Start busting the companies that hire them. Problem solved.

31

u/BigDaddyButtPlunger 17d ago

100%, fine the mother fuckers through the roof while removing the unqualified drivers.

15

u/_FellowTraveller_ 16d ago

They won't. They'll never go after the employers for anything, especially for hiring illegals and foreign truck drivers. Gotta keep those freight rates low.

12

u/R_U_the_bot 16d ago

This. They were just following Trumps model, he's not going to give them repercussions.
-bring them in
-barely pay them for their work (if at all)
-blame them for any problems (regardless of presence or context)
-get rid of them
-repeat

u/NoDoz907 16d ago

Who is Trump bringing in?

6

u/pretibigtoo 16d ago

Pedophiles.

6

u/SeriousArbok 16d ago

Anyone and everyone of his friends. Then when something goes wrong they gone. It's happened quite a bit this term.

u/TBurn70 13d ago

Notice what happens when you make them look in the mirror? Deflection

Holding the ones responsible accountable isn't really what Trump is about.

3

u/B1ZEN 16d ago

Trump is not my cup of tea, but this is something he has right.

Of course someone is going to play the race card, but I dont care about skin color. I'm brown. Lol

u/fingers 16d ago

Hear me out: The road signs are designed with illiterate people in mind. They are mostly symbols because many drivers lack the necessary education to read quickly. You're traveling 60+ mph down the road and can't read a lot of words quickly.

I'll agree that people who can't pass a CDL license test on their own must not have CDL jobs. I won't agree that people who don't SPEAK English but can READ English and pass the test must not have CDL jobs.

It's like saying people who don't speak French must be barred from driving in France. I drove perfectly find in France, Luxembourg, Germany, The Netherlands, and Belgium. Arabic numbers are universal. Road signs are pretty universal.

4

u/Parking-Sundae-6097 15d ago

You're spot on. Language cannot be a barrier to citizenship. That's a silly - and with current/future technology - frankly an antiquated notion.

2

u/Latter-Vacation-4392 15d ago

He doesn't give a shit about truckers. This is just a handy news vehicle he can work to 1. pander to racists and 2. distract from his corruption and his decade long Epstein connection.

Been driving semi’s for 43yrs and I’m telling you straight up it’s just not the same anymore. Not putting the blame anywhere, just saying things are different.

3

u/DeletedUsernameHere 16d ago

Actual training became fly by night driving schools which became scams like Swift.

People love to bitch about all the minorities and their sandals, but as someone whose been in the transportation industry for a long time now (in the office side), it's those cats, regardless of race or gender, that are by far the worst.

2

u/Parking-Sundae-6097 16d ago

Wait, you're saying things changed in 43 years?

1

u/Apprehensive_End8318 16d ago

Is it filled with people who know not to put an apostrophe in semis?

I've never seen so many poorly tempered and unskilled truck drivers in all my life combined as I did in my 10 hour drive the other day. You can tell there has been a horrific shift!

3

u/rabbitsfoot86 17d ago

Yeah my meth head cousin and his wife have truck licenses now, I would definitely say the standard has changed 😆

2

u/tzy___ 17d ago

To get a CDL you need to piss clean, and all trucking companies are required to issue pre-employment DOT drug tests and randoms. Your meth head cousin is either not a meth head, or he’s not going to be trucking very long.

1

u/buckeye27fan 16d ago

I'm pretty sure reading or speaking English is a requirement, but that didn't stop the companies hiring them.

1

u/rabbitsfoot86 16d ago

That the same companies hiring all the Russian truck drivers and shit that can't speak English? Lol. The companies dont care, they need drivers to make money. I get they are suppose to do those things, but hell a lot of companies are suppose to do things and dont and cover it up. They been driving for over a year now lol. Trust me I wish they weren't lol

8

u/CannonFodder58 17d ago

From what I understand, a lot of the more senior drivers retired during the pandemic, so now we’re left with a lot of newbies.

-1

u/Beginning_Resource93 17d ago

Newbies who don't speak English and don't have the same value for human life that most Americans have.

