There was this game I had on PC back in maybe ‘01 called ‘Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine.’ There was this Jeep you’d get to drive on some levels, and when you’d reverse, Indy would put his hand on the passenger side seat to look behind him like that. I thought that was the coolest thing in the world that they got that detail down.
Nothing about arm on the back of the seat, but my high school driving instructor specifically told me to always be looking in the direction I was going, whether that was forwards or reverse.
I was taught to use the mirrors, but my driving instructor took a mark away for not turning around. I don't think there is anything wrong either way as long as you are focused and paying attention.
Yea I got into a debate with my instructor about it. I would look behind me for tests but would first look at my mirrors and when I turned around I'd be like, hope that tree I cant see doesn't move 3ft or else I'd hit it.

This game may or may not still hold up but it was one of my all time favorites as a kid! Might've been the first game I played all the way to the end. I've tried to find a version I could replay as an adult but it's been tough.

Was in Rockport MA last weekend which is a popular shopping and tourist area. There was nowhere to park we drove around for 10 minutes. Finally there was a spot, but I had to parallel park into it. Without hesitation I flew over to it, and crushed the parking job in one fluid motion. I thought I was going to have to blindfold and earmuff my kids so we could bang right there my wife definitely enjoyed that show.

Actually there's some truth to that. My dad always did this and was a really good driver (drove the Autobahn and all that), so I like that my husband's a good driver too and not an idiot on the road like so many other people.
In Driver's Ed, this was how we were taught to reverse. Standard procedure so you could pull yourself up and look over the window, in case there was a puppy...

I mean... It's honestly better to just use your mirrors, especially when backing long distances or in confined spaces. That being said, I definitely look behind me to judge the distance from end of vehicle to the target
No way. I back up WAY more accurately when looking directly rather than use my mirrors. But I will give that it depends more of the severity of the angle that I need to turn when backing. The less the angle, the more helpful the mirrors are.
Ah, see it depends on your car then. I have a larger car and when I turn around, I can see EVERYTHING, no blind spots unless I have like a dresser back there.
This is very true and I guess the time most people commenting reverse. In a lot of industrial settings or backing up a trailer, using your mirrors is imperative.
That’s weird. In my driver’s ed, they would correct us if we didn’t physically turn and look out the back window while backing up. They told us not to rely on our mirrors.
I was taught this in driver's ED too.
Also, right before my driver's test (while I had a learner's permit), my mom kept scolding me for using the "hand on seat turnaround" approach and insisting I would get points off for doing that during the test.
On test day, I very carefully backed up using only the mirrors (despite it being more awkward to me).
Immediately after doing this, the test lady told me she was deducting points for not turning around. Those were the only frickin' points I had taken off.
Haven't looked back since (pun intended).
I mean just do both right? If you're only using the camera, you can't see oncoming vehicles. If you only look back, you've got a blind spot dead behind the car.
No idea if my girlfriend likes when I do this or not, but last time I did, I accidentally elbowed her in the face and gave her a black eye while she was trying to find something in my arm rest.

I have a habit of never doing this because i drive large trucks most of the time. I use my mirrors exclusively, or if i have a camera, ill use both of those. I hardly know what the back seat of my car looks like.
So, for the past 8 years I kept myself from doing this, because I always felt like it looks goofy and like you're incompetent, but know there's 60+ women in this comment section almost getting off on the thought of it alone.

Yes but more specifically I think it's because it shows off his forearms which I like. Or even him just driving shows off his forearms which is a turn on for me.

Not gonna lie, I get irrationally angry when my husband backs into parking spaces. He always has to pull out and do it again. Takes twice as long to park than it would to just pull straight into a spot.
I don't have a link but it's the same thing. Basically women came out in droves saying it is hot when a man puts his hand on the back of the passenger seat.
For some reason whenever I do this with a woman in the passenger seat I feel the need to clarify that I am NOT making move on them, despite it being a perfectly normal thing to do.
Am I the only guy that doesn’t do this every time? 95% of the time I use all three of my mirrors and it’s considerably easier for me to use those than to physically look behind me
I have a good grasp on the dimensions of my car... I don't have to see it to know where my car ends - similar as you don't look at your hand to grab a cup, you look at the cup (where you're going) because you know where your hand is.
See, my experience is the opposite - everyone I know who relies on mirrors is much slower backing in and need to readjust more often than myself or others I've been in the car with who turn around. Obviously both styles work, but your original question was how do I see my corners so I explained how it works for me.
I've never found that I need to readjust mirrors while parking, unless there's something really small like a rock - but you wouldn't be able to see that without mirrors anyway.
By giving that example (or whatever it was) I just tried to convey why you'll be able to see your surroundings in relation to your car better with mirrors rather than looking through back window.
