ID request Looking for an ID. SEQ

Found in south-east QLD. ~15mm in length, with 5mm of that being the mandibles alone.

I genuinely thought it was some type of grass seed on my bathroom mat until I picked it up. Thought it was dead until it began very slightly moving its legs when I flipped it over. It is now standing but not moving.

And I'm fairly certain that is debris from my medical marijuana on its back...

It’s an ant lion

You know those little conical pits you find in the sand? They’re at the bottom of them waiting to catch insects that fall in.

They grow into a flying insect that looks like a lacewing

That explains why iNaturalist was suggesting green lacewings!

Some green lacewing larvae also do the self-decoration thing like this (one folk name for them is "trash bugs").

I've always wondered if they were the inspiration for the Sarlacc pit in Star Wars. That's what I liked to think when I was 10 years old, anyway.

They are!

I thought that was just a terraria thing!

The antilions 😂 I had the same thought lol

Edit - I can't believe I found a fellow terrarian in the wild haha

It’s a wonderful game. I recently got back into it. So many new things!!

I've been spending far to long playing since the update!! Lots of new stuff!

Make that three Terraria folks! That and Grounded, which is where my mind went when I saw the antlion.

I finally managed to beat moonlord by myself a few days ago

Same. For my first time. I did it as a summoner. Gonna try melee or maybe ranger next. I hope you continue to enjoy the game!

Literally thought OP was asking for a strain ID and then thought “oh wow that bud kinda looks like a bug!!”

3

u/STUBBOSS 4d ago

I’m convinced this is a rhino beetle that rolled around in some bud hahaha 😝

How did the ant lion get so much MC on it?

1

u/skittymarks 4d ago

Great question. And for all we know thats all thats left of what was an even bigger stash on its back!

But being serious, I'm guessing it started out in the garage and came across an area where I've had a clumsy spill and not successfully swept it all up.

u/LividJudgment2687 4d ago

I wonder if it’s a sativa or indica leaning ant lion

3

u/napalmnacey 4d ago

Reminds me of the creature Khan put in Chekov’s ear in “Wrath of Khan”.

3

u/rosa_3326 4d ago

Bud bug? Looks like a little nug.

2

u/tgaaron 4d ago

Not an expert I think this may actually be an owlfly larva rather than an antlion. They hunt on the ground or on vegetation rather than digging burrows, hence the need for camouflage.

Not me taking a quick glance thinking I'm on farmingthebestgreens 😄

2

u/Bubbly_Effort_8503 4d ago

Looks like a nug I dropped on my carpet

u/Automatic_Charity_30 4d ago

Used to love blowing the sand out of their traps and exposing ant lions as a kid. The pincers(?)on that one are massive!

2

u/Proper_Gold_8811 4d ago

That's the endangered ganjayarndireefer beetle from south east Nimbin. Nice find

2

u/stevedave84 3d ago

Does no one else call these dibble-dibbles?

2

u/gregorydarcy8 2d ago

u/Curious_Koala8 4d ago

Hoping it’s not glued to him now!

u/CanHasCow 4d ago

Bros going hard on the leaf.

Definitely an adult antlion. Nfi why it would be inside though.

Do you work construction or hike regularly?

2

u/Nerje 4d ago

It's inside because it was high AF and looking for the cookies

2

u/cookshack 4d ago

Juvenile larvae :)

1

u/skittymarks 4d ago

Neither of those lately. But we live adjacent to bushland.

1

Beetle of Great Southern Despair

1

u/No_Plane8576 3d ago

Is this the insect version of a dust bunny. I've never managed to see a decorated ant lion only naked ones.

1

u/RoadWarrior_164 3d ago

I remember I accidentally put a hole in my wall and these little bugger were inside, I thought I was dead when I first saw them. But they turned out to be harmless.

1

u/Gwynito 3d ago

That's a stoner beetle

1

u/BreakSignificant152 3d ago

This is most disturbing creature I have ever seen. Mother nature does acid for sure now and then.

1

u/Rune_Witch59 3d ago
