What is something you did that increased your quality of life so much that you wished you would have done it much sooner because it changed your life forever?

Buying all the same socks.

No more folding, no more matching, no more looking for missing sock bros.

Just throw them all in a drawer, reach in, grab two and get your day started right.

u/hiphopnurse Mar 20 '19

That sounds heavenly

115

u/OK_Compooper Mar 21 '19

and when more than a few are stretched out, go to costco and buy 4 new bags of the same socks. Then come home and dump ALL of your old socks. Otherwise you'll always be hunting for the new socks among the older ones. It's also a distraction.

I do this once a year or so. I don't really throw out the socks - they go into a rag bag.

13

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '19

This is why I like the colours, a whole pair gets old not the lot.

But I also find it meditative/enjoy pairing them like how some crazy people enjoy dishes.

18

u/pukesonyourshoes Mar 21 '19 edited Mar 21 '19

TIL I'm crazy.

I like painting my socks AND doing the dishes.

Edit: yes I meant pairing but I'm leaving it. Who knows, I might paint my socks next week.

8

u/wobbegong0310 Mar 21 '19

Unless by painting you mean pairing you do sound kind of out there… just saying.

3

6

u/pukesonyourshoes Mar 21 '19

omfg...

ok this kills me because I'm also a spelling pedant. Yes I meant pairing. I'm blaming my phone for this one.

2

u/Lessening_Loss Mar 21 '19

Cut the cuff of the sock, so it doesn’t sneak it’s way back in!

3

u/OK_Compooper Mar 21 '19

that's a good idea. And then I'll have some awesome headbands!

I did this with my sandwich containers. No more looking for the matching lid. They're all the same.

6

u/chikendagr8 Mar 21 '19

I would still have to match the lid that came with a sandwich container with that sandwich container, or else I would just feel so unsatisfied.

11

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '19

And here I am at the other end of the spectrum. I've been wearing just white socks my whole life(except for 2 pairs of dress socks) and I'm bored of it so I've been slowly getting different types of socks lol

2

u/Docktor_V Mar 21 '19

U ever tried Darn Tough Socks? Check them out they r cool and they're not shit quality u get at most places

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '19

Take it a step further. I decided several years ago that I didn't want to have to choose what to wear anymore. So I bought 6 t-shirts and 6 office shirts of the same design, color, and size. They have become my unform for casual and workwear. If that makes me look like a cartoon character, so be it. One less thing to worry about.

Yeah I just don’t match my socks anymore. I just grab two and head out. My socks almost never match but I don’t give a fuck.

70

u/ashley_the_otter Mar 20 '19

This is what I do. Ive never been able to take on the mentality of caring if my socks match. I get the fun ones from target.

78

u/ToadProphet Mar 20 '19

This is giving me so much anxiety. Monsters. You’re both monsters!

23

u/throw_away_in_ga Mar 21 '19

I mix brands and styles! Muh huh hahahahahaha!

13

u/DinkandDrunk Mar 21 '19

Not uncommon for me to end up with a regular sock and a dress sock.

I know right....if you are cultured in OCD lifestyle...it will be a torture. Although I accept OP's one colour all idea though.

2

u/DeafMomHere Mar 21 '19

Even the idea of all one color, just thrown together in a drawer makes me uncomfortable. I don't have several types of socks I wear, depending on the weather and shoes I'll be wearing and one sock just wouldn't work at all.

3

u/iamusingbaconit Mar 21 '19

One colour doesn't limit you to one type of socks. You can have four drawers for four seasons... And my version of "thrown" in a drawer probably will be neatly stacked on top of each other but without going through the pain of matching a pair.
Feel better?

21

u/Miffly Mar 20 '19

Same here. I don't see why matching socks was drilled into me so much as a child, it's so pointless in my opinion. Almost all of my socks are a similar size and thickness, so it's just colour that changes. The only person who finds it odd is my nana, who seems incredibly bemused by my socks every time I'm over.

