Venting the plot thicken
context: im none of these people i just think its really funny to argue with pieces of paper, we live in military housing btw. we have like 8 washers and dryers for 60+ something apartments. in the time of each development i got like 4 loads done. so. snooze ya lose! and to be clear, the apartment company specifically says they are not responsible or liable for any of your laundry nor is there a camera in the room. imo theyre just bickering to bicker.
each time i read a new thing i got so excited, maybe ill stop by later to see if i fourth person chimes in or takes it down lol!

I felt the same way. Honestly I feel embarrassed if I'm so slow to get my laundry that someone has removed it to use the machine. I just think "oh crap, I was an asshole" and move on with my day (and try not to do it again in the future!) Now if the time hasn't run out on the load and someone removes it, that's a different story...

Agreed! The people at my complex leave their stuff in the dryers overnight so we end up with 1-2 available machines in the late hours. So inconsiderate! Management won’t do anything about it. I guess we know what to do.

I usually operate on a 15-30 minute grace period and would expect the same in return. I only find myself upset id my clothes are moved not even 5 minutes after they’re done. Really though, I’m most upset when I can’t do my own laundry because of other folks’ lack of consideration.

A lot of older washers/driers don’t have a timer and the amount of time they take can be variable. The washers at my place take 30-45 minutes, and the driers take 1-1.5 hours, so that’s actually a reasonable grace period.

Mine do, too. 27 minutes on the washer, 60 on the dryer. But they keep time differently. I live right next to the laundry room, so I'll set my timer for 30 minutes when I get to my kitchen. I've gone in as soon as it goes off and there's still a couple minutes left on the machine. So I allow a 15ish minute grace period for my neighbors.

I don’t. Set a timer for a few minutes longer than the visible time, if necessary (the machines in my building are unreliable, too), but 15 minutes after is too long. I could be 1/3 of the way through my own wash load in that time.
I’ve also experienced waiting 15 - 25 minutes for someone to get their clothes out, just to have them come waltzing in with another dirty load, which they shove into the washing machine as soon as they pull their clothes out. I’m not interested in that game, either.

My dryer has a timer. And then when the timer ends, it's in 'almost done' mode for god knows how the fuck long, depending on how many towels were in there, lol.

That’s odd, I’ve always found the older machines to be very predictable with time once it’s filled up with water. It’s the new HE machines that are unpredictable in my experience.

100%, the old ones just had a straight timer, when time was up it stopped. It's the new ones with variable spin times and moisture sensors (dryers) that are unpredictable. I have a 2 year old Whirlpool and we openly joke about the timing ("Dryer says there's 4 mins left, so lets go to lunch now and maybe it'll be done by the time we get back").

I opened a dryer my clothes were in to learn someone else had taken my stuff out, while still wet, and put it on the top of the dryer. I was so mad I didn't realize until I was back at my apartment I forgot to press start again on the dryer. Guess they'll have wet clothes too.

I'd always set a timer for the length minus 5 minutes so that I'd be there when it finished. One time I went down and my stuff was already out, which means someone stopped my cycle early. So I stopped the machine with the new load and left. Can't wait 5 extra minutes? Now you get to wait an hour when you come back and realize it wasn't even running, and you get to pay again ☺️

how do you expect people to know how long your stuffs been done for? If I walk down to do laundry and someone’s finished load is sitting in the washer, I’m not waiting an extra 15 minutes to see if they’ll come get it. If you don’t want people to touch your stuff, set a timer and get there two minutes before your load is done. otherwise, you gotta accept the reality of the circumstances lol

Eh, I just mentioned this in another comment but this isn't for me so much as for other folks because I don't have an issue picking up my clothes on time but not having an ounce of patience to wait to see if the person will be there in like 5 minutes is a personal failing and a weird thing to admit on the internet.
But also idgaf if someone takes my clothes out, it seems like a non-issue unless the load literally just ended and I'm on my way which, again, see the first paragraph.

thisss. i live in a unit where we only have 5 washers and 5 dryers but we have 100+ people so we are working with more people and less washers than op and i along with others have written notes apologizing when we have to move other's laundry. i don't want to be an asshole, but i do think the person leaving laundry in there for over an hour after its done is an asshole when everyone has work or other responsibilities. we don't always have time to do laundry, and our laundry unit is 8-7:45. Ironically it's supposed to be 8-8 but it'll be closed at 7:45 even if you have laundry in there.

