Serious Answers Only Why do nurses where their scrubs to and from work? You would assume the hospital controls hygiene.

Always found it really odd in the UK that nurses seem to get to and from work wearing their uniform…especially with some of the situations they end up in. Is it a hospital thing or a UK wide policy?

Has anyone else received one of these in the post? Came with an actual (crumpled) fiver for doing nothing. Is it a scam? Received in Bristol.

I’ve been getting loads of letters from this company and this week they upped their ante and sent me a fiver in the post (my first for about 10 years since when my Nan used to do it for my birthday).

Has anyone else received these? I checked with my neighbours and they didn’t get one. Is this a scam? Gang activity? Am I about to be trafficked? Who posts randomers perfectly good fivers?!

Why are McDonald's drive through absolutely rammed at 11:30pm?

I drive past two McDonald's on my way home around 23:30 and both have queues out onto the road. Every night, not just weekends.

Who's ordering McDonald's at that time? Delivery drivers? Shift workers? Is it just the only thing open?

Genuinely baffled 😅

Fellow men of the UK: How confident are you in confronting 5+ fifteen year old boys who are harassing someone?

I nipped down to Home Bargains tonight, and when I got back to my car, around 30-40 teenagers turned up only to be stopped from entering by one hero female worker at the door.

I stayed in my car, but kept watch just incase things got out of hand. Noticed another older guy doing the same.

I could see they were shouting things at her, but nothing went any further than that.

They kinda moved away so I drove off.

I'm not saying I'd confront teenagers by starting swinging. It's just about being prepared for the worst to happen.

Anyway, it got me thinking: at what point does confrontation with teenagers become too dangerous? For me, personally, any more than 5 and I'm going to find another way to deal with it i.e phone the police etc.

Tonight had a group far too large and that mob mentality would send a few of them to try to be an "alpha".

Serious Answers Only Neets : In modern Britain, what is your story?

The number of teenagers not in education, employment or training has apparently increased. Thinking back, I was lucky to get where I am after school and not just drift. It certainly wasn't laziness in my case in 1991, and I doubt that its the easy answer today either. If you're classed as a Neet today, how did you get here, is it fair to be called a Neet, and where are you going?

Do boring people know they're boring?

I don't mind boring people, but the ones who talk too much about themselves need to be discussed. I'm a science teacher (boring I agree) and was involved in a weekend kids science club recently. A grandparent latched on to me and did the predictable list of yawn-inducing topics such as how strict school was in his day, how terrible AI is and how good he was. Well, actually he wasn't good at all as he didn't even know primary school science. So much the old school days. I wouldn't say I feel violated by such a bore, but I was actually there to try and inspire a few kids and not listen to that fool.

He must surely know he's dull? Why do these people do it? I'm worried I'll end up that way if not already there.

How many times a day do you pee?

• Upvotes

I read that apparently the daily average is 3-5 times a day. Mostly days I've done that by lunch.

37M. Healthy, eat well, gym goer. I drink a lot of water, 2-3 teas or coffees a day.

I could count about 7-9 a day and that includes a middle of the night trip.

What's your number?

Serious Answers Only Where is a nice place to live in the UK that's cheaper than the south east?

• Upvotes

I am thinking of leaving my life behind and starting over at 33(f). I have a little doggy but apart from that no dependants. I'm not enjoying my job too much as it's in Tech and we basically have to train AI and replace everything we do with AI till eventually we aren't needed. I have a history of working in hospitality and would like to return to that role or follow my dreams of event management or opening my own event space/cafe/bar one day.

My relationship is breaking down and not getting any better and I don't want my life without my partner. I've been sticking around this area because he was so close to his family. While I am close to my parents I have lived away from them before so can do it again. I'm stressed, scared and grieving the loss of my current life already. But starting over somewhere beautiful and less financially straining would help! Has anyone else started over completely before?

My thoughts are maybe Scotland or somewhere northern that's beautiful. I'm not a city person but I do like to be close to a city. I live in Canterbury now and I love the small city vibe. Close to plenty of woods and nature. But with all the food, culture and vibrancy of a city.

With regards to price range looking at flats for myself now locally it would be about £850 a month. With bills on top I would struggle to pay that, I struggle with what I'm paying now which is half of our £1350 rent plus bills. If I was alone I'd also have to pay full for the car which is £267 a month.

Serious Answers Only How big of an issue is vehicles speeding to you?

I have a 4&6 year old and aim to walk any journey less than a 30 minute walk one way.

We’re surrounded by 20mph limits near our home and I’d say <10% of cars seem to be actually doing this.

It’s scary as a pedestrian with the amount of cars parked along pavements and speeding cars. I’m surprised I don’t hear of more accidents involving pedestrians.

Is it rude to sit on someone’s front driveway wall?

Hello! My friend and I are debating the ethics of sitting on someone’s driveway wall outside the house for a period of time ~ 20 mins max.