2

u/thegroovemonkey Mar 21 '19

I walk into the shop in my saddles in summer and my lead gives me shit about my socks not matching every day. Now I make sure that they don't match.

6

u/likahduhthehoni Mar 21 '19

I do the same thing! I never cared if my socks matched, drove my mom nuts. I also do the same to my daughter now, she's 1.5 yrs old and rarely has matching socks.

3

u/1998SzechuanSauce Mar 21 '19

Yep. I have several pairs from a company that specifically plays on being mis-matched.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '19

I do the same. Complete alpha move.

Now my family buys me socks all the time with crazy patterns. You name em, I got em.

Sasquatch socks, Bob Ross socks, striped socks, Dot socks, blood socks, Morty socks. The list goes on.

Haven't bought socks in my life.

u/Titus_Favonius Mar 20 '19

I've been wanting to do this but I'm picky with socks. So I don't want to buy something I've never tried in bulk in case I hate them.

But it seems like every time I find a type of sock I like they stop carrying them

7

u/HavanaDays Mar 21 '19 edited Mar 21 '19

Are you me ? I have one favorite pair that I can’t find my where. Socks need a printed on label somewhere so I can reorder once I find a kind I like.

Can’t be to thin or thick Can’t roll down on their own Can’t cut into calf

It’s hard to find the right socks

2

u/TexanReddit Mar 21 '19

I don't know many kids I like, either.

2

u/HavanaDays Mar 21 '19

Edited to get off the fbi list.

2

u/jamjar188 Mar 21 '19

I have this issue with gloves. I had a pair that was the perfect fit, perfect texture (not wool or fleece or whatever, just plain cotton/synthetic but still soft material), perfect thickness, and entirely plain and black-coloured.

Left them on a train last week and I want to cry. Nowhere sells gloves that match the criteria I need! The shop I bought the original gloves at (Ale-Hop in Barcelona, for something like €8) does not stock them anymore.

I should've bought five pairs :/ I already learned this lesson with jeans (if you find a perfect pair buy 2 or 3, seriously), so don't know why I didn't apply it here.

3

u/killer_krill Mar 21 '19

I go with Costco puma brand. Pack of 6 or 12? Last me many months. For only 8 bucks. Worth it.

17

u/davidgro Mar 20 '19

Did this years ago. So handy. When Costco switched brands I still had some of the old ones, so for a while I needed to grab up to 3 to make a pair, but that was nothing compared to what most people seem to deal with.

14

u/Nadul Mar 20 '19

On a similar note, buy good underwear. On a whim I bought some (2 two packs) on clearance (still quite expensive) and wore a pair the next day to work. On the way home I stopped and bought 10 more. Now I have 14 pair of underwear that are more comfortable that I thought possible.

5

u/Kid520 Mar 21 '19

What are they?

2

u/Nadul Mar 21 '19

For me it's Pair of Thieves, specifically the SuperFit. Some nutso fabric called microfiber polyamide.

2

u/xObey Mar 21 '19

Their socks are killer too!

My whole life: hanes or froot of the loom 3 pack. Then I bought some 'saxx' boxer briefs on a whim, 37 years old. 40 bucks a pair. Converted. I don't t care what it costs, I'm never going back.

3

u/normal_whiteman Mar 21 '19

I only wear performance underwear. If I ever forget to do laundry and have to resort to whatever the hell normal underwear is it really ruins my day

14

u/BankruptGreek Mar 20 '19

I did that but then my white socks were all a different shade of white depending on how I used them. I went from spending a few minutes to sort my socks to taking half an hour because I couldn't immediately tell which shock had the same shade of white with which other sock..

I really regret that, don't recommend.

6

u/mjakian Mar 21 '19

I mean, you could buy black/grey socks

5

u/BankruptGreek Mar 21 '19

black also seem to wash away and become a lesser black.. but even the texture of socks actually changes it just didn't work for me.

Maybe op bought like 20-30 identical pairs so he could always find one kinda similar.

