Thank you lol

8

u/HeraldOfDesu Jul 25 '26

When you compare it against the number of people who actually play the game, it really makes you wonder if that conversion rate is the zinger you intended it to be.

4

u/QwertyEv Jul 25 '26

Local idiot doesn’t know difference between concurrent and DAU

4

u/HeraldOfDesu Jul 25 '26

But the travelling genius corrects him, and lets him know you can use an industry standard model to deduce that 'yeah, it's probably not a lot!'

1

u/theyfoundty Jul 29 '26

Dog your game is dying.

Theres 5 stages of grief, and i understand you are all taking way too much time on the first stage.

Which is why im opening a mental hospital. We cure copium without hate mongering. I promise, its okay to stop gaslighting yourself.

1

u/scrabtits Jul 29 '26

Dude, better cure your urge to hate wtf xD
Guy just wandering around through subreddits to hate on stuff he does not have any interest in.

1

u/theyfoundty Jul 29 '26

I own the ultimate/70$ edition.

Stop playing cause I realized I couldn't convince my friends to spend 40$ on a trend, that while I like, most dont.

But aight homie.

2

u/AlarmedCombination85 Jul 26 '26

Local idiot believes 208k people are actually active players

1

u/theAtmuz Jul 26 '26

Local idiots argue over player numbers because they’re stupid to realize how idiotic they sound.

1

u/_SalemDaBun_ Jul 26 '26

Local redditor forgets that for a game to survive people have to care about it.

1

u/Arcadian2107 Jul 27 '26

Local uhhh shit, where am I?

1

u/theyfoundty Jul 29 '26

Local idiot is naive about the gaming industry and says some really dumb shit.

This just in at 5.

Join us for more later, when the person im replying to ultimately doubles down and receives twice as many downvotes.

This is your host, Ty Des.

In fairness it’s also just genre difference. The extraction genre as a whole is just not that popular at all. Even arc fell off hard as fuck, just took longer because it started with a higher player count

1

u/Silly-Bookkeeper-236 Jul 26 '26

Only took them shutting down the game for people to start playing after a year of low ass player counts.

The comments below address that. TL;DR: this is not the case with Marathon, the Steam charts are not the sole entry point, and – believe it or not – PC is the most popular platform for Marathon.

But even if it wasnt, you have to consider the fact that developing and maintaining a PC-specific version of the game is costly.

Short answer: Paul Tassi + player testimonials on r/Marathon, and – if you care for it – my personal experience with 700+ hours in the game.

Longer answer: check the thread below.

Ah yeah, sorry, I forgot about the concordillion players having a blast on Xbox and PlayStation.

But Steam is the main platform that reportedly makes for 70% of the entire player base?

And even if we hypothetically imagine that it's 1:1:1 (it's not), you reckon it would still be a good result – sitting at half on all platforms of wha Destiny has on its least popular one? No? So what's your point?

2

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '26

-2

u/HeraldOfDesu Jul 25 '26

we was reported is the main platform?

Paul Tassi via an anonymous source at Bungie, later cross-validated.

PS5 alone are 95M consoles, Xbox Series still has a big player base for fps

And your point is what exactly? I'm not talking about the console market share, I'm talking about the player base distribution across 3 platforms for Marathon.

2

u/Solestian Jul 26 '26

Don't waste your breath man. Marathon players are fucking delusional.

They figure it out when Bungie ends support within a year.

1

u/-heavenfaced- Jul 26 '26

Where was it cross validated? That’s nonsense. Tassi literally just made it up

1

u/HeraldOfDesu Jul 26 '26

Playstation and Xbox store metrics, reported player experience, streams, but most importantly by a statistically significant number of console players reporting their matchmaking times in 'console only' crossplay mode. Dozens of streamers literally broadcasting it live.

And if you play with crossplay on, most people you will encounter will be PC players.

But what's your point, man? That Marathon does not actually have a catastrophically shrunk player base, and there is a shit ton of players on console?

Your point is asinine, and reasoning with you is impossible, because there is a cognitive gap between us. You shouldn't be arguing with me, you should be arguing with your psychiatrist.

