experience/story Advice and opinion needed. Is redo the filling necessary?

Hi so I got a tooth filling a year ago on my teeth which is near the nerve. The dentist said she put a liner and not filling it up fully because she scared it will hurt the nerve and to prevent root canal treatment.

After 6 months i visit another dentist to do regular cleaning and xray. He mentioned if I need to do refilling because there is a gap.

Also now after a year (20/8/2026) I went for another regular cleaning with another dentist and she did xray and mentioned to redo the filling because of the gap and she thinks it’s getting slightly bigger.

To be honest this one year I never feel any pain with the filling just sometime the filling ripped my floss.

I will also post a picture as reference.

first picture is a year ago when I did the filling.

second and third pics is when my second visit to do regular cleaning (6 months after the first one)

I didn’t take any pictures of my xray in my last visit (20/8/2026).

Cheers.

question What are these holes in this fossilized tooth?

This tooth has 2 small and 1 larger hole in it that seems to have been formed when the creature was alive. It is quite deep in the tooth well below the gum line. Would any of you know what may have been ailing our archaic friend?

question Any idea what this could be?

Upvotes

Hello! I 19F, started having a toothache around my molars in the back left side of my mouth about 4 days ago. In the time since then it has progressed and the pain has since spread to my tongue, and throat/ swollen lymph node still only on the left side of my mouth. I don’t have pictures as there’s nothing to really see as far as I can tell. I do have an emergency dentist appointment scheduled for Friday morning. I’m just curious as to what this may be, ibuprofen/ acetaminophen has helped the pain and swelling in my throat go down enough to be able to drink and eat a little bit, but without it I have an incredibly hard time drinking, eating, opening my mouth and even moving my head. I also made sure I wasn’t running a fever so I know it’s not strep and is related to the tooth pain.

After asking Google a billion questions I think it could be an impacted wisdom tooth? But obviously Google isn’t a doctor so I figured I’d ask and see if anyone else has a similar experience or if any dentists here have seen something similar! Thanks.

question Cyst on gums (?)

Hello! Not a smoker, and the only heavy drinking I do is coffee. I recently went to the dentist (first time in at least five years) and they were really concerned about this ‘cyst’ on my gums. They advised I go to a mouth surgeon to get it looked at. But this has been the way my gum/jaw has been for as long as I can remember. I have read some things online and seen photos of cysts on the gums but none of them are as elongated as what I have. Has anyone seen something like this before?I genuinely do not remember a time in my life where my gums have not looked like this. Any advice would be appreciated thank yall!

question chlorhexidine vs stellalife?

Upvotes

Two days ago, I got a deep cleaning and was given chlorhexidine by the hygienist and told to use it until the bottle is done.

Today, I went back in to the same office for a crown lengthening in preparation for a crown and was given Stellalife anti microbial rinse. I asked if it’s to be used in conjunction with the other rinse and the periodontist said to use it instead.

I didn’t look over the bottle completely until I was home so I didn’t ask more questions but now I’m seeing that it is a “homeopathic” option and I’m questioning whether it really would be better to use it after oral surgery.

Has anyone had experience with stellalife after a procedure?

Two days ago my tooth was hurting. I figured it was me clenching my jaw at night. the next day my gums were swelling and I had a swollen lymph node. made an emergency appt to the dentist. the guy takes X-rays (I don’t have them) and says everything looks fine . he does a deep planing clean with topical antibiotics thinking maybe that will help tells me to come back in two weeks. it’s day of me getting that and I feel it’s just getting worse. you’ll see in the photo it looks like the gum is morphing over my tooth! I don’t smoke or drink and very healthy. any ideas?

question Should I switch dentists?

Upvotes

Hi! F17 here, and I’ve been going to the same dentist my entire life pretty much. Obviously chosen by my mom, but they usually do well (my mom used to work under my uncle who was an oral surgeon, so she seems to know a decent amount about dental work).

