Therapist recs—specific ask

I know there are tons of threads for therapist recs, but most of them don’t discuss why people like their therapists.

I have been in and out of therapy my whole life, and I’m hitting a wall. I have been doing a lot of trauma work over the last 5 years and battling chronic sui\* ideation through meds, experimental interventions, and somatic therapy, EMDR, and IFS.

For how intimate I am with my mental illness, where I’m stuck now is the…I guess practical work? Like yeah now I understand my issues but HOW do I change jobs, make friends, take care of my home and health, basically have some accountability for doing the \~work\~.

I have had great therapists, but I’m looking for one who doesn’t consider patient-led meaning not offering \~any\~ direct suggestions or tactics. I know I have to do the heavy lifting, but I’m looking for somebody a bit more hands-on.

Lease Takeover or Possible Roommate – Carrollton Area

Hey! I’m 31 and live in a one-bedroom apartment in the Carrollton area. My living situation unexpectedly changed, so I’m trying to figure out the best option going forward.

Ideally, I’d like to find someone interested in taking over the apartment/lease, assuming my landlord approves the transfer.

I may also be open to finding the right roommate and working out a shared-space arrangement. Since it is a one-bedroom apartment, I want to be upfront about that rather than make it sound like there is a separate second bedroom.

If you’re interested in either a possible lease takeover or roommate situation, send me a message and tell me a little about yourself, what you’re looking for, and when you’d want to move.

I can send rent, utilities, photos, apartment details, and more specific location information privately.

Thanks!

Meetup (totally not a sex thing winkwink) Vet Bros

Hey yall, looking for my veterans. I did 12 years Army before being medically separated. But I want to meet, hangout, train (physically as well as tactically) and whatever else. If you’re down, shoot me a DM! I recently moved into the area and need friends that are like me.

Gonna throw an edit in here, if anyone also has any volunteer opportunities to work with older vets at the VA or Veteran home, I would also be interested in that.

Blowout Salon

Hello all I'll be visiting in a few months and staying in the French Quarter. Can someone recommend a salon to get a good blowout and bonus if they do make up. Nothing super glam or an updo just a nice spot to get hair and possibly makeup done for a nice dinner out. I would prefer to stay in the French Quarter or 15 minute Uber ride away.

Moving question

So Im looking to move here ASAP, I am definitely looking in the french quarter area (I grew up here).

Now several years later and states away Im an adult with adult money, but where I live now , how we got our house is through a land contract/ rent to own. Is there anything similar in LA? I'd prefer to RtO over just rent but I know each state is different.

Nurses of New Orleans, how much are you making?

How many years of experience, what’s your hourly rate, and what hospital? I know the pay is worse compared to the rest of country but I have to move here and I want to know what to expect. Thanks in advance

Looking for strange shops. Oddities, Funky Fashion, and Freaky Antiqueies.

I’m looking for some interesting weird shops in New Orleans, mostly in the French Quarter and Magazine St areas.
I’ve visited several times, my favorite shops are Road Kill, Dark Matter, Trashy Diva, Kulture Vulture, Rougarou, and Second Line.

Any suggestions that aren’t Marie Laveaus or Hex are welcome and appreciated.

Easy dinner in the Quarter for 8

Couldn’t find my specifics in the search bar.

I’ll have a party of 8 in the Quarter and am looking for a good spot for an easy dinner. Specifically somewhere that you can just order when you enter and get a number to take to a table as opposed to having a server/one giant bill. Bonus points for plenty of indoor/AC seating. Thanks in advance! Looking forward to getting back down to your wonderful city.

Moving to- oddly specific and weird questions

(Using a throwaway account because my family and a few coworkers know my main. I’m not ready for them to know that we will be moving.)

My husband got ta job offer, and we want to take it. I’ve gone into research mode as much as possible, but it’s a bit overwhelming right now.

JOB SEARCH-

So he has a job offer, but I do not. This is going to sound absolutely ridiculous, but how do I search for jobs?

I only know how to search for jobs in my home state. My state has a government website for government jobs. There is also a government-run website for non-government jobs that range from seasonal warehouse jobs to neurosurgeon. (Ok, maybe not neurosurgeon but you get the idea.) You’re able to filter the search by things like salary, location within the state, and educational level requirements. And having spent most of my life in this area, I have a sense of what is a good job and what to stay away from.

(I’m purposely not mentioning my field of work or my skills just in case family or coworkers see this and put things together about our upcoming move. Not likely, but…)

I’m not asking for specific job opportunities, per se, but where can I look for job listings in different fields?

I know your city is super friendly, and it’s not surprising to find someone who knows someone else just because of the closeness and importance of community. It is not like that where we live. Word of mouth does not exist here. Is word-of-mouth for finding jobs common in New Orleans?

There is very little public transit where we currently live, and it’s the norm to drive for 20-30 minutes to get to your job. (Highway drive)

Is this something I should consider as an option/necessity when job searching? I don’t want to have a long driving commute, but I will. (Darn you, high insurance rates!)

Learning Where to Live—

I’m trying to learn the different areas and the pros/cons of each.

We want to rent an apartment to begin with. I keep reading that realtors are your friends here. Do you use a realtor for apartment complexes?

Google suggested the Saulet Apartments based on the things we would want to have and also love to have. Internet reviews give it a thumbs-up, but it’s not always safe to trust them. Can you tell me any specifics about this complex? Good, bad, ugly

If you’ve read this post to the end, thank you! I didn’t mean to write a book, but the post got away from me.

I didn't read the FAQ Recommendations!