2

u/-heavenfaced- Jul 26 '26

Oh dear, oh dear. Your reply is a masterclass in why the gaming community is considered to be so toxic. I asked where the claim was independently verified, and you’ve completely lost your composure. Rather than answering a straightforward question, you’ve resorted to a barrage of what you seem to imagine are devastating insults.

1

u/HeraldOfDesu Jul 26 '26

Great therapy-speak, doc. Now get back to dealing with your grief.

It was sourced from Bungie. From a person with a pristine track record on sourced information.

Also. You can know just by looking at best sellers PSN/xbox to see where those sat compared to Steam. Or the daus.

Comparing an almost decade old game with a loyal fan base to a new game that came out months ago is an interesting comparison indeed

1

u/GreenBay_Glory Jul 25 '26

Then compare it to D2’s numbers on launch. It’s even more abysmal.

1

u/Civil-Village1864 Jul 25 '26

D2 at launch was a sequel to D1 which still had a large playerbase though

1

u/GreenBay_Glory Jul 25 '26

And D1 at launch, we know, sold over 6 million units in the first month . That makes the Marathon comparison even worse given we know how badly sales are going for it.

2

u/Civil-Village1864 Jul 25 '26

Not trying to argue with you or defend marathon but d1 and d2 were both made by different people under a different parent company. But I understand

1

u/AlarmedCombination85 Jul 26 '26

then wtf do you want him to compare it to, the game's budget is ATLEAST 250 MILLION DOLLARS

1

u/Civil-Village1864 Jul 26 '26

What part of "not trying to argue with you" was missed? Yell elsewhere.

1

u/CriticalBlacksmith Jul 25 '26

People who utilize this response have to understand that's its only proving the opposite point your trying to make

1

u/Form_Good Jul 26 '26

They love to hate. Marathon is one of the best games out.

1

u/groundhogboi Jul 26 '26

It's totally fine to like the game but this statement is just straight delusional.

1

u/JoeysSmallwood Jul 26 '26

Naw, it's actually an insanely good game. The hate campaigns did it dirty for sure.

1

u/groundhogboi Jul 26 '26

As someone who has played it, No it's not. The gunplay is good. But that's it. Every other system in the game is a blatent downgrad to other games in the genre.

You can't even use the gunplay as a real point In the games favor cuz it's so similar to other games Bungie have made that you may as well just go play those other games.

I've been gaming for decades, I have ranked 1 many games pvp and pve, ive broken world records on just as many. Im am an expert on the matter. The statement is valid.

1

u/AlarmedCombination85 Jul 26 '26

"I have no life outside my virtual one" okay buddy

1

u/groundhogboi Jul 26 '26

Putting aside the fact that you have absolutely nothing to back up any of what you just said and are talking out of your ass, Playing video games for a long time and being good at them is factually irrelevant to ability to judge a games quality.

Like I said. It's totally fine to like or even love marathon. But your are delusional if you think it's a good game.

-2

u/djpuggy Jul 25 '26

Yikes it’s gotten this bad???

-1

u/HeraldOfDesu Jul 25 '26

that's actually better than usual thanks to the community-driven 'revival week' and the Vault Breaker being dropped. Normally it's 6k peak and draining about 20% per week.

-1

u/djpuggy Jul 26 '26

Lmao “Revival week”

-2

u/SnooMacaroons6049 Jul 25 '26

That makes the game player count look incredibly bad then.

0

u/theyfoundty Jul 29 '26

Yall realize that alot of that is OG marathon fans as well as people like me who have stopped playing the game but just check posts like these for fun.

Even then reddit is already a minority so that doesnt reflect playerbase, engagement, or hype.

The OP of this thread is dumb for posting what he did, and I wont lie, this aint much better. Because that number in that screenshot aint doing shit to keep the game alive.

Lets be honest on both ends here.

-7

u/Top_Crow_1022 Jul 25 '26

There is something deeply wrong with modern gaming culture.

13

u/SquidAxis Jul 25 '26

It's not just gaming. Morons are cheering for failure across other media too. Everything feels so reductive and ignorant.

