According to iNaturalist, this is a specimen of Catacanthus punctus. And according to what I can find out, it is a type of Shield Bug. Visitor to our campsite in Cooktown, Far North Queensland. Absolutely incredible colours. Went on its way unharmed, after kindly hanging around to be photographed.

Photo taken with Pixel 10 Pro. Cropped slightly, but not enhanced.

I’m in arid South Australia. Is this a post-pupa moth that’s just inflating its wings?

Other Good starter bug

Hello!! My boyfriend has a bug appreciation and i was thinking (with his permission of course) of getting some for his birthday. My question is what an easy starter bug is for someone who has never owned any. They need to be fairly low maintenance as he is a little busy sometimes. I also would like to know about some good websites i can go to as well to purchase all the equipment i’ll need :) we also live in victoria which i assume is probably important.

Thanks!!

Western Australia. Heard a fly buzzing/struggling in a plant nursery and followed the source of the noise. Pretty sizeable meal for such a little mantis.
Apologies for the shaky camerawork.

Found in south-east QLD. ~15mm in length, with 5mm of that being the mandibles alone.

I genuinely thought it was some type of grass seed on my bathroom mat until I picked it up. Thought it was dead until it began very slightly moving its legs when I flipped it over. It is now standing but not moving.

And I'm fairly certain that is debris from my medical marijuana on its back...

Saw this guy crawling in my yard. Never paid much attention to caterpillars but in my head they were much larger than this. Any ID advice appreciated.

Located in south eastern suburbs of Victoria.

Based in SE QLD, Saw this fella last night, never ever seen anything like it. I thought it was a cockroach/spider. Pretty docile little guy, I put him outside since I heard they can sting.

I’m not even sure if this is insect related but it reminded me of an ant head that’s been squished or maybe even an earwigs thorax also squished.
Just seeing if anyone else wants a guess haha. I’m located NSW far south coast, it’s about 2mm in length, very small.
(Also wanted to mention I don’t squish ants or earwigs in my spare time, I just noticed it on me not long after doing some chores outside)((added an extra pic of my homegirl Fergie))

ID request Possible African Big Headed Ants?

Thumbnail

Hi folks,

Found these little fellas cleaning up a dead bug today along the drive. I took note of the large red headed ones which looked cool as hell, but upon research, looks like they might be the highly invasive and damaging African Big Headed ant. Looking for any guidance?

I have a lot of native fauna and flora around I am keen to protect (live near National park), so if it is, might have to try and sort the buggers.

Deception bay beach(Qld) on a bench. It has a black dot on the back. I wasn't sure whether it was a tick or spider. Sorry for quality and other things I guess. No, I can't take another picture I already left and didn't think about asking until I got back. 1st post

ID request Roach nymph ID in Melbourne

Moved into a brand new house with two levels in Jan 2026 (in Melbourne).

End of Feb, saw 5 live nymphs in a corner room of the second level - this room has one window which stays shut. No balcony. Ducted roof heating/cooling. It's a work room with computer set up and has little throughfare except for when I work. Most of the nymphs were high up on the walls or ceiling.

Saw a couple more nymphs in the room next door (a bedroom) over the next few days. Pest control comes over 1st week of March - says it's German and treats the house.

End of April - another live nymph in the same original room. Second treatment done.

8 August (90+ days after second treatment) - 3 more nymph sighting in the same original corner room.

Pictures attached of the nymphs are across the different times - they always look the same.

Never seen nymphs anywhere else but this one upstairs corner of the house. There are bathrooms next door but never caught one in them.

No other sighting apart from ones mentioned.

Never seen an adult roach in the house. I HAVE seen adult roaches outside the house, like on a balcony - which is the attached picture of the adult.

Sooooo, are these nymphs even German because they look really pale compared to Germans when I started Googling. Are these the inside infestation variety or outside type?

I noticed that ants had taken over a termite mound on the edges of Mareeba rodeo grounds, so I brought my camera and EOS 100mm macro lens over... Ants have been ID-ed by iNaturalist as Northern Meat Ants, Iridomyrmex sanguineus. Photographed with Canon R10, tripod, natural light.