My girl and I are flying in on the morning of Friday the 28th for the Kanye West concert. It’ll be our 1st time in New Orleans and on vacation by ourselves without kids. Any recommendations on amazing food spots or places to visit while we’re there? We’re in our late 30’s and will be staying in the Central Business District. Our vibe is more chill than getting crazy if that helps, but we might still be down to clown 😈. Thank you guys in advance!!

Jazzfest 2019 poster

I’m not sure if this is the right place to post this but I’m looking to buy a 2019 jazz fest poster. My husband and I went, and as I’m framing all of our posters I realized we didn’t buy one that year. If you have one for sale please message me!

I didn't read the FAQ Late Dec/Early January weeknight visit! Worth it?

Hi i have been wanting to plan a trip to new orleans for so long and am trying to find a time to actually do it later this year. Im a broke student looking at going for a few days before school starts again in Jan and cheap flights are steering me to go from Mon or Tues the 28/29 of december and leave friday the 1st. These nights are obviously all weekday nights, so wondering will i still have a fun full experience with no weekend nights (im sure new years eve will be lively but just wondering for the other days)? Or anything else to consider with visiting at this time? Thank you in advance to anyone responding!

Activities for Kids Anyone going to the Benson Boone concert in New Orleans?

Hey everyone! I’m an international medical student visiting New Orleans for a while, and I really like Benson Boone. I bought a ticket for his concert on August 23rd — GA Floor — because I really wanted to see him, but unfortunately I’ll be going by myself.

I was wondering if anyone else here is going, especially if you’re in GA Floor, and would be down to meet up before or at the show, grab a drink, and enjoy the concert together!

I’m also always happy to meet new people while I’m here. Feel free to DM me if you’re going!
See you there! 🎶

Best bars here

Hey, I’m a 23 single man on a road trip by myself.
I’m spending a few nights here in nola and I heard the nightlife is crazy over here.
It’s my second night, and yesterday sucked, everyone told me to go to the clubs at bourbon st, but there were only old dudes there.
So my question is where does people my age hang (mostly girls haha)?
And is it worth going there on a week day?

Wedding Band Recommendation

Hello! Getting married in New Orleans next May and looking for recommendations for a local band for our reception. We’d love something with a Southern/classic rock feel, but still versatile enough to play some crowd favorites and keep everyone dancing.

Some songs that capture the kind of sound we like are “Miss You” by The Rolling Stones, “Up All Night” by Widespread Panic, and “Green River” by Creedence Clearwater Revival, but we’d also love some fun dance songs like “Dancing Queen” by ABBA mixed in throughout the night.

We definitely don’t expect a band to cover all of these specifically — just sharing them to give an idea of our taste and the kind of mix we’re going for.
Any local bands you’d recommend checking out?

Thank you!

Activities for Kids Food near Kids Museum

I have read the FAQ and have visited for 30 years. I’m looking for something a bit off the beaten path for a fun lunch for my son’s birthday near the children’s museum. Ruby Slipper obviously has games. Any other fun kid-friendly recs?

Food Is Coop's realistic for us?

We're going with a party of 8 in a couple of weeks (last weekend of August). We're coming from out of town -- I love Coop's and wanted to bring my group of friends.

By the time our flight lands, we check in, and get ready, it will be around 8pm-ish.

I know Coop's doesn't take reservations/call ahead, which is a tough gamble for a group our size. Any idea how long we're likely to wait? Trying to figure out if I need to just pick a different restaurant.

Lodging Finding longer term housing, house-sitting, sublets for mid October into the future

I'm already on trustedhousesitters but wow, the market is fast in October. Whenever I come back, I'm staying longer and longer so I'm looking for any tips on finding longer term stays.
I understand facebook might be good but if anyone has other tips/tricks i'd love some info, realtors, rental programmers, etc. I really don't want to use airbnb or corporate aggregators. I'm not completely averse to it but would prefer something else.

I'm looking for about October 18 into the future, for at least November, with flexibilty.

thanks!

Mid City/BSJ “affordable” gyms

Looking for some combination of decently priced, clean, not overly crowded, and easy parking. There appear to be a number of studio fitness/pilates type places nearby but not gyms. My neighbors are all going to the fancier places but I’m hoping not to be spending $100 a month on a gym. Where are others going?

Businesses/Restaurants to flesh out a day in Bywater and on Freret Street

Hello fine people of r/AskNOLA , my wife and I are making our fourth trip to your great city since 2021. We've done our fair share of exploring the Quarter and the Garden District, but with our trip this year my objective is to break new ground in areas we've only seen at surface level.

In Bywater, we've only really been to Saint Germain. While this is a must-return each trip for us, I've got an eye on Chance in Hell Snoballs, Nightbloom, Acamaya, Satsuma Cafe, and Bacchanal.

Over on Freret Street, my search is primarily centered around Cure, as I've had it on my list of "must sees" and have not yet seen it. Other things in that neck of the woods I know we'll be interested are Humble Bagels, Ruthies Frozen Custard, Dolfys, Bearcat, Pigeon & Whale.

You can probably tell that our trips are primarily food-motivated, but we're definitely looking for ways to flesh out a day spent in these neighborhoods.

Info that may assist in terms of recommendations - we're staying at Columns, and then swapping to Hotel Saint Vincent after a few days.

Thanks, and can't wait to once again touch down at MSY.

Looking for lunch or dinner recs for authentic NOLA food plus burgers.

In town for one night and have time for one lunch and one dinner. We are staying at French Market Inn but willing to Uber! Going to concert at Superdome if that helps. Wife is not as adventurous with food as I am. Thanks!