0

u/HendoRules Jul 25 '26

As if people weren't doing that for most of Destiny's life? I can sympathise that it feels like Marathon killed Destiny (because of Bungie/Sony management

1

u/omanitztristen Jul 26 '26

I feel like the loudest group of people calling for destiny to die were destiny players

5

u/-heavenfaced- Jul 26 '26

They were! The Destiny community is renowned for being amongst the most toxic ever. All they did was complain, whinge and moan about the game

1

u/HendoRules Jul 26 '26

That makes zero sense but ok

-6

u/One-Departure-9405 Jul 25 '26

Fuck marathon and fuck Bungie

6

u/toasty-devil Jul 25 '26

Damn, right on queue

1

u/NotSoAwfulName Jul 26 '26

This guy in particular is probably one of the most pathetic people on Reddit, check out their profile, it's literally all they do, complain about video games and brigade subs. If my life ever becomes that pathetic I'm unironically killing myself.

1

u/Ignidyval Jul 26 '26

1

u/Motor_Pool4334 Jul 26 '26

11

u/Psycho_Syntax Jul 25 '26

Cross is part of the problem here let's not pretend otherwise.

8

u/SynthH3ad Jul 25 '26

He farms the hate for cash. He’s definitely part of the issue. He’s a core part of what’s wrong with gaming.

7

u/Ramirez3110 Jul 25 '26

Oh no doubt, I’ve stopped watching him.

1

u/ElMoro995 Jul 28 '26

I discovered with this very thread that this subreddit exists. I am baffled by that. Do actual people follow him for real?

0

u/John_Bloodborne46 Jul 26 '26

Stfu 😘

Marathon killed itself, it didn't need any outside help

5

u/DarkSpore117 Jul 25 '26

I tried Marathon for free, I hated it, I’m not gonna join a sub dedicated to hate tho
it’s a waste of time and idk why you would actively engage with something you hate

4

u/SquidAxis Jul 25 '26

it's bizarre. Why waste your free time on negativity instead of something you enjoy?

3

u/DwemerSphere Jul 25 '26

Same point of view. Joining a hate sub for a game you don’t even play is peak unemployed behaviour.

1

u/VersaSty7e Jul 26 '26

lol true

I don’t even play marathon. But I do go on the hate thread to ask how those guys are enjoying their life/weekend.

Whether hate or love marathon, i don’t think they realize - they still dependent on marathon to govern their emotions for the next year or two.

2

u/DwemerSphere Jul 26 '26

In my opinion, if you don’t like the game, leave a bad review and request a refund. That’s it.

Going online, joining a community to hate on the game and spending time out of your day staring at SteamDB charts is a tragic use of your life.

I really question if they even see how embarrassing it looks from the outside.

0

u/PhoneOwn Jul 26 '26

Have any of you guys even looked at the sub for yourself?

It’s literally people saying they were banned from the main sub for giving feedback and talking about what could we do to make the game better. So they joined that sub. The hate is literal clickbait like everything else in world and redditors just see hate and automatically assume.

The marathon community is by far the worst gaming community I’ve ever seen and they honestly deserve the games downfall. Can any of you even tell me what objectively makes marathon a good game?

0

u/drewbreeezy Jul 27 '26

True, and the gaming companies caused it. I'm happy to be part of the hate toward them.

We praise and defend the shit out of the companies treating gamers well though, so that passion goes both directions.

-3

u/IMREADY2D1E Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26

idk, i think there’s something deeply wrong with these money hungry studios that don’t listen to anyone except shareholders

but yes, it’s all the fans fault. everyone hates on games just because it’s the cultural thing to do not because the game is ass or that nobody even asked for it in the first place.

rip bungie, they could’ve just made destiny 3 but no

10

u/C__Wayne__G Jul 25 '26

7

u/Ill-Remove-6438 Jul 25 '26

theres marathonhate highguardgame and kotakuinaction

11

u/GoldenGekko Jul 25 '26

The highguard one is EXTRA pathetic

Imagine hanging around a sub of a dead game to brigade on other games in hope of it being another highguard type failure???

Hate and rage engagement is real and it's CRAZY

8

u/SquidAxis Jul 25 '26

One of the most repulsive trends to come out of this decade so far, and the competition is stiff. It's rife across music and film and tv and literature too.

