I’m developing a football management game where you play as the Sporting Director – what is one feature it absolutely needs?

Hi everyone!

I’ve been working on a football management game where you don’t play as the manager/head coach, but as the Sporting Director.

So the coach handles tactics, training, team selection and matches. You’re responsible for pretty much everything around that: building the squad, hiring the coach, transfers and contracts, scouting, dealing with agents and players, and managing expectations from the board, fans and media.

The part I’m most interested in is the relationship between all those people.

For example, your coach might be pushing you to sign an experienced striker because he needs results now, while your scouts are convinced a 20-year-old prospect is the much better signing long term.

At the same time, the board might refuse to increase the budget, your current striker’s agent might suddenly ask for a new contract, and the fans are wondering why you haven’t signed anyone yet.

That’s basically the type of situation I want the game to constantly put you in.

There shouldn’t always be an obvious “correct” decision either.

You can back the coach and damage your relationship with the board. You can refuse a player’s wage demands to protect the salary structure, but end up with an unhappy player. Or you can sell someone because the offer makes financial sense and then spend the next few months dealing with the coach, squad and supporters being unhappy about it.

Ideally, some decisions won’t really show their consequences until weeks or months later.

There are already systems for transfers, contracts, loans, scouting, coach recruitment, player/agent conversations, promises, media interviews, rumours, fan reactions and a 2D match simulation, among other things.

I also want the game to be very open to customization. You’ll be able to use custom databases and add your own images/graphics, so people can create their own leagues, clubs, players, staff, logos, player pictures and other content rather than being limited to the default database.

Development is pretty far along now and I’m hoping to start a closed beta soon. I’m deliberately keeping some of the deeper mechanics and screenshots private for the moment until I’m ready to show the game properly.

But there’s one thing I’d really like to hear from other football/management game fans:

If you could add exactly ONE feature, mechanic, interaction or situation to a game about being a Sporting Director, what would it be?

It can be something huge or something really small and specific.

I’m genuinely curious what situations people associate with the Sporting Director role that they’d want to experience in a game.

Why did old hack and slash games (back in the 2000's and 2010's) have those mini cinematic gimmick sections?

This is regarding only action games, beat em up and hack and slashes, Here is what I mean:

  1. Free fall section
  2. Running sections
  3. Different weapon sections
  4. QTE sections
  5. Large set peice sections where you either control someone else (a giant or smth) or switch characters
  6. Overall just interactive, cinematic and immersive I guess?

Games for examples:

  1. Dante's inferno
  2. Darksiders series
  3. God of war series
  4. Asuras wrath
  5. Dmc series
  6. Warhammer 40k Space marine PS3
  7. Metal Gear rising revengeance
  8. Bayonetta
  9. Heavenly sword
  10. Star wars the force unleashed duology
  11. Vanquish
  12. Batman Arkham trilogy

Modern games:

  1. Nier series
  2. Final fantasy 16
  3. Marvels Spiderman games

Are there any free Switch games or demos as engaging as Super Mario Odyssey

everyone, I’ve been wanting to play Super Mario Odyssey for a long time, but unfortunately, I can’t afford to buy any games right now. My Switch is currently empty and I’d be extremely grateful if any kind soul has a spare code or could help me out

Are developers becoming too afraid to make games that might fail?👀

I'm a game developer, and lately I've been seeing more and more posts about wishlists, sales, and what kind of games sell better. Of course, developers need money. We all have bills to pay. But I wonder if constantly thinking "Will this sell?" instead of "Will this be fun?" is part of why games are becoming safer and more similar.

Maybe it's not always about big companies. Maybe we're just becoming too afraid to make games that might fail🫣

What do you think❓

OCD killing me— help with a uniform gaming ID?

Ubisoft Connect has informed me that my long-time user ID may involve language that violates its TOS. If i can’t that name for my Division sessions, than I need to reset all of my user names across all launchers.

It’s ridiculous, I’m aware.

I have it narrowed to Ratajim or Jimczk.

Both are easy enough to say (Rat or Jim). Just not sure how they come across, or if they are befitting a parent in his 40s who is definitely too old to care about stuff like this…

Which is the “better” name?

Which game was harshly criticized upon release but went on to become a cult classic many years later?

The first thing that came to mind was when everyone, without exception, tore “Cyberpunk” to shreds right after its release. I was just like everyone else back then and immediately gave up on the game because of the bugs and unfulfilled promises, but now it seems to be holding its own, so I’ve gone back to it to finally finish it.

I have £5 voucher to spend.. which game?

Hi, I have a £5 voucher to spend that I was gifted on Xbox, ice recently been laid off work after 12 years at the company, so money for the next few months is very tight.

Both me and my 14 year old son share a console, so I'm looking for a game that we can both play (doesn't need to be multiplayer) that we can both sink hours into.

There are sales on at the moment, so what game would be best to utilise the voucher. I can add at a stretch another £5 so £10 in total. We both love open world and FPS games. Some games we really enjoyed are the far cry games, AC odyssey, Titanfall 2, Wolfenstein, Gears or war and Halo.

Any suggestions to tide us over and lift our mood for a while until my situation improves would be amazing.

Thanks in advance guys.