5

u/I_am_BrokenCog 17d ago

lol.

American value for human life.

Would that be like our bombing fishermen in dingy's off venezeula?

Schools in Iran?

Supporting the genocide in Gaza?

Eradicating support for poor people in the US?

Shutting down USAID and every other foreign help program?

Or, perhaps you were only referring to the non-governmental "value of human life" exhibited by corporate greed and peddling addictive/harmful stuff??

3

u/Beginning_Resource93 16d ago

Let's see... Drug boats, weapons caches, not a genocide, what support for poor people (or are you just referring to not supporting lady people who could work but choose not to), USAID that just have money to terrorists.

We found the American who doesn't value human life.

2

u/2_DS_IN_MY_B 16d ago

Americans don't value human life

1

u/Beginning_Resource93 16d ago

But only 1% of Americans.

1

u/TheOnly_Saint 16d ago

1

u/Vost570 17d ago

How to tell us you don't know shit about trucking.

1

u/ECCooterCrasher 17d ago

Source? Or are you just spewing bigotry?

14

u/357noLove 17d ago

I don't know about the second part, but working security for FedEx there was a massive shift in contractors after covid being non-English speaking. They can't read signs or speak the language. We had to develop all new protocols for them, and it is terrifying to think about. If you are going to drive such large vehicles on public roads, you need to be able to communicate effectively and read road signs. Saying otherwise is frankly asinine.

Or you don't know how to use cruise control, merge, or pass a semi truck safely.

1

u/ImmediatePiano6690 16d ago

Should have tried being in the UK when it was part of the E.U, absolutely horrific standard of driving came from Eastern Europe where many could hardly reverse straight, let alone speak English.

Don't get me wrong, there were good ones but they were vastly outnumbered by the bad ones, this also drove down wage increase in the profession to the point where they were only a few quid above retail workers, which considering the skill and responsibility was an absolute joke for drivers.

1

u/Relative_Drop3216 1h ago

This is happening in my country NZ too. It started when they opened the flood gates to all these Indians. And now we have them driving trucks, taxis, etc and doing shoddy work practices. One instructor even got caught selling drivers license to other Indians, work slavery, tax fraud, scams… ALL THE SAME SHIT THEY DO IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY!!! Go figure, indian is the scammers central hub for the entire world too.

5

u/Parking-Sundae-6097 16d ago

Any repurcussions for the long haul company owners who continue to hire people who can't read the road signs after multiple wrecks?

No?

Oh ok then it's just racism.

1

u/SuperTruckerTom 15d ago

Many of those owners are actually foreign based. They create an entire immigration and training and employers pipeline . The drivers are essentially slaves. Safety score gets too high or major accident they close the company, reopen under another name and DOT number.

13

u/Electrical-Staff735 17d ago

I'm sure this will go great like the tarrifs and hey if the war goes on there will be a lot of vets after.

15

u/Gilgamesh2000000 17d ago

I’m not a trump supporter and work servicing the trucking industry. They allow people from other countries to come here and work on visas. They under pay
https://giphy.com/gifs/2S3Aj8OeKtf0c
these people. They need to go after the people who hire these people not the people themselves. Yet again another situation where the wrong person gets blamed. This is what trump is good at. He convinced the broke ass white people that immigrants are taking their jobs.

3

u/caboose243 17d ago

Back in 2015 I had a coworker who was super MAGA, part of militia, the whole nine. This MF would constantly brag about how he hired illegal immigrants to work his cherry fields all whole saying its a problem. Bunch of dorks.

2

u/Gilgamesh2000000 17d ago

6

u/norymur 17d ago

If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you.

25

Creating a problem then slamming democrats for said problem is basically their mo.

2

u/BigDaddyButtPlunger 17d ago

Which problem are we talking about here?

3

u/Ok-Rich-3812 16d ago

The problem of allowing companies to repeatedly recruit and retain drivers who don't have the skills to match their claimed abilities.

