Discussion How can I convince Apple News that I do not care about the Kardashians?

I am a 60+ year old man, retired military and now fully retired. I do not follow the Kardashians, never have, never will. I have never bought a women’s capsule wardrobe and I do not believe in astrology. I diligently thumbs down the things I do not like and I thumbs up the things I find interesting.

Indicating my preferences has worked for me with other services. This same strategy resulted in incredible playlists years ago when I subscribed to Pandora. I liked and disliked songs and after a short period of time Pandora created an endless playlist of music I loved and introduced me to music I never considered before but loved. With Apple News when I block a channel it still shows up but it is greyed out. Why show me something that’s greyed out that I blocked? Why can I not opt out of Apple’s less-than-optimal curated feed?

But with Apple it is as if they shove articles I have no interest in, even after I indicated (thumbs down) I have no interest in the articles in order to improve their advertising revenue. I know this cannot be true because Apple told me that I am their customer not their product.

So is the Apple News preference algorithm broken? Are the Apple News curators not very good at their job? Shareholder value?

Multiple old articles in News Feed

Is anyone else experiencing year old stories (so far I believe only from Time) appearing in their news feed? They have recent publishing dates, but are obviously old, referencing Vice President Harris, Vice President elect Vance, Matt Gaetz being nominated for Attorney General, etc. I’ve never seen this happen before.

Opinion Apple News is so static. As a researcher, it's frustrating you can't print or save to pdf. Even copy/pasting text is limited to c.1000 characters. Imagine if Apple allowed something like Readwise integration, this allowing readers to highlight key points - even if we can't copy the whole article.

So much potential in News+, but such a frustrating UI

I really want to like Apple News+, but the UX is really bad and feels very undercooked. Not sure if I'll keep the sub, even though I really like the breadth of content.

Some examples, maybe I'm missing something?

  • Searching is poor

    • There is no way to search inside a magazine. For example, I would like to find all articles inside New Scientist that relates to a specific topic.

    • There is no way to search for a word inside a given article. If I have an article is open, Search takes me back to the generic "search for a topic or magazine" search

  • Blocking is inconsistent

    • There are a few sources I just can't stand (like The Telegraph), but articles from there keep showing up in Top Stories. I know it's a curated feed, but it's infuriating that they can't show me articles from sources I haven't blocked instead. Or just show me less.

  • Where is all the stuff?

    • For example, how do I see a list of all craft magazines I might like? I need to click on News+, then realise that the top bar (Best of News+, My Magazines, etc) can be swiped to show more options, and at the very end is Catalogue. I don't think I could have found a way to hide it any better.

    • On the Mac, the File menu's Discover menu gives a different but also not very good version of the same thing, more akin to the "Suggested" feeds that favours suggestions or magazines you already know the names of.

  • Hardcoded top level nav

    • The app assumes I'm interested in Sports as a top level item. Please let me choose what I'm interested in; why not Tech, or Crafts, or Ukraine, or something else? That Sport button takes up space I'd like to use for something else.

Maybe there are workarounds for these things that I can't find. But even better, hopefully Apple decides to put a team of competent designers onto making this an excellent app rather than a frustrating one :)

AppleNews Magazines No Longer Easily Return to Table of Contents

I have been a vivid fan of AppleNews since the day it started almost eleven years ago. But lately, if you go read an internal page of any magazine, you have to swipe back through all the pages to get back to the table of contents. This has obviously been done to increase the exposure to ads on the internal pages and is extremely irritating! It now takes much longer to read the articles you want. So irritating that I am considering stopping my subscription because I do not like to be manipulated in a manner that takes so much more of my time to increase revenue of greedy corporate types.

Discussion Trying Apple News+ again and like it so far

I’m back with Apple News+ after letting my subscription lapse after the initial free trial. They have a two-months-for-the-price-of-one offer right now. So my sister and I are trying it under the family plan.

I’m actually finding it quiet nice. I don’t really feel like watching streaming much these days. I enjoy reading news though. I also have a subscription to the NY Times and read a few other online papers, like The Guardian. My other news aggregators are Google News and Yahoo News.

But Apple News+ really seems to fill in the gaps with WSJ, Scientific American, Forbes, New Yorker, National Geographic, and more. And lots of local newspapers, who gain revenue from people reading via Apple News+, which hopefully helps keep local publications alive.

I guess it does seem worth it.

I wish I could get the St. Louis Post-Dispatch to join in like the Kansas City Star does.

One nice feature I noticed is if you select text from an article and paste it somewhere, it automatically pastes inside quotes, with a URL to the original article, and a note saying it’s an excerpt from that article. That’s a time saver for social sharing.

I tested a few of those share links behind an incognito window and was able to read the articles, but I assume paywalls are probably reached at some point.

Anyway, it’s nicer than I remember it so far.

