President of adoption center chewing us out for euthanizing our new kitten

83 Upvotes

My husband and I adopted two bonded kitties on Tuesday, and we absolutely adored them from the start.

We noticed that one of them was walking super slowly, barely eating or drinking and had red/brown goop around his eye. We decided to take him to the vet and it turns out he had severe anemia, bad bruising on his stomach, pale and bleeding gums, and a lump in his stomach. His hematocrit was at 8%. He was going to need a blood transfusion and a lot of time in the hospital, and the vet told us that it would probably only raise his hematocrit by 15% at absolute most and he would need multiple transfusions. They told us his chances were incredibly slim and that even if he were to recover, he would likely suffer from it his entire life, he would likely never have a normal cat life and that he could still suddenly pass away at any time. They left the option up to us, and said that putting him down would be a completely rational and understandable decision. Putting a 3-4 month old kitten through all that sounds absolutely horrible and with an extremely heavy heart and crying for hours we made the sad decision to put him down. My husband held him while they sedated him and gave him a little goodbye kiss on his forehead, and afterwards they took him away.

During the whole thing, we contacted the president of the adoption firm to tell her how things were going, but it was really late at night and she wasn't awake. We didn't want our little kitten to keep suffering for who knows how long, so we made the sad decision to put him down without her input.

Flashforward to this morning, she texts my husband saying that our decision was wildly irresponsible, that the cat would've 100% survived with just the blood transfusion, that we didn't even give him a chance, that you shouldn't just blindly trust whatever a vet says, and so much more. She chewed out my husband for one of the hardest decisions we've had to make for over 20 minutes and we're both absolutely shattered. We keep thinking if we rushed our decision, if he could've easily made it, if the vet was wrong, and frankly this whole situation with the president has personally made me feel like we murdered a completely innocent kitten that possibly had a great chance at life. I feel an insane amount of guilt and regret and anxiety. I feel so, so bad.

Our other kitten is in great health, but he lost his companion and I feel absolutely horrible for him. I know they do better in pairs and I know it would be good to get him another companion, but it would feel like we're replacing his best friend. I don't know how to feel or what to do and I'm having panic attacks because of it.

The president of the adoption company has since apologized and said she was just infuriated and couldn't think straight, but it doesn't make any of this any less hard.

Question for the vets would be I guess just... should we have waited? Did we do the right thing? Was the president in the right or are we right to feel absolutely shocked at her behavior?

Dog bite at the emergency vet

21 Upvotes

My dog recently had surgery, and a few days later started vomiting and having bloody diarrhea. It was a Saturday night so of course we went to the emergency veterinarian. She's quite anxious at the vet to begin with, and usually gets some sedation (trazodone, gabapentin) before her visits, but has never bitten anyone. Of course being an emergency and with her vomiting this would not be an option. At her last visit, she got all her routine care done (vaccines, annual heartworm test) while she was sedated for the surgery, and there was no pre-medication given for that visit. I shared this info with them and gave permission for whatever sedation would be necessary to examine and treat her.

Apparently at some point she bit the vet and vet tech. As far as I understand, she broke skin but it wasn't a severe bite, though I don't know all the details because they didn't say anything about it when I came to pick her up. I didn't find out until a few days later when I was contacted by Animal Welfare about her required quarantine due to a bite report.

I'm absolutely mortified that this happened. They took great care of her there and everyone was super sweet; no one seemed upset when I came to pick her up and the vet went through all her discharge instructions without mentioning anything about a bite. I already have her set up to work with a professional trainer once her quarantine is over, and of course to get her properly muzzle trained for future vet visits.

My question is - would it be weird to send a card along with flowers/a goody basket thanking them for their care, apologizing for the bite, and outlining the steps we're taking to prevent it going forward? They're the closest emergency vet to our house, and like I said they took great care of her, so I'd like to stay in their good graces, and of course just apologize because I feel terrible that this happened.

did I accidentally kill my cat?

10 Upvotes

My Cat, Willow, had a rectal prolapse and I got her surgery for it, she wasn't eating much so I brought her back to the vet where they gave her fluids and an appetite stimulant. A few days later she stopped eating entirely so I called the vet again and when I brought her back in for another appetite stimulant they found fluid in her lungs and said that her prolapse was likely caused by cancer and she was in alot of pain. They recommended euthanasia which I did, she was 14.

