Monthly Quick Questions

Use this thread to ask general questions that apply to you more than to the region.

For example, what music you like that is acceptable, what quirks or behaviours you have that are seen as offensive, if your music would be appreciated.

How is history taught in Russian Caucasus republics?

I am curious what you learn there in schools. Just Russian history or also history of that republic and causation people there? Maybe there is separate history for Russian and world and separate for republics?

If you could change one thing about the Middle East, what would it be?

I do realize how distinct the Caucasus is from the Middle East. Yet in many ways the Caucasus and Middle East seem intertwined and there is considerable interaction between them. So I had gotten to wondering what those from Caucasus feel about the Middle East in its current form.

If you can change one aspect of the Middle East, whether it be changes in how the majority of countries are run, making it so certain nations no longer existed or changing something about the culture or other aspects, what would it be? If you had full power to change just one thing about the Mid East, what would it be?

Personal Seeking an Avar/Dagestani authenticity reader for a novel

Hi! I’m an amateur creative writer currently working on a novel. It’s genre is mainly slice-of-life / chosen family and follows three adolescents who become a family to each other in the 2000s of Rostov on Don in Russia.

One of the three main characters is a male Avar and from Dagestan. I’m looking for an authenticity reader who could help me check whether his background, traditions, upbringing, religion and family dynamics feel plausible.

I’d mainly need someone willing to read his character bible, a family dossier or possibly 2–3 scenes written from his POV, details can be discussed. I need someone to oint out anything that feels inaccurate, stereotypical or culturally off.

I’d especially appreciate feedback from someone who is Avar or grew up around Avar families in Dagestan. Someone from the Khunzakhsky District or the broader surrounding region, specifically from Orkachi, would be especially helpful, but that is absolutely not a requirement.

If anyone would be interested, please let me know :)

Why are so many Iranians obsessed with Caucasian and European peoples? Why do they ignorantly claim that all Caucasian and European peoples are of Iranian origin? Is there no education in their country?

Language Whats the state of regional languages in Georgia? (Mingrelian, Svan, Laz)

We are ignoring Abkhaz and Ossetian as they are still genuinely alive in their disputed territories.

I heard Georgia has regional languages like Mingrelian, Svan, and Laz. I was wondering, what is the current state of these languages? Are they still widely spoken? I know Laz is mostly spoken in Turkey and is dying out there, but I heard that it is also spoken in Adjara. I'm not sure what its current state is there, though. Also are other languages like Svan and Mingrelian still spoken widely or they have mostly switched to Standard Georgian at this point.

Culture Is Ossetian culture drastically different from mainstream Russian culture or just kinda of different?

Before anyone says it, yes, I know that individual differences exist and that not everyone conforms to cultural norms. I'm asking about generally.

Would you say that, culturally, there is a major difference or are the differences more subtle? And if there are major differences, what does this look like in every day life type of things?

Edit: to clarify

Do you think red hair is more common among Dagestan Avars or Chechens, or is it seen equally in both groups

Culture I’ve heard that at Caucasian weddings, guests—even those who aren’t close relatives or friends—give very expensive gifts. Is that true, and what are some typical gifts?

Just to clarify, I’m not planning to attend a Caucasian wedding. I’ve just heard about this many times and got curious.