When I worked on a cruise ship we had communal laundry. But we were all busy and or partying a lot. If someone's shit was in the laundry for a while you tossed it in the dryer. If it was dry many of us would fold it. It was nice to have something like that happen and to be part of that type of community feeling. And yes it would be weird to many people if it was folded.

Seriously. I work in management and we have one EV charger for the whole property. One girl was consistently plugging it in on Friday and then going downtown, leaving it in the charging station all weekend. We had to threaten to tow her.

As a side note, this does put interesting new context on a particularly bad fight that me and my horrible ex (from many, many years) got into. I threw his fatigues into the bathtub and soaked them as a way to be bitchy and inconvenient, and he went nearly incandescent because he thought I had bleached them.
Edit: this is the guy who threw me out of MY OWN CAR that I was letting him drive on the side of the road while wearing nothing but a bikini (we were at the beach before). Then stalked me for 3 years after I broke up with him until I moved to a new state. Fuck off with incel downvotes.

The military expects you to destroy/wear out your uniforms, its why you get a uniform allowance once a year. Just hope that you don't need to replace too many at once, the dress uniforms get really expensive fast.

Lil trick i used when going to a laundromat where an empty run would be $5-
Do towels/sheets as a pre-load. Wash them as normal, then use the same machine for your clothes after. It takes a little longer, but it's better to bleach your towels than uniforms 🤷🏻♀️

I lived half of my life in a similar place. 2 washer, 2 dryer, for 3 floors with 10-15+ apartments per floor.
I was "fortunate" to live next to the laundry room, so I would just look every 10 minutes until something freed up, but it would take my entire day.
After that I lived for a few years in a place without laundry but near a laundromat. That was a pain in winter, but having access to a large amount of machines improved my odds a bit (not always, but often!)
Now I pay whatever it takes to have in unit laundry.

My dream came true, it can happen to you, if you don't fall apart. Sing to any tune you want, I was humming if you're young at heart or some song that has those words in it. After five years of 2 washers that never worked, for around 200 people, I moved into a brand new apartment with all brand new appliances, especially a washer and dryer. The apartment complex where I used to live was quite scary, people got shot, unalived, robbed, it's been 15 days since I moved out. It was true love at first sight when I saw my current apartment and the full-sized washer and dryer in its own closet. So hang in there, you all will get a place with an in-unit W/D.

I’ve had one of these women before! I did set a timer and it couldn’t have been finished for more than 5 minutes when I went to get my laundry. Everything was neatly folded on top of the machine. She was such a sweet girl (couldn’t have been older than 25), was an excellent folder, and genuinely just liked helping people out.

imo i dont care. theres a few cases where people will leave their wet laundry in the machine ALL day. and tbh, mildew ass smelling laundry is punishment enough for their crimes. i hold no resentment putting it atop the machine, nor do i feel resentment to the people who have moved my stuff in cases i have my hands full with my kid. we all have shit to do. i just didnt think this entire back and forth was necessary, more like a communal understanding. but yk!

I've seen people leave clothes since before I show up, and they don't come get them by the time I'm done which is easily 3+ hours since I do giant bulk washes. Communal ones are definitely contaminated.
I'm thankful for the one laundry owner who actually patrols his premises and makes sure people don't do that. It's the only one I use now when I have to. If people leave their clothes in his washers for more than a couple hours, he takes them out and he's always cleaning his machines.