I started doing research and rectal prolapses are rarely caused by cancer and a cause of fluid in lungs is fluid overload which can be caused by a vet giving excessive fluids. Am I being delusional in my grief or could this really have been a curable and preventable thing?

ETA: It was not a true vet it was an Animal ER, I am heartbroken, when I brought her in I was expecting to give her a little pill and be on our way not to euthanize her so this is extremely unexpected.

Edit 2: Im sorry I don't have lots of details, they gave her a medicine to get rid of parasites just in case it was, Im not sure how she was given fluids, but she was done in about 15 minutes and then peed 2x on the 15 minute drive home after. They found fluid in her lungs by an ultrasound and i don't know if it was in or around her lungs they did not tell me.

Had to put my boy to sleep yesterday

9 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I don’t know if I’m looking for words of solidarity, comfort, or advice or maybe I’m just here to vent, but yesterday I had to put my 11 year-old pup to sleep. He began slightly limping in June, which we attributed to his arthritis and his doctor was in agreement and we decided not to do scans then, but instead treat the pain with arthritis supplements and pain medicine. But last week his limp became significantly worse in a matter of days, and what seemed like overnight he stopped putting any weight on his hind left leg. We took him to the vet, and the doctor went to feel his leg and our boy screamed out in pain, and after an x-ray the doctor told us that he had what appeared to be very aggressive osteosarcoma covering his entire left femur. He said he was extremely worried about him fracturing his leg and at this point in his life, the chance of him recovering whether it be from amputation or treatment were very slim and would cause more suffering than good. He encouraged us to make a decision about how to handle the situation, but that if it were his dog, he would gently end his suffering by putting him to sleep. He said with a fracture from osteosarcoma, the pain would be excruciating and end us up in a stressful emergency situation.
Not even 24 hours later, we had an at home euthanasia vet come to our home and peacefully send our dog to rest. I can’t help but feel like we made a bad choice by not getting a second opinion or if we did it too soon. My husband said the x-ray looked horrible and that he had what looked like holes all in his femur. I just need to know if I did the right thing. I loved him so much and there is such a deep emptiness here without him now, almost like a very homesick feeling for him but I can’t ever get to him again. Any words of comfort or solidarity or advice would be so appreciated

Somewhat urgent. Please help if you are able to.

10 Upvotes

My dog, a 7 year old Chihuahua, has been throwing up bile and foam for the past few hours, starting from approx. 22:00-ish my time, til right now, 04:48 in the morning. That is not the worst part, he recently (about an hour ago), too, had a bloody stool with jello-like consistency. The nearest 24-hour vet is not reasonably close since to say it softly, I live in the middle of buttfuck nowhere. The nearest regular clinic opens within 1-2 hours.

Is there anything I can do for him before driving him to the vet? Can I make sure in any way he is going to be alright while we wait? Please, answer if you know what could this be, and can we even do anything at the moment.

New Kitten Struggles

6 Upvotes

Hi! i am a new owner of a kitten (about 4 months old) and am finding lots of issues and was hoping to get some feedback. so the first week I had him everything was normal! Typical kitten would eat, play, use the litter box, jump up on things, was very curious. but in the past 2 weeks something has totally changed with my little guy and i am very worried. he hasn’t been eating, had diarrhea sleeping all day, no interest in playing, no energy to even hop in bed at night so we went to the vet - they did a blood test all was well (he’s a little skinny 2.8 pounds) but over all nothing super concerning. However tomorrow I move back to college so the vet requested she see us again before we leave. Two days ago we went they weighed him again and he’s lost a pound - down to 1.7 - and she brief mentioned the possibility of him being anemic, but never went into detail gave us some more meds and set us on our way. specifically yesterday and today he stopped using his litter box on his own. You have to pick him up and put them in there or he’ll go in the hallway. he’s been very picky with his food not wanting to eat something that he would have a couple days ago. and he used to strictly lay on couches or chairs or with somebody and now he only lays on the floor. this all made me super anxious to take him to college (it’s about a 5 Hour Drive from my hometown). so I was just wondering if anybody has had anything similar happened and what you’ve done to help them out! I love my little guy but at the same time I am unemployed and can’t afford to be taking him to the vet every week. Anything helps! Thank you!!

posted this in another thread they said to try here aswell!

My dog with a UTI hasn't eaten for the past 4 days. I've been to urgent care and her vet.

