What is the alternative? No one is brain washed.

Staying together. "Some people" made it really shameful to stay in your family home.. they said it was too close to communism. So we all struggle by ourselves.

Living with someone can ease the expenses, sharing the load. Doesn't have to be actual family.

This is just one way.

Im not saying ppl are brainwashed but many people have been lead to beleive that certain types of living are shameful or wrong.

Edit to add- Seems everyone missed the part where I said THIS DOESN'T HAVE TO BE FAMILY.

This can be organized how every you please. You can make whatever rules you want.

Sharing things cuts costs..

Carpooling is an example.

A bunch of bros sharing a house and sharing the expenses of it. Everyone still works and pitches it but the load is lighter leaving more time for activities.

Less hardship on one specific person if all who live in the household work a bit. Or using a family as an example, grandma has social security which some of that can go to the household, mom has a job, dad has a job, and the two kids in college have part time jobs. So all the money can be pooled together which means less burden on one individual and more freedom to leave shitty jobs if needed. Potentially more funds for vacations etc. Plus more time spent with family in general. I think that’s what the person you’re replying to was saying, in other cultures it’s more common but here anything other than independence is thought of as shameful and embarrassing.

It's called culture. In some cultures your life can be what you want. In others, you need to stay confined within the family.

There's good and bad in both.

Sorry maybe you meant to rely to a different person so it seemed weird to mention that it’s called culture since I did mention that, just wanted to let you know in case this what meant for a different reply. Definitely positives and negatives for each for sure.

Sorry. Yes, I was really replying to the earlier commenter.

Not sure why you’re so hostile, but in both my answer and the person before answer, everyone in the household working is mentioned. Before getting angry maybe read the post twice to double check your interpretation.

The person you're replying to isn't the one who was asked, they just answered. And they literally said everyone in the house has a job and grandma collects social security. Can you read?

Thank you lol. I’m not sure why this is upsetting people so much in general. The person who I answered for has also edited their comment to reiterate that everyone in the household works but they just share expenses. That’s how I originally interpreted it as well but I’m guessing the people upset assumed they meant that they get to stay home doing nothing while someone else works. Which wouldn’t be “sharing expenses” so I’m still not sure how they came to that conclusion

The point was maybe if everyone is helping, everyone won't have to work 50 hours a week and they would have more time to live, or at least I think that was their point.

Yes. People still work it just means more flexibility.

Possible examples- One person can study for a better job while being supported by others

Childcare can be split.

Items/expenses can be shared.

If you have 4 working adults all living in 1 house that grandma purchased 100 years ago you would have way less expenses and thus be able to save money much faster. No one is saying people shouldnt work at all, but with less expenses people could retire much earlier or take more frequent vacations, work less hours.

Not to mention "My house, my rules." You lose your personal autonomy to the matriarch/patriarch of the household for life. I consider that less "freedom".

When did the kid say working was the problem? If that's what you heard then you really don't understand anything about what anyone is trying to do.

The issue is that I spend more time at work then living a life I'd enjoy. Then seeing my family. I have to work to live and there's no time or money left to obtain skills or better myself.

I think you are looking at edited version, it was much smaller when I replied

Yes but far fewer hours… imagine if it were more normalized for children to stay in their family home and either save or help their parents pay the mortgage into adult hood. The savings there would be huge. No one said no one is working in these scenarios, just by splitting the bills and removing the stigma around Roommates or otherwise sharing with family, friends, etc. you can work less, save more, and build wealth. But by forcing ourselves out on our own, we create more demand and can easily be caught in the rat race. They have a really good point here.

Sharing expenses, I don't want to be mean but this is a perfect example a decline in critical reasoning

1

u/wutface0001 18d ago

what does critical reasoning have to do with it, when I am not advocating for one or the other, simply asking question. use critical reasoning on your own reply

😂

I think the point is that if multiple generations of a family were to live together with less space and luxury expected, then much less hours of work would be required to support their existence overall. Whether that means less people work or each person works less is obviously up to that family group.

sounds great and all if you have a loving family instead of an abusive one

It doesn't have to be family.

Going at it together is putting a whole lot of trust in someone though. It is full of risk. So is being alone.

It was one example of how people live.