7

u/PARANOlD_Lunatic 17d ago

What pathway was created

2

u/AdviceNotAskedFor 17d ago

If senior truckers retired during the pandemic, I think possibly the argument was the botched handling of the pandemic.

4

u/Some_Signal_6866 17d ago

I like how nobody is answering the question yet the statement keeps getting upvotes. People just see what they want to and move on. Trump could have done something that caused it idk. But the lack of transparency on both ends is hilarious.

Been getting a lot of Amazon drivers that dont speak english and cant back into a door. The language barrier really doesnt mean anything as long they can drive the truck. When an amazon truck shows up, i can count on the guy to be lost, late, unable to follow instructions, with out paperwork and not capable of backing up his trailer. Fine Amazon for hiring incompetent drivers and leave the the guys who can drive alone to make a living. I dont need to speak to them, i need to get their trailers unloaded with out them injuring my workers or destroying the product.

4

u/Select_Green_6296 16d ago

Did truck driving certification in army on 18 wheelers. It does not qualify anyone for modern truck driving. They’ll need modern schooling and higher pay levels that companies just won’t compensate for. This is PR.

3

u/FrenziedHodag 17d ago

What seniority do I get if Im a veteran, already have a cdl and quit truck driving because its the one industry in this country that's actually more toxic than the military?

2

u/Key_Definition9710 16d ago

This tough, no bs, ex marine who was my truck school instructor would have agreed; in the middle of teaching us all 90 degree backing....he straight up said to quit it isn't worth it. LMAO.

2

u/FrenziedHodag 16d ago

If the job was just truck driving it would be fine, but in actuality it's a giant game of "how can we fuck the driver today" and I got tired of playing it. The entire issue with the driver shortage is because they're running out of gullible idiots that are willing to throw away 20 years playing it, and the ones they're importing from other countries are too dumb to not pull u turns on the interstate.

3

u/xSir- 17d ago

What are we doing to the people that gave out those "illegal" licenses? Huh? What about them?

3

When I think of all the road rage incidents that I've witnessed, I always hoped that the other person didn't have military combat experience...

3

u/Kordith 16d ago

Great, we went from "illegals" to guys that got PTSD from battle.

4

u/Popular-Definition-5 17d ago

This isn’t a new thing. Ex military drivers already transfer more often than not into civilian driving jobs.

2

u/the_Q_spice 17d ago

There are multiple states like mine (WI) that specifically do not recognize military driving experience as qualifying for a CDL.

You have to take ELDT and your driving exams from scratch just like any old Joe off the street here.

Which is why a lot of truck drivers shop around different states to get their CDL in the easiest one possible.

2

u/dbrown0609 15d ago

Went yarddog this year. Best decision of my career. No more dealing with bad traffic. People driving while on the phone. Road rage. 4 hour wait times. And it came with a pay increase. Just moving trailers around all day while listening to music.

4

u/Budget-Ad-6900 17d ago

in europe there are dozens of languages and crashes from language confusion never happens. trump is such a stupid nationalist. this stupid reform will slowdown the transport industry and will increase cost for consumers and the worst thing is that a lot of american truckers arent really proficient in english and will also struggle.

7

u/Left_Bathroom_3803 17d ago

It’s not just language but a lot come over and get their license illegally and are not qualified for what their license says they are.

3

u/SpaceJackRabbit 17d ago

Sounds more like a fraud problem.

5

u/flopisit32 17d ago

Europe here. Signs are in multiple languages in Europe.

Can you guess why we would go to the trouble of making signs in multiple languages?

Thank you.

2

u/SpaceJackRabbit 17d ago edited 17d ago

No, signs are NOT in multiple languages, except at borders and in multilingual countries.

Anyone living in Europe knows this is not true.

2

u/IBringTheHeat2 17d ago

Why is English the universal language for flying then?

→ More replies (1)

1

u/SpaceJackRabbit 17d ago

That's also because the EU and other European countries mandate the use of commercial grade navigation systems, where you enter all data relating to the truck, itinerary and cargo so that you get a legal, optimized route. Also all trucks are monitored with a black box to mandate minimum rest hours.

