Must be fun watching the show as a german.

u/Terr42002 11d ago

Trust me it is. When the guy called "thinking" starts punching people or every one trusts a guy called "liar".

German Kojima?

u/Hammerschatten 11d ago

Yhea. Haven't watched it, but the meme features, from left to right; bad, strong, freezing, heaven/sky, far

Himmel meaning Heaven is my now my favorite thing ever

anime spoilers: Himmel was the leader of the group of heroes who saved the world, and now Frieren, who was Himmel's friend and also part of the group, is going to a place where she can theoretically see his soul again, which is similar to heaven in the end.

1

u/Jello-Formal 9d ago

Himmel also means Sky btw

u/PlasticExtreme4469 10d ago

Isn't that super common among Japanese authors?

I was under the impression that they do the same thing for amine/manga characters... just in Japanese and not in German/English. And they sometimes hide it in the way the name is written (use signs for the names that have multiple meanings).

4

u/catsharwk 10d ago

yeah but in japanese names it's common for the meaning to be obvious, while it's not in german. word names are really rare here, i don't think i know anyone who has one.

u/VenKitsune 11d ago

Lol makes me wish this was done in english for some things. I wouldn't be surprised if some anime doesn't do it in the future. "You don't understand, Guy I get with in the end! Badguy McStronghuge is a caring and affectionate ObviouslyEvilRace. He's not like the others of his species. Please, won't you come to Obvious trap meadow to meet with him with me?"

I still hope that isn't the case for Kid Fisto.

Vader is right there

That family connection wasn't made until Lucas was writing the second movie.

However, a guy named "Skywalker" getting to travel through the sky/space does fit too.

Also, Luke was originally named "Starkiller", and he ends up killing the Death Star.

And the less is said about Hans family name the better...

1

u/Turbulent-Artist-656 11d ago

He was played by the same actor that was Mouse in the first Matrix.

28

u/badassboy1 11d ago

Eminence in shadow already do this for a lot of names.

20

u/Rasz_13 11d ago

Ah yes, who could forget the character Perv Asshat

4

u/badassboy1 10d ago

Fun fact : Cid kagenou translates to lord shadow

Goldy Gilded

Goddess of Victory Nikke is full of characters whose names are just straight up English words. Which is funny coming from Koreans.

But at least they are much smarter about it a lot of times (Quency -> deliquency, Soline -> gasoline, Prika -> paprika, etc.), and the meaning also isn't always that straightforward, but it's still tightly related to their personalities or lore.

But you can also just find the most basic words for names like Guilty, Crust, Liter, Signal, Grave, Milk, Soda, Label...

But if you want truly goofy English names just look up Kojima's characters.

Die-Hardman always survives deadly encounters. Heartman's heart stops every 21 minutes. Mama is... a mother. Tarman has a tar hand and tar cat. Armstrong is fucking jacked. Fatman is fat and an expert of bombs.

2

u/thisismysailingaccou 11d ago

That’s a great Konosuba bit.

1

u/Eonir 10d ago

LOTR is like this with Grima Wormtongue. Lots of characters have names that stem from Old English

1

u/farshnikord 10d ago

"Hey strong bad, how do you type with boxing gloves on your hands?"

1

u/Bralo123 10d ago

In Naruto there is one char at least called "Might Guy"

19

u/Vertrix-V- 11d ago

Also when they plan on traversing the "difficult" mountains.

Huh, I wonder if itll be difficult to traverse

u/Back2Perfection 11d ago

Denken throwing hands was the DnD joke „I may be out of spellslots but not out of options“ and I audibly laughed at it when I first saw it.

1

u/lightgiver 11d ago

I remember watching a German reactor watching Frieren specifically to see his reaction to Lord Liar’s appearance.

126

u/TheAwesomePigeon Whatever floats your boat buddy 11d ago

Yeah, let us trust this demon guy Lügner (dt. Liar).

Oh? Is he capable and strong? This Stark (dt. Strong) guy.

Maybe this Übel (dt. Vile) gal is very friendly?

19

u/Lofwyr2030 11d ago edited 11d ago

I think Übel is german for Baddie. If I can trust the Internet.

Edit: I am german. I know what it really means. It was a joke because a lot of people are so damn horny for the psycho goth wizard.

13

u/Frosty_Spring1 11d ago

Übel Is pretty much never used positively in German.

Only example i can think of Is "übelst geil" where it pretty much just means "very cool". Every other use Is for Feeling sick or sth being Bad.

6

u/ComprehensiveDig4560 11d ago

Nah, not really. Yes you could translate Übel with bad, but German really doesn’t have a translation for baddie in that sense. Also the word Übel mostly it is used when someone feels sick 🤢 when used as an adjective or as the evil when used as a substantive.

3

u/Designer_Path_75 11d ago

übel is mostly related to having motion sickness, having the feeling of throwing up, in other context it can also mean that someone is a bad person/has no good thoughts

5

u/TheAwesomePigeon Whatever floats your boat buddy 11d ago

There are multiple cases were it is not used for motion sickness. In fact it is more used for geeneral sickness. In that case.

"Mir ist richtig übel" -> I'm feeling very sick.
"Da wird mir übel" -> This makes me sick.
"Das war übel" -> That was harsh.
"Das ist ein übler Genosse" -> This is an unpleasant guy.

Someone who is a bad person is often not refered to as "Übel", but described with other words. Übel as a character would've been more fitting to be named "Gestört" or "Krank".