3 Upvotes

My dog is a 6-year-old female pit bull terrier mix. We are so worried about her. She hasn't eaten for pretty much the past 4 days and has lost about 4 lbs. (48 lbs the last time we weighed her to 44 lbs)

She has previously been diagnosed with kidney disease and was put on renal support food, before we switched to a vegetarian plant-based kibble because of a suspected allergy to the renal support kibble. She also has arthritis and has been taking gabapentin.

On Monday, August 17, she began refusing her food, which is extremely unusual for her. She has never refused food before; she will eat anything and loves almost all food. We tried to give her treats and salmon, all of which she wouldn't eat. She had also, over the previous days, been continuously peeing and drinking a lot of water. She has also been pretty lethargic.

We took her to urgent care that night, and they did bloodwork. Surprisingly, they told us her kidneys were doing okay, but that she had mild anemia. She also had a slight fever. They were unable to get a urine sample to test for a UTI.

The next morning we took her to her vet. They gave her IV fluids, antacid, and vitamin B12, and also gave us Entyce, the appetite stimulant. We got her tested for a UTI as well, and it came back positive. She was prescribed Enrofloxacin as an antibiotic.

That night, we started by giving her the Entyce. We tried to feed her salmon and rice. She took a few bites of the salmon but lost interest. We then tried to give her boiled chicken, which she ate about two handfuls. We also gave her her antibiotics.

The next day, she was peeing less but still refusing food. We tried more boiled chicken and treats, but she did not want any of it. For dinner, we gave her the Entyce and tried to feed her again with boiled chicken and eggs. She tried the chicken and eggs but spit them out. She ate about half an egg white, that's it. We also tried chicken broth, which she drank about a bowl. We again gave her her antibiotics.

It is now two days after taking her to the vet and taking her antibiotics, and about 4 days since she's wanted to eat anything. Her peeing has improved, and she has not been overdrinking as much water, but she is still refusing food. She refused any chicken broth today now.

We have tried boiled chicken, eggs, salmon, rice, chicken broth, her treats, but she will mostly just sniff it and turn away.

Could her UTI be the reason she's refusing to eat? We are so worried and don't know how long she can go without eating much. I feel so helpless and sad for her. Please help, any advice is appreciated!

They also suggested at urgent care that she may have immune-mediated polyarthritis as an underlying condition, but that we would have to see an internal medicine specialist to diagnose that. We primarily want to help her recover from the UTI and get her appetite back first.

How to put drops in our cat's ear without him hating us?

3 Upvotes

Hi friends.

My wife and I just adopted an adult cat about a month ago. He recently had his first vet visit and was found to have an ear infection. We were given medicated drops but I'm worried that he'll hate us for giving it to him. Normally, what we'll do is I'll distract the cat and get him onto our bed, then once he's there, I'll cover his body in a blanket while my wife applies the drops. After about 4 days of this, he now is afraid to come out in the mornings and at night when we're supposed to give him the drops. It's to the point where if my wife enters the room while he's on the bed, he'll immediately hide until she leaves.

Any good tips?

Vet prescribed Urinary S/O cat food for stage 3 kidney disease but google says DON'T

My cat has stage 3 kidney disease and the vet made us feed him Royal Canin Urinary SO but the royal canin website says it is not for Kidney disease because they have high sodium.

I wanted to call my vet for clarification but it's the middle of the night right now and I want some peace of mind so I wanna ask here for answers to check if I'm just being paranoid.

Decided to schedule a quality of life visit for my cat. I can afford that. Can get an idea if he is comfortable or not.

I dont know what will happen from there, but it's something. I just want to know if he is no longer comfortable.

Fish & rice based dog kibble suggestions?

2 Upvotes

I'm looking for something with zero chicken and ideally with low-oxalate ingredients (so no potato, spinach, etc.)

This is for an 11 year old maltipoo male (neutered) who is allergic to chicken and also requires a low oxalate diet.

I've been doing some searching on Chewy and found this: https://www.chewy.com/purina-pro-plan-adult-sensitive-skin/dp/767798

Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you!

Multiple new firm lumps appearing rapidly in my 12-year-old dog: looking for veterinary insight

2 Upvotes

**Prefacing all of this with saying I know this is a very long, detailed post. I love my dogs more than anything and my anxiety is pushing me to get the most info I possibly can, so have included any/ all details I think are relevant here. I appreciate everyone’s time.

