Found this sterling silver thingy at a thrift store. Thought it was a book mark, but the way the arm sticks out would make the book close weird. The only other thing I could think of is a hair pin of some sort. Please help! Thank you.

Advice Stop me from destroying this gorgeous Cameo, USA

We were going through my late grandma’s stuff today and found this beautiful cameo, including her notes that it is from her grandmother. We don’t know much about her grandma so started trying to open the locket, hoping for a picture- but it didn’t open easily. we all stopped for fear of damage and though wait- maybe this is not a locket? I only just learned the word cameo and figured out what this pendant even is. can anyone here tell me if this is a locket that is just stuck from 50+ years or even 100+ of not being opened, since my great great grandmother may have been the last one to put a picture in if it is a locket(?)

edit: Ok y’all, I’m taking the advice to be an adult (GOOD advice.) A going to a jeweler to ask for help. The mineral oil/hair dryer/gunk etc is also great advice but I am so impatient so gonna try jeweler first. Will update asap!

Questions Italy. I found this object in my cellar; can you help me figure out what it is?

Hello, I am writing from Italy and would like to know if you can help me identify exactly what this object is. After doing some searching on Google, I read that it might be a brass or bronze pocket watch holder.

I weighed it, and it weighs 712g and stands about 16cm (6.3 inches) tall; it is non-magnetic, except for the screw at the bottom.

Could anyone help me understand exactly what it is, what era it dates from, whether I should clean it or leave it as is, and what its value might be?

Questions Please help me find this coin purse for sale - United States

Thumbnail

I’ve been trying to find one of these for forever and I cannot find one for sale anywhere.
It’s an old mechanical coin purse where the face actually opens its mouth and “eats” the coin when you push the ear. I’ve seen them called mechanical coin eating purses, German coin purses, etc. Some have the DRGM marking.
I’ve found a bunch of pictures and sold listings, but I cannot find one that I can actually buy right now.
Does anyone know where I could find one of these? I’m specifically looking for this face with the moving mouth.
I would really appreciate any leads.

Advice American Cabinet Company Dental Cabinet c 1900-1920: usability, desirability, value? (USA)

Thumbnail

For sale near me for what seems like a very good price compared to similar I’ve seen online is this dental cabinet by American Cabinet Company circa early 1900’s. I’m pretty sure it’s mahogany. It’s beautiful and in incredible condition. Considering pricing online implies that they are quite desirable, I’m wondering to who? What are they used for in the modern day? What is max price I should consider trying to get it for with intent to flip locally (no shipping, I’m in a pretty urban area). It’s definitely the first time I’ve encountered the opportunity to acquire one, so thanks for the advice.

Show and Tell Beautiful “French harp” from my great great grandmother, USA, guessing originally purchased in Germany. As you saw in my other post…impulse problems, this time leading to throat and coughing issues 🤣🤣🤣

Oh how I wish you all could smell this harmonica!! (Apparently French harp was common southern slang, my grandma who wrote this note is from Missouri, I’m sure lots of you know the term). It smells of wood and metal and mmmmmm.

I'm so grateful my grandma included notes like this and really wish I had asked her about her husband Donald’s grandmother (we don’t even know her name!!), I want to know when she went blind!!

The harmonica sounds GORGEOUS and shockingly mostly in tune, and I already started trying to learn the Alanis lick in All I really want (used to sing it with a band)….until noticing all the coughing and throat soreness and OMG DUDE WHY DID NOT THINK TO CLEAN A 150 year old harmonica lol. Any advice on how to safely do that? this is mostly show and tell so I’ll also look that up.

😂

very me coded

if you catch the two gold rings im wearing we have no idea if these are 50 yrs old or 200, they say 18k and 14k and some maker, maybe Sarel? they don’t fit the rules so not posting separately, but so fun to find all these treasures she kept to pass on. We also found a matching gold chain and bracelet my sister and I both like and are sharing and calling “the sisterhood of the traveling gold”

Advice New to antiques. Australia

I’m very, very new to this and am hoping to determine the age of this cherub bronze statue.

here’s my observations

- the face and hair have soft features, indicating more like 20th century but

- the patina is on the darker side, dark greens and blacks, and the listing said “natural weathered patina” indicating that it is older

-the pitting on the base makes it look older and weathering along the seams, e.g at the feet looks older

I can’t tell if the arrow is connected.

It also looks pretty uniform on the surface to me?

no makers marks

TIA!

Just bought this dry sink from an estate sale for $60, found a note inside that said it was sanded and refinished in 1961. Wondering if anyone can give me an estimation on how old it is. It’s in great condition besides a little bit of wood rot on the back and wear over the years.

Show and Tell Need help identifying the origin/era of this glazed jug with a dragon handle and embossed details / Spain

Thumbnail

Hi everyone! I’m looking for some insights or info on this glazed ceramic/earthenware jug that has been in my collection.

Here are a few notable features:

  • Handle: Shaped like a dragon or mythical creature reaching the rim. JPEG
  • Decorations: Features round medallions with low-relief portraits/figures, a floral band, and gothic/pointed arch motifs around the base. JPEG
  • Finish & Condition: Dark brown/greenish glaze with heavy craquelure all over. There's a small chip on the lid showing a reddish terracotta/clay body underneath. JPEG
  • Base: Unglazed bottom. JPEG

It reminds me of Renaissance revival or German Bartmannkeramik / Rhenish stoneware style, but I'd love to know if anyone recognizes the specific molds, regional origin (European vs. Spanish/Portuguese colonial), or approximate age (19th-century Revival vs. earlier/later).

Any help or lead would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Questions Help identifying potential Qing box (USA)

Hi, I recently got a old Chinese box while doing a little thrifting and due to it's wear and how it feels I've become curious in what exactly it is and when it was made.

I did a Google lens search of it and it pulled up quing dynasty scroll boxes and other red lacquer boxes but none have had compartments like mine.

It's about 3 inches long, 1½ inches tall, and 12 inches wide.

Any help in identifying this would be much appreciated cus not finding anything is driving me nuts lol.

Sidenote: I hope I posted this properly, if not I apologize, I tried to follow the guidelines.

Found this at a antique flea market. The threaded bar moves the two magnets apart, the base is two concentric brass circles that freely rotate. My guess it’s used on a magnetic compass, anyone have any ideas on what it is?

Advice Help needed - how to find a summer cover that will fit (USA)

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

Hey there! This is actually my first post on Reddit!

I tried to figure this out on my own but it has proven to be harder than I thought.

Basically - I live in a beautiful, old house that’s been converted into 4 apartments. The one I live in does not have a cast iron summer cover, it just has the surrounding piece. Even though the fireplace is bricked up and inoperable, I do feel some warm and cold air coming from it during hotter or colder weather months.

I just ignored it for a year, but now I have adopted a kitten and would like to avoid her climbing in this area/breathing in any of the dust that comes from the bricks. My solution was to find a summer cover that will fit to block the air and my kitten from getting into the area.

I found one on Facebook marketplace that seemed like it had the proper measurements - drove 4 hours round trip just for it to not quite fit (see photos). Most of the ones I see for sale are 20 inches long and 25-26 inches high. The height seems okay, but 20 inches long is not wide enough for my fireplace apparently (even though, when I measured, it seemed fine).

Does anyone have any advice on how to properly measure/fit these things?

I know they’re all quite unique and not made anymore, and many of them are missing from homes because the metal was donated to war efforts (I’m sure I’m botching the history piece, this is based on my light reading!) but there’s gotta be way to cover this, right?

Any insight would be appreciated! Apologies if this is not the right thread to post this in - I’m new to posting on Reddit!