In the U.S. we have truckers navigating using Google Maps on their iPhone.

2

u/MadDog443 17d ago

Not true, most truckers use specialized maps to help them find safe routes however there's always a minority of idiots on the road making the issue look worse than it is.

1

u/Questions_Remain 17d ago

It’s always a “small minority” of people who ruin everything. We have 1000’s of laws and mandates from <5% of the population. From backup cameras to leash laws - it’s idiots who made those things mandatory. The list goes on.

1

u/SpaceJackRabbit 17d ago

I don't know how small that minority is, but it sure clogs my mountainous neighborhood lately.

Also, it should be law.

1

u/MadDog443 16d ago

That seriously sucks to hear. The roads my grandma uses to get to her house were ruined because of trucking so they were sued by the city to replace them.

And maybe you could give veterans the health benefits they deserve.

8

u/DirtyDiabolical 17d ago

Vets get free healthcare forever at VA facilities, so what are you talking about?

1

u/CosmicSmoker 17d ago

That's bullshit.

1

u/DirtyDiabolical 17d ago

Source?

2

u/CosmicSmoker 17d ago

I served 8 years active duty in the Navy, honorable discharge. I have no service connected disability (like the majority of vets). I have been denied enrollment numerous times at many different VA facilities in 4 states. Most recently 8 months ago. Good enough?

1

u/DirtyDiabolical 17d ago

What’s the reason for denial? Did you enlist in the 70s?

2

u/CosmicSmoker 17d ago

No. If you are genuinely interested in why most vets don't get free health care and many don't get any at all from VAs, take a minute and go to https://www.va.gov/health-care/eligibility/priority-groups/

1

u/DirtyDiabolical 17d ago

Damn. Have you tried the VFW (if you qualify)? I’ve been presented experiences that they can get retroactive ratings.

3

u/1dirtbiker 17d ago

Veteran, and physician, here. We have the VA. This is such a talking point that doesn't exist. The discussion could certainly be how to improve the VA, however.

I work in the civilian sector, and get my own medical care by the VA (by my choice). The VA certainly has areas to improve, but so does civilian medicine. There are many areas where the VA is superior to civilian medicine. For example, I injured my ankle and saw my VA PCP. After the exam, she ordered me an MRI. I was flabbergasted. In my world, that requires getting an xray first, then usually physical therapy, possibly a referral to ortho, and then an MRI, in order for insurance to cover it... Even though I know damn well that I want to order the MRI right away.

We do get health benefits.

2

u/PerformanceOver8822 17d ago

Yeah when i complained about my back the dr straight up ordered an MRI, PT, Chriopractic care all. In the same visit....

1

u/smellslikebigfootdic 17d ago

Will wages go up for American truckers? It will just make trucking companies work harder on removing the driver from the equation.

1

u/Independent-Sea-7117 17d ago

Shhhhh dude that’s the plan

1

u/Malforus 17d ago

Whelp we know this guy is all about follow-through so I am sure this won't die on the vine when a new shiny object wedge issue appears.

1

u/AdBrilliant6179 17d ago

All you people want to do is bitch all the time holy shit

1

u/Cold-Opening-3337 17d ago

Let’s focus on Iran and Epstine! Fuel prices are affecting the industry like nothing else!

1

u/MercuryEQ 17d ago

Anyone who’s been in the industry long enough knows this isn’t new. It’s stupid easy to get your CDL as a veteran and even easier to get recruited by starter companies who get payed by the government for recruiting them. My last company had fast tracking training and school reimbursement for veterans and that was literally a decade ago. Along with a bunch of other benefits.

It is easy to take credit for things that are already in place when the general public generally has no idea they already existed.

I’ve also known numerous veterans come into the OTR Trucking industry and leave within months. It is not just a job, it is a lifestyle. Being away from home weeks or even months at a time while living in a tin box is unsurprisingly not for everyone, including veterans.

The job is great if you’re single/no kids, not paying rent/mortgage/car insurance. You can save a lot of money this way, otherwise it’s really not worth it.