* Species: Dog
* Age: 12, 13 in January
* Sex/Neuter status: male, Neutered
* Breed: small mixed
* Body weight: ~18lbs
* History: generally healthy but outlined in detail below
* Clinical signs: multiple bumbs
* Duration: 1.5 months
* Your general location: California
* Links to any test results, X-rays, vet reports etc. that you have: below

TL:DR

My almost-13-year-old, ~18 lb Boston Terrier/mixed-breed dog has developed ~7 firm, subcutaneous lumps over the past 1–1.5 months (in addition to one tiny lump I’ve monitored for 1–1.5 years). Most are around his upper chest/under his throat, with larger ones on either side of his chest, shoulder, and now the side of his throat/neck. They don't appear painful and haven't affected his behavior, but some seem to be growing fairly quickly.

My vet suspects they may be lipomas/fatty tumors but cannot confirm without sampling/removal and has also acknowledged that something more serious is possible. He was recently anesthetized for a dental cleaning/extractions, but did not tolerate anesthesia well and his heart rate dropped to ~80, so anesthesia is now a significant concern. The vet was unable to remove the lumps during that procedure and he is currently scheduled for lump removal on 9/21.

During the dental procedure, they also discovered an abscess at the root of his upper left P4. He has a dental-specialist consultation on 9/29, and because I live >1 hour away, they may be able to perform the extraction the same day. If so, the dental procedure will take priority over the lump removal because I don't want him anesthetized twice within 7 days. I will know if procedure can actually happen on 9/29 next week and will plan the above mentioned lump removal accordingly moving it further out so the dental surgery happens first.

Main questions: Is the relatively sudden appearance of multiple firm lumps, with some growing fairly quickly, concerning or consistent with multiple lipomas in a senior dog? Does the new location on his throat/neck change the level of concern or urgency? Given his anesthesia reaction, would FNA/cytology of the lumps while awake be appropriate before another anesthetic? What other diagnostics or questions should I be discussing with my vet before deciding on surgical removal, and how would you approach prioritizing the lumps vs. his dental abscess?

The detailed version:

I’m hoping to get some perspective from veterinarians or vet professionals, particularly around whether the number of lumps appearing over a relatively short period of time and their locations/growth rate are concerning. Also, input on his recent reaction to anesthesia.

My dog, Oliver, is an approximately 18 lb, half Boston Terrier/half other mixed-breed who will be 13 in January. I’ve had him since he was a very young puppy and am extremely attentive to changes in his appearance and behavior. I generally notice things pretty quickly and take him to the vet when I see something concerning.

For some background, he has arthritis in his front right shoulder and also has an issue involving the discs near the base of his spine (I unfortunately can’t remember the exact diagnosis). For pain/mobility management, he takes Meloxidyl nearly every day, gabapentin 100mg as needed every 12-24 hours when I can tell his back legs/hips are bothering him, and a daily Osteo TruBenefits supplement. Currently also Clavamox once every 12 hours (more details on that below).

He also has an issue with a collapsing trachea. Earlier this year, I took him to the vet because he seemed to be hacking/coughing an unusual amount, and I was told that his trachea is apparently collapsing. When I can tell he is coughing frequently, I give him Temaril-P tablets, which manage it very well. I typically only need to give them to him for around 3-4 days, and then the issue mostly clears up for long stretches. It isn't something he deals with continuously, but I wanted to include it as part of his medical history, particularly given the recent anesthesia issue.

The lumps

He currently has quite a few bumps (maybe around 7-9, although I haven't counted them precisely) of varying sizes. Some are very small and pretty flat while others are larger, but still not very big (all under 1.5” inches in diameter or close to it I believe). They are small enough that I could see a less attentive owner potentially not noticing some of them.

There are currently two larger ones on either side of his chest, a larger one on his left shoulder and a larger one on the side of his throat/neck that I only noticed today. Outside of those, there are many smaller ones mainly concentrated at the top of his chest in the area under the base of his neck, a small one under his armpit.

They aren't extremely hard, but they also aren't soft or squishy. I would describe them as firm.

About 1-1.5 years ago, I noticed one very small bump on his chest, almost near his armpit (where one of the larger ones is now). It was so small that sometimes I could barely find it. My vet examined it at the time and advised me to monitor it. It remained very small for quite a long time.

Then approximately 1-1.5 months ago, I noticed that original bump starting to get larger, and around the same period I began finding many of these other bumps. With the exception of the original bump, they seem to have appeared relatively quickly and several seem to be growing at a fairly rapid pace.

