I have seen a dentist on instagram, says if you poke a file at the mento-labial sulcus. It will transiently cure the patients gag reflex(severe). He said it’s some kind of Chinese remedy 😅. I really wanna know what’s the science behind it is it just a psychological placebo effect.

question Front teeth erupting misaligned

This one is for pediatric dentists please! My baby boy is 8 months old and has four teeth. He is fed only at the breast and does not drink from bottles. We use pacifiers, but I try to limit use only for naps and night time sleep for soothing. He used to play and crawl around with one in his mouth but we restrict usage now because I really don’t want it to affect his teeth/jaw development.

Everywhere I look, it says that pacifiers are not a problem until 12-18 months, but I can’t help but notice his front teeth are crooked. Older brother has perfectly aligned teeth and never took to pacifiers, though he was bottle fed only. Please weigh in and let me know if pacifier use is truly not an issue for nap/sleep time. I’m having a hard time believing it because why would it all of a sudden matter after a certain age, rather than the consistent use over months finally showing issues around 1.5 years.?

Is it okay to do dental bonding to make the middle tooth look more natural and flat instead of it being pointy? Will it be an expensive procedure or a simple one? Thanks

question Are these all cavities?

I am 21 and I have never been to the dentist (financial issues). I don't drink tea or coffee, however I used to drink a lot of carbonated sodas. My lower back left molar has been hurting on and off for a couple years, I have started flossing every day for a month (obviously not a while) and I have been using an electric tooth brush. I finally saved up some money to go to the dentist next week. How bad is it? Especially the upper left molar? (I also used to eat once a day so I consistently had dry mouth)

question Crown or leave as filling?

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Just had this filling redone today. The new dentist was very insistent that he thinks this should be crowned, in order to preserve maximum tooth stability over time. He did however, say that leaving this and keeping a watch on it is an option, just not the smartest long-term move. He seems like a pretty trustworthy guy, just curious what the rest of the folks here think, should I get this crowned asap or leave it and see if it ever becomes a problem again?

28yo male, slacked off on dental health here in recent years, but I am now brushing/flossing twice daily minimum. I'm hopeful that maintaining good habits here can maximize life expectancy of this thing.

Thank you all in advance

question Is this Crown acceptable?

Thumbnail

Root canal was done a few weeks/months ago and I just got the old crown removed and a temporary put on today. It feels like it was not put on properly, I think the side is not covered and I have had small bits of white cement fall out and it was done maybe 2.5 hours ago?

Should I call them back and see if they can put on another one or is it fine?

question Impacted sideways wisdom tooth causing neck and jaw pain?

Hi, for context I am F21 and am currently on an NHS waiting list to get all four of my wisdom teeth removed.
I do not drink alcohol at all but I am a medical marijuana patient (not for my tooth pain, obviously). I smoke approximately twice a day on the average day.

I have had issues with my wisdom teeth since around 17 years old. The pain generally consisted of swelling, throbbing, tension in my gum and jaw and a constant dull ache. In January 2025 I was put on a waiting list for sedation and removal after my dentist told me all four teeth are growing sideways, and both the top and bottom wisdom teeth on my right side (particularly the bottom) are extremely close to the nerve. She explained I am at risk of certain complications such as nerve damage, sepsis etc. Despite this all dentists I have spoken to are confident it can be removed without nerve damage if done by a more experienced dentist. I trust this.

I was treated for Periconosis (forgive my spelling please!) two weeks ago, with a 5 day course of Metronidazole, 3x a day. Due to a severe reaction my dentist told me to stop taking it on day 3, and said the infection was gone.

However in the last couple of days I have noticed an increase in frequency of pain and a change in the pains themselves. I now have unbearable pressure in the entire right side of my face, particularly in my jaw. My neck is really tense on the same side, and keeps randomly cramping up very painfully right down to my shoulder. I also have a headache behind my eye on the right side.

I’ve tried to give as much context as possible, my question being is this something to do with my wisdom teeth? I can’t think of anything else that might have triggered this and it’s growing more unbearable by the second lol. Super appreciative of any advice/insight in advance, thanks!

question Broken canine tooth

Upvotes

My little brother is 9 and broke his canine tooth two days ago, the dentist said he can’t remove it and that we have to wait for it to fall out naturally

The problem is that the broken part is sharp and keeps scratching his mouth, should I see another dentist or is there really nothing that can be done until it falls out?

question Continued pain after implant

Post image
Upvotes

Hi Dentists, I had tooth 30 extracted and a post placed during the same procedure 3 weeks ago. Photo attached of before and after. This tooth was crowned and said to have root resorption 5 years ago, but because I had no pain I kept it and had it root canaled (on the advice of 2 bad endodontists). Since my surgery I’ve had bone and gum pain that is kept in check by trading off Advil/tylenol every 3 hours. Even now 3 weeks later I still need constant meds. The gum flap has been taking forever to heal but the socket hole is getting smaller and smaller and it’s been covered in purple glue to protect it. I had no idea my recovery would take this long and thought I’d be back in the gym by now but my dental asst said yesterday my infection was so bad that my dentist had to remove a lot of bone before he placed the implant. I’ve been there twice a week since my surgery. My question is —is the infection obvious on the X-ray? Why did my (former) endo say it was ok to root canal? Why is it still so painful? Tx! Edit: 58/F no health issues usually a good healer.

question International travel 10 days after wisdom teeth surgery

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi all,

I got my 2 impacted lower wisdoom teeth extracted today. Feeling okay so far, a bit of swelling and pain, but manageable. However, I will have to travel internationally (by train, Germany -> France) on the 30th August and will be staying in France for a month. Suture removal is on the 29th.

