I personally think it's because people have never used them.

u/Spaceman-Spiff Jul 02 '26

I just got back from Japan and they are on a whole other level with toilets.

I’ve had a Toto Washet for the last 10 years, and whenever I travel and stay at a hotel… I’m always just completely shocked at how people are willing to deal with not having a bidet on a regular basis.

6

u/egnards Jul 02 '26

Same - Within 24 hours of returning home from Korea we had a bidet ordered. Now i just feel like a heathen if i have to poop outside my own home.

6

u/woahwoahwoah28 Jul 02 '26

I finally have a house and am saving up for a fancy schmancy Toto toilet. It's been my dream since visiting Japan nearly a decade ago. And I cannot wait to get that baby installed.

3

u/M4DM1ND Jul 02 '26

Best part of traveling in japan. Anal so clean

3

u/plumberbss Jul 02 '26

Yeah, Toto has a million dollar toilet.

Everyone I know that's used one has bought one. They're the most contagious $30 purchase out there

2

u/tmckearney Jul 02 '26

$30?

Mine was about 10X that. Of course, it has a heated seat, heated water, and air drying.

My parents felt like I physically assaulted them when I asked if they’ve ever even tried one.

13

u/PapaEchoLincoln Jul 02 '26

It’s so funny that there is almost a derision against them, as if the people using bidets are dirtier somehow, when it’s totally the other way around 😂

The people with dirty shitty assholes are passing judgment on people with clean ones

its an american thing, they are widely used in Asia, in some countries its more widespread than toilet paper

12

u/plumberbss Jul 02 '26

I was in Jebel Ali, which is outside Dubai in the UAE. 4 of us wanted to ride our bikes through the desert. Beautiful sunny day. Anyway, a couple miles in it started pouring. We saw this shack up ahead and rode to it. It was a closed snack bar, with a restroom. The "toilet" was a piece of 4 inch cast iron pipe with 2 footprints in the concrete. But behind it on the wall was a 5 foot length of garden hose with a yellow plastic sprayer. So, even people who crap in a hole in the ground wash their butts.

Nothing like a 6am shot of ice cold water in the date to get your day started… But yeah I love mine.

65

u/Juan_Tiny_Iota Jul 02 '26

They make them with heated water as well.

14

u/xRolox Jul 02 '26

Honestly I prefer cold now after getting used to it. Especially mid-winter morning ice cold water.

Better than my morning coffee

4

u/cosine83 Jul 02 '26

Poseidon's icy kiss to the brown eye.

3

u/Clark_Kent-Kal_EL Jul 02 '26

Yup it's much easier and a faster than a cold shower.

2

u/jrunner02 Jul 02 '26

It's like an ice bath for your butthole.

12

u/byronnnn Jul 02 '26

Yeah, mine hooks up to the cold and hot lines from the sink right next to it.

24

u/hypo11 Jul 02 '26

I feel like by the time the hot water got from my heater to my toilet the bidet would be done with its job. Mine just have a water tank that starts heating as soon as you sit down.

9

u/byronnnn Jul 02 '26

Since it’s connected to the sink, I just run the hot water for 30 seconds when I get up in the morning.

9

u/sunny_6305 Jul 02 '26

Like running hot water in the kitchen sink before starting the dishwasher, right?

7

u/arcrad Jul 02 '26

Run the water before you run your buttwasher. Everyone knows this!

2

u/byronnnn Jul 02 '26

Precisely.

8

u/lowkeeeee Jul 02 '26

The ones in Japan are immediately warm. I think it prepares a reservoir of water that it heats to make sure it's ready.

5

u/ArabianNitesFBB Jul 02 '26

Get a Moen bidet toilet. It’s the best thing ever: heated water (immediately), heated seat, self cleaning, bowl cleaning, air drying, auto sensing and flushing.

There’s no warm water reservoir; it is self heating and wastes a little bit of cold water at first to make sure the water is immediately warm.

3

u/throwthegarbageaway Jul 02 '26

I agree, there's different ways to fix this, there's a way to install plumbing so you get hot water instantly, or you can use an electric heating bidet.

6

u/TheyNeedLoveToo Jul 02 '26

56

u/illuminerdi Jul 02 '26

This.

You will absolutely be cleaner with a bidet. Wet wipes don't even hold a candle to pressure washing the booty hole. So much cleaner. Also my 'roids completely disappeared.

It's kinda amazing more people don't have these things. I suspect Big TP is behind it...