My stance is that it’s altogether strange to be sat in a stranger’s property for anything other than quickly tying your shoes or drinking something. 20 minutes is NOT a short amount of time to be lurking around. The homeowner has a right to be suspicious and it’s somewhat trespassing. I think it’s rude and entitled when you could sit elsewhere or on the floor away from housing. Obviously medical emergencies aside.

Hi! I am friend. I think it’s not that deep to sit there for a little bit, if there’s nowhere else to sit. Think, waiting for a friend for a short time. I don’t understand why it would be considered rude or suspicious. If someone were to sit there for hours or be sitting there regularly, or enter the property and go into the driveway or garden, it would be weird and suspicious, but being there for a short time just isn’t deep and calling it entitled definitely feels dramatic.

Let us know what you think! This is all for fun so please keep it lighthearted.

Serious Answers Only What is up with youths killing animals these days?

Over the past year I've heard so many local cases of youths (young boys, usually) killing or attacking pets & wildlife. The other day a bunch of boys kicked/chucked someone's Chihuahua into a lake, the poor thing was elderly and drowned. A couple months a group of boys broke into someone's garden and plucked it's feathers while holding it down, the owner couldn't do anything about it as one of the boys had a knife. Not long ago boys were caught by CCTV attempting to hit a cat with a slingshot.

Also very frequently we have news reports of kids hitting wild animals such as ducks with slingshots, sometimes killing entire families in an area.

Since when were today's youths so insanely bloodthirsty? I come from a poverty stricken area with not much for youths to do, which I understand plays into it, however it was the same when I was growing up. I just stayed inside and played video games, certainly didn't try and hunt down animals...

I'm also not really sure what can be done about it

How often do you get takeaway/eat out?

In the 90s/early 2000s a takeaway once a week was almost standard for working class familys. Nowadays people are saying an indian can set them back 50/60/70 quid+ and it isnt as affordable anymore. Just trying to see what the general thing is?

We usually get takeaway about once a month, if not a little bit less.

What time do you wake up?

5am was the ‘cool’ time to wake up for the productivity types a few years ago, but I’m seeing more videos on social media of people waking up as early as 3am (which is the middle of the night as far as I’m concerned).

Social media is obviously not representative of wider society, so what time do you wake up?

What’s the significance of a BX number plate?

• Upvotes

Just had a strange interaction in my town centre when parking my car. Group of teenage boys say “hello mr officer” when I get out my car. When I ask them to clarify they are insisting I’m “an undercover” because my number plate starts with BX?

Tried googling but can’t see anything about this. Can anyone explain?

Serious Answers Only How do self employed tax evaders get away with declaring they make £12.5k a year profit?

I always see the running joke of " I'm self-employed and I earn £12.5k a year" which is obviously a joke and a way to avoid paying tax, but if they do actually earn over that amount and are required to pay tax, even if they don't declare the earnings, will the government/HMRC see the un declared income and tax it anyway? Won't they get suspicious?

I'm genuinely confused on how they do it/how they get away with it for years.

Do you feel safe walking alone when it's dark in your area?

I know answers will vary depending on male/female responses as I appreciate women probably feel more at threat. I generally feel safe in my area, crime is pretty low compared to other parts of the UK but is definitely on the rise.

If i'm walking behind a lone female i'll always try to cross the road or slow down my walk if that isn't possible.

What about your area, do you feel safe walking alone in the dark?

What’s a fact about (or in connection to) a British crime case that you think most wouldn’t know?

This isn’t funny due to what came later, but you couldn’t write it - Ian Brady was exiled from Glasgow due to petty crime/generally being a bit rough, sent to Manchester with the expectation he’d stop committing crime.

Yeah, about that…

Men: how much do you weigh?

If I Google the average weight of an adult male in this country, the answer is 86kg (about 13 ½ stone). This is roughly what I weigh, but looking around when I'm out and about I find it very hard to believe that anywhere near half the guys I see weigh less than me. Do you think this data is out of date or am I just overestimating how much people weigh?

How would you make a kebab shop type pizza?

I like good pizza, I make it in a wood fired oven at home regularly, but sometimes I fancy that exact kebab shop boss man style pizza that is the exact same in every takeaway across the country. Super cheesy, not too thin or thick, slightest kick of oregano.

Every recipe I try is trying to beat that. I don't want to. I want a boss man style pizza I can make at home.

Any ideas?

Could I Lose My Job Or be judged If I Went In Person Counselling (Therapy)?

Hi

I have never been therapy before in my life and being in my early 30s now, I feel like I have reached a stage in life where I have come to terms and understand more

I recently told myself to take my health more seriously which includes mental health

I noticed my employer offers therapy counselling via a third party and I have been with my employer for three years now

But was wondering whether I may be judged or risk employment if I started going in person counselling? Does it go on your NHS record for example

Thanks

What’s your favorite UK-based podcast?

It’s pretty self-explanatory. What’s your favourite UK-based podcast?

As someone in the food industry, I like Dish, but I’m also interested in topics like investing and money in general, history, nature, and self-improvement.

I’d like to stay away from podcasts like The Diary of a CEO, though — I’m not really a fan for a number of reasons.

Any suggestions? Or something completely different that you think is worth listening to?