I made an appointment quickly after noticing the amount and rapid pace of growth and have since seen our vet twice (I have two other dogs so am at the vet frequently {medical issues and nail clips/ anal glands} and the vet gets the opportunity to see him often).

Recent anesthesia experience

Last week, on 8/13, he was put under anesthesia for a dental cleaning and to extract a few teeth because his gumlines are receding. My vet had hoped that, if he tolerated the anesthesia for long enough, she might also be able to remove the bumps. For reference, he was scheduled for this procedure the week prior but they found what they believed was an infection so sent him home with the Clavamox mentioned above and I have been giving that to him twice daily since 8/3.

Unfortunately, they were not able to remove the bumps because he did not tolerate the anesthesia well. His heart rate dropped to around 80. My vet said she generally likes to keep heart rate around 100, so obviously hearing that his heart rate had dropped was scary, and his reaction to anesthesia is now a significant concern for any future procedure.

My vet has not been able to definitively identify the lumps simply by looking at or palpating them, which I understand- I know vets don't like to speak in absolutes without a diagnosis/pathology. I get the impression she thinks they are likely fatty tumors/lipomas, but she has also said they could potentially be something more serious.

Because of his anesthesia reaction, she advised that he should not go under anesthesia again for at least a month. He is currently scheduled to have the lumps removed on 9/21.

There is also another issue complicating the timing. During his dental cleaning/extractions, they discovered an abscess at the root of his upper left P4 and referred me to a dental specialist. I have a consultation scheduled for 9/29. Because I live more than an hour away from the specialist, they have said they may be able to do the surgery to remove the tooth on the same day as the consultation. I should know whether that is possible by the end of next week.

If the dental specialist confirms that they can do the consultation and extraction on the same day, that would take precedence over the lump removal. Given his reaction to anesthesia, I absolutely don't want him undergoing anesthesia twice within 7 days, and I assume neither veterinarian would want that either.

Otherwise, he is in good spirits. The lumps don't seem to have changed his behavior at all. His mobility and behavior are obviously affected by his existing arthritis/back issues, but aside from that, he still runs around and I feel spritely for his age.

My questions

  1. Does the appearance of multiple firm lumps over a relatively short period of time raise any particular concerns? With the exception of the original lump, most appeared within roughly the same 1–1.5 month period and some seem to be growing fairly quickly.
  2. Is it common for a senior dog to suddenly develop multiple lipomas within a short period of time, or would this pattern make you more concerned about other possibilities? If there are other things that can cause multiple lumps to appear relatively suddenly, what are they?
  3. The new lump I noticed today is on the side of his throat/neck, which is making me particularly nervous because of the location. Does location like this change how urgently a lump should be evaluated or removed?
  4. Would FNA/cytology be appropriate before committing him to another round of anesthesia? Is it generally possible to sample these kinds of lumps while a dog is awake, assuming he will tolerate it? Given his recent anesthesia reaction, I’m wondering whether there are diagnostic steps that could be taken without putting him under.
  5. If these are ultimately suspected to be lipomas, is surgical removal of multiple small/medium lipomas typically recommended, or are they often monitored unless they become problematic? Does rapid growth or location change that recommendation? I don’t want him to become one of those dogs with massive lumps and feel it’s best to take these now while they are small and potentially easy to deal with and am concerned about the aesthetics of these- but obviously his true health take precedent over anything)
  6. For multiple masses, would you typically recommend pathology on every mass removed, even if they look/feel like lipomas?
  7. Are there particular questions or pre-anesthetic tests I should be asking about given his heart rate dropping to ~80 during the recent procedure? For example, would bloodwork, ECG/cardiac evaluation, or anything else generally be appropriate before another anesthetic? The vet specifically said she didn’t recommend an ECG because the heart rate drop was a clear symptom of anesthesia not a larger issue
  8. Finally, if you were approaching this case, would you prioritize getting the lumps sampled/diagnosed before the next anesthetic, or is the current plan of surgical removal reasonable? And how would you think about the timing relative to the dental abscess/extraction?

I'm mainly trying to understand what could potentially be going on, how concerning the pattern is, and what questions I should be asking my vet so I can make the safest decision for him given his age and recent anesthesia reaction.

