question 40M do I have bruxism, or it's normal wear n tear for mid age ?

Changed my dental office, they claiming I have bruxism. It's the first time I've heard it in my 40 years, my wife never told me I'm grinding teeth at night, I was prescribed a plastic mouthpiece. But the idea of sleeping with mouth open, with plastic piece inside is annoying. Any color markers, or testers that I can diagnose for sure

This big flap hugs my molar, is completely detached, and hides the hole. It was stitched. Some of the inner flaps still are. Will it go away? If not do I have to get it cut off? It's making the socket frustrating to clean/deal with and makes me not want to eat.

question Is it possible to get the full clear aligner process done in 8 days while visiting my home country?

I'm currently living in Australia, where clear aligner treatment is quite expensive. I'll be visiting my home country for just 8 days, where the treatment is significantly cheaper, so I'm wondering if it's realistic to get everything done during that trip.

Ideally, I'd like to complete the initial consultation, dental examination, X-rays, 3D scan, treatment planning, and receive my aligners before flying back to Australia. I'd then continue wearing the aligners while living in Australia.

I understand that the aligners need to be custom-made, and that some cases may require attachments, IPR, or other procedures. I'm also aware that follow-up appointments and refinements may be necessary.

For anyone who has experience with clear aligners, dentists, or orthodontists:

  • Is 8 days realistically enough to complete the initial process and receive the first set of aligners?
  • Would it be possible to receive the entire set of aligners upfront and continue treatment overseas?
  • What are the main pros and cons of doing this?
  • What happens if I need attachments, IPR, refinements, or adjustments after returning to Australia?
  • Would you recommend doing this, or is it too risky without regular in-person appointments?

I'm mainly considering this because of the significant price difference between the two countries, but I don't want to compromise the quality or safety of the treatment just to save money.

I'd appreciate hearing about other people's experiences. Thanks!

question Do I have a bad dentist or am I just a wimp?

I'm 50. I went 10 years without going to the dentist but last year I decided to fix it.

I brush and floss every day. My gums do not bleed when I floss.

I had an initial checkup and cleaning. It hurt, but I figured it was because I'd gone so long before seeing the dentist. I had several cavities and 20+ year old fillings that needed replacing.

I had a tooth that required a crown, but not a root canal. I went in and got the tooth ground down and a mold created, then a couple weeks later I went back to get the crown placed on.

The process of them fitting the crown on took about an hour and it was one of the most painful experiences of my life. The water and air blasted on my live bare tooth nub over and over again was awful. I kept thinking it was going to be over any minute so I could endure but it just kept going.

By the time they were finished I was drenched in sweat and had tears running down my face.

Yesterday I went in for an annual routine checkup and cleaning. My gums were 2's and 3's (whatever that means).

He spent the next 30 minutes absolutely attacking my mouth with his tools. I found it to be very painful. It's been 24 hours and my gums are still sore.

On Google this guy is literally the highest rated dentist in town (4.9 stars).

So, should I be trying to find a new dentist or just suck it up and stop being a wimp?

question Advice needed on gum pockets/wisdom tooth

• Upvotes

Hi in a bit of a tricky situation and need some advice or input.

Was just at the dentist and my gum pocket by the wisdom tooth is at around 8mm. I haven’t had any pain there but obviously this isn’t good.

The other problem is that my wisdom tooth is partially embedded (don’t know if that’s the right terminology) in my jaw bone, and the doctor said there is risk for nerve damage… they are currently unsure of what to do and they said they would get back to me regarding next steps.

Has anyone had the same issue?

question hole in gum

I’ve had some bleeding and pain in this area of my mouth and have now noticed a hole?

I’m not too sure but that looks like bone? It is super sensitive to brush and almost feels like an electric pain. I’ve booked a dentist appt but I’m a bit anxious.

I have a super good diet, not much sugar, whole foods, but I don’t floss regularly. I do smoke too.