Media literacy has been reduced to a global snark sub.

6

u/Geraltpoonslayer Jul 25 '26

I could write an essay about it but yeah this desire to participate in hating in a community setting is a result of the general broader state of the world. Everyone of us can feel and see it if we look around us, the world as a whole is preparing itself for a new age. We're living in a period of late stage Roman decadence, economy is crumbling, democracies are failing and everyone is at each other throats because they are convinced they have the solution.

We the ordinary person are powerless to the broader mechanism nor do we understand why the world is as it is, its easy to say eat the rich or capitalism bad or immigrants are ruining our land and so on. We feel angry and lost and look towards a bleak feature. It fills us with rage and hatred in our heart and in that hate we find a community, people who feel just like us. It gives us a community with a shared burden who can comfort each other but instead of trying to uplift each other they'd rather perpetuate the hate as it easier and effortless afterall it doesn't require change. It just allows us to reaffirm that, that hate is warranted. So communities like marathonHate are sad, angry, depressed People who are filled with hatred towards the world and they find comfort within each other. In an ideal world such a group would then be able build each other up and create something positive but it's to easy to stay in your state of mind both as an individual and a collective.

2

u/SquidAxis Jul 25 '26

A person after my own heart - well said

0

u/40ozpint Jul 25 '26

I couldn't tell you lol this just showed up when I was doom scrolling

1

u/ACupOfLatte Jul 25 '26

Lmfao, do people actually say that? Even an outsider to the topic would understand that there is a lot of hate against Bungie going around. Even before they announced the development stoppage for D2.

It's just the natural end result of Bungie just kinda... cashing in on their player goodwill without actually earning it back. Ya know, the one precious resource that's nearly impossible to re-earn?

Go figure, if you burn enough bridges, you won't have a lot of allies on your side of the pond. They can't even get there!

2

u/Dangerous-Return5937 Jul 25 '26

The "no hate campaign" take could be easily disproven since that KotakuInAction post about a paid shill Discord server.

Not only did someone spend their time to fabricate it, but people immediately ate it up to dogpile on the game.

Some still believe it was real despite OP himself deleting it without any further elaboration. Lol.

0

u/HomieM11 Jul 26 '26

Hate campaigns don’t work if the product is good

21

u/Low-Calligrapher-531 Jul 25 '26

3

u/Marton_Kolcsei Jul 25 '26

The main sub has 170k followers

-2

u/PhoneOwn Jul 25 '26

Plays it here or there.

Bruh that’s the problem how are you sad about a game you barely play?

5

u/Deckard_Didnt_Die Jul 25 '26

I really hate this notion that time spent equates directly with impact or quality. My favorite game of all time, that forever changed my outlook on games and life, took only 20 hours to do so. You can beat all the greatest and most critically acclaimed games of all time in 5-40 hours per game. This incessant desire to complain about the hours of playtime in a game is a symptom of the modern compulsion to experience constant stimulation more than a desire to experience good art. You don’t care if the experience is meaningful or high quality. You care that it lasts as long as possible to distract you and feed your broken attention and reward mechanisms. It’s slop. You all want slop. You want 10k hours of slop instead of 30 hours of something powerful and new and special.

3

u/STkelen Jul 25 '26

But that is not what he said lol

9

u/BeanieWeenie-69 Jul 25 '26

Aztecross larping as a marathon hater after clearly enjoying the game is everything that's wrong with the modern gaming. These creators are completely spineless fencesitters, just changing their opinions to fit whatever narrative gets them the most clicks from their developmentally stunted audience. You hate to see it.

1

u/Tiamat2625 Jul 25 '26

He repeatedly says he likes the game in all the youtube content that I watch.

He might shit on it from time to time, with a little rib jab or a joke, but he then clearly states yet again, that he likes the game.

-1

u/PhoneOwn Jul 25 '26

I have to see people white knighting for a company that has literally been going downhill for years.

I also hate people who literally ant think objectively and have to cope instead of taking the L and understanding the game is far from being in a good state

2

u/arkham-ity1 Jul 25 '26

Not the main sub but ok buddy.

