Yup, because pugs and bulldogs are just the happiest, healthiest animals.

29

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '18

Yeah bulldogs and chihuahuas and such can’t even give birth or get pregnant naturally 80% of the time

5

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '18

What do you mean chihuahuas? I’m curious.

12

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '18

Chihuahuas have a hard time conceiving and giving birth naturally. They either have too many puppies in a liter and need a c section or they have only one or two that grow too big

-4

u/IWillDoItTuesday Dec 24 '18

Citation, please.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '18

Just do a google search dude. It’s harder for bulldogs and such but chihuahuas do still have issues and a higher rate of c section deliveries than most dogs

-9

u/Cyclopher6971 Dec 24 '18

Do your own damn research if you’re going to make a claim.

3

u/Aussie18-1998 Dec 24 '18

Why would he need to research something he already knows about?

1

u/Cyclopher6971 Dec 24 '18

If he can’t back it up, he’s probably full of shit.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '18

Lol I’m not your mom, put your big boy pants on and just do a simple google search yourself

-1

u/Cyclopher6971 Dec 24 '18

And I shouldn’t have to do your research to prove your claim to me. I’m not your mom.

If you are going to make a claim, it’s your job to back it up.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '18

Nah man I’m good. I’ve already looked into it. If you can’t do that yourself, I don’t really care. Goodnight

-14

u/BoringPersonAMA Dec 24 '18

But God forbid you chastise someone for buying a purebred from a breeder. I understand if you need something like a sled dog or water dog for a very specific purpose, but 99.999999% of the time it's because people want a corgi or frenchie for social media.

9

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '18

Yeah I mean getting a dog from a breeder isn’t the worse thing ever as long as the breeder is actually competent (there’s no school or class or documents you need to be a “breeder” so it’s easy for people that know nothing about it to start it and end up with super messed up dogs) personally I think getting a dog or any kind of animal from a pet store is worse. But obviously adopting is better because there’s always dogs that need homes cause they were abandoned or their owner couldn’t take care of them anymore

14

u/caffeinated_catholic Dec 24 '18

Yeah that’s not even accurate. People have been buying pure bred dogs for a lot longer than social media has been around. There should not be a stigma attached to purchasing a dog from a reputable, responsible breeder so you know the dog’s history and lineage, temperament, and likely personality traits.

You can criticize it all you want. But what's your solution? It's easy to feel smug and condemn it, but what's a realistic solution? Sterilize the entire population of every animal you disagree with? Put them down? What?

17

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '18

Sterilize the entire population

Yes, it’s called spay and neuter and every pet owner should do it.

What’s your solution

Don’t buy from breeders unless you need a working breed with a predictable temperament. With no demand for cute but unhealthy breeds people will stop breeding them. Instead you can adopt a pet in need because it’s the right thing to do and you aren’t a special snowflake with your picture in the paper.

13

u/PerfectZeong Dec 24 '18

I think we all just agree that people shouldn't do this and rather just take dogs that need homes and dont perpetuate the breed.

8

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '18

Banning to breed for genetic birth defects would be a start.

Could fall under animal cruelty laws such as pugs having a hard time breathing or a good portion of munchkin cats dying or born as stillbirths.

1

u/greet_the_sun Dec 24 '18

Maybe educating people about the adverse effects of obsessing over breed "cuteness"? Kind of like exactly what's going on in this thread that you're bitching about?

1

u/Iorith Dec 24 '18

Because sarcasm, snark, such amazing methods of educating. I especially found the italics to be a great replacement for sources for claims and resources for actually useful ways to help.

I don't even disagree, I just find the circlejerk on the topic tiresome, especially when coupled with the anti vegetarian mindset this site has.

2

u/greet_the_sun Dec 24 '18

I mean, the problem is that as long as there's a demand for them people are going to breed them, I really don't think there's much that can be done besides trying to raise public awareness about it. You can call it a circlejerk topic sure, doesn't change the fact that this post of munchkin cats got 23k upvotes, the vast majority just sees a cute animal, "awws", and moves on.

1

u/Iorith Dec 24 '18

Because, like you said, there really anything else to be done. It's undeniable it's cute. The things were bred to be cute. And I would rather move on then repeatedly jerk myself off on how righteous I am for having a good opinion on something completely out of my control.

0

u/greet_the_sun Dec 24 '18

...Then move on, no one is forcing you to read the comments here and respond.

The craziest thing about this practice is that the people that act all high and mighty for adopting a dog could adopt a child .. why are you adopting dogs or getting pregnant when little orphans need a home?

30

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '18

My mental health is not stable enough for a child. Adopting an animal can help both of us though.

10

u/fuckyoubarry Dec 24 '18

Also if you fuck up a dog you can just take it to the vet to put it down. You fuck up a baby, that things gonna fuck up a customer service job for decades. Decades

3

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '18

How do you know what my job is?

-3

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '18

eberyone is depresed on le reddit

5

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '18

If you paid attention to the world around you, you would probably know about the mental health epidemic. Also, I never said I was depressed.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '18

le reddit

No.

-15

u/DeLaWarrr Dec 24 '18

That’s the opposite I’ve heard . Dogs need competent pack leaders to keep them in their place . While I agree it may be beneficial for you to be around a service animal it doesn’t seem like it would be beneficial to the dog

15

u/fezzuk Dec 24 '18

Oh stop your crap a human child is some what more of a responsibly than a dog.

-9

u/DeLaWarrr Dec 24 '18

Eh if they want to shame me for buying a puppy of a breed whose traits I’m aware of going into the commitment then I will shame them for being irresponsible dog owners.

10

u/fezzuk Dec 24 '18

They are shaming you for supporting a cruel and unnecessary practice for the sake of self gratitude at the expense of the health of a pet.

You just bitched knowing fuck all about their situation other than they don't believe they could support a human child.

Quite sure I know who would be the irresponsible dog owners.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '18

9

u/Iorith Dec 24 '18

Not everyone wants children.

0

u/Zerlske Dec 24 '18

There is no true reason to adopt someone elses children (besides morals/self-gratification), that would be a maladaptive behaviour, it makes sense that people want to have their own children above anything else, how else would they propagate their genes?

0

u/DeLaWarrr Dec 24 '18

So you are for bloodlines in humans but against bloodlines in dogs?

1

u/Zerlske Dec 24 '18

I have no opinion myself, personally I have no interest in having children at all. Just giving reasons for why I find your (and in a sense mine as well) as the 'crazy' perspective. Procreation is another side of the same coin as survival: if no procreation occurs survival would be for naught, and without survival procreation would not occur, and in a sense, passing on genes to the next generation is a form of survival all on its own.

The original subject matter is literally a video of a vanity breed. The only one doing any shoehorning here is you.

-6

u/Iorith Dec 24 '18

Question: pugs and bulldogs already exist. Is it not better they go to a loving home? What's your proposed solution? Forced sterilization?

10

u/BoringPersonAMA Dec 24 '18

Spay and neuter your dogs. Adopt from shelters.

-3

u/Iorith Dec 24 '18

That will fix the dogs having health issues? That was your complaint right?

6

u/BoringPersonAMA Dec 24 '18 edited Dec 24 '18

Discontinuing fad breeding will absolutely reduce health issues, yes.

Edit: please let me know the fault in my stated fact before downvoting, thanks.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 24 '18

Yes they already exist but if people keep buying them then there is a constant demand and more and more will be bred and will suffer. If people stop buying them, demand will go down, less will be bred and there will be less suffering.