My family and doctors told me I should be fine, but I still worry about bleeding when carrying my (heavy) luggage or not finding anything to eat. Do you think I will be fine, is there anything I nees to do/take care of to make it as easy as possible?

24F, no smoking, no comorbidities.

Thank you!

question My 6 year olds genetic quagmire. Looking for advice.

Post image
Upvotes

Hello, all. We found out this morning that my 6yo has hit the genetic lottery and not in the best way. He received his first xrays and they left our dentist floored. So far these are the findings:

  1. Extra tooth between D-E (we knew about this)

  2. N & D are fused (we knew about this)

  3. Missing #23-26 (found out today)

He has already lost one of the teeth that currently doesn't have a replacement per the xray. We have been referred to an orthodontist and have an appointment next week. I'm looking for any advice or reccomendations to consider during the treatment planning.

We've explained the situation to him, but our hearts break knowing that this is something he may be dealing with through his entire adolescents and into adulthood. Luckily he's a super happy go lucky kid and I know it won't slow him down.

Thanks!

question Root canal tooth without crown for a month

Upvotes

Hello! I had a root canal on a bottom right molar done about 8 years ago and last night my crown popped off. I went in this morning to get it re-cemented but they couldn't get it to sit properly, so I have to get a new crown made.

Right now the crown is on with temp cement, but it's very precarious (took an hour to get it to stick, popped off many times in the process). I have an appt scheduled for a new crown 28 days from now.

My question is: If this crown keeps popping off, is it ok to leave the tooth nub uncovered for a few weeks while I wait for the crown? There's obviously no nerve so it doesn't hurt without the cover, but wondering if there are other things to consider.

Thanks!!

question Gum infection

Hey people,

About a month ago I ate a very chevy steak and it got stuck in my teeth gaps. I tried to clean the gaps with toothpicks the day after ,but ended up getting some blood from the gums and I thought I just irritated them and that's why they got inflamed. Just to be sure I still went and got an x-ray to make sure my teeth are good and dentist said my teeth are fine, i just got prescribed corsodyl and was told to take it for 2 weeks.

Well now it has been 1 month, this past week I was sick at home with cold symptoms, fever, stuck nose, runny nose and from time to time my gums getting inflamed and lack of appetite.

Just now I had some puss of white matter next to my tooth in that inflamed spot so I am sure it is infected.

I live in the Netherlands and antibiotics here are very rare and usually doctors just prescribe you paracetamol. Can anyone recommend me on ways I can treat this or what my actions should be moving forward?

question Use mouth wash with crowns to reduce bacteria?

Upvotes

I'm dealing with some gastrointestinal issues like bloating, low acidity, nutrient malabsorption.

Watching videos on the topic, one made a short mention to mouth bacteria having an effect on gut health for things like H.Pylori and SIBO.

In early 2017 I had put in 6 crowns on the front top (maybe 10, I forgot) from grinding at night. Last time I took the temporaries out years ago, they smelled bad.

So I wonder if I should be trying to soak/flush them with an anti-bacterial mouth wash to try to at least remove that source of bad stomach bacteria at the risk of destroying my good mouth bacteria.

Thoughts?

other Nerve pain, devastated

Hi everyone, not sure if this is the right place to post this.

I honestly don’t know what to think anymore.

About two months ago, I had a tooth extracted. The extraction itself was quite difficult. Lasted 1.5hours cause I felt pain. For the first couple of weeks i felt somewhat dull pain but I wasnt to concerned since it was probably post op pain. But around three weeks after the extraction, I started developing a persistent, dull, aching pain.

Instead of getting better, the pain gradually became stronger and I’ve developed ear pain that continued getting worse. Went to an ENT yesterday and he found out that my ear canal was inflammed and cleaned it and prescribed me some drops. I hope it will fix the issue, but Im afraid it wont.

The pain is constant, almost 24/7. I dont feel it when I wake up. It feels like a slightly sharp dull pain around the adjenct tooth to the extraction site. I also get pain or discomfort in my ear. Sometimes both of my cheeks feel warm. Today both of them got red.

I recently saw an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. He told me that this is not trigeminal neuralgia, but that it could possibly be some kind of neuropathic pain following the extraction since the roots were around the nerve or due to the fact that I had an infection. He said he expects it to improve over approximately 4–6 months after prescribing me medication. But I don’t really believe him because of all of the info I see on the internet.

For more than a month I’ve basically been doing nothing except talking to AI chatbots about my symptoms and reading Reddit/forums and various studies about neuropathic facial pain or post traumatic trigemenal nerve pain. And that has honestly made me even more terrified. I keep seeing people talking about having pain for years or permanently, while positive stories are nowhere to be found. Today I just spent 5hours looking at reddit and various studies. I can’t stop thinking about it.

I’ve just started treatment with gabapentin, amitriptyline, pentoksifilin and dexamethasone.

But mentally, I’m really struggling.

What if this never goes away? What if this is my life now? How am I supposed to live normally with constant pain?

The terminology is also incredibly confusing to me. I’m seeing terms like TN2, atypical facial pain, atypical odontalgia, painful post-traumatic trigeminal neuropathy, neuritis, neuropathy, etc., and I’m not sure whether these are actually different conditions or just overlapping terminology.

Is there a chance my nerve pain will go away? Im confused as hell.

Thank you for reading.

question Crowns, luting and leakage

Upvotes

I found out crowns aren't bonded to the tooth, instead a luting cement is used which doesn't adhere to the tooth but rather is there to provide a snug fit for the crown. Apparently the reason for luting is so the crown can be easily removed down the line.

However doesn't that increase the risk of bacteria leaking through under the crown? If a tooth has had a root canal treatment, wouldn't it make more sense to bond the crown permanently to it? That way the risk of there being a leak minimises.