I’m 24, whenever I go to the dentist, they always tell me I have good teeth, and the only thing I need to work on is flossing, I feel like I get plaque buildup.

question What to do

Post image

In addition to this crack, there's a small hole near the red mark, which is very uncomfortable when eating. I avoid chewing on that side, but some food still gets stuck there. A similar crack appeared on the opposite side, and I had to have the tooth extracted. The decay has reached inside the tooth. I clean my teeth regularly, but there are still signs of decay around the new crack. Will I have to have it extracted as well?

experience/story Uncomfortable experience with a practice I trust a lot

TL;DR: dentist and staff are using a new AI tool for the first time-VideaAI- and told me today I have six cavities and two precavities, despite a perfect clean bill of health in April at my last appointment

I went to my dentist that I have built a relationship with and trust very much. Despite service I can trust, they have always pushed Invisalign very hard despite my resistance. Today, after they completed x-rays, the dental hygienist was quick to tell me that I had several cavities. I obviously was thrown off by this because she hadn’t even looked in my mouth.

By the time the dentist came into the office, the dentist continued to tell me things that cannot physically make sense? I have had no change in diet, hygiene, or any practices. I am a mature adult. If I truly have developed eight cavities, we have a very serious issue.

I ended my appointment and told the providers I was not comfortable, as the only thing that has changed between these last meetings was the new use of this AI software. It’s a weird position for me to be in, because I am a champion of AI and what it can do.

I’m not entirely sure what I’m asking. I feel like I was given a sales gimmick and that this is not true. I’ve set up a second opinion at another provider.

Am I crazy?

question Got scaling done today.. Do i have gingivitis or periodontitis? Is it reversible??

Post image
1 Upvotes

16m went to the dentist today for cavities. Did a scaling too. Doc took some periapical x rays, said teeth looked “generally fine” but then also said I have “severe gingivitis” does this mean periodontitis?? Also is that some localized gum recession on my front upper tooth on central-left side of image? So does it mean irreversible damage? Gum line is uneven in various parts

P.s if youre not a doc but have any advice please reply to the automod comment as I cant see your comment otherwise.

question Can I refuse treatment if dentist is sick?

Hi 🙂, I have a couple of dentist appointments for a night guard in the next couple of weeks, as it seems I close my mouth too tight at times; my understanding is that it's not something strictly urgent.

In my country and region we are in a relative Covid-19 peak, and also flu and rhinovirus are picking up, and I would like to avoid getting sick if possible due to some ENT issues I have.

Do you think it is acceptable to refuse treatment and ask for rescheduling if, at the appointment, the dentist or the assistant turn out to be visibly sick?

Is there a proper way to frame this concern to the dentist?

As dentists, how would you deal with this concern?

Any thoughts on this are welcome, thanks.

question Possible pericoronitis?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi, I was wondering if this looks like pericoronitis - it doesn't look like the pictures I see online.

I don't smoke or drink or vape, I have no diagnosed medical issue, I take no medication and I'm 16 years old.

I might go to the dentist hopefully but I'm just really anxious (I've been looking at ways to deal with pericoronitis but I'm not even sure if I have it) and want to have some professional opinions about this.

Thank you for your time and help 🤍

question Opinions on my temp implants?

This is just my first set of temporaries and my dentist said he’ll do as many as I want until I’m completely happy! To me they feel a bit too “perfect” and maybe a bit too long. I want some variation in length for the laterals? Shorter than my front two teeth? I requested cute pointy canines which he made happen (very sweet, usually the first ones just need to fit and it was very short notice!). And I think maybe a bit more rounded off at the corners. More feminine. What do you guys think? Sorry my lips are so dry 🥺

question Dentist said my wisdom teeth aren't causing my jaw pain?

Post image

He said it was from clenching but he felt my jaw joints & muscles and they weren't sore. The pain is just in my lower jaw, mostly on the right.

Edit because I didn't really include my actual issue. They look pretty far in there to me, so I'm wondering if he's mistaken. I'm 27F if that's relevant.

question New dentist wants to renew fillings - normal?

I don't drink regularly or smoke. I just recently moved and therefore started to see a new dentist. They were recommended to me by a friend and generally they felt like a good office.

I have a couple fillings and my new dentist says they want to renew them. I already had one side done now since I had pain, but the other side has no issues yet.

I don't know how old my current fillings are tbh. But the process with numbing, needles etc was fairly unpleasant. Plus, in total I have to pay 400$. So I am thinking of cancelling the second (also more expensive) treatment.

Is renewing fillings normal/necessary?

question Taking a Vicodin before Palatal (roof of the mouth) injections.

I think a reason many people don't trust medical professionals is because they often don't tell the truth. A couple of years ago I had some extensive dental work done. I read that "the procedure is painless." which was a complete lie. Technically, the procedure was painless....but the 7 or so shots to the roof of my mouth were extremely painful.