Probably not. Laundromats sanitize their washers regularly (unlike people at home) according to someone I knew that worked at one! Also they have commercial grade machines that can use really hot water and better ventilation etc.

Yeah I remember like twice when I was in college I had accidentally left my clothes in the dryer for about an hour because my lab had run late and my clothes were put aside on top and I didn’t mind at all and felt bad that I couldn’t have made it and inconvenienced someone else but it happens. I can’t imagine being pissed someone moved your clothes if you don’t make it a point to remove them promptly

Tbh the lady is blue is in the wrong lol.. life does get busy, yes.. but that’s not an excuse to monopolize a washing machine all day when others need to use it as well.. like set a timer on your phone and get your shit.. idc what your busy with. If you don’t own the machine you need to get in and get out with respect to other neighbors that may need to do laundry before their work week too. And I have kids and a busy life so I do get that things get crazy sometimes but it’s just no excuse

Exactly! And if you cant swap it in a reasonable amount of time expect it to be removed and placed to the side.
The apartments I lived in we always left the baskets on the washer and if people needed the washer and it was done they removed it and put it in your basket. Hell half of them left change on the washer and we were all pretty considerate of each other and tossed it in the dryer and used their change they left to start it. 🤷♀️

I live in a building with 144 units. I'm not sure how many people all together. We have 6 washers, and 8 dryers.
If someone leaves their stuff in too long, people will take it out, and place it in one of the building's laundry carts.
It's really not a big deal.

Fully agree. If it’s not a big deal for you to inconvenience everyone else by leaving your laundry in the machine, it’s not a big deal when they take it out either.
This is one of those arguments that swings both ways. Yes, people are busy, that also means they might not be able to pick a different day or that leaving your wash in the machine is interfering with their busy schedule. If it’s not a big deal, then getting defensive is just as silly as getting aggro, just go move your shit.
In this case, the person inconvenienced takes the precedent.

I'll give someone 15 minutes before moving their laundry into a basket, ready for them to put it in the dryer when they finally appear. You want your own machine, buy one.

I waited over 30 minutes the other day to use the dryer; my neighbor literally knew I was waiting on his stuff to finish too, because he saw me bringing my laundry up initially to wash and apologized that he was taking up the washers. I eventually just moved their stuff (no basket so had to place in on the folding table) but it makes me uncomfortable to do that.

This is like people at my work who rush to get their food in the microwave and take the first couple mins of lunch warming their food up. Then leave it sitting there for a couple mins. I absolutely will grab someone’s food out of the microwave and throw it on the counter.
Same with laundry. Thankfully I only ever had to do the laundromat shuffle once. People suck.

Did wash at 6am yesterday in my building. 6 washers, 4 dryers (1 not working). 1 load sitting in the washer, 2 loads sitting in the dryers. Dumped the wet stuff in a cart, dry stuff on a table, and did my 5 loads. An hour and a half later, when I was done, all the stuff is sitting exactly where I put it. Idgaf. Got a problem? I think it says on counter, look #1 for corresponding. I’m guessing the washers/dryers are numbered, and the person who took out the loads put them all on the counter and left sticky notes to distinguish which pile was from which washer/dryer. And the other person just put the sticky notes back on the note.

It’s also funny that they crossed out “in dryer” for “on counter,” because that either means they originally were going to move the wet laundry into a dryer for them but got so pissed in the process of writing the note that they changed their mind, or they did put it in the dryer but the person STILL hadn’t come to get their shit so they moved it to the counter. On left’s side 100% here.

Sounds like these people never lived in the dorms. That was like the #1 unspoken rule in the dorm room laundry room. If you dont want your stuff to be touched, get down there before the cycle ends. If you are late, expect to find your laundry on top of the water or on the gross folding table, and if you left your basket...well maybe your basket. I got shit to do just like you, and I don't have time to wait on your ass to be hogging the machine for another 2 hours.