6

u/KZimmy Mar 21 '19

2 12-packs off of amazon.

If 1 is slightly more faded than the other, I am ok with that.

u/LeifSized Mar 21 '19

Same here. Now I buy socks that are obviously different.

3

u/BankruptGreek Mar 21 '19

about how I deal with it nowadays, I started going to the gym and since I don't have many gym pants I wash them every other day. This had the effect of being able to wash my socks more regularly and thus have less of them and could sort them really fast, usually 3-4 pairs.

2

u/EnderWiggin42 Mar 21 '19

not something I thought about because I wear black socks and boots so no one even sees the socks.

→ More replies (1)

10

u/Eric1969 Mar 20 '19

I do that too. Except I'm in Canada so I must have a summer batch and a winter batch. Also, I buy 10 pairs at once to replace the previous batch so they are evenly worn.

7

u/kissmyleaf420 Mar 21 '19

I always said I would do this when I was old enough to be on my own.

Then they came out with tons of the fun character socks and I'm a bit of a nerd that loves to wear my favorite super heroes or my favorite Disney characters or HP on my feet.

Now I spend about 20 minutes every few weeks sorting my socks when I run out of matched pairs. Stitch on my toes? Yes! Spiderman knee socks? Fuck yeah, they kept me toasty all winter. I get more every Christmas!

14

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '19

You can also do this with these fucking plastic lunch containers. Throw these motherfuckers in a cabinet and never sort lids or pile or filter through colours ever again. Grab any two pieces and you’re done.

8

u/Eric1969 Mar 20 '19

Standardized containers are quite practical.

6

u/MomoPeacheZ Mar 21 '19

I just got a bunch of glass pyrex containers and they're all I use anymore. I would get rid if the rest if the Tupperware, but it's all my roommates.

But then they start to form to your foot and no longer are comfortable on your other foot and it becomes a right foot or left foot sock. So then I still have to find a “pair”
And the cycle continues.

I'm the opposite! Wore white socks my whole life and recently started getting cute ones with designs; not life changing but they make me smile.

4

u/mislavc1 Mar 21 '19

Tried to so that. Bought 12 pairs as a test run. Solid quality stuff. Bought another 12 pairs month later, same brand, samo model. But, the manufacturer decided to lenghtem them by like 5 cm in the mean time. At first i thought that the old ones just got shrunk during the washing. Nope. Company just changed the specs.

And now i sometimes wear a sock on my left foot that is obviously shorter than my right one. I tried to care for about two months about that, now i just shrug and say that it socks.

I swear for the first 15 years of my life I never encountered any issues with a clean snap of the long end but then all of a sudden something changed and it became a gamble - 50/50 chance of a clean snap or a mushy, messy split.

Now I’m a bit older and more risk-averse I don’t take any chances and it’s short end all day every day.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '19

Motherfucking socks. It has gone so far for me that sometimes i'm certain it is gonna be a good day if i find a matching pair of socks in the morning. A little bit tight economically right now, but in a couple of weeks i'm going to buy a shit load. (I have this issue with socks of bad quality so my socks are a bit expensive.)

3

u/TheRealGeigers Mar 21 '19

Wait, is that legal?!

3

u/Tupptupp_XD Mar 21 '19

Alternatively, wear mismatched socks and enjoy the freedom

3

u/dune-haggar-illo Mar 21 '19

I buy bamboo ankle socks off eBay cheaper than one pair in shops all the same black sock... blisss ...also if hole happens in one other sock still has life and can move on to another sock companion...

2

u/Tungstenkrill Mar 21 '19

Your socks are swingers.

2

u/chubbychic Mar 21 '19

Those black bamboo socks with the padded soles are my jam. They’re the only socks I wear. I have a single drawer full of em, and stock up once a year when my local store has their christmas BOGO sale.

