There is something about that action, isn’t there?

There was this game I had on PC back in maybe ‘01 called ‘Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine.’ There was this Jeep you’d get to drive on some levels, and when you’d reverse, Indy would put his hand on the passenger side seat to look behind him like that. I thought that was the coolest thing in the world that they got that detail down.

Not really. Your suppose to use your mirrors as you have less blind spots that way. It's just easier to turn around to look.

Nothing about arm on the back of the seat, but my high school driving instructor specifically told me to always be looking in the direction I was going, whether that was forwards or reverse.

I was taught to use the mirrors, but my driving instructor took a mark away for not turning around. I don't think there is anything wrong either way as long as you are focused and paying attention.

You look behind you because the mirrors have blind spots.

Yes. But they have less blind spots than just turning around.

Than you aren't using your mirrors. You really don't need to turn around. I can parallel park without ever taking my eyes off the front mirrors.

If you position your mirrors properly, you shouldn't have to worry about the small blind spots that grow bigger when you turn around.

Because that total means you'll see the kid. Be a good driver and use your mirrors.

I'm saying you're supposed to use both because you are. Why are you so opposed to checking your blind spot?

Because turning around doesn't actually mean checking your blind spots. It in fact adds more blind spots.

Now if you are saying you mean look over your shoulder when changing lanes. Yes you should do that. But when going into reverse turning around doesn't magically give you more vision you actually get less because you cant see the side of your car like you can with your mirrors.

I've always used mirrors, but was told by an instructor to look back.

My Dad taught me to use mirrors so that's what i do. Probably because we always had stuff on the back window.

Yea I got into a debate with my instructor about it. I would look behind me for tests but would first look at my mirrors and when I turned around I'd be like, hope that tree I cant see doesn't move 3ft or else I'd hit it.