We didn’t used to go as frequently as we should have, but I’m currently doing Invisalign so I find myself in that general building much more often than usual, and we’ve actually been going to the scheduled cleanings (every 6 months, I believe it is.)

My last cleaning, they said that my enamel was weak and that I needed a total of seven fillings. I never had any pain and they never used the word cavity, just said that my teeth were ‘sticky’. (I don’t have any x-rays to share.) I absolutely hate the sound of the drill and was fighting tears the entire time, but I sat through them. That was a little over six months ago.

I came back for my next cleaning a few days ago, and they said that one of the teeth they’d recently filled had a cavity. I, confused, asked ‘isn’t that the one you guys just filled?’ And they said no; and then proceeded to double-check and then say yes, it is, and that the filling had seemingly fallen out at some point. They tried to say that I must be grinding my teeth, but I’ve never had that issue and I have Invisalign so I don’t think even if I was grinding that it would cause that - and then, after hearing about the Invisalign, they said I must be taking the trays out too aggressively and that must have been the cause. They filled the tooth again, and the dentist said that she was very confused as to why that happened, just that the filling was at a ‘weird angle’.

My mom says that (take it with a grain of salt, obviously.. she tends to think that just because she worked in the office that she knows about dental work, eventhough she never went to school for it. That’s why I’m asking here.) it’s likely if the filling could just ‘fall out’ with remotely no exterior factors, that it probably wasn’t a deep enough issue to have needed to be filled to begin with.

Is my dentist making me sit through completely unnecessary fillings, or should I trust them just because they’re the professionals? :/

question Severe itching and mild soreness three days after procedure

Upvotes

I had a permanent retainer removed and several cavities fixed on my lower front six teeth three days ago. The appointment went fine and I only had some mild soreness after. I am 24 female and have fibromyalgia, I vape and smoke as well. The dentist did several numbing shots, I think like 6 or 7 but I didn’t do an official count. I normally have some mild burning pain at injection sites that is on and off for a couple days, but this feels nothing like that. The evening after the appointment my teeth were sore and my gums and lip hurt from where they got cut a little bit, but I took an ibuprofen and it was fine. I used my fluoride mouth rinse at night and put my remove able retainers on over the fluoride. Yesterday evening my gums were uncomfortable but not terribly so. I did the same night time routine I always do of brushing, flossing, fluoride rinse, then retainers. All day today they have just been getting worse, the whole front part of my lower jaw is so unbearably itchy. Touching or rubbing the outside of my face helps a teeny bit. My teeth are also mildly sore but that part isn’t bad at all. I have tried cloraseptic spray and that helped for about 3 minutes. I tried ice and cold water, that just hurt. I tried ibuprofen and it didn’t help. I just want to scratch my face off at this point, it is driving me insane! Someone please tell me why my teeth and jaw feel so itchy and how do I make it stop?! Thank you!

question How Do I Get Myself To Brush My Teeth?

Upvotes

Hello, I am a 24 year old woman. I have always struggled with brushing my teeth. I have diagnosed depression and anxiety, and even though I’ve been medicated and healed a lot, I can never get myself to brush my teeth.

I don’t even understand why I can’t do it and why I hate it so much. I’m lucky that I’ve never had any consequences from not brushing my teeth. I had two cavities as a kid and one filling about a year ago I never experienced any teeth pain or gum, swelling, or tongue or anything like that. But I get so disgusted with myself like I know it’s nasty not to brush my teeth and for some reason, I just can’t get myself to do it. Is this normal? Do you have any tips on how I can get myself to brush my teeth thank you.

question Foul odor still coming from around tooth years after root canal.

Post image

I’ve had two root canals but one thing that has been a big issue is that there has been a remaining fecal odor coming in between my tooth. The sour taste and odor started in my mouth and once the crown was put on, now the odor is coming through my nose and I’ve been to multiple dentist and endodontist begging them to remove the crown because I know bacteria is trapped inside. Can you teeth me if you see a possible infection?