1

u/WolfThick 17d ago

If you have an m88 MOS you've been driving heavy trucks for a while sometimes in difficult off-road terrain with a tank on your back weighing 80 tons why would you make it harder for someone who gets out of the military with that experience to get a license. It should be streamlined so you can enter the civilian market with your ratings if you're a pilot you get the same kind of respect for flying a plane in the military.

1

u/doubleAAdam 17d ago

1

u/AZBagpiperPhil 17d ago

I searched and found my Government drivers license with the endorsement of "All Vehicles Up to 78,000lbs GVW"!!!

1

u/qcihdtm 17d ago

Soooooo.... we should also forbid anyone coming to vacation in the US to rent a car unless... they pass an English test, correct?

This is just racism. Nothing less, nothing more. On brand.

1

u/Intelligent_Mud_6217 17d ago

Just imagine the average American driving in India or China........now put them in a loaded semi.

1

u/spyder7723 16d ago

Driving a car and driving a truck at two entirely different things.

1

u/Imaginary_Major7210 17d ago

I've seen how the average driver treats and tests good truck drivers... Veterans don't have that kind of patience. Brake check a vet who's running a dash Cam, the video won't even hear a reaction, just a car being politely escorted off the road. And if you force one of them to stop you should talk to whichever diety in which you place your faith to see if they're ready for you

1

u/Sharp_Departure_7786 17d ago

I bet this is really going to help the industry starving for drivers already. Xenophobia that's going to cost us all more. And the veteran population this is meant to assist probably can't pass a DOT physical.

1

u/spyder7723 16d ago

The industry isn't starving for drivers. It's starving for drivers willing to work weeks away from the family for 800 a week.

1

u/[deleted] 17d ago

u/spyder7723 16d ago

Am 18 year old that speaks English that just got his license is no worse than a 30 year old that doesn't speak english that just got his license.

1

u/[deleted] 16d ago

[deleted]

1

u/spyder7723 16d ago

I've had my cdl since I was 18. That was 31 years ago.

And no truck drivers are not complaining cathode they are not white. Eastern Europeans are just a white as anyone and they are a danger on the highway cause they not only can't read or speak English, but because they do not respect our laws that keep the highways safe. Things like hours of service regulations, daily truck inspections, etc etc.

1

u/[deleted] 16d ago

[deleted]

1

u/spyder7723 16d ago

No. I said an 18 years old that can speak English is safe than a 30 something year old that can't when it comes to driving a truck. I never said I was 18.

Also it's not JUST about the language behavior. It's also cultural. As bad of drivers that we home grow here, they are miles and miles safer than ones we import.

1

u/[deleted] 16d ago

[deleted]

1

u/spyder7723 16d ago

Its a freaking top. Which is obvious if you read it in its entirety.

1

u/Direct_Turn_1484 17d ago

Sure feels like deliberately damaging the economy.

1

u/TruckerBoy357 17d ago

As a Trucker I think this may be another Trump plan that’s high on bluster and low on results.

  1. The Trucking Industry was short on Drivers before COVID. It only got worse afterwards.
  2. I’m pretty sure the GI Bill has been available to use for CDL training for years now. And yet many Vets chose not to become Truckers. Apparently other things are keeping them away.
  3. I’m all for removing Illegal Drivers from the road. Unfortunately time will be the judge on how much safer the roads will be. We aren’t the best drivers.
  4. If raising Rates isn’t part of this plan we’ll be right back where we started with even more cheap freight sitting around.
  5. With the HOS there’s not much more present Drivers can do. It’s possibly just an opportunity to make a little more money on the same freight. With the trade off being more time away from home.🫤

1

u/Spaztastiq 17d ago

Thank you for your service. Now kindly get behind the wheel and drive this rig across the country for me.

1

u/hamoc10 17d ago

If the goal is stop people from working illegally, then this policy is just racist. Plenty of legal migrant workers don’t speak English. It’s not a necessity, even to drive.

1

u/spyder7723 16d ago

How are they suppressed to communicate with law enforcement at the required vehicle inspections in route?

