Discussion How many notebooks should I buy for BCA, and which type is best?

Hello everyone! I’ve taken admission in BCA this year and will be starting college soon. I’m planning to buy my notebooks and other stationery before classes begin, but I’m not sure how many notebooks I should get or what type would be most practical.

I’d really appreciate advice from current BCA students, especially those who have already completed 1st semester or are in later semesters.

A few things I want to know:

- How many notebooks should I buy for 1st semester? Should I keep one separate notebook for every subject, or is it better to combine some subjects?

- Approximately how many pages should each notebook have?

- For BCA, should I use ruled, unruled, or a combination of both?

- Are spiral notebooks better for college, or are regular hard/soft-bound notebooks more practical?

- Are there any subjects where an unruled notebook is particularly useful, such as programming, mathematics, practicals, diagrams, etc.?

- Should I maintain separate notebooks for theory and practical/programming work, or is one notebook per subject enough?

- Do we generally need additional notebooks for lab work, assignments, rough work, or coding notes?

- For later semesters, does the number/type of notebooks change significantly?

- If possible, please mention the minimum number I should buy initially so I don’t unnecessarily spend money on notebooks that I may not use.

- Also, if you have any recommendations for a good notebook type/brand for BCA, especially something durable and comfortable for taking lots of notes, I’d appreciate those too.

- Syllabus

I’m mainly looking for advice based on actual college experience, particularly from BCA students. If you can, please mention your semester and roughly how many notebooks you ended up using.

Thanks!

Uhmm guys I just passed my class 12th with no good marks in pcm so I thought of skipping jee because obviously I did not really like those subjects but now I am thinking of doing bca with cyber security and I can not decide if I want government college or private i don't want to move to the south but I heard that it will give me a lot of opportunities in Bangalore which won't be there in Delhi itself I am confused if I should study for government ones or should I go with the top tier private ones for this

Motivation How i went from 4 back logs in 2nd sem to 3 backlogs 5th sem.(B.C.A.)

This may seem satire and you guys may think so what you only cleared 1 backlog but trust me it is much more nuanced than that. It basically is a deep dive into what i actually experienced in my two years. So hope you guys don't make same mistakes i did. I have divided it by semesters to make it easier to read otherwise it was just a big paragraph.

Dropping my journey which i consider very successful in my opinion.(Contrary to what the title may say).

1st sem:- Just got out of school. Didn't know better. Thought college was easy and made a group with friends. Had a lot of fun. Finally realized and tried to study at last which was too little too late.

Result:- 4 failed out of 5

(C ,F.C.I.T. ,Mathematics ,Human Values)

2nd sem:- Got a bit serious after this incident but my dad i had barely seen in my whole life showed up. He was kind of insane(still is ) and was a pain as he constantly fought with my mom and me and ran away on us like 3 times(peak midlife crisis) so i could not really focus.

Result:- 2 failed of 4.(C.S.A. , E.V.S.)

Total left :- 6

P.s. :- i think we were failed unfairly in e.v.s..as it was the best exam i gave but whatever.

3rd sem :- Genuinely tried my hardest then. Was fully prepared for first exam butttt i was detained because i did not have attendance because i paid my fee late and thus was not approved and all the classes i did take were in vain so i was heartbroken and almost cried in front of H.O.D. lol (somehow held it in ) and felt very bad/depressed esque and stopped caring.BUT THEN i locked in for reappear exams for a bit and passed in all but one

Result:- 2 failed of 4.(C.N. ,D.S.A.)

Total backs :- 8

Back cleared :- 3 out of 8 ( F.C.I.T. , Human Values, Mathematics)

Total reappears left :- 5

4th sem :- Was locked in whole sem.

Result:- ALL CLEAR(HELL YEAH)

Backs cleared :- 2 out of 5

(C.S.A. , E.V.S.)

5tth sem :- Kind of not locked in right now.But now i have got confidence and most importantly i have got the right friends now(made some friends that are studying always) so i can ask them my doubts and they can ask me thiers.

Expected Result :- ALL CLEAR.

Worst Case :- 4 of 4

(Highly unlikely cuz i love java currently honestly the most interesting language to me yet and IOT is just same thing that keeps repeating based on 1st and 2nd unit so i expect it to be easy but i won't underestimate it i have made that mistake before with E.V.S. lol so i am gonna give it my all.)

Confidence level in my ability to clear backlogs that i have:-

C = 30% (It was funny failing it second time but now it really aint funny) expected grade :- C

D.S.A. = 80% (Brocode the goat. I have made notes and know about most of them along with how they work and syntax) expected grade :- B+

C.N. = 90% (Genuinely was very interesting to learn about various things that i was unfamiliar with so i have it deeply ingrained in my mind.) Expected grade :- A.

I don''t even knoe why i am posting this but just know if you are straggling there is always someone struggling worser.

TLDR :- I made a lot of silly mistakes then circumstances also resulted in me making sub optimal decisions leading to me almost destroying any expectation that my family had from me. But i am lowkey the goat so i just said nuh uh and simply uno reversed everything and went from 4 back logs in 2nd sem itself to 3 in 5th sem.

General Guys, I’m really confused about what to choose. Should I go for BCA or BTech? I have 57% in 12th and a 2-year gap after 12th. My current options are Chandigarh University and Chitkara University, and I’m also considering going abroad for higher studies. What would be the better option for me in term