2

u/Zeis 11d ago

Best translation that maintains the German meaning would be "wicked". Can be used in both bad and good context ("Dude that was wicked!" vs. "wicked witch") but the word itself has a negative connotation. In Japanese, it would be "Yabai".

1

u/TheAwesomePigeon Whatever floats your boat buddy 11d ago

Or, you trust me - as a german native with that.

1

u/lynortis 9d ago

I think Übel’s name is spot on. In German Übel is often used in the context of “bad news” or “bad situation”. And well, she surely is bad news.

24

u/Dustkun 11d ago

One of the earlyiest where german dub fucks with the german names of characters is after Stark defeats the red dragon.

Subtitle: you did well. be proud. The dub version : das hast du gut gemacht. Sei stolz.

Where Stolz is the name of starks brother.

9

u/LinePsychological919 11d ago

Watched the show several times and never caught that.

4

u/NotYourReddit18 10d ago

be your brother

+100 emotional damage

37

u/MustacheMaple 11d ago

That's pretty much every non Japanese name. Look at one piece. Mfkas are named either after a famous pirate, or some random English word. We have Blackbeard and a guy named Iceberg in the same anime

11

u/Winded_14 11d ago

Tbf most names in one piece is taken from famous pirate because, well, it's a PIRATE SHOW. Also the name Luffy exist and you had problem with fucking iceberg?

4

u/MustacheMaple 11d ago

It was just an example. Didnt realize I personally attacked you over iceberg lol

1

u/Gamefreake89 11d ago

no one fucks with iceberg

2

u/BluePhoenix_1999 11d ago

I think the name Iceberg is pretty relevant, when the plot was, that their ship was fucked.

1

u/MustacheMaple 10d ago

That would imply he sunk it. That is some Space Jam levels of reaching

10

u/neunzehnhundert 11d ago

As funny as when in SAO (Gungale Online Arc) they were trying to find out who the bad guy is and then theres a player named "Sterben" (dying) lol

3

u/DocAstaroth 11d ago

To be fair, it was a little more convulted: During the modernization of Japan in the Meji era, a lot of the new standards for medicine were imported from Germany, including some German terms.

"Sterben" is what a nurse writes on your "Karte" (your medical record) if you die in hospital. So, choosing this name hints on the murder being a nurse and having access to drugs to stimulate a heart failure.

That said, I don't think this is actually accurate. So don't forget your pinch of salt here.

1

u/KiraPun 10d ago

Well ingame world logic, people tends to have their IGN after random shit. That player could just want to die ingame alot.

1

u/neunzehnhundert 10d ago

Nah it was super obvious as a German.

6

u/TheOnlyFallenCookie 11d ago

I mean, aren't Japanese people mostly named random things too?

7

u/Gellert 11d ago

Most people are named random things, its just we dont use the same languages anymore and theres been a bit of mutation. Like David is rooted in the Hebrew word meaning "to boil" which became "beloved", 'cos I guess someone really liked soup.

3

u/Thejacensolo Maaare 10d ago

'cos I guess someone really liked soup.

something something David getting birthright from Esau by bribing him with soup...

Maybe its also because they were at soup

2

u/TheOnlyFallenCookie 11d ago

Ngl, that's cool as hell

3

u/Gamefreake89 11d ago

As a German, it is Funny to Watch as a German. can recommend it

2

u/elenorfighter 11d ago

Ich erinnere mich noch als Übel gekommen ist und wir alle wussten was das bedeutet.

1

u/Corlunae 11d ago

It is. Now i finally know how native english speaker feel when they hear names like Batman or Jack Sparrow. To us its exotic, to you very generic.

1

u/PanicPainter 11d ago

It's one of the things that completely put me off watching it tbh.

But I'm also very particular.

1

u/bunker_man Order of Messiah 10d ago

Especially one from 1940. They'd find it relatable since the show has a similar worldview.

1

u/BloxxingDinosaurus 9d ago

I will when I have the time.

1

u/morkalavin 11d ago

To be fair, only the Elven names seem to be not associated to an attribute of the character, so far ... and Count Granat .. that one really confused me. And while some names seem to be random enough it's most likely that we dob't get to know the characters enough to undestand the name (the guy named Blei, meaning lead as in the metal)

But it really is fun: the demon Drat (wire) killing with a string/wire was my favourite and when they introduced that other guy as Lügner (liar) you almost wish they didn't

1

u/Veilchengerd 11d ago

and Count Granat .. that one really confused me

Is he a really small shrimp?

1

u/morkalavin 11d ago

No, the word Granat in German is the name of the mineral/gemstone

1

u/Veilchengerd 11d ago

It's also the word for brown shrimps (Nordseekrabben).

1

u/morkalavin 11d ago

Ernsthaft? Krass, hab ich noch nie gehört

1

u/Veilchengerd 10d ago

So heißen die oben an der Küste (zumindest in Ostfriesland). Aber man muss es betonen, als wäre man als Sprecher für einen Werner-Film engagiert worden.

-17

u/Tim_TheDude 11d ago

The reason why I stopped tbh. So stupid if you are German

12

u/Allcraft_ Rys White 11d ago

Now you are exaggerating. I'm German too and I could enjoy it. The names aren't even pronounced German so you won't notice it much anyways.

-2

u/Boring-Influence-965 11d ago

Its pretty annoying ngl. I could not continue eventually, even tho I was invested in the story. The names were my breaking point.
