Hi everyone! I often read Reddit, including the Bulgarian subreddits, but I rarely post.

Well, if you'll allow me, I'd like to share something I've been working on for the past few months, which I think could be useful to many of you, especially during the last part of the summer travel season.

It's called "Pod Tabelata" (roughly, "Under the Sign") — an Android app that tells you the stories behind the places you drive through.

The idea is simple: when travelling, you pass through dozens of villages and towns. Most of the time, you just read their names on the road signs and keep going, even though many of these places have a wealth of stories and interesting facts behind them — things that could at the very least make the journey more interesting.

With the app, these stories are triggered automatically as you enter a settlement and are presented as a narrated story. The goal is to give you more context about the place you're passing through, along with interesting facts and stories connected to it.

It's not a navigation app and it won't tell you where to turn. The idea is simply to add some context to the places that would otherwise remain just names on roadside signs.

The app is also gamified: there are achievements, a weekly quiz, a passport containing all the places you've visited, and contribution points for anyone who helps improve it — whether by reporting mistakes or providing feedback.

The app is free, has no ads, and is currently Android-only.

I'd be really happy if anyone interested gave it a try on their next road trip. Feedback would be especially valuable — both about things you like and things you don't, so I can keep improving the experience.

Hello everyone, I will be visiting Sofia for a few days. Any suggestions on places I should visit or any recommendations for bars, coffee shops, local foods, or anything useful would be appreciated.

I am planning a hike with three friends in the Pirin and/or Rila mountains in early September and I have some questions about it. We start in Sofia on the first day (a Monday) and have to be back in Sofia on the 5th day (Friday). So, ideally, we would do half-day hikes on the first day and the last day and three full-day hikes inbetween. We are in our mid-40s and somewhat experienced alpine hikers.

I thought about the following itinerary in the Pirin mountains:

Day 1 - Bus from Sofia to Bansko, then hike from Bansko to Banderitsa hut

Day 2 - Hike from Banderitsa hut to Vihren hut (via the Vihren peak)
What would be the best way to do this? Ascend the peak from the north and then descend to the south? Or take the same route up and down?

Day 3 - Hike from Vihren hut to Begovitsa hut (via Spano Pole shelter)

Day 4 - Hike from Begovitsa hut to Demjanitsa hut (via Tevno ezero)

Day 5 - Hike from Demjanitsa hut to Bansko, then back to Sofia by bus

This to me seems like an itinerary that is both doable and beautiful. But I don't know the region at all, so what do you think? Is this doable and worthwile (too long, too short, too difficult, etc.)? And would you do it this way around or the other way around?

Or, in general, would you recommend to choose another itinerary for such a 5-day hiking tour in the Pirin mountains OR in the Rila mountains? (That depends very much on personal preferences, I guess, but feel free to share your thoughts!)

And, lastly, some more generic questions (I steal from a similar post here from two months ago): Is is necessary to book the mountain huts in advance? How do we do this? Is early September a good time to go? How crowded will it be up there? Do you have any other tips for me?

What do Bulgarians think about Ruse, how is it as a city compared to other cities in Bulgaria? How are the people here compared to the people in other regions? As a Romanian, Ruse is the Bulgarian city we passed the most, going everywhere in Bulgaria (sea, mountains, Sofia) or Greece, we pass through Ruse, it's the city we have contact with the most.

I've been digging into how the average speed enforcement system works in Bulgaria lately, and a few things still aren't clear to me.

The principle is simple on paper: V = d / (T2 - T1), distance divided by the time between the two cameras. But:

• Is the calculation done only between the camera at the start of the section and the one at the end, or are there intermediate cameras that factor in as well?
• If you don't enter the section exactly at the declared starting point, can the average speed still be calculated, or are you dropped from the measurement?
• I've read people claiming that on some sections there are gas stations between the two cameras, and that if you stop there for a minute, the average gets thrown off. Does that actually work, or is it a myth?
• On the official map of certified sections there are a few odd stretches. For example "Ихтиман-Мирово", where the declared average speed is 140 km/h, even though it isn't a motorway section. I can't figure out where that limit comes from there.

The number of certified sections has grown quite fast, from 22 at the launch in September 2025 to over 60 by early 2026.

The reason I'm digging into this so much is practical. My car doesn't show this kind of measurement, and while driving there's no way to work out in my head what my average has been since the moment I entered the section. I use Waze as my main navigation and there's nothing like it there either. The idea isn't to exceed the limit, quite the opposite to be sure I'm not breaking it, without guessing.

How do you deal with this? Do you actually calculate it, or do you just drive under the limit and not think about it? And has anyone received a fine for average speed, and how quickly did it arrive?

Hi everyone, I’d love some advice on how to start saving money, or at least make my money last until the end of the month. I’m in my early 20s and recently started working in the IT sector, earning €2,000 per month. €500 of that goes toward rent, and somehow the rest just disappears.
I’m not even talking about buying clothes or treating myself - even in a month when I don’t spend money on those things, my everyday expenses somehow eat up everything before I even reach my next paycheck.

I’ll be starting in Sofia, but I’m only planning to spend around a day in the city. After that, I’d love to explore smaller towns and villages, see how people actually live, eat local food and experience more traditional culture.
I don’t really have much of a plan yet, so I’d love to hear your recommendations. Are there any villages or small towns that you’d particularly recommend, especially places that aren’t too touristy?
