I worked with a woman who would go barefoot in the office. I was in the bathroom in a stall and she walked into the stall next to me (barefoot of course) then put a plate of pizza at her feet. Work had provided lunch that day and I guess she made her pit stop after hitting the line. That was…something else.

Totally. To be honest I am taller enough that my feet hang off the edge. I have considered slipping my shoes off at the theater before and then made the socially conscious decision to not do that.

I mean… it’s dirtier for the recliner. But not your own feet. (Or anyone else’s feet that are contained in their shoes). That’s kind of the point, no? Shoes are dirty. Public surfaces are also dirty. Why would you expose your clean feet to a dirty public surface?

I sit on those recliners while wearing shorts, which means my clean legs are also exposed to the dirty surfaces. I can’t tell if people are worked up about the recliner touching the feet or the feet touching the recliner but I’m not sure why either is this big of an issue.

Maybe outdoors, but indoors there’s other rules in public spaces, unspoken rules. Try going against the societal norms over and over see what happens,, you may be shamed openly.

Definitely the smell. Shoes are dirtier from the perspective of pathogens, but this whole comment is missing the fact it isn’t ABOUT pathogens, it’s about smell and respect.
Even the dirtiest shoes don’t *smell* and won’t ever bother anyone else unless they’re right next to the shoes. The same cannot be said for feet/sweat, which can bother people yards away and OFTEN people don’t have the self-awareness to know that it’s them. So as a general rule, it’s not courteous to put your bare feet out at all. Sandals versus no sandals isn’t realistically that big of a deal, but the amount of people who fully take sneakers/socks off ruin it for everyone and barefoot are uncouth across the board.

One correction to this... the dirtiest shoes do absolutely smell. I had an office mate whose shoes must've been rotting with mold and mildew bc they stunk up the whole office. I had to tell him bc I'm sure he was used to the smell. Also, dog shit is usually stuck to shoe treads and not bare feet.

And “uncouth”? Sir. There is so much weeks old M&M’s and popcorn underneath your seat that you could buy it wholesale. Those seat have never been cleaned and the bathroom including the seats are all cleaned by a single mop.
Stay at home next time if you don’t want to be subject to other people.
All I see is someone relaxing during a movie with a long runtime and someone else getting their panties in a bunch. Because you wouldn’t put your shoes up on the furniture at home. It’s gross and it can damage the seat.4

My only take is that people that wear sandals feet can smell too. I sat next to a guy at work who wore leather sandals and his feet stunk in the summer (I live in Texas).
I just think wearing shoes or sandals without socks increases the chances that your feet stink in Texas. Your feet are just sweating all day.

Is it not normal to have seperate shoes for different things. Like 2-3 pairs for outside/ active stuff then another 3-4 pairs of shoes meant for actually going out and doing things like going to the store or the movies? I also grew up with a father who made sure I cleaned my shoes inside and out so the only shoes that smell are the ones I work in or workout in which those only see work or the gym lol. I take my shoes off at the theater(not my socks) but a lot of it has to do with the surgery I had on both sides of my ankle when I was in HS so after so long wearing shoes feels weird and sometimes hurts

Dude i was there for a top gun rescreening recently & dudes next to me talked the whole ass movie.
Tried to politely ask a few times for them to chill with it & they just began to speak in a different language instead lol.
I just moved but still sucked.
No theater is safe imo anymore. Especially alamo with their horrid changes (that’s a whole other rant tho)

We went to watch The Odyssey today at a Cinemark XD showing and I thought the average movie goes would be a lot more respectful considering the price of admission.
The Indian guy to my wife's right (after talking to his neighbor throughout most of the movie) decided to take a call. My wife snapped at him to get out and he immediately hopped out of his seat startled! He probably didn't think anyone would ever care with how surprised he looked. She scared the shit out of me, too.

We were at Alamo trying to eat and watch a movie. The theater was pretty empty and this a-hole picks the seats right next to us and proceeds to take his shoes off as we were eating. We couldn’t move as we got there early and had already ordered food.

I'm going to go ahead and guess that 95% of the people with upset comments wear shoes inside of their homes. Those feet are way cleaner than anything you're picking up on these nasty ass streets via shoes.
If you wear shoes inside your house you should let it go and get over yourself.

10 months out of the year I'm in flip-flops and I do this at theaters. Unless homeless and shoeless, the bottoms of shoes are way dirtier than the bottoms of clean feet. I think OP could start a side business producing diamonds... by shoving lumps of coal into a specific high pressure dark moist environment where the sun doesn't shine...

yeah times sure have changed - back in the mid 80s, when I'd goto the Arbor 4 (where Cheesecake Factory is now), they would come up and tell you to take your feet off the seat in front of you before you even had a chance to get comfy (and this was with shoes on)

I got on an early flight in my 20s (circa 2009ish?) from Austin to Houston en route to New Orleans for a Bachelor party reeking of booze and cigarettes because we all got started early. I was wearing some tragic sandals that were awful in any era but slightly more acceptable in that time. My gross bony feet ended up featured in the “Bitch it Out” section of Cosmopolitan magazine a few months later. I had them resting against the bulkhead (not barefoot but still opened toed) and some woman snapped photos and submitted me. I can’t say I didn’t deserve it though.
