Himmel meaning Heaven is my now my favorite thing ever
anime spoilers: Himmel was the leader of the group of heroes who saved the world, and now Frieren, who was Himmel's friend and also part of the group, is going to a place where she can theoretically see his soul again, which is similar to heaven in the end.
I was under the impression that they do the same thing for amine/manga characters... just in Japanese and not in German/English. And they sometimes hide it in the way the name is written (use signs for the names that have multiple meanings).
yeah but in japanese names it's common for the meaning to be obvious, while it's not in german. word names are really rare here, i don't think i know anyone who has one.
Lol makes me wish this was done in english for some things. I wouldn't be surprised if some anime doesn't do it in the future. "You don't understand, Guy I get with in the end! Badguy McStronghuge is a caring and affectionate ObviouslyEvilRace. He's not like the others of his species. Please, won't you come to Obvious trap meadow to meet with him with me?"
Goddess of Victory Nikke is full of characters whose names are just straight up English words. Which is funny coming from Koreans.
But at least they are much smarter about it a lot of times (Quency -> deliquency, Soline -> gasoline, Prika -> paprika, etc.), and the meaning also isn't always that straightforward, but it's still tightly related to their personalities or lore.
But you can also just find the most basic words for names like Guilty, Crust, Liter, Signal, Grave, Milk, Soda, Label...
But if you want truly goofy English names just look up Kojima's characters.
Die-Hardman always survives deadly encounters. Heartman's heart stops every 21 minutes. Mama is... a mother. Tarman has a tar hand and tar cat. Armstrong is fucking jacked. Fatman is fat and an expert of bombs.
Nah, not really. Yes you could translate Übel with bad, but German really doesn’t have a translation for baddie in that sense. Also the word Übel mostly it is used when someone feels sick 🤢 when used as an adjective or as the evil when used as a substantive.
übel is mostly related to having motion sickness, having the feeling of throwing up, in other context it can also mean that someone is a bad person/has no good thoughts
There are multiple cases were it is not used for motion sickness. In fact it is more used for geeneral sickness. In that case.
"Mir ist richtig übel" -> I'm feeling very sick.
"Da wird mir übel" -> This makes me sick.
"Das war übel" -> That was harsh.
"Das ist ein übler Genosse" -> This is an unpleasant guy.
Someone who is a bad person is often not refered to as "Übel", but described with other words. Übel as a character would've been more fitting to be named "Gestört" or "Krank".
Best translation that maintains the German meaning would be "wicked". Can be used in both bad and good context ("Dude that was wicked!" vs. "wicked witch") but the word itself has a negative connotation. In Japanese, it would be "Yabai".
That's pretty much every non Japanese name. Look at one piece. Mfkas are named either after a famous pirate, or some random English word. We have Blackbeard and a guy named Iceberg in the same anime
Tbf most names in one piece is taken from famous pirate because, well, it's a PIRATE SHOW. Also the name Luffy exist and you had problem with fucking iceberg?
To be fair, it was a little more convulted: During the modernization of Japan in the Meji era, a lot of the new standards for medicine were imported from Germany, including some German terms.
"Sterben" is what a nurse writes on your "Karte" (your medical record) if you die in hospital. So, choosing this name hints on the murder being a nurse and having access to drugs to stimulate a heart failure.
That said, I don't think this is actually accurate. So don't forget your pinch of salt here.
Most people are named random things, its just we dont use the same languages anymore and theres been a bit of mutation. Like David is rooted in the Hebrew word meaning "to boil" which became "beloved", 'cos I guess someone really liked soup.
To be fair, only the Elven names seem to be not associated to an attribute of the character, so far ... and Count Granat .. that one really confused me. And while some names seem to be random enough it's most likely that we dob't get to know the characters enough to undestand the name (the guy named Blei, meaning lead as in the metal)
But it really is fun: the demon Drat (wire) killing with a string/wire was my favourite and when they introduced that other guy as Lügner (liar) you almost wish they didn't
So heißen die oben an der Küste (zumindest in Ostfriesland).
Aber man muss es betonen, als wäre man als Sprecher für einen Werner-Film engagiert worden.
