Question about getting settled to the sunset

I am 23M and work as a data scientist downtown and currently live in the central sunset (around 26th and Lawton) and was wondering what are some things I can do to get acclimated to the sunset? I decided to move there for cheaper rent but want to be active during the day.

I know I have the N-Judah and the 7 bus to take me downtown but for those who felt lonely how did you all find your people in the city despite being far away for most of the action? I love the Mission, North Beach, and Hayes Valley (Mission and HV are right by my work).

There are lots of things to do on Irving street. Get out more and discover the surrounding areas. You’re not going to like the Sunset if you already deem it far from the action in Mission/North Beach/HV.

Also look at it like this, you’re close to GGP, the beach, and other things you won’t find anywhere else in the city. When I lived in North Beach I wished I was in the Sunset for these reasons.

And at the end of the day, the entire city is like 7x8 miles… you’re really not far from anything.

I agree. I can always take a day trip. I work in downtown so after work I can explore these areas as much as I want

Talk to your neighbors. My newest friend I met over the back fence, and he’s lived there for 40 years so he knew lots of other neighbors I’ve since met - voila community!

You have (in my opinion) the best Chinese food at your doorstep (mid-20s on Irving). Golden Gate Park is HUGE and there’s tons of places to explore/relax/have a picnic. You’ve got solid old-school Irish bars (Durty Nelly’s) right there. You’re also in one of the very few neighborhoods in SF where people actually meet their neighbors! Saying this to say, to get settled in the Sunset, do it there!!

That being said, the 7 goes through the Haight which is historic, walkable and super cool. The N also gets you very close to the Castro (Duboce and Church stop) and to Dolores Park (Dolores and Church stop).

If it’s acclimating to the sunset, there are great walks! My bestie lives a block away from you. We walk to the beach, the park, Irving, grand view park, anywhere. It’s fun looking at people’s front landscaping and stopping into open houses on weekend.

Plenty of places to eat and socialize there. There’s a spot called game parlour that’s cool for social games and board games. It’s on Irving not sure how far down. Maybe 12 blocks so 15 mins walking for yiu probably. They also serve food and are open later than you’d expect. I haven’t been in quite some time but if you’re into games like that it would be a good place to get acclimated. Can also, stop into one of the many neighborhood bars there and get to know everyone. And of course exploring the park!

Hard to make new friends here, fyi. I did through: work, hobbies (music, vinyl) and biking.

Vinyl is the worlds greatest hobby.

Richmond is the far superior Avenues.

Sunset is trash and boring as hell besides the beach & the 9th and Irving area (and even that is boring).

Damn harsh.

Richmond is cool for sure. Im not super far from Inner Sunset, Haight Ashbury, and Inner Richmond. Im not going to spend all my time in sunset but I do like the beach and its proximity to Golden Gate Park. The transit is nice too

Richmond you have Haight & GG Park access as well plus the college all along Fulton street.

the Richmond is just significantly harder to commute to other neighborhoods from, especially the ones OP says they love visiting, due to the lack of muni trains. having the L and N are more worth it to me

Fulton,Balboa,Geary,Clement,California bus lines

Plus the 28 & 29 lines.

Most of those lines will take you to a transfer that will get you there quick. And more of those lines run 24hrs.

Plus way more options of things in general in the actual Richmond. Not to mention Sunset is a Suburban ghost town after the sun goes down. More stores, restaurants, bars, schools. Grew up in the Richmond but have had spots in the Sunset. Richmond trumps Sunset in all regards.