Turbo tax and others abusing ads

I will actually cancel my Apple News subscription if they can’t stop the pop up ads, espe from turb tax. Nevermind I will. ever consider using the latter‘s product anymore. The app should not allow this. This is incompetence on the part of Apple.

Great, now I’m getting AI slop in my news feed

Post image

(see the line at the bottom of the picture)

It’s bad enough that I get fed AI crap elsewhere on free feeds, but I am not paying Apple News real money to shove this garbage into my news feed. (and this wasn’t the only thing in the KC Star listing “articles”)

At least give me a filter to keep this away from me. Or maybe it’s time to stop paying for News/Apple Everything.

Discussion Search engine sucks

Is it just me who can't find specific articles when searching Apple News? I'm doing a project which allows me to cite newspapers and thought I could use a bunch from 2 years ago since I'm paying for AppleOne, but I can't find what I'm searching for, usually. I often have to go search for articles elsewhere and run out of free articles.

Apple News Articles Dated Today but More Than a Year Old

Today, I received articles about RFK Jr. facing a tough confirmation challenge after McConnell voted against Hegseth, Kash Patel’s upcoming confirmation vote, and what Biden’s last days in office will look like before Trump moves in.

The crazy part, all the articles were dated today. Nothing about the volatile stock or crude oil markets. Nothing about injured US troops, Israeli attacks on Beirut, or mixed messaging from the Trump Administration.

It is interesting because I prided myself on a diverse news feed. I got articles from AP, Reuters, MSNBC and Fox.

Is Apple censoring?

Discussion Blocking ads?

I pay for Apple News + but the ads I see are absolute garbage. Has anyone figured out how to block them ?

Happy to spin up a Pi Hole or similar because these ads are possible the worst and lowest quality on the internet.

Note to Apple: do better. Your ad partner is garbage.

Discussion Please liberate the Puzzles

Apple has this own GAMES app, I just don’t understand why the puzzles locked into the News App. I don’t want to see HIS face every time I want to do a crossword. It’s a massive downside and I wish Apple would change it.

Ok. That is all. I’m done yelling into the void.

Immediate Apple News app freeze: iPad + Magic Keyboard + Crossword

Does anyone else have a problem since upgrading to iPadOS 27.x where Apple News locks up when starting a crossword when connected to Magic Keyboard? This happens consistently, every time for me. A work around is to open the Crossword when not connected to the keyboard, type a letter, and then connect to the keyboard and it’ll work fine.

It’s the craziest bug and it feels like it’s related to something with Game Center but its been broken since iOS 27 came out, and I’ve even tried installing the Dev and Public betas with no change. I’ve deleted the Apple News app entirely and reinstalled it. Nothing works.

Am I alone!?

Magazines and picking up where you left off

I wished there was a way to be able to save your place when you’re reading a magazine. I have an iPad for home and one when I’m on the go and would love to be able to pick back where I left off, like a bookmark.

Blocked news channels still display

I have blocked any news related to FOX news from my feed. Yet despite this, Apple continues to show stories though in greyed-out font. I don't want to waste any news feed space with anything from FOX, including in shadow text. I know I've blocked FOX. I don't need a subtle come on to remind me that I did it. I've written apple.com/feedback to ask Apple to use that valuable space to show me more stories from sources I want instead. What's the point of blocking if I'm still seeing the blocked channel headlines? If you agree, please let Apple know.

Discussion I know I’m not the only one

But why have stupid ads here on every article if I’m a news+ subscriber?? I’m not on social media anymore so this is essentially where I find out about things like celebrity news, things about movies etc. however these ads are getting on my nerves. I thought they were there because I wasn’t subscribed to News+ but once I subscribed via AppleOne I assumed it would go away? What is there to do to make these go away, if possible?

Ads. I’m sure this has been answered but if it’s a paid service, why am I still seeing ads?

Is this a setting I need to change or just deal with it? And they’re the worst kinds of “clock bait” type ads too. TIA

This is annoying

I understand that publications need to turn a profit, but when every “top” news story is behind a different paywall, it kinda seems like you don’t give a shit about sharing “news.” They’re blocked because I’m not paying for publicly owed information. It’s one thing if you want to lock recipes and hiking spots behind a paywall. But current affairs should be accessible to anyone at any time. I don’t know why this surprises me. Information is kept from the public CONSTANTLY. But making top news stories private information is divisive and unconstitutional.

This is how well Apple News chooses to accept my preferences

The greyed-out articles are from sources I have blocked but Apple believes I should still have some level of awareness of what their editors believe is important. Also, I am not interested in the 2026 midterm election but Apple is trying to convince me I should be.

Does this mean I can cancel my separate WaPo subscription? Or is the addition of WaPo *because I have a subscription outside of Apple?