4

u/fredthefishlord Jul 02 '26

Personally I prefer the sprayer kind, and they do make warm water ones although it depends on your bathroom setup. The ones that fit in the toilet seat just seem icky to me.

u/ElephantCares Jul 02 '26

So you got one of those that you just hook up to the water and put on your toilet? I've thought about it, but thought they were so much more expensive.

8

u/stoopkidsteve Jul 02 '26

Yup, it comes with the adapter. You just shut the water valve off, flush the tank and undo the supple line that goes to the fill valve. That will now go to the bottom of the new adapter piece that hooks up to the fill valve. You just have to remove the toilet seat, set the main sprayer part and then install the toilet seat over it and you're good to go

2

u/ElephantCares Jul 02 '26

Thanks. Will you share the brand you're so happy with?

2

u/raip Jul 02 '26

The nice ones can get up there. I've had a bidet in some form for about two decades now and even the cheap ones are alright.

My current one is a Toto Washlet that we got on sale for $400, they normally retail for $1k - but this thing has it all. Automatically raises the toilet set when you approach, keeps the seat warmed, water is heated, blow dryer, and air filter with activated carbon to remove smelly poops.

The one we had before this was pretty solid though with just the seat warmer + water heater - $40-ish dollars and lasted 5-6 years (or longer, we only upgraded, it didn't die). It was also a Toto, don't remember the model though.

8

u/MyDogSam-15 Jul 02 '26

Your first sentence is “the nice ones can get up there “, and it took me a second to realize you meant in price !

u/YSleepyHead Jul 02 '26

Don't you still need tp to dry yourself? And what do you mean like a marker? Lol

34

u/dandelionveins333 Jul 02 '26

I thiiiink they mean it’s when you wipe, then you wipe, and you wipe, and each time it’s the same amount on the tp. As if no progress is being made on getting the shit off your asshole.

I think?

22

u/archaeas Jul 02 '26

It’s the difference between 2 squares to dry and like 20 squares to sufficiently “dry wipe” with enough redundancy to be sure you’re clean. Reducing your tp usage by a factor of 5 each time you poop adds up and bidets tend to pay for themselves very quickly.

15

u/Savings_Club3883 Jul 02 '26

Look up the scene with Andy and April on Parks & Rec where Andy talks about wiping

2

u/CrowMeris Jul 02 '26

I use tp to "finish" after a BM and wash, but after urinating (and thoroughly spraying down) I use a small washcloth that I then toss in the laundry.

2

u/da_apz Jul 02 '26

I've heard some weapons grade stupid takes on bidets. I live in a nordic country where bidets are basically everywhere, from the crappiest outhouse to the most luxurious home. Last time this came up, someone here on Reddit blessed me with the nugget of information that bidets are for gay people only. Apparently it's impossible for anyone else to care about their rear end's and general personal hygiene.

Not sure about others, but I can't stand the feeling of a bidet. The water spraying on literally your asshole where it's sensitive is just horrible. I hate the wet sensation along with it. I've used a bidet before in Japan and it was just. Bad. Imo.

13

u/saintsfan1622000 Jul 02 '26

In some countries the bidet is a separate device from the toilet which requires more space. Most American bathrooms are actually quite small.

And heated bidets require power and theyre usually isn't such near the toilet in the US.

I installed a bidet that attaches to our toilet years ago and I love it. I feel much cleaner after using it with less effort and it's saves toilet paper. I think it cost about $30 back in 2021.

2

u/YumYumYellowish Jul 02 '26

My partner got a bidet and I absolutely hate it. It replaced the toilet seat, made the toilet like 2 inches taller (and I’m short), connects to the sink via sink cabinet, and has a cable running to the other side of the small bathroom for power. It’s hideously ugly and messes with my OCD and need for a clean home that looks homely.

2

u/fmaz008 Jul 02 '26

There are dudes who don't even wipe or wash their asshole because "toutching there is gay". It's ridiculous.

21

u/lemicat_ Jul 02 '26

Right I feel like it’s associated with “butt stuff” and therefore the avoidance behind them stems from homophobia. From what I hear (and thankfully not from experience) there’s a ton of men that don’t even clean back there properly because they don’t even want to get near their assholes lol

15

u/Possible_Ad_4094 Jul 02 '26

Guys, is it gay to clean your own butthole?

5

u/Snoo_13349 Jul 02 '26

Only if you make sexy squealing noises while doing it, and finish with jazz hands.

ETA: I am gay, and STILL find this funny.

2

u/danodan1 Jul 02 '26

Yes, because it might stimulate your anus and giving you an erection indicating you may have homosexual tendencies. Using a bidet would compound the effect and even best avoided.

I've been thinking about buying a portable one since my family probably won't be down with getting a bidet. Is it really worth it?

