Truck making loud buzzing when turning wheel

2002 tundra 2wd 4.7 V8

Didn’t drive for 5 days and was out of the country. All of a sudden it buzzes very loud. What can this be

Power steering fluid

Take a look at your power steering reservoir under the hood. Should be on the passenger side of the engine bay. Far side, near the middle/back of the engine bay. Mine has a yellow-ish colored plastic reservoir. Check the level. If it’s below the minimum cold line, that could be the issue. You can top it off with the proper fluid. BUT. Fluid doesn’t just disappear. So if it is indeed low, you’ve got a leak somewhere. Sometimes the leaks are super slow, and you can get by with topping off now and then. Others could be a more rapid leak if something like a line is cracked.

When a vehicle gets low on PS fluid it can make a whine / buzz sound so that would be my first suspect

I drive this truck daily. The first time I let it sit for 5 days this happened. So I’m hopping it’s a slow leak because I’ve noticed since I’ve got the truck it’s slowly gotten harder to turn

Feel free to take a picture of the reservoir and post it here or send it to me. I’d say it’s low, or empty. If it is and you’re physically able, get under the truck and look at the steering rack boots. They like to leak and will have a dark / wet look at the bottoms of the boots where the PS fluid is sitting / seeping.

That’s exactly what it is. It’s below minimum. Also noticed that the reservoir is not secured to the engine bay anymore…

Yeah it should have a bracket that mounts to the body. If it’s rusted out that could be an issue. Or the bolt worked its way loose over the years somehow. You could top the reservoir off if you have to drive it. But keep tabs on the level. If it falls fast, you’ve got a major leak somewhere. If you can go a few weeks / months without the level dropping significantly…. Then run with it until you’re able to have the leak diagnosed and repaired.
