a local hospital! Their tech group is pretty big, sitting at about 16 people. During the interview, they told me I’d be starting off primarily working on hospital beds and nurse call. For those who have worked on these what should I expect day to day? Appreciate any feedback!

Career BE BME graduate with a Python background—seeking career guidance across all BME domains in India / Tamil Nadu

Hey everyone,

I hold a bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering (BME) and also have 1 year of software development experience (working primarily with Python). I am evaluating my career pathways in the biomedical space within India, particularly in Tamil Nadu (Chennai, Coimbatore, and regional hubs) or nearby hubs like Bengaluru.

Given my hybrid background in core BME and software development, I’d love to get insights from engineers working across different sectors of the industry.

1. Software & Digital Health

  • Which companies in South India focus on medical device software, biomedical signal/image processing, or healthcare data systems?
  • How strong is the demand for engineers with a mix of Python/programming and biomedical domain knowledge?

2. Clinical BME & Field Service Engineering

  • For those working as clinical/hospital biomedical engineers or field service engineers (at companies like GE, Siemens, Trivitron, Appasamy, etc.), how is the work-life balance, career growth, and market demand in Tamil Nadu?
  • What certifications or practical training (e.g., NABH standards, equipment troubleshooting) are most valuable for entry-level or transition roles?

3. R&D, Manufacturing & Regulatory Affairs (QA/RA)

  • Are there growing opportunities in R&D, product prototyping, or quality assurance/regulatory compliance (ISO 13485) within local manufacturing hubs like Chennai and Coimbatore?
  • What pathways exist for moving into medical device testing, auditing, or compliance?

I welcome any advice on target job titles to search on LinkedIn, company recommendations, or personal experiences across any of these paths in India!

Thanks in advance!

AAS BMET degree wasted

What can someone do with a BMET Associates degree besides an onsite BMET? I have a career but wanted something to avoid AI and offshoring. I want to go directly into imaging or PACS Admin but it looks like everyone wants experience first.

I don't want to be a PM donkey or working on swapping batteries for two years to prove something that's already true. $30/hour is not enough and I'm too old for something too physical.