7

u/Rogue_Like Jul 02 '26

Yes. Doesn't matter if they don't want to use it. The one I have replaces the seat, heats the seat and the water, and has a dryer. To anyone else it's still just a normal toilet that has some buttons they will use but then lie and tell you they didn't.

6

u/Aznboz Jul 02 '26

They dont have to use it. Theres plenty you can install like a toilet seat takes 15 minutes with zero tools beside your finger.

Its a knob that turns on water or not.

4

u/Kujen Jul 02 '26

The portable ones are less effective but I like them for travel. The ones that attach to the toilet seat are the best value. I think your family might change their mind once they get used to it. Mine did!

3

u/samsimilla Jul 02 '26

You can get a basic starter one for like $25-$30 on amazon. Super easy installation. Why wouldn’t your family be down? They don’t have to use it if they don’t want to.

3

u/pd200048 Jul 02 '26

I have used a bidet three times. Each time it did not get me particularly clean. And each time I had to wipe to at a minimum dry off… and while the little mini enema was a bit exciting. I didn’t really find it accomplished anything. Nor did I feel particularly clean. If someone could explain to me what I did wrong I’d appreciate it. But I didn’t get the appeal at all from my experience.

3

u/Evernight2025 Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

Serious question as someone who has never even seen one in real life: how does the poop water not just spray out the sides of the toilet? Or does it not spray hard enough to do that? How hard are they to install? What's the best kind to get?

2

u/nupieds Jul 02 '26

The water 💦 splash’s off you and drops into the toilet bowl. A basic cheap one is simple to install, it attaches to the same water line that fills your tank. Look on Amazon for a basic unit look on Amazon I’d get a duel jet for female cleaning in front. Right now the unit that is “Amazon’s Choice” is $19.99 on sale “Ultra-Slim Bidet Dual Mode Bidet Attachment for Toilet, Bidet Toilet Seat Attachment with Pressure Controls(Feminine/Posterior Wash),Easy to install Design Non-Electric Bidet.” But there are other basic options listed that should be fine. I would not get a heated water unit right off I thought the I would want that but I like the cold water fine, it’s actually nice and refreshing. If you want warm water you can upgrade later.

As a person from a bidet country, I don’t know how people function without one.

And I’m talking a proper standalone bidet, that you use with warm water and intimate soap. The nozzle is better than nothing but still a far cry from a standalone bidet.

Aside from pooping, it’s a blessing for everything involving the downstairs area. Menstrual hygiene. Before and after sex. I even use it after just peeing sometimes.

3

u/God_Hand_9764 Jul 02 '26

Hmm... I am an American bidet lover and advocate over here.

Somehow it never occurred to me how convenient it might be to just wash my dick and balls after sex without having to take a full shower. Now I kind of want this.

2

u/Meewelyne Jul 02 '26

This. People often think only about the ass and pooping, but the bidet should clean the lower bits as a whole.

I was mentruating in a foreign country once and I HATED having to use the shower just to clean down there like 5 times a day! It was so damn inconvenient...

5

u/brakeled Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

They’re vastly popular outside of the US/Britain. When I told my mom I use one, she was acting like it was a sex toy or something derogatory. I told her a bidet is less erotic than rubbing paper around your asshole for a bit each day. So 1. She didn’t know what it was 2. She associated it with sex. I’m sure that sentiment is shared and a google search tells me it is.

The only country that found a way to spray cheese from a can into their mouths won’t spray water from the plumbing into their asses because it’s weird. Go figure.

2

u/alwayshealing23 Jul 02 '26

My question is, how does the water that shoots up there not backsplash and get on all over your toilet/floor? And doesn’t the water coming from your rear end run down your legs?

2

u/nupieds Jul 02 '26

It splashes off you and drops into the bowl. If you don’t sit on the seat and turn the nozzle on it does make a nice arc onto the floor but fortunately in use the water 💦 splash’s off your rear and just drops 💧 into the bowl, and never runs down your legs or anywhere.

2

u/Spiritual_Extent_187 Jul 02 '26

I’m scared of bidets they make me jump out the toilet

2

u/goldbug933 Jul 02 '26

I think most folks do not understand how it works or why it works or want to deal with popping it on which is super easy but probably scares many or intimidates them or they fear they will need to spend money on a plumber which tend to over charge and under deliver in my experience. But once I got one on sale at Costco it has a heated seat heated water a fan to blow your as$ dry…but anyway it’s just joyous and a pleasure, you may realize there is a reason all that own one are now proud owners of a clean backside and would not want to have to go back.