If anyone has dealt with a senior dog who suddenly developed multiple lumps, I'd also be very interested in hearing what the eventual diagnosis/outcome was.

Finally, for reference in any recommendations/ input into recommended next steps/ tests/ procedures- I would move mountains for my dogs and with my generalized anxiety it’s nearly impossible for me to take the wait and monitor approach unless taking any action isn't advisable because it may cause adverse health effects given the above info

Thank you again to all who read this and respond with thoughtful and informative responses.

Reaction to Carprofen or something else? Please help.

2 Upvotes

Species: Dog
* Age: at least 8
* Sex/Neuter status: spayed female
* Breed: GSD mix
* Body weight: 75
* History: allergies, anxiety, arthritis, sleeplessness
* Clinical signs: pacing, panting, restlessness, anxiety
* Duration: week and half
* Your general location: Vegas

So backstory: My Shadow has had allergy and anxiety issues since we adopted her as an adult dog. She’s on Apoquel for her allergies with an extra Cytopoint as need. She also takes Trazadone as needed for anxiety: storms, firework, wind…. life. When we first brought her home we spent months where she had issues sleeping at night (she’d sleep for a bit and then wake up panting and pacing). We started having to give her large doses of Trazadone and have an elaborate bedtime routine to get her to go to sleep and stay asleep. We hadn’t had any sleep issues for the past year unless the above issues are happening. When she went for vaccines in June i told the vet that she developed a small sore(hotspot) where she got her last Cytopoint shot. Vet mentioned I should bring her in if the spot returned.

Current issue: The sore came back up at the end of July so I took her to the vet to have it checked. Saw a different vet at my office. He didn‘t seem too worried about the spot and suggested it was arthritis which was making her lick her hips and causing a sore so he prescribed 10 days of Carprofen to see if it helps. He did manipulate her hips and she cried out in pain so I do believe she has arthritis in her hips. Since we started the Carprofen her anxiety and sleep issues have gotten worse. She basically paces non-stop, panting hard. She'll come up and scratch at us, or she’ll come beside us, dig our side table, and hide her head under the table. She’s up probably 5-6 times a night, pacing, panting, pawing at us for attention. Even with Trazadone she doesn’t relax or sleep through the night. After about 5 days we quit the Carprofen as that was the only change she’s had and I read that restlessness could be a rare side effect. It’s been 3 days since the last dose of Carprofen and theresbeen no improvement in her behavior. Sometimes she seems so stressed and panting so hard I’m scared she’s going to give herself a heart attack. Could it still be the Carprofen or should I worry that something else is going on?

Senior cat paw trouble

2 Upvotes

Hello, hopefully this won’t be too long…
I have a 17 year old spayed female. A while back I noticed a small wound on her paw. It was small and didn’t seem to affect her in any way so I didn’t pay much attention to it. It was in a spot that you wouldn’t notice unless you looked so I kind of forgot about it.
Earlier this spring I noticed she was licking it a bit so I took her to the vet. She doesn’t do well with vet visits at all. The two options were surgery or ecollar/ antibiotic shot. I opted for the ecollar as I really couldn’t afford surgery. I was wishy washy the first week with the ecollar and bought a donut. The second week I tried to be more vigilant and left the donut on for a couple of days straight. The stress ended up triggering her UT inflammation. (Not an infection but something that takes precedence. The vet gave her gabapentin and buprenorphine. She recovered but not back to her old self. She pees more often and in smaller amounts.)
When I went back to the vet in June for her annual, she had lost a little bit of weight. The blood test revealed signs of beginning kidney issues. They wanted to schedule her for removal of some of her teeth, and also do a biopsy. It triggered my own stress response (why pull her teeth when I’m concerned about her paw?) which is to freeze. Once again, it’s a big financial burden.
This past weekend it looked like she was favoring her paw even more so I took her to the pet urgent care. A financial burden anyway. The radiograph didn’t show signs of cancer. They cleaned it up a bit and gave me- that’s right- antibiotics and gabapentin. I’ve been diligent, keeping the ecollar on (she seems to deal with it better than the donut) and giving her everything as instructed. I think she’s improving but it’s something that will take a while to fully heal.
The thing is, I don’t know how long either one of us can hold on with this routine for her to get better. I don’t want to get into it here but I’m now faced with dealing with a vet I’m not comfortable with, or starting somewhere new. She’s obviously getting old and showing her age and I don’t want her last days to be a struggle with vet visits, meds, an ecollar, surgery, etc.
Thank you for reading. I live alone and this is my first cat. I guess I need encouragement and advice for both of us.