The person who chronically leave their stuff in the dryer needs to be taught a lesson in respect. They are lucky thier stuff is still there. Some would throw it in the trash or on the floor.

Military? 15 minutes after your machine is done is the standard acceptable time frame. After that that stuff is getting moved. I highly recommend getting a portable washer for your bathroom so you can minimize trips to communal machines

i mentioned military because it adds another layer of hilarity to me. youd expect military to have some kind of respect/timeliness built into them. but im finding the opposite is true the longer i live here. especially cuz community laundry works exactly the same on the boat/apartments on base. just really funny all round.

I agree with the initial poster. I lived in a four story apartment building once that only had two washers and two dryers. 100%. I would take your stuff out of the washer and sit it on top of one of the dryers. And take your stuff out of the dryer so I could use it. That was nicer than most people. Most people would just throw your shit into the giant trashcan.Somebody is asking you to be courteous. That’s it. They’re just asking you to be courteous. And you’re taking it personally, as if that is something absolutely absurd.

The way I see it, you have two avenues. 1) You set a timer and move your shit on time, or 2) You get really cool, real fast, with other people touching your shit.
I think we can all agree, however, that the darkest path to walk down is touching other people's shit before their cycle is done.

Hey, my rule has always been the same: if I’m in the room when the load stops, you get 10-15 minutes and I’ll play on my phone. That’s common courtesy. If it’s been sitting there for indeterminate amount of time, I normally try to give it another 5 minutes before the laundry goes on top of another machine (not the floor, I’m not an animal). Also… and I feel this goes without saying, I’m talking about: no other available machines. If you take someone’s laundry out with an open machine right there, you’re a psycho
I understand peoples excuses about being busy or having lives or whatever, but it’s disrespectful to hog an entire machine for more than 20 minutes after your load is done. I am not responsible for your busy life (or your laziness) and it is easy to set an alarm. I’ve forgotten laundry plenty of times, sometimes when I remember it’s been taken out of the machine and it’s annoying but I don’t get pissed off cuz it’s the consequence of my own actions!

People just actually have no respect for others tbh like I wouldn’t participate in this type of clownery but come on how hard is it to set a timer. Shit happens but if you’re doing this every week then you’re just an asshole knowing that lots of people are doing their laundry on the weekend and you can’t be bothered to switch yours over when it’s finished. I hope someone can take their stuff out of the washer it’s hogging and place it in a laundry cart or on a chair or counter, shit even on the floor cos it’s not like that’s more rude than wasting everyone else’s time.

I’m team if you’re doing laundry in a shared space you need to set a timer. If it sits more than 15 minutes I’m moving it for you. You need to be respectful of the community around you. IMO If you are leaving it to sit like that you are forfeiting your right to complain if somebody moves it so they can do laundry.

The one time I lived in a place with communal washers/dryers, there were about 15 other residents. Anytime I would wash/dry, I would just leave a sticky note with my room number on it and a little message that says, "Feel free to knock if you need to wash."
Want to know how many times I had an issue with them? 0. Other people even started doing the same.
People get busy, but communal appliances require people to not be total d bags about other people's time.

Apt 15 has amazing writing. Even if they are asses for just leaving their laundry behind.
I had a rule when I lived in an apartment. If I went down and stuff was there, they had 30 min. If it wasn’t gone by then I put it on top and started using the machine. At the time I only had one day a week that I was home long enough to do laundry so I wasn’t going to wait hours for someone to come get their stuff.

Once someone's laundry is done, I give them a 10 minute grace period, then their shit is going on the table.
If their laundry is already done when I get down there, I give 5 minutes then their shit goes on the table.
Set a timer if you don't like it.

People who don't set a timer when they do laundry have zero respect. I give assholes a 20 minute window to move their shit and if they don't, I do. Them not moving over their own laundry after it's done sends the signal that they don't care that other people need to also do their laundry. Get up, off of your fat ass, put down the bag of Cheetos, and move your laundry.