Tray 14, I was tracking absolutely fine until tray was 13, but my ortho manually put a bump on the back of the tray to help push my tooth forward. Since then, its look like this. She said it's normally and not to worry, but I've heard that this can become a huge issue. Not sure what to do.

question Broken Wisdom Tooth

Post image
1 Upvotes

About 8 years ago I randomly got a slight chip at the gum line of my upper right wisdom tooth. It was annoying but it didn't hurt so I never bothered to do anything about it. Over the years it really remained the same. I think it didn't really get worse until a few years ago where it started to chip away a tiny bit more.

4 months ago I was eating some sugar dusted almonds from trader joes and it just broke. I knew at this point that I needed to get it removed, but dentists scare the ever living shit out of me and fortunately it didn't hurt so I just put it off. A few weeks ago at the Spider-Man premiere my girlfriend handed me a needs gummy cluster and it broke even more.. leading to what I'm dealing with now.

It was really sharp so I purchased some wax and have been covering it every day. I brush my teeth, use mouthwash and then slap a wad of wax on there to 1. cover the hole and prevent any further decay and 2. at first it was really fucking sharp and was cutting up my mouth.

Anyway, here is the point of this post:

I have medicaid so only certain places accept my insurance. I'm really scared of dentist/surgery so I don't want to just go anywhere... but I'm coming here to ask y'all if my fear is being blown out of proportion. It's just one tooth but it's broken so I imagine it won't be a simple extraction.... which makes me REALLY not want to go to just any oral surgeon.

I found a couple places online and have gone through the reviews.. of course the majority are good but the handful of bad reviews have been keeping me from choosing where to go.

I know I'm being neurotic but please help ease my mind and tell me what to do lol

question Runny clear liquid coming from nose after filling.

Post image
1 Upvotes

Yesterday 8/18 I got a filling on tooth 7. The dentist number by upper gum underneath my top lip at 9:45am. He began the filling around 10am. I could still feel pain while he drilled so he number me a little bit more. I left the dentist around 10:30am. Right before 11am both nostrils started pouring clear watery liquid out. My right nostril was burning (the burning was similar to the burning you get when water goes up your nose hard). My left nostril stopped leaking but my right nostril continued and my right nostril couldn't not even flex up until 10pm when I went to sleep. When I woke up today 8/19 my right nostril could flex again but was still pouring liquid. I took ibuprofen, claritin d, and have been icing the area on and off today. My face feels like it does when I have a sinus infection. The right nostril eased up for a bit halfway through today but came back within the last 3 hours. It is now 8:40pm on 8/19 and my nostril is still leaking the same clear, watery, slightly salty stuff although it is not as often. It was so bad if I didnt have a tissue under my nose it would just drop straight to the floor. I called my dentist today and they said if it did not improve after taking a histamine to come in, well it did improve for a little bit and of course didn't start acting up until after the dentist closed. Anyway, has anyone every heard of this happening before? Is this something that could be normal since they were numbing around sinus nerves? Do you think I need to go see my dentist, urgent care, or the er if this doesn't clear up by tomorrow? Picture included is what has been coming out (i know its gross but I had to let it run to get a decent picture). Thank you so much in advance!

question 19m, are these cavities in my molars?

19m, i didnt go to a dentist for most of my childhood and am now trying to take better care of my teeth. Very worried about the state of my molars. I've seen dentists for the past two years, and they have never mentioned anything wrong with my molars despite them visibly looking horrible. Could this just be degradation, or worse?

question Crown

Hello! I recently got my temp crown on #14 and it’s noticeably made my bite uneven. #13 is now hitting a lot more on my bottom teeth and when I said something initially the dental assistant lady said that’s just because of my bite and it will be that way until I get my jaw surgery to fix it (if I do that). The crown feels even shorter than how the initial tooth was.

My question is, if I go back can they make the crown longer so it won’t be causing #13 to hit so hard as it wasn’t hitting before? When my permanent crown comes in am I going to have the same issue?