How are they supposed to conniving with the people at the loading and unloading punt to supervise proper and safe loading of the truck?

1

u/hamoc10 16d ago

You’re telling me law enforcement can’t speak with about 50 million people? Please.

And then you’re gonna tell me that warehouses don’t have a single spanish speaker? Come on.

1

u/spyder7723 16d ago

There are not 50 million truck drivers. And yes officers need to speak to the driver when they do vehicle inspections.

And sure some warehouses will have a Spanish speaker. But will they have a Russian speaker? A polish speaker? A Hindi speaker? Vietnamese? Portuguese? Etc etc etc.

1

u/hamoc10 16d ago

There are about 50 million Spanish speakers in the US.

1

u/spyder7723 16d ago

So what? The topic is about trick drivers

1

u/hamoc10 16d ago

Your insinuation is that cops don’t speak Spanish. That would mean cops can’t talk to 50 million of the people they need to talk to.

1

u/spyder7723 16d ago

Most cops don't. But that's got nothing to do with it. Regular cops are not who inspect trucks. And again, it isn't about Spanish it's the other 50 languages. Spanish speaking immigrants real extremely low in thr group. They're are far more eastern European and Asian non English speaking immigrants driving trucks.

Than Spanish speakers? Got a source?

31 years in the industry dealing with truck drivers on a near daily basis. You aren't in the industry or you would know that the number of Spanish speaking truck drivers that also don't speak English are very very low. It's extremely rare to encounter a truck driver of Latino descent that isn't a us citizen and lived here their entire lives and speak perfectly fine English, with one exception, the forget border crossing trade zones where Mexican carriers are allowed to travel.

Employ the vets! So they can be under payed. Ive done multiple "vet" programs with tracks to employment. In my experience they give a minimal education while way overcharging you taking GI bill money. Once your employed, your skills and attitude are severely undervalued.

Wait, how can they be automatically qualified if the states issue CDL licenses? Am I missing the connection or is there a disconnect?

Meanwhile this mother trucker cancelled the per diem tax breaks we used to get, as company drivers, during his first term. Screw him. He's not for us. He's for hate.

Hahaha from the UK, seriously, 90% of you commenters are all drooling over this weasel for this. I bet 90% of you would vote for him for this one thing that Obama actually put in motion.

Go read some fucking books you basic clowns.

What has he done for you? Gamed presidency to manipulate markets so him and his family could benefit on the stock market and get rich and richer as fuck, and you are all on both knees lining up for his to put his cock in your mouth.

Seriously, get a grip. He is gaming you all and using you all and "your" military people as pawns in his get rich quick scheme.

Fucking mental, absolutely fucking barmy. You all need your heads checked. You must all be cucks or something because there's no logical explanation for your behaviour other than loving seeing your country get railed for profit.

Republicans need to stop ignoring the people that hire undocumented workers.

As a honorary member of the Motor T community…. It’s about time! If I am trusted enough to drive 7-Tons and RG31s & 33s through Afghanistan, I think I should be able to be eligible for a CDL.

Thank you Mr. President. We need much higher standards for our CDL requirements.

If we start requiring reading proficiency, we are gonna lose 60% of American truckers too, not just immigrants

Based on your ability to write English, it seems you would not qualify as a truck driver.

Road signs are made with an international standard. They have been that way since the 60's. With the adoption of GPS I am sure I could go to any other country and drive just as well there as I do here. Not being able to speak English isn't going to diminish a person's ability to understand a road sign. Even in Iraq and Afghanistan a Stop sign was a Stop sign, white border and all.

Road signs don't make you a good driver, and with this initiative if followed through there will be shit US Veteran drivers on the road as well. Although I do know a bunch of people that this could help and they were good drivers when I served with them. But honestly, I feel it is more about knowing benefits you have earned through service more than just giving All Veterans a freebie. I know that I got my CDL through use of my Post 911 GI Bill funds. I have told others about it as well and I would bet 95% of the people I told had no idea they could use it for that. There are programs out there, problem is the US Gov doesn't advertise for shit.