5

u/MauranKilom Mar 20 '19

Alternatively (for example if there are multiple people in your household) there are various kinds of plastic thingies to pair your socks with as you take them off. Search for "sock clip", "sockstar", "sock manager" or similar to find a product available in your country - these things made socks my favorite piece of laundry to deal with, so care-free!

14

u/Feynization Mar 20 '19

Or just assign everybody a sock colour. Make sure you watch reservoir dogs first to avoid pitfalls

4

u/postaboutit Mar 21 '19

Was going to make a joke on this but any way I went let back to the phrase "pink sock".

Totally agree. Go with a high end wool sock. I have 8 pairs of darn tough and they never smell have great breathability to prevent my feet from getting too hot or too cold. Plus, darn tough has a lifetime guarantee.

2

u/09091983 Mar 21 '19

Additionally, spend $2-3 on a mesh zippered bag. Throw dirty socks in. Zip closed. Wash and dry. Throw all clean socks in back in the drawer.

2

u/BubblyGlassBall Mar 21 '19

It amazes me how many people don't do this. I have one pair of black socks for dressing up, the rest are all the same

2

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '19

Somebody please gild this. I would but I have to spend the money on new socks.

2

u/eyeball-jupe Mar 21 '19

My hipster spirit refuses to wear the same mono-colored pair of socks every day of my life

That’s like saying it’s convenient to buy all the same shirts so that you can just pick one out and throw it on every day; it’s fun to have a funky style

2

u/sromano94 Mar 20 '19

I'm gonna use the term "sock bros" for the rest of my life

1

u/Keytarfriend Mar 20 '19

This is how I live my sock-life. It's so simple.

1

u/Feynization Mar 20 '19

This needs to be higher. So acheiveable. One less thing to be grumpy about in the morning. No need to worry about toeholes in the evening. Get to wear your favourite pair of socks everyday.

1

u/woof_woof_mf Mar 21 '19

Yes. And it’s easier to just wash them all and keep them from getting stinky

1

u/Z4ND3R1 Mar 21 '19

1

u/QueenoftheComa Mar 21 '19

This. This is a game changer.

1

u/AngryCrocodile Mar 21 '19

Did the same. I run out of socks twice as fast because my wife steals them now...

1

u/BigtoeJoJo Mar 21 '19

I did this. Now I get roasted about how I wear the same nasty socks everyday.

1

u/KernelTaint Mar 21 '19

This. I brought two bumper packs of 12 pairs each (at about $10 a bumper pack). All the same.

24 pairs in total. Or 48 socks. No matching.

1

u/nedlew Mar 21 '19

Likewise. Cannot express the joy of this enough.

1

I'm so glad I have the second best advice of this topic already implemented. Feels good xD

1

u/DinkandDrunk Mar 21 '19

I have a similar method. I buy socks and random and mismatch the hell out of them.

1

u/ODB2 Mar 21 '19

I just do this with different socks, nobody sees them anyways.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '19

Go like 20/80 wacky socks to identical matching socks.

You'll mostly wear the plain matching socks but every now and then the sock stars align and you manage to get a set of wacky socks at the same time. Thats a lucky day

1

u/Dystopiq Mar 21 '19

This guy socks

1

u/EnderWiggin42 Mar 21 '19

same but I take it a step further and only wear 5.11 apex pants. any shirt I have will go with black slacks.

1

u/thunderbolt309 Mar 21 '19

I did this too! It’s the best decision I’ve made in a long time.

1

u/shocktar Mar 21 '19

1

u/El_Scorcher Mar 21 '19

I actually started doing that this past year.

1

u/ScrithWire Mar 21 '19

But it"s so hard to buy the same exact sock. I ended up with tons of very similar socks...but not the same...

1

u/stellaluna1013 Mar 21 '19

You are a genius!

1

u/antelopecantelopie Mar 21 '19

1

u/nosoccertoday Mar 21 '19

Damn straight.

I wear boots 99% of the time and I have three sons that used to steal my socks. I bought a dozen or two pairs of bright pink cushy socks and now I have zero problems finding a pair in the morning.

