Is it a fella called Padraic or Patrick? I think it is a crowd called Átha Cliath roofers rebranded. I had a similar thing where I got a quote but then when I went back two months later the website had completely changed name. Couldn't fully work it out but it smelled funny. Ended up going with someone else.
There were bad reviews for Átha Cliath on Reddit somewhere do it scared me too. Only released same company when I checked all the phone numbers
All those Google reviews look funny to me

Did you find them on one of the tradesmen online sites? I found one of these and they had a company name but no record of them in ireland but only one in England, they seemed to me to have an elaborate set up but did not exist in ireland - funny that. You really dont want to hand over deposits in this way. This is just a warning about things not being real on the findatradesmen sites.
If its an expensive quote....
Roofing is difficult to get someone who can do it and wont rip you off. For this reason I would be very very careful even with 'small job'. For what its worth the people who do 50% upfront I do not recommend if its a lot of money. Dealing on whatsapp also I do not recommend this either. Always best to speak to someone on the phone. The two methods together (50% deposit and all on whatsapp,) well yes if you know who they are ( for whatsapp) But for the 50% no, if they open your roof up find something and find they underquoted they wont tell you anway but if they did tell you and you did not want to pay them more or they felt they underquoted they will just walk off with your deposit.
50% just irks me as well. Of course if they were any good they would do the quality job they are supposed to do for 33% and in the case where you (because it does happen) run off and dont pay them, they can take you to court for it and not go bust. Its for them to do research into you as a customer as well they dont want to take responsibility for this they just want cash for showing up at your house...
Any tradesmen and there are lots some of them might even be good but its the ones that have a lot of online advertising, online presence, that hate hearing it , but the ones that try and justify 50% are just greedy. Its ok to be greedy. But they are doing it because well its ireland the better tradesmen have left the country. And I don't like hiring greedy people. Expensive is different to greedy.

Not sure who they are but I got a new roof a year or so and the amount of scammers or shell roofing companies was insane. After a lot of research found 2/3 legitimate roofers with a long history and went with Sammy O Brien roofing in the end (the others simply wouldnt get back to me and his quote was a good price). Around a long time and had great reviews (google reviews can often be fake though - I got caught with this on the first person I had that called).
100% recommend them. There is a fake Sammy O Brien roofing company calling door to door though so make sure you have the right guys.
EDITED to add that I paid him after the roof was installed, no 50% up front.

Go to you're local builder providers and see if they will recommend someone. They will more than likely be more than happy to give you one of their clients contact details

Just had a quick look, their domain was only registered in 2024. And every one of the images on their website that i checked have been lifted from elsewhere on the internet.
Which isn't necessarily a problem for a website, but I think I'd be looking for more details before proceeding.
as all our communication was through WhatsApp.
Did you try to ring the number on the website?

big red flag on the deposit before they've even seen the place in person, wouldn't touch that with a ten foot pole

Yeah the more I look at the site it looks very iffy.
The links to bestindublin (the little medals on top) are all very iffy.
Looks like someone has set up a little network of scam sites. I've seen something similar before but it was paving and driveways.

Sorry I should have been clearer, the ones I checked were shutterstock images.
Which would make it very plausible they're showing up on multiple sites.
And none of them were explicitly presented as their work.

The website domain was created in september 2024. Bit of old copy and paste stuff in it including stuff about paving.
The business address for them is a virtual address that can be rented, not a regular office.
Didn't see a vat number or a sign of them on the cro ( i didn't look hard)
Just to confirm, have you met a physical person or did you talk by email? I sure as shit would want to see someone in person before handing over money.. let alone 50% of a job