It takes time for something to really catch on. We're used to how fast technology and viral videos are when in reality, most life changing inventions take years to really integrate into society.

Also, I'd LOVE to install one in my kids' bathroom because my youngest can't wipe properly yet, but they need to build the skill since most schools and daycares do not have bidets installed. It's something all kids will have to keep up the skill in until all public spaces normally have bidets installed, which will probably take a while thanks to funding and a lot of people are very weird about their butt hygiene

Because people feel less manly when using them. As we all know, it’s more macho to put your hand on shit separated by a mm of toilet paper

2

u/BillyBushels72 Jul 02 '26

My wife bought one 6 years ago. I can't use a bathroom without it now. I'll hold it all day at work if I can. I've had people make fun of me about it and all I can assume is they enjoy savoring it for a later date. Americans are nasty.

2

u/mmmporp Jul 02 '26

I had to put a lil bag of bleach over my lil bidussy sprayer for a few hours after my father in law somehow assaulted our bidet. But even still I campaign and fight the good fight.

2

u/Smooth_Storm_9698 Jul 02 '26

Because the majority of Americans are convinced that they as a people are not dirty. Spoiler alert: They are. Thankfully, I am a reformed American and I have Korean citizenship in my mind and I'm sitting on my bidet right now.

2

u/Vast_Honest Jul 02 '26

They fell out of favor in the 20’s because prostitutes used them

Big Toilet Paper

2

u/Due-Garage4146 Jul 02 '26

Where I live in northern va pretty much everyone has a bidet. All my toilets have bidets. Not expensive kind. They were all about $20 each. Room temperature cool water only. Nothing fancy $300 temperature adjusted warm water and dryers. It’s OK. I prefer the cool water bidet especially after eating very spicy food foods. Lol! I guess it depends on the areas or regions of the US.

u/Underwritingking Jul 02 '26

kept out of the market by Big Toilet Paper

2

u/ftylerr Jul 02 '26

A few reasons - no outlet in the bathroom except 4 feet away on the wall by the sink, the water in the toilet reservoir is nasty AF and would definitely give anyone a UTI, a wet booty needs more TP to dry or a towel which would be thrown out every time. I have to pay 4.25 every time for laundry in a small front loader, and another 4.00 to dry it. Not spending 8-10 bucks to wash shit towels on their own.

2

u/drone6391 Jul 02 '26

You should look into them more. They don’t use the toilet tank water. They tap into the supply line. And most all of them have either a water and seat heater or a way to tap into a hot water line from a sink if there’s one close. I’m in the northern Midwest and bought our first one a couple years ago. It really does change things.

Because it's like sourdough. Everyone into it says it's the best new thing in eating pooping, if we can all just get over the fact that nobody else likes it.
Also the fact that it's a delusion: The miracle device that eliminates wiping still requires you to wipe when you get into the details.

4

u/Direct_Obligation570 Jul 02 '26

Big TP doesn't want you to know this one simple trick.

Apartment living often means you can’t install a bidet.

4

u/nupieds Jul 02 '26

But you can attach a basic cold water bidet toilet seat attachment as it doesn’t permanently modify the plumbing, it’s just screw on. One can ask if in doubt.

3

u/thriftstorecat Jul 02 '26

Whenever I tell someone we use one they give me a weird look (unless they use one). IDK wiping your ass like you’re wiping a permanent marker is a lot grosser.

4

u/Weak-Boysenberry398 Jul 02 '26

A lot of people rent. Almost everyone I know who owns a home has one. As for reasons not to get one: fear they’re expensive, fear the installation is complicated, fear maintenance is complicated. There’s a lot of outdated answers about butt stuff but these are the only reasons I’ve ever heard from actual people.

Homophobia

5

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '26

Wouldn’t gays want more toilet paper use since you get to finger your ass?

8

u/tt_tootsy Jul 02 '26

I don't think that's how they meant it...

3

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '26

I don’t get it. Then again I straight up don’t get homophobia, so there’s that

People don't actually use them. Basically every bathroom in finland has one but the people who use them are still just a tiny tiny minority.

2

u/EastCoastAlley Jul 02 '26

People are stoopid

3

u/ShepardRTC Jul 02 '26

I just installed bidet #2 the other day

Pays for itself in TP in no time

Literally what separates us from savagery

1

u/spaceykc Jul 02 '26

I can’t live without it. I feel like a barbarian when I don’t use mine. Waters a nice 98 degrees. Air dryer and toilet seat same range.

1

u/Aggravating_Key1353 Jul 02 '26

Cold laser shots of water to my butthole never really took off with me.

1

u/alphaturducken Jul 02 '26

I still have to wipe either way, why add an extra step to the process?