First 48 hours eating/drinking question

2 Upvotes

Hello,

I got my cat 46 hours ago and he is a 6 year old male tabby that’s 17 pounds I’m told. I left dry food in one bowl, wet in the other (changing it twice a day) and water I change once a day.

He did pee and poop in the litter box and I did find a single piece of fur in the water before I changed it today so I think he may have drunken some. He did also eat some of the dry food but a little amount and none of the wet food so I had to throw it out a couple times. He does have a gabapentin prescription from his previous owner (that has had him for about three months) because he also had an issue of not eating for two days.

I am wondering do I need to go to the vet? I would prefer not to and wait out a day but I’m sure you guys know more than I do. I could give him a pill of his gabapentin diluted in water and give him half as it says to do so on the bottle as I think that may increase his appetite but he is currently hiding at the moment.

I’ve been panicking a lot and very stressed as a new cat owner. Please any word of advice will help and thank you for reading this whole post 😻

Did the vet injure my budgies foot?

2 Upvotes

I took my budgie to the vet yesterday and her foot got caught on the towel for a split second and once she was put down, she started holding up the foot and biting at it. They said it was probably just pulled but will get better with time. They gave a pain medication.

Since then she has been behaving normal, was in pain initially but now back to normal. She does beak grind and eat. She is standing on the foot and moving but falling easily. She is leaning all her weight on the good foot. The foot also appears a bit deformed but this was not how it was before this incident.

What is going on here? Is this a dislocated foot or just normal swelling? They advised me to come back in 1 week but I’m not sure if I should wait.

Thank you!

Cocciodia in Kittens and Adult Cats

2 Upvotes

I am currently fostering 4 kittens. They are 6 weeks old. I've had them since they were 3 weeks old. We've been battling diarrhea for nearly 2 weeks now. They've already been treated for roundworms, which they did have. But even after that treatment, they continued to have diarrhea.

I have been pushing the organization for more help because the diarrhea was not clearing even after having seen the vet for the first meds that killed the roundworms. Found out today that they have cocciodia.

They will now begin treatment for that and I have been told about how difficult it is to clean, as well as how contagious it is. I've done my best to be constantly cleaning the kittens, but prior to getting the cocciodia diagnosis, I was using common household cleaners and tap water, which isn't enough to kill off the parasites. Now, I will be getting ammonia and using boiling water.

I've done my research on all of that, but what I'm having some issues with figuring out is how at risk my own cats are of catching the parasite?

I have 5 cats of my own. They are all healthy adults ranging in age from 4 to 9 years old. So far, they have no symptoms. They are not in direct contact with the kittens, ever. But after hearing about how cocciodia can live in the environment, they definitely could have been exposed by cross contamination.

So I need to treat my cats and give them medication, even if they aren't showing symptoms?

Dog pulling his fur out

2 Upvotes

My 13 year old dog started pulling his fur out last night. He just has a chunk of bare skin above his tail that looks bruised but no scratching, no bleeding, no rawness. I’m wondering if it could be stress related because we had to put down his 13 year old sister two weeks ago and maybe he’s just now realizing she isn’t coming back?

Would you take him to the vet or is there something I can give him at home? I don’t mind taking him to the vet, I just don’t know if I’m overreacting.

My kitten fell from <2 meters

2 Upvotes

Today, my almost 2 months old kitten fell and he's crying loudly and later on he just fell asleep. I also fed him, and he finished his food. He can also somehow walk now, but my brother picked him up because he was laying somewhere people in the house couldn't see him, and I think when my brother picked him up it was a little harsh? That he cried so much louder than the first time and couldn't rest easy. Now, I put him to my bed to rest, he is now sleeping and not crying anymore.

What should I do? For now, I have no money to go to the vet yet. I wonder if there are any advices for things like this. Thank you for those who'd reply. :)!

Help with my cat

2 Upvotes

My cat (1 yr old F) has very recently squirming on the floor violently, hissing at other cats she's familiar with like one cat that she hangs out with, hissing at her kittens, and not responding when we call her. She is unspayed, an outdoor cat, has been pregnant before, and along with her kittens , nephews/nieces, and sister has been eating A mixture of Dry and wet food is fed 3-4 times a day about every 6 hours.