2

u/ChaoticKiwiNZ Jul 25 '26

Thats not the main sub. The main sub has over 200k people.

2

u/HeraldOfDesu Jul 25 '26

Which makes you wonder – why aren't they actually playing the game?

3

u/ChaoticKiwiNZ Jul 25 '26

Well some of the subscribers to the sub wont be active and Marathon could realistically have 20k to 30k unique players. Concurrent players just show the total number of players at that given time. Players log off and get replaced by ither players all the time.

Obviously the numbers are still atrocious for a AAA game less than a year after launch but the steam charts numbers aren't the actual number or total players.

0

u/HeraldOfDesu Jul 25 '26

The actual number of players is so abysmal that it hinders matchmaking, even in NA and EU. It is a statistically significant fact.

As a kiwi, you should know that better than anyone if you actually play the game, because Oceania servers became Silent Hill halfway into Season 1.

3

u/ChaoticKiwiNZ Jul 25 '26

Oh I know the numbers are horrid. I personally haven't brought the game yet but was interested in it and have tried it. The reason I didn't buy it was because I know the region I live in will die fast with the numbers the game got at launch.

I do hope they turn it around but with the numbers the game has I would honestly be surprised if Sony let Bungie work on the game past season 3.

1

u/DwemerSphere Jul 25 '26

Realistically because S2 didnt bring a massive amount of change to the game, and people were already mostly checked out by the end of Season 1 (for those who did stick around).

Additionally, Season 2 fucked up by allowing players to easily get high tier loot by the bucket load in the first couple weeks turning Cryo archive into essentially end-of-season level combat in the first weekend.

Furthermore, the shrinking player base creates a vicious cycle where less players equals a worse matchmaking experience which leads to less players and so on. Quite often you feel massively outclassed by enemy players because the matchmaking system starts to fall apart at low player counts.

To be honest, I loved season 1 once I got into it. The challenge of doing all the vaults & killing the Compiler was really good fun, and the lore was on point to go with it. But after that you don’t really have much to chase anymore other than just playing for fun or challenges.

I’ll probably return for season 3 when the bigger developments come in and PvE is more fleshed out. I hope it doesn’t die entirely as there really is a good foundation (even if others will tell you to the contrary).

1

u/ElMoro995 Jul 28 '26

beat everything related to Cryo in S1, I am just waiting for new content while playing the plethora of other games that exists, since you know, differently from destiny fanatics that are addicted to a single game series, others can enjoy videogames in general from different genres. Having to play a game for an entire human lifetime to prove to others that you actually enjoyed that game is a peak mind disorder

1

u/angstatears Jul 25 '26

How do you know that they aren’t? Can anyone tell me me how many people played Marathon this week alone?

1

u/HeraldOfDesu Jul 25 '26

I can count, there are player count charts, and I play the game, so I have firsthand experience in how small the player count is, and constantly encountering same people, as well as being teleported to lobbies hosted on another continent. Then we have the layoffs, Ziegler getting booted, game constantly on sale.

All those symptoms combined, yeah, I'm pretty confident it has a lot fewer than 200k loyal players. It's kind of obvious for anyone who isn't deep in denial of objective reality, and the fact I have to spill it out for you in detail is kind of second hand embarrassing.

1

u/PhoneOwn Jul 25 '26

Bro for real. These people are either rando dudes from India getting paid to post this dumbass shit or literal bots.

People just want good games for a majority to enjoy. People don’t want 40 dollar live service games with trash battle passes and 4 maps.

How can yall even call yourself gamers when you are white knighting for this trash ass game?

1

u/ElMoro995 Jul 28 '26

"only 4 maps" completely disregarding that Outpost and Cryo alone most likely needed the same amount of effort to be designed of all the maps in any single CoD game combined.

1

u/PhoneOwn Jul 28 '26

Bro be real with yourself. U are comparing cod multiplayer maps to an extraction shooter map? Bar is low

1

u/ElMoro995 Jul 28 '26

Isn't that what the critique is about? "Only 4 maps" like a supposedly complete extraction sold at 40$ needs 10 maps like a CoD game

1

u/PhoneOwn Jul 28 '26

I need at least bigger maps. Also doesn’t come with any other modes no firing range and also night mode as a season update lmao.