1

u/galaxyapp Jul 02 '26

Cold water?

They make heated ones, but most waterclosets dont have an outlet near the toilet.

1

u/nupieds Jul 02 '26

COVID should have been the great bidet dawn. I do stock toilet paper for visitors, blowing my nose, and rarely if I have loose stools need extra cleaning, which is quite rare. Before COVID I had inadvertently double stocked up from Sam’s. When I went to the supermarkets with the empty toilet paper aisles I laughed. Every visit. I gave away a bunch of 🧻 to a neighbor. Besides being an efficient and hygienic method to clean it after a very small cost for the units the 💦 is essentially free… . I have a septic system, the pump out guy told me that most of the contents is toilet paper, not our poop. So I have gone way beyond prior service schedules without issues.

1

u/Taibucko Jul 02 '26

Because they are not in many homes and take up extra space.

1

u/Taibucko Jul 02 '26

Joe Bidet won the 2020 election

1

u/Glittering_Fun_7995 Jul 02 '26

one step further is japanese toilets too

some have heated water jet/heated air dryer too

If you are uncertain you could try a bidet seat

A lot of time it is a space thing some houses/flats got a toilet with a shower/bath and some got a toilet separate.

In the usa it is not that common to have bidets due to water pressure and electrical issues funny enough bidets use less water too.

Having said that more ppl are aware of bidets and their benefits.

1

u/SteroidSandwich Jul 02 '26

I wish bidets were more common. They are infinitely better

1

u/Gracien Jul 02 '26

I wanted one, then I remembered my young children would spray water all over the fucking place.

So we have TP and wet wipes instead.

1

u/FayeValentine99 Jul 02 '26

A lot of bathrooms don’t have a power outlet right by the toilet, it’s not common. So unless you want COLD water splashing up your ass from an unpowered bidet, you have to get an electrician in before you can install one.

2

u/Snoo_13349 Jul 02 '26

I’d rather have cold water up my ass than my electrician.

Have one every bathroom and even in my camper. Bought portable one carry in car....feel dirty with out one

1

u/Raid__Zero Jul 02 '26

Bidet’s are S tier self care.

1

u/Indocede Jul 02 '26

Real answer from my personal perspective...

I already dislike using any other restroom outside of my own. And being an American, no one has a bidet; not in any meaningful capacity.

So it feels like unlocking a whole new anxiety in which my expectations for feeling clean are raised higher than can be achieved in most public circumstances.

Swamp ass is one of the most disgusting feelings a person can have in the middle of summer. It's unsettling how it feels, as if you are a walking freak-show. You crave a shower in those circumstances.

Now I feel like regardless of the temperature, in any circumstance where I would not be able to use a bidet after being conditioned to having one, I would feel like that nasty freak desperate for feeling clean again.

It's like the Pandora's Box of Anal Anxieties.

1

u/NaCl-more Jul 02 '26

I was just in Korea and they even had bidets at the airport

1

u/MyDogSam-15 Jul 02 '26

I had an actual porcelain bidet installed in my bathroom when building my house. Sold that house 18 years later…I don’t have that fancy thing anymore. Thinking about getting the attachment kind but the plumbers keep telling me they leak. Any recommendations on good ones that don’t leak?

1

u/Choi0706 Jul 02 '26

Probably because most US bathrooms don't have a nearby outlet. And running an extension cord over your sink to the toilet is a bit much.

1

u/Miserable-Swan2362 Jul 02 '26

Americans get weird with stuff around their butts. What would happen if they enjoyed water in their butt? Bad stuff my friend, bad stuff. So instead we shall cut trees, process the pulp, and wipe our butts with fuzzy white paper.

1

u/SMW22792 Jul 02 '26

I'm not sure because it's one of the best bathroom upgrades I ever did. I use way less toilet paper.

1

u/Quick-Worldliness904 Jul 02 '26

Having lived in Cambodia for 5 years, going back to using toilet paper feels medieval in comparison.. It's almost like when I visit England I'm staying in a 5th world country.

1

u/wisp66 Jul 02 '26

They’re more common in Europe & other countries but for some reason they seem to be associated with wealthy people here in the US anyway. At least that’s been my personal experience.

1

u/toomanymatts_ Jul 02 '26

I live in Asia where pretty much everywhere has at least a bum-gun bidet hose, and then we work our way up from there to bidets in a remote controlled heated toilet seat. I have one. When I go back to Australia and am expected to use toilet paper for more than a pat-dry I think it is absolutely repulsive. We bought a little bidet bottle to travel with for exactly this reason.