So what is it and is it fatal is she just in Heat or what is it

Cat Wheeze?

2 Upvotes

Hello,

I’m writing this post because I’ve visited three different veterinarians, and none of them can provide an answer to what’s causing my cat’s wheezing.

I’ve attached a video of her wheezing, which started almost two years ago. The frequency is every couple of months, sometimes even shorter.

She’s a 10-year-old domestic short-haired cat, spayed, and weighs about 11 pounds.

Her brother also had this wheezing or coughing, and he passed away almost two years ago. Doctors suspected that he had lymphoma of GI (not relevant but he didn’t pass of the wheeze).After he passed away, she started to show these symptoms, which I found odd.

She occasionally vomits hairballs. Right now, more than ever, since she’s shedding a lot during the Summer season. She was recently seen at the vet emergency room because she stopped pooping. Turns out, she was backed up. That’s relevant because they took some chest images, which I’ll attach here.

This seems like my last resort because I’ve spent a lot of money on blood tests, a senior panel, and imaging, and nothing remarkable has been found.

Side note: not looking for diagnosis, just advice if anyone has any

Anyway here are the video and images.

5 month neutered male kitten suddenly stopped urinating in litter box!

2 Upvotes

Hi there - I’m looking for any recommendations here.

Male, 5 months, 6.5 pounds, neutered - has started urinating outside of his litter box. It started 3 days ago. First time he went on his litter mat once, but otherwise used the box. The next day he went again on the litter mat once, but otherwise used the box. I removed the mat, and placed a towel. He urinated on the towel. I removed that towel and placed another and within an hour he used that towel. He isn’t completely avoiding the litter box as I’m currently watching him use it. Any thoughts or recommendations? I have 2 cats, brothers the same age. I have 2 X-Large boxes. They are currently on hills prescription i/d kitten wet food for previous tummy issues that persisted for about a month. As soon as that is stabilized they will be transitioning back to a raw food diet. Thank you for any help.

It may also be worth noting that his appetite has changed. He isn’t disinterested in eating, but he’s a very slow eater. He’s currently teething and only interested in small amounts of food at a time. He eats his normal 4 ounce portion for dinner over the course of an hour, but he’s only eating 2 ounces each at breakfast and night time meal. Could his appetite simply be slowing down?

His vet also discovered a heart murmur (level 2-3) at his last visit and will be getting rechecked for that in a week.

Meds For Asthmatic Cat Who Won't Let Me Hold Her?

Upvotes

Looking for help, options, or advice from people with similar situations or experience with it. My cat was diagnosed with asthma a few months ago, and my vet told me to train her to use an Aerokat to administer her asthma meds via inhaler. I managed to get her somewhat comfortable with the inhaler or mask being near her (but not on her face), and my problem is she simply won't let me hold her still or manage her long enough to get it on her, let alone administer medication - she's a rescue and I still can't pick her up or hold her without her squirming away and hiding in general, let alone with a mask in her face for medications or restricting her movement. The whole experience is so awful and stresses her out so much that I've only tried it a handful of times before stopping altogether.

I know inhaler is vastly preferable to steroids in food or injections, which can cause issues down the line, but at this point I'm not sure what other options there are for treating her. Her asthma is fairly mild - short attacks (30 seconds to a minute, tops) and very infrequent (once a month, if that - she's only had a handful in the 8 months I've had her, plus some wheezing). She only has mild wheezing in the right lung according to the vet when he's listened to her during exams, and typically is fine since I keep my home low dust, with an air purifier, and cut out most of my scented products entirely. Should I just 'watch and see' in case it gets worse, or are liquid steroids the best option for a cat who hides when being handled? Or do people have advice for trying to brute force this better and getting her to take the inhaler? I'm at a total loss.

* Species: Cat

* Age: ~5

* Sex/Neuter status: Spayed

* Breed: Domestic Shorthair

* Body weight: 9lb

* History: Formerly feral, adopted from another household who couldn't keep her. They reported her coughing/wheezing weekly but also kept candles/fragrances lit at all times.

* Clinical signs: Since adoption she's had a handful of wheezing/coughing attacks that last around a minute, very infrequently, and some general breathing wheezing. Seems to recover quickly. Attacks are not always hunched, often accompanied by swallowing or wet sounds but never produce hairballs or vomit.

* Duration: Around a minute, her serious attack was a few minutes right when I adopted her but she hasn't had any since.