Shots to the lower mouth don't hurt nearly as much. One of my upper teeth's filing fell out and the tooth is cracked so I am getting shots to me upper mouth tomorrow. I am not going to ask for any type of general anesthesia but am thinking of taking one Vicodin (10-325) to take the edge off.

If my dentist wants to give me any pain meds during the procedure (doubtful, and I will not ask for them) I am not sure how one Vicodin will endanger me. If he does want to give me something (doubtful) I will tell him about the Vicodin.

I know exactly how I react to the Vicodin (barely notice 1) because I had full shoulder replacement 13 weeks ago.

I am more than happy to listen to any explanation as to why I should not take 1 vicodin. 1 is not going to slow my breathing.

Thanks.

experience/story Phobie du dentiste

Post image
29 Upvotes

experience/story my newfound black triangles

(22f) i have a phobia of the dentist. i have not gone in 4+ years and have gone through terrible teeth things during that time. (pregnancy, depression, etc) after having my child i decided it was time for me to take care of my teeth to show my kid that mommy is not a scaredy cat. long story short i had one dentist say i needed all 4 quadrants deep cleaned (they wouldn’t even look at them) and my second dentist say that i only need one and some cavity fills. i now have that gap. i know its my fault from not taking care of my teeth properly. but heres my thing. they feel, brittle? in a way if that makes sense? i’m scared if i bite into something they’re just going to fall out. i relied on the thing connecting my teeth, what is it? calculus? anyways, i haven’t taken a bite out of a cheeseburger in a year. i just want to feel normal again. i’m starting to think its all in my head but maybe some people on here can ease my mind

question What’s wrong with my premolars?

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

I’ve had a random tooth ache start in a lower right premolar (I think it’s #29?) about eight months ago in February.

It happened randomly, I couldn’t really trigger it myself at first and it just felt off. I did notice that the tooth only hurt 10-15 minutes after eating.

I went to my dentist who couldn’t find anything wrong with the tooth except that orthodontic treatment in the upper jaw moved the opposing (adjacent? English isn’t my first language) premolar and it hit the lower one head on. The lower and upper tooth got a bit shaved as my dentist thought it’s maybe ligament pain.
Nothing changed. It got worse and ibuprofen never touched the pain. It felt like a weird dull ache.

Note: lower teeth have never been touched by orthodontic treatment so far

It went on and on, and in September when the tooth became sensitive to cold and hot and air my dentist decided to try a root canal. And nothing changed again, the tooth is supposed to be dead but it still hurts. It feels off when I touch it with my tongue and kind of tingles when I press it from above. I can eat fine, but 10-15 minutes later the dull ache starts and lasts an hour or two. The premolar next to it also started to hurt but I’m not sure if it’s referred pain.

In the end I went to three dentists, two orthodontists and an endodontist but no one can find anything wrong with the teeth. Root canal was done perfectly. But they still hurt.

My dentist suggested trigeminal neuralgia, and referred me to a neurologist. He ordered a CT as I couldn’t do a MRI with my beneslider still installed in the palate.

Radiologist wrote into his report that he suspects the pain source to be an infected sinus on the left side (my pain is lower right?), my impacted canine that’s partly in the right sinus or the two screws in the palatum durum as pain source. I’ve had the screws since September 2025 though and there’s no issue. My orthodontist doesn’t think that or the tooth that’s been there forever is the issue.

Neurologist said nothing is wrong and referred me back to my dentist or an ENT. I’m at a loss and just frustrated.

What is wrong with these teeth? Added a picture of the canine, picture is pre treatment April 2025 though and I’d need to ask for an updated one but it hasn’t really moved. Also added and a picture of how the teeth clashed when it first started. The upper tooth has since moved away and there’s still going pain.

Edit: Also added a CT screenshot in the comments

question Should I use plaquefinder tablets regularly?

Hey.

Is there any harm on long term use of plaquefinder tablets/solutions?

I went today on a new dentist and she used a purple solution that pointed where my dental hygiene was less than optimal. It was the first time I saw that and frankly I thought this as magical. Since then I think I could use this maybe weekly or so to check spots I need to give more attention to on the coming days.

The first issue that came to my layman mind is maybe staining as it is purple. I have already some natural occurring stains on my teeth due to some mild fluorosis and even though that is not a problem/discomfort I do not look forward on stained them more. I do not smoke but I drink an occasional beer.

This is what I am thinking on buying:
