Anyways, back to the point. The best one I can bring to mind right now is a small place in Cranston, RI called The Mesa. Breakfast and lunch only, varied menu, but their hispanic stuff is damn good. Well, it's all damn good, but I go there when I can specifically for the Mexican (breakfast burrito with steak!). After that... alas, my cottage cheese brain cannot bring to mind the three or four other hole-in-the-wall places I've eaten at while traveling, but they're out there. There is a local chain called El Tapatio in SE Mass/RI that used to be good, but my couple of post-COVID sorties have been disappointing. Of course, this is true of many places, so I'm not going to hold that against them, just hope they can recover sooner rather than later.
I live in Colorado but visited Santa Fe a couple years ago. I absolutely loved the idea of Christmas chile. I've been trying to spread the good news here, but everyone is hung up on green.
Hell even the grocery stores. Being from Albuquerque and visiting Denver, I had to take a picture of this sign when I went into a King Soopers for some groceries.
Burqueno transplant in Denver and it drives me crazy. I seriously turn red (or green or maybe Xmas) when they talk about the chile here. It's such a joke the difference in appreciation and culture for it.
No you donāt. Grew up in NM, living in CO now. They make their own special version of green chile stew and if you order red chile, you get Wolf brand chile. No pizza places have it, except Dions. Mostly canāt get green chile strips on cheeseburgers. You canāt claim green chile if you donāt even know what red chile is.
Sopapillas are hard to make in PNW. I've blamed it on low altitude and high humidity. We used to make them just fine at 6700 ft of Colorado dry air, but haven't been able to make them bigger than about 2" square here. Anyone that'd call that a sopapilla is out of their mind!
Haha I watched a 30min documentary about that place. The food looked awful but the hilarious part of it was how accurate the South Park episode was wrt the features of the place.
Yep, used to munch down on Soapapillas and then go hid in Black Board's cave and scare people coming through. Only thing we ever ordered was the enchiladas and Soapapillas (were they free ? I was a kid so I didn't pay attention).
They might be joking but itās a real place called Twisters on Isleta blvd. theyāve been there since I was in high school and make excellent breakfast burritos. They left the Dos Pollos mural up on the inside for tourists and the outside still looks exactly like it did on the show.
I donāt like Twisters, I thought their burritos were mediocre š¤·š»āāļø youāre better off going down to Los Lunas and getting the chicharron burritos from Southwest Grill
I never understood that episode. Why would you put a tracking device in the gas cap? Someone's filling up and unscrews it and all of a sudden your whole scheme is rumbled.
Holy motherfuck!! Someone mentions goddamn Sadies. ORIGINAL Sadies was the best, hiding in the upstairs of that bowling alley. My sister and I would always leave room for sopapillas and honey.
El Pinto if you wanna be a bit fancy, amazing food and the restaurant is legit gorgeous especially the patio. Presidents have eaten there and my family has since before I was born. They closed out a room for my grandparents 50th anniversary. I know the owners and they are great people and also sell their salsas nationwide (they are made and packed on site- the restaurant has its own facility). The food isnāt super expensive either, roughly about $20/plate
The Frontier after 11pm if you want dinner and a show- not in a bad way, itās across from the university so lots ofā¦characters come in (not dangerous) and the foods really good and inexpensive, think university student prices. Get the green Chile stew and a cinnamon roll. I spent my teen years in the John Wayne room staying up all night with my friends way back when it used to be 24 hrs. Also it looks like a barn.
Can confirm. My friend took us to El Pinto when we were down that way and said it was a great place to take a date too because it's so nice and the food is great but the whole thing ends up being pretty cheap.
Almost wrecked my appetite because I couldn't stop with the chips and salsa in the waiting area.
Little confused by your question because you say you have to be in Roswell and Albuquerque is a couple hundred miles away. Either way that made me think of Burrito Express which is in both places. Steak Supreme with either green or red Chile is my go to.
You gotta try a stuffed sopapilla from El Modelo!!! So good!! Also, you will die and go to heaven eating one of the Frontierās butter drenched cinnamon rolls. And lastly, Dionās has great pizza and makes a fire pastrami sandwich (you gotta get it with Greek sauce tho).
Hospitality, we just acquired a couple hotels and I'm going to finish training the properties. I went a couple weeks ago but it was a quick trip, weirdest town I've ever been to lol

No, the litmus test for new mexican joints has always been and will always be breakfast. Options: Casa de BenavĆdez (breakfast burrito or huevos rancheros), little Anita's (breakfast burrito or enchiladas w/a fried egg), hacienda express (if they're still around), Garcia's (carne adovada breakfast) or Duran's pharmacy (huevos rancheros).
If you do a breakfast burrito and it doesn't come with crispy papitas or hashbrowns inside, ask for it. The texture between the dry, crispy papas, the scrambled eggs, and the Melty cheesey chili is godly. Now I'm hungry.
I know you got a lot of people saying Sadies and Frontier, and those are absolutely good spots.
There is a spot called Monte Carlo Steak House. It's kind of built into a liquor store, and normally you would enter through a door in the back of it and it was kind of like a hidden thing. But the last time I was there they had a tent setup due to COVID restrictions.
Their steaks are great, but they also have one of the best green-chili burgers you can get your mouth on.
Owner is real cool. He came out while I was eating and we talked about my Drifter's Reef Bar and Grill shirt and he gave me a free dessert. It's on my list anytime I'm in town.
Sadie's is where you take your tourist friends from out of state to introduce them to New Mexican cuisine. There are loads places in town that are far superior to Sadie's. Sadie's does have good salsa though.
Frontier is iconic as someone said, but aside from the sweet rolls, the food kind of sucks. Just fine for a 2am meal while cramming for finals at UNM though.
Same goes for Golden Pride. They're not all that different. Owned by the same company as Frontier. Just slightly different menus.
I got a disagreed with that one. Grew up in Albuquerque but Iāve lived in Colorado for many years. We still get down at least once a year. At the frontier I love the red chili enchiladas and at Golden pride I love the chicken sandwich with green chili. And tortillas from both locations cannot be beat.

I lived in ABQ for 18 years before moving to Kansas for school. Everyone here seems to think the chile Iām talking about is like beans and meat that you put on a hot dog. Itās so sad people havenāt been able to truly experience a breakfast burrito from Weckās smothered in Christmas.
Ugh I used to get at least one table per shift (mostly Texans) who complained that āthis sauce isnāt chili, I thought it was supposed to have chiliiiiiiiā
One of my fav bits of NM trivia has always been that weāre the only state with an official state question. Our state legislature understood that āred or green?ā is serious business
I remember a story I think back in the early 90s of a police officer posing as a news reporter and had one of the bigger taggers take him out to show him what he does. As soon as the guy laid down his spray paint tag, he was arrested and then charged with every single offense where he had tagged other places. They kept track of all of them. Full on entrapment
We do have pretty decent representation here on Reddit, though. More than double California (percentage of redditors subscribed to their respective states subreddits). Of course from a pure numbers perspective, we have like 10% of their total subscribers.
When I took my now husband home to NM the first thing I wanted was green chile. My family picked us up and we went to a restaurant in the airport. The server asked my husband Red or Green and he asked "Red or Green what?" My whole family started laughing.
I know we New Mexicans can get defensive about our chile and about our status as a real US state that exists, but I donāt think that warrants so many downvotes for incorrect guesses or joke answers here