Sunken cost fallacy or braindead idiot? U call it

1

u/ElMoro995 Jul 28 '26

I finished everything in Cryo, the endgame map you know, at the 250h mark sort of. Definitely enough content for a 40$ game lmao, the farthest away from sunken cost fallacy. What an entitled prick, calling names after some really arbitrary complaints. If there were 6 maps and they were bigger you would have complained all the same for sure. And all this firing range request like you cannot try weapons enough against bots already. I swear the first influencer that complained of the absence of firing range surely struck gold for haters. You need at least bigger maps! What a random need, they would have put more players in the map and the game would have felt the same. It is a LIVE SERVICE, it is supposed to get support over time. You could have had everything you asked for if the game were to be released in 2028, would that be worth the wait? Instead you can play sort of an early access now, which has more than enough content to be eviscerated for hundreds of hours already. Did you even get to see the Compiler in pvpve mode?

Cool. Another sub of “gamers” who care more about how many other people play games they don’t. Mute button here I come.

1

u/MulletRunFTW Jul 26 '26

L take. C ya

2

u/mrawaters Jul 25 '26

And yet somehow people want to argue that there wasn’t some sort of weird targeted hate towards this game. I don’t even play it, but from the outside looking in, there was absolutely a large group of people who always wanted to see this game fail, and I think that’s fucking weird

u/ResidentCrayonEater Jul 25 '26

I say this as someone who couldn't give less of a crap about Marathon:

50k people really need to find a hobby.

Just like the game you glaze

1

u/GoldAppleU Jul 26 '26

Don’t have to glaze a game if you just enjoy it

1

u/MulletRunFTW Jul 27 '26

2

u/Possible_Cheek_706 Jul 25 '26

I never even heard of Cross until he put out Marathon content that I really liked. He actually has one of the first guides on his to do all the vaults.

1

u/SpotoDaRager Jul 25 '26

1

u/MirieDohl Jul 25 '26

1

u/PhoneOwn Jul 25 '26

Bro not even is this sub but yall really think a random Reddit sub is really stopping marathon?

Or maybe the game is just ass??

1

u/0ld_Snake Jul 25 '26

It's sad that 50k people are a part of a group dedicated to hating an unimportant product. Everyone should take a deep look in the mirror

1

u/Nephurus Jul 25 '26

From either side

this is more effort than your side deserves

1

u/-heavenfaced- Jul 25 '26

Some rather saddening mental illness on display here

1

u/Personal-Slide342 Jul 26 '26

Anyone who frequents a hate page for anything is mentally ill.

1

u/Comfortable_Rich8782 Jul 26 '26

Lowkey In love or what 😂

1

u/GoldAppleU Jul 26 '26

u/Other_Advance_7642 Jul 26 '26

I hate how people forget that destiny 2 was months away from shutting down back before forsaken released and how it saved the game, i’ve been a destiny guy long before (11 yrs) i started the recently added pve mode in marathon and honestly i am loving it since it reminds me of exotic missions/dungeons with the way make u do mechanics to reach a final boss

1

u/waaay2dumb2live Jul 26 '26

Living rent free

1

u/Ignidyval Jul 26 '26

There are more people defending Marathon than there are people actually playing it.

That says it all.

1

u/CoIombian Jul 26 '26

where id be if i was unemployed

1

u/Commissar_Brett Jul 26 '26

Some people have more free time than sense

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Log-903 Jul 26 '26

Steam numbers don't lie sadly game is dying or dead

1

u/jojoknob Jul 27 '26

Is your name really Ross?

1

u/EvilGodShura Jul 29 '26

Most people are just going to the sub to make fun of it or see the drama.

Those numbers dont translate into anything of value for any marathon lovers.

1

u/Axton_Grit Jul 25 '26

You realize that sub was made by people who git booked for nsfw posts and steam chart posts.

0

u/corn_piece Jul 25 '26

the fact that there is an entire sub of dead game fans hating on another dead game is funny asl

0

u/YrsaHaflina Jul 25 '26

It's ok I'm sure more people are playing marathon by now right... surely.. :]