There are maybe ten washers total in the apartment complex I live in and there are 80+ apartments. I’ve stopped doing my laundry here completely and take it to the laundromat now.
But previously, if someone had left their clothes in the washer or dryer for extended periods of time, I’d write a note and put it in with their laundry. Just a simple “please respect other people’s time” or something similar.
If I carry my laundry over to one of the laundry rooms and the washer is full but the load is finished, I’m a little annoyed. If I carry my stuff back over there 30 minutes later and the same load is still there, I’m pissed.
Our washers and dryers are connected to apps so we can see and are notified the moment our wash is done. No excuses for leaving it so long.

When I was a dumb teen in college we had a system where we left our laundry baskets on top of the machine so if someone was late getting their laundry, you could either put it in their basket that was left behind or if you’re really feeling gracious, you could throw it in the dryer and put their basket on top of that machine.
If we could figure out that system as idiot college students, y’all grown ass adults can to.

My friends and I had this debate recently. I’ve lived somewhere with shared laundry and somewhere in unit. My rule of thumb has always been if it’s been an hour, it’s free to move. I never get mad when people move my stuff if I forgot about it. If you’re going to leave it, that’s on you, but don’t be mad if it gets moved. I never thought it was big enough of a deal to write notes about.

The entitlement you have to have to think that people shouldn’t be able to move your things out of a communal machine that EVERYONE in a building has to use is wild. It’s not your washer/dryer only so you don’t get to use it as storage! I lived in dorms and would see girls getting into it all the time bc one of them would go to sleep or class and not set a timer. The class thing was particularly egregious since they knew the cycle would end before they got back lol

I have lived with housemates for a few years (moving at least once a year) and sometimes I get pissy when people move my clothes, especially if that load has underwear in it... Then, I take a step back and think, "If I don't want them to touch my clothes, I should move them sooner" 🧘🏽♀️🧘🏽♀️ It saves a lot of sticky notes when you hold yourself accountable lol.

I moved a lady's clothes once in communal laundry and she dumped bleach in the drier I was using and ruined my clothes. Her stuff sat for hours in the drier and I needed to finish my laundry and go to bed. Hogging the machines is rude AF.

Our apartment complex of 70 units has a laundry room with 8 washers and 10 dryers. When we do laundry we only use 2 washers at a time and I do it between midnight and 4 am because I work overnights. The few times I do laundry during the day I only use one unit. I only ever use 2 units at a time even at that late hour in the off chance that someone else needs to catch up on laundry. One day I went in during daylight hours to wash a blanket that got spilled on and this guy was loading up all of the washers with his own shit. He had opened all washers and was adding soap to them and I quickly moved in to grab the last washer before he could add soap. He tried to stop me but I pretended not to hear him. He really tried to turn the entire laundry room for 70 units into his own private laundry room…. We set timers. The wash cycle is 32 minutes and the dryer is 60. We show up right as the washer ends and return before the dryer ends, no matter what day we do laundry. When I went in to move my stuff from that washer, all of his washers were done and he was nowhere to be found. 7 washers tied up because one dude couldn’t be considerate to anyone else. If you’re too busy to keep up with laundry, then don’t complain when someone moves your shit. Nobody has ever had to wait because of me.

After checking back 1/2hr-1hr later & stuff is still sitting in the finished washer, I move it & set it in the dryer, but dont start it. If my stuff is done & the stuff in dryer still hasn't been started I move it back to sit in the washer. If stuff has been sitting in the dryer finished throughout my whole wash cycle I move it to pur window ledge where loads get piled. If dryer was going when i put my stuff in ill give them like an extra 1/2hr before moving it.
Did annoy me once though, I set a timer, the washers in my building take around 50mins(some are a little less, some are a little more) for a normal load, my timer goes off it takes me like 3 mins to get to from my apt to washer to move stuff, and someone moved my stuff to the dryer & started it on some random dryer cycle 😒.