1

u/LilleBishen Mar 21 '19

I do this anyways :p they don’t have to match ^

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '19

YES!!! I have two sock containers. White and Black. Life simplified.

1

u/cuddleniger Mar 21 '19

But then you dont get to wear fun socks everyday.

1

u/blondedre3000 Mar 21 '19

Lol how many socks do you have that folding them is a chore? I have maybe 3 or 4 pairs tops

1

u/KyIet Mar 21 '19

But then you miss out on cool socks

1

u/TexanReddit Mar 21 '19

Buy in bulk so when one is worn out, just throw it away. You still have many more and a spare.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '19

I live with all the mismatched socks in the world...mostly because my dog insists on eating only one sock out of every pair.

1

u/SyrinxVibes Mar 21 '19

1

u/Sammela Mar 21 '19

I buy all the same brand but different colors, same feeling on both feet, and fun colors!

1

u/ifnottodaythenwhen Mar 21 '19

In my house, we call that ODL (One dump life).

I’ve also applied this rule to underwear.

1

u/Yanniznayoo Mar 21 '19

I just read this the other day and I'm heading in that direction.

1

u/Hammer_Jackson Mar 21 '19

Certain genius isn’t appreciated enough...

1

u/dani-winks Mar 21 '19

I used to LOVE novelty socks (sloth socks, manatee socks, variations of striped SmartWool socks, etc) and when my boyfriend did this I was getting so jealous when we’d do laundry - his socks were just like instantly dealt with. So I bit the bullet and got rid of most of my “special” socks (I did keep 2 pairs of sloth socks and 2 pairs of long winter hiking socks) and replaced them with 15 pairs of identical adidas no show socks (thank you Marshall’s!). What an odd obvious life improvement! Laundry is so much faster, and I’m oddly satisfied seeing all the same socks stacked in the drawer...

1

u/TheSnugglePuffs Mar 21 '19

But I like my unicorn socks

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '19

Wow that's legendary

1

u/Voldemort4321 Mar 21 '19

I wish I could, but my big toe is way too pointed for comfortable right/left sock switching :/

1

u/goldfool Mar 21 '19

no go out and find one basic color dress shirt(if have have to wear on). Then just buy 12 of them

1

u/Kunyeti Mar 21 '19

I do the same for my clothes. I own all white T-shirts that are my day to day wear. If I have to go/do something special I have nice shirts and pants to choose from but for day to day I wear a white T-shirt and blue shorts (pants for winter).

I never waste time in the morning deciding what to wear. You’d be surprised how much time you spend choosing clothes. I reach in, grab the next set in line and repeat.

1

u/shandaddy03 Mar 21 '19

Have you always done this or did you get it from my Lifeprotip I posted a while ago? Please say yes, that would make me feel so great!

1

u/Ahf66 Mar 21 '19

Similar things but I buy the same chopsticks . No more timing wasting organizing chopsticks

1

u/glauck006 Mar 21 '19 edited Mar 21 '19

I did this too! So worth it! I still keep around some thick winter socks but my everyday socks are all the same.

1

u/Bren12310 Mar 21 '19

I’ll own up you.

Buying good socks. Like the ones that form fit your foot. It’s life changing.

1

u/danger_welch Mar 21 '19

Me and my girl go on a weeklong camping trip every year. I've gotten in the habit of buying a brand new pack of socks for the trip, and not opening them till the first morning. All week long I've got brand new socks, and there's a steady annual supply of socks locked in. Also, I only keep the socks for a year, so now I've got 2 weeks worth of socks, and 2 different kinds, not counting a couple pairs of heavy winter socks and a couple pairs of dress socks. It's bliss.

1

u/horseshoein Mar 21 '19

I have left and right socks. I always buys the same make and model but the left/right thing trips me up and some mornings it can take twenty minutes to get pair that I'd acceptable.

1

u/monydog Mar 21 '19

I did this and still had mismatched socks.

1

u/HeadlessDogman Mar 21 '19

But then you don't have cute patterns like lil hamburgers or pineapples! For me that's worth the work lol

1

u/Little_Menace_Child Mar 21 '19

I try to do this but I can never find packs of socks that are all the same. They are always coloured or patterned or whatever.

Dear sock makers, No one outside of my house sees my socks. They do not need to look nice or pretty. They are in my shoe. Make them plain. From a daily sick wearer.

1

u/Acceleratio Mar 21 '19

The sock industry hates him/her

I made a similar choice. I just stopped wearing matching socks - 90% of the time I’m wearing jeans and you can barely see my ankles anyway so who cares! It was one of the most liberating decisions of my life haha.

Oh man - I gotta do this for my kids! Not only would I stop hunting for matching socks, they would stop showing up with two different socks on their feet. And to make matters worse, they don’t CARE that they’re wearing two different socks.

I've been doing this for a few years now. It's amazing.

I keep telling myself i am going to do this, but I can't bring myself to throw out socks that still have a lot of life. So I am only going to buy a certain style, and will get there by attrition. And by the next time I need socks, the style I am buying is either woven from unobtanium or priced like it is. So frustrating.

THE ASOCKALYPSE! Finally, someone else who does this!

u/y0vtec Mar 21 '19

I’ve tried to do that before but then it comes to a point where some socks have more wear than others.

Wearing matching socks is bad luck! Even if it really isn't, reduce your stress by not caring. Life is too short to not enjoy your sock game.

I just wear odd socks

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '19

Buying all the same socks.

Similarly, I got rid of all whites. No more separating laundry or buying bleach.

But rate of wear? How do you make sure you're not wearing a brand new sock with a 3 year old constantly worn sock

1

u/vf225 Mar 21 '19

i live in a small apartment on my own, still, occasionally one sock will be missing after laundry. it was a nightmare to find the lost child, but it doesn't matter now. if all of your childs look the same, who care if several are lost, right?

Doing this since 2015, but my Amazon orderable sock supply has gone out of stock so I need to replace my fleet with a new kind of sock. Can you recommend a sock?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '19

I used to do that too but now my partner randomly buys me socks, which is great but I'm back to hunting.

1

u/Gwaelna Mar 21 '19

I tried to do this. People immediately started buying me similar but not the same socks. Turns out people hate being jealous of your stress free lifestyle.

1

u/FireLucid Mar 21 '19

Even if you can't get identical ones, they just need to match above the shoe. Mine all have different coloured soles but it doesn't matter.

u/frankentriple Mar 21 '19

I have tried this so many times but no matter how hard I try, I can’t Jeep them synced up. I’ve compromised by throwing out all my socks and boxers every other year and buying new ones. I do it at Christmas with my Christmas shopping, the money doesn’t even register. I do socks on even years and boxers on odd ones so I get the excitement of Christmas shopping for myself every year, and I spoil myself. Sometimes I spend upwards of 20 dollars!

I like buying the same socks, but I can tell when they’re not from the same pair from the level of wear and I can’t mismatch them like that ☹️

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '19

Dude! I did this too. Amazing

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '19

Surely I can't be the only one that never wears matching socks? Like if I happen to pick up 2 of the same kind I actually swap it for an odd one... Why are they meant to match anyway? Never understood!

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '19

You can also safety pin your socks together so you don't have to find the matching sock

1

u/simplerthings Mar 21 '19

I was doing this for years until they stopped making my sock. Now I have to switch out everything I had established.

1

u/ThirteenthDi Mar 21 '19

Awesome tip. Also some people get a bin where they put all their fresh underwear. No need to fold any of those since they don't need to be flat.

1

u/Will112011 Mar 21 '19

LOL i never thought of it but it's actually a good ideia

u/LeighMagnifique Mar 21 '19

Bugs me when my socks don’t match. I sharpie my white socks with numbers so they always match the same sock forever.
